Excerpt:Public water supply and sanitation in Denmark is characterized by universal access and generally good service quality. Some salient features of the sector in the Denmark compared to other developed countries are: Source: WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program (2004) Access to improved water supply and sanitation in Denmark is universal. It is estimated that 89% of households are connected to the sewer network and 11% are served by on-site sanitation systems such as septic tanks. Total water consumption in Denmark is almost 1000 million m³ per year, which comes entirely from groundwater. This compares to an estimated resource of 1,800 million m³ groundwater per year. About one third is consumed by households, one third by agriculture and market gardens, and one third by industry and institutions. Some industries buy water from the public network, while others pump their own water. Household water use in Denmark stood at 116 liters/capita/day in 2006. Since 1989, household consumption has declined 26%. Water savings were caused by new installations (e.g. shower and toilets), water saving campaigns and a higher awareness of the environment among consumers, combined with a rise in the water price. The whole population has continuous access to an improved water supp...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=18338858 ... Read more

Excerpt: This article is part of the series:Politics and government ofDenmark 2001 2005 2007 See also The Politics of Denmark takes place in a framework of a parliamentary, representative democratic, constitutional monarchy, in which the Prime Minister is the head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government, with the prime minister acting as primus inter pares. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Danish Parliament, Folketinget. Denmark has a multi-party system and no single party has held an absolute majority in parliament since the beginning of the 20th century. Since only four post-war governments have enjoyed a majority in parliament, government bills rarely become law without negotiations and compromise with both supporting and opposition parties. Hence the Danish parliament tends to be more powerful than legislatures in other EU countries. The constitution does not grant the judiciary power of judicial review of legislation, however the courts have asserted this power with the consent of the other branches of government. Since there are no constitutional or administrative courts, the Supreme Court deals with a constitutional ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25187361 ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This innovative study reviews the remarkable economic and labor market recovery madeby four small European countries: Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands. It analyzes their success and highlights the specific factors responsible, in particular the promotion of social dialogue and the institution of critical macroeconomic and labor market policies. While assessing the progress and examining the remaining problems in these four countries, the book compares their progress with that of other European Union countries and examines how similar policies and action could help combat unemployment and make progress towards full employment.

The study presents a detailed comparative analysis of the labor markets of the four countries. It analyzes employment and unemployment developments in detail, covering gender gaps, the sectoral distribution of employment, and the shares of people which are dependent on social transfers. It shows the employment intensity of economic growth and gives readers a substantial, broad overview of the economic and labor market situation in each country. Finally, the book makes relevant policy recommendations for promoting further growth and social progress in these countries, as well as others across Europe. ... Read more

The office itself is described fully in the article Prime Minister of Denmark. The Danish Monarch is the head of state. Each head of government has been the leader of one or more cabinets (for the complete list, see Cabinet of Denmark). Denmark's current Prime Minister is Lars Løkke Rasmussen representing the Liberal party Venstre. From approximately 1699 to 1730, the highest ranking non-monarchial government official was titled the Grand Chancellor. From 1730 to the enactment of Denmark's constitutional monarchy in 1848, this office was titled Minister of State of Denmark.
