Product Description
Learn to build successful working relationships with your patients

Psychology and Dentistry: Mental Health Aspects of Patient Care is a practical guide to an often-neglected aspect of dentistry-the contributions of the behavioral sciences to dental research and practice. Dr. William A. Ayer, Professor of Behavioral Sciences at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, presents a comprehensive textbook that’s an essential study aid for students preparing for their National Dental Board Examinations and a valuable classroom resource for dental school faculty. This unique book identifies the everyday concerns of dentists, dental students, and dental hygienists, offering proven strategies for patient management and for building—and maintaining—a successful dentist-patient relationship.

Psychology and Dentistry examines the contributions of the behavioral sciences to the practice of dentistry, drawing subject matter from a wide range of disciplines that include psychology, sociology, education, anthropology, economics, epidemiology, health services, and public health. The book is a practical guide to developing the necessary skills to conduct effective patient interviews, for teaching patients to manage their dental fears and anxieties, and for dealing with patients who need counseling from mental health professionals. It also addresses special issues that have become relevant to dentists and their staffs in recent years, including child abuse and neglect, spousal violence, elder abuse, aging and changes associated with age, death and dying, and bereavement.

Psychology and Dentistry examines:

behavior therapies

behavioral interventions

management techniques for patients with acute and/or chronic pain

how to train patients to manage their oral habits

how to get patients to comply with health care recommendations

pain perception and pain expression

the therapeutic use of hypnosis

how to make psychological referrals for patients

the effect of stress on dentists and dental students

and much more!Psychology and Dentistry: Mental Health Aspects of Patient Care is an essential resource for anyone working in the dental field. The book’s practical approach and unique insights are invaluable for helping you develop healthy relationships with your patients. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good vendor to use.
The two-volume set was NOT as described.I received only Volume Two of the two-volume set. When I complained to the vendor, it took them a week to get back to me after four e-mails. The vendor told me that they sent only Volume Two because Volume One is now "out of print".Going on line, there are many vendors that sell the Two Volume Set for the same price that I paid for only Volume Two.

I am very unhappy and dissatisfied with the vendor, their unhelpful attitude, and thepoor customer service.

Sincerely,

Tom Andrews

5-0 out of 5 stars Implants in Clinical Dentistry
I found this book very well organized, well illustrated and easy to read.It was full of practical advice for the practitioner wishing to place and/or restore implants. It gave unbiased information on how to surgically place and restore single and multiple fixed cases as well as removable implant cases using four different implant sysyems (Nobel Biocare, Astra Tech, Strauman and Frialit) but their advice could easily be applied to other implant systems.
The book was full of useful tables , diagrams and color illustrations.I think it would serve as an excellent reference book for any dentist wanting to embark on or expand their scope of practice in implant dentistry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent overall dental guide for veterinarians and technicians
There are a number of dentistry books on the market, but most are geared toward the dental specialist, or to those thinking about going that route. But this book covers most of the basics for the average practitioner and dental technician who are not about to begin root canals and major reconstructions. It's well organized and has excellent descriptions on how to radiograph teeth, remove them and do basic surgery on soft tissues. There is even a brief section on fracture repair that probably should have been left out... but still well presented. The author also makes some excellent instrument recommendations. ... Product Description
This introduction to Evidence-Based Dentistry provides a much-needed orientation in the subject for students and professionals alike. It is a ground-level book for those seeking to understand evidence-based dentistry and its significance for clinical practice. The book is anchored in the dental literature: the majority of the chapters offer guidance on interpreting a full published paper; where both the subject of the paper and the study design is of relevance to the field of dentistry.

Each chapter is organised in a similar way, providing a structured approach to reading and understanding research articles or commercial product information. In this respect, Evidence-Based Dentistry is designed as an introduction to understanding published research and its implications for the dental surgery; rather than as a guide on undertaking research.

* Incorporates topical published papers in order to rpovide worked examples

* Explains the most6 common forms of research used in dentistry

* Unlocks basic statistical and epidemiological concepts, along with key terms

* Enables the reader to identify the research question, assess aspects of study design, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of papers and understand their clinical relevance

* Tables, boxes and figures are used extensively to present core information. Useful templates are also provided, which readers may use/adapt for analysis, including study clubs. ... Read more

I am a second year dental student at the University of the West Indies, School of Dentistry, Mount Hope Medical Sciences Complex, Trinidad, W.I. This book was a recommended text on our reading list. I used the book to prepare for my recent dental exams, and as it turned out I managed to top my class...I guess this is a reflection on how student oriented this book is.

I really enjoyed reading the book. It was never a bore, and the illustrations were very helpful in visualising what was being narrated in the text.

I highly recommend this book to all dental students and I also feel that those already in practice should have a view of this book to refresh their minds.

3-0 out of 5 stars A half cup
This book has valuable information. But it's underlying philosophy is disappointing. Especially in view of the recently released report of the Surgeon General on Oral Health. Oral health is something which in to alarger extent than any other domain is depending of the individualsbehaviour, or if you want, oral ill-health is to larger extent than anyother medical domain depending of the individuals ill-behaviour.

Anactive way to prevent oral disease is good maintenance of oral hygiene. Yetvery little is said about prevention, just at the end of the book. It is ifin a manual for a car you are suggested to visit regularly the repair shop, and at the end you are told, well, you should go to the service stationevery .... miles.

Also, from a consumer's guide, I would expect toinstruct the customer on what to look. From a consumers guide on how tobuy/build a house, I would expect tips on how to check the craftmansship onthe work to do/done. Thus I would expect from a "consumer's guide todentistry" some information on how to check the dentist's work. I amnot a dentist thus I cannot give advice here. But I am sensible to hygienicissues, general hygiene, not dental hygiene, and I would expect 20 yearsafter the outbreak of AIDS, but not only, some clues on how a real modernclinic should be equipped today.

In his report the Surgeon Generalwrites: "There is a lack of ethnic diversity in oral healthworkforce." In Dental Hygiene there is also a lack of genderdiversity, the overhelming majority of dental hygienists being women. That's maybe the reason why dental hygiene, an important part of oralwellbeing, has such a low rating. ...
