Product Description
Denmark is regarded by many as a model European country. In a short space of time unemployment rates have more than halved, inflation has remained low and the welfare state has not only been consolidated but improved. A new policy-mix has proved to be effective, but what exactly does it entail?

This path-breaking book provides an historical, systematic analysis of Danish policy developments, taking a critical, post-positivist approach. It highlights the internal lines of conflict but also demonstrates the co-operative nature of Danish decision-makers. The author describes and explains the individual policy-style evident in several different arenas including the economy, the labor market, health, education, agriculture and modernization. The analysis shows that much can be learned and applied from the Danish policy making and implementation experiences. Providing a comprehensive overview of the Danish welfare system, the author demonstrates that although Denmark may not have realized ‘the third way’, it has in fact found its own unique way.

Henning Jorgensen not only provides an accurate account of what lies behind the consensual policy style in Denmark, but also offers an insight into areas of disharmony and the strategies for eventual resolution. This book is strongly recommended for all scholars and students of public policy and political science. ... Read more

Product Description
"Svalesen has turned up quite an amazing depth of sources on this ship! They allow him to reconstruct the tenor of the voyage in engaging, vivid detail, even to develop aspects of some of the personalities on board. . . . a dramatic narrative of the sea." --Joseph C. Miller, University of Virginia

This richly illustrated story of a typical slave ship and its last voyage from Denmark-Norway to Africa's Gold Coast to the Caribbean recreates, day-by-day, what life was like for captain, crew, and the newly enslaved. The sad and horrific triangular trade in human lives is made specific and personal through records and artifacts salvaged from the Fredensborg, the most meticulously documented slave vessel yet discovered.

Leif Svalesen, diver and author, discovered the wreck of the Fredensborg off the coast of Norway in 1974, more than 200 years after it sank. This find led Svalesen on a search for the full story of the ship and its final voyage. The Slave Ship Fredensborg is a marvelous account of history and discovery for scholars and general readers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremedous Read
I just finished reading this book as I was traveling to St. Croix. It is written by a Norwegian amateur diver who found the wreck of the Slave Ship Fredensborg. He then went on a twenty year journey to trace the history of the ship (including detailed inventory records, diaries, personnel etc.) which traveled from Copenhagen to Ghana to St Croix before the wreck in Southern Norway. The book is a fascinating read and I highly recommend it if you want to learn more about that time period, Denmark, Norway, St Croix, Slave trade etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Different Look at the Middle Passage
This book is essentially two books in one. The first two-thirds or so of it focus in depth on the ill-fated final voyage of the Fredensborg as it traveled from Denmark to Ghana to the Virgin Islands and back to Scandinavia, where it sunk off the coast of Norway. Because of the detailed logs and letters of the crew, a great deal of insight is given into the day-to-day shipboard life of the crew throughout the journey. The final third of the book traces the modern underwater archaeology involved in recovering the ship and journeys by the author to St. Croix and Ghana. Much of the second part of the book dwells on the fate of those who were enslaved and carried across the Middle Passage, something that is glossed over in the first part due to its reliance upon the crew logs, which made little mention of the ship's human cargo.

All in all, it is an interesting read because of the vast amount of detail included from the ship's logs and because very little seems to have been written in English about Dano-Norwegian involvement in colonization in the Americas and in the salve trade. Also in the book's favor are the lavish illustrations, including reproductions of the logs, period maps and sketches and contemporary photographs of the sites. ... Read more

Product Description

Going beyond previous investigations into urban land use and travel, Petter Næss presents new research from Denmark on residential location and travel to show how and why urban spatial structures affect people's travel behaviour.

In a comprehensive case study of the Copenhagen metropolitan area, Næss combines traditional quantitative travel surveys with qualitative interviews in order to identify the more detailed mechanisms through which urban structure affects travel behaviour. The case study findings are compared with those from other Nordic countries and analyzed and evaluated in the light of relevant theory and literature to provide solid, valuable conclusions for planning sustainable urban development.

With a broader range of statistics than previous studies and conclusions of international relevance, Urban Structure Matters provides well-grounded conclusions for how spatial planning of urban areas can be used to reduce car dependence and achieve a more sustainable development of cities.

Product Description
This book looks at the making and the consuming of places in the contemporary world.Illustrated through various case-studies from Denmark, it considers how places, performances and peoples intersect. It examines the fascinating circumstances through which visitors to a place, in part, produce that place through their performances. Places are intertwined with people through various systems that generate and reproduce performances in and of that place. These systems comprise networks of hosts, guests, buildings, objects and machines that contingently realize particular performances of specific places. The studies featured here develop an exciting new mobility paradigm emerging within the social sciences. ... Read more

Product Description
This book tells the story of a fertile European country that, as a result of over-population and military armament, over-exploited its fields and forests in a nonsustainable fashion. By the eighteenth century, Denmark, along with other European countries, found itself in an ecological crisis: clear felling of forests, sand drift, floods, inadequate soil fertilization and cattle disease. This book explains how the crisis was overcome, and is the first attempt to understand early modern Europe from a consistently ecological viewpoint. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorkild's Taudry Tale
Unfortunately, an 'ecohistorical' interpretation of Denmark's past will always gain a hardy following of critics.Such criticism necessarily devotes its firepower to outlining how 'radical' and 'what a break from tradition' it is.It only breaks from a tradition that accepts man's relationship with the earth as being one of master and servant.By historicising that particular statement, one would discover that humanity's relationship with the earth (our Mother) has not always been so short-sighted.

I recommend this book ...When such important historical writing has such a princely price tag it's no wonder that the world is mired in such dilemmas.Of course, scholars deserve adequate remuneration, but not at the expense of the public good.

Kjaergaard's destruction of the 'common-sense' paradigms that dominate so much scholarship is certainly worth a read - even if it does reek of 'Khmer Rouge' politics.Until the problems that he discusses are removed from the earth, his history will remain relevant.Perhaps any such removal would necessitate the cessation of 'homo historicity'.I certainly hope not!

4-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing lunatic
I think that The danish revolution is intersting for a number of reasons. First of all it is provocative in the sense that it questions the tradition af danish history. TK does not agree with the old view that the reforms oflate 18th century marked the beginning of a new progressive period ofdanish agricultural history. On the contrary he focuses on the brekdown ofthe rural community which, according to Mr. Tk. was the basis of theecological recovery the 18th century. This I think is an interesting newangle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Kjaergaard is a raving lunatic... An opinion.
The Danish Revolution, 1500-1800: An Ecohistorical Interpretation(Studies in enviroment and History) by Thorkild Kjaergaard

First of all let medeclare that I in no way question the methodology used by Mr. Kjaergaard. What I do question is his political and enviromental ideas which he usesthis book to further. These really quite entertaining ideas are a"wonderfull" mix of the ideology of Khmer Rouge and a more orless academic version of the ideas of Greenpeace. The book is a great read, should one want a laugh combined with an interesting new historicalviewpoint (ecological-history).A new form of history that really could bean interesting science. When the book was first published in Denmark itcaused quite a debate in the intelectual circlesand Mr. Kjaergaard, whohas often brought forth highly controversial views regarding a broadspectre subjects, was by most people ridiculed and many commented that Mr.Kjaergaard might have lost the key to his ivory tower and therefore totallylost his connection to "the real world". I agree in that theorybut nonetheless I found the book an interesting read and would reccomend ithighly to those who find very subjective history interesting.
