Product Description
Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are devices that provide a fast, low-cost way for embedded system designers to customize products and deliver new versions with upgraded features, because they can handle very complicated functions, and be reconfigured an infinite number of times. In addition to introducing the various architectural features available in the latest generation of FPGAs, The Design Warrior's Guide to FPGAs also covers different design tools and flows.

This book covers information ranging from schematic-driven entry, through traditional HDL/RTL-based simulation and logic synthesis, all the way up to the current state-of-the-art in pure C/C++ design capture and synthesis technology. Also discussed are specialist areas such as mixed hardward/software and DSP-based design flows, along with innovative new devices such as field programmable node arrays (FPNAs).

Clive "Max" Maxfield is a bestselling author and engineer with a large following in the electronic design automation (EDA)and embedded systems industry. In this comprehensive book, he covers all the issues of interest to designers working with, or contemplating a move to, FPGAs in their product designs. While other books cover fragments of FPGA technology or applications this is the first to focus exclusively and comprehensively on FPGA use for embedded systems.

* First book to focus exclusively and comprehensively on FPGA use in embedded designs

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to FPGA
It is a excellent book for FPGA introduction, though it is not a cookbook. I'd like the Chapter 8-18, containing the FPGA wiki.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not too bad, but only for specific audiences
I read through this book on a whim a while ago when I started getting into reconfigurable computing, and since then have gone up the 'food chain' so to speak. This book isn't that bad, in fact for total neophytes to FPGAs and EDA in general, it's a fairly lightweight but pretty comprehensive introduction.

It includes a fairly basic overview of the FPGA architectures, HDLs, C/C++/SystemC design flows, a brief description of simulation and verification, and other random tidbits here and there. Almost no math required, just a high level introduction and overview.

That said, it probably is best targeted towards business / marketing types who don't want to be total idiots to their engineering staffs. Also undergraduates or new engineers who want a light introduction to the FPGA industry and design process might benefit.

Anyone obviously who is already a design engineer or whatever won't find much use here. Then again I would question why someone with lots of experience would read a book titled "Design Warrior's Guide." Shouldn't you guys be reading the latest papers from DAC or ICCAD?

For a more technical overview of EDA in general, a good series is the EDA for IC Design series. But it's probably too technical for the audience this book is targeting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly fluff
This book contains little if any practical information with respect to real world FPGA design.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT much of use
I bought this book because I needed it for my class. But this book was not that useful as it covers justs the general aspects of the FPGA which you can easily find on the internet. Most of the chapter was not at all worthy to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction and History of FPGAs
This is a terrific book!

I received this book at a seminar on logic synthesis for FPGAs. I found the book absolutely delightful to read, enjoyed the timelines in the margins, and the excellent readability of the text. Also, I implemented a couple of the book's suggestions in my current FPGA device. The debug signal mux for example.I had been recompiling the design each time I needed to examine a different section of the logic. However, by implementing a four-port debug mux, I was able to test various sections of the device without running the recompile sequence each time. This is something I really should have thought of myself, so I appreciate the book's describing this approach as it is saving me a lot of time, wasted effort, and frustration.

Product Description
B> This book presents introductory programming and software development concepts to engineers using a disciplined approach. It provides numerous case studies and programming projects based on real-world examples from a wide range of engineering areas, making the material relevant to what engineers will encounter in their careers; the authors introduce implementations of basic numerical and statistical methods commonly used by engineers. Another feature is the addition of a chapter entitled "On to C++" that prepares readers for a transition to object-oriented programming. The book focuses on many aspects of software engineering, establishing early the connection between good problem-solving skills and effective software development. A five-phase software development method is presented in Chapter 1 and applied in every subsequent case study throughout. The book presents material in an order that meets the needs of a beginning programmer, rather than by the structure of the C programming language. This approach makes it possible to present fundamental concepts using traditional high-level terminology--output parameter, array, array subscript, string--and makes it easier for readers without a prior assembly-language background to master the many facets of pointer usage. This book is designed to introduce C programming to engineers in a way that is relevant to their engineering practice. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not even helpful
As a sophomore in electrical and computer engineering major at Auburn University, I can safely say that this is the worst book I have ever *attempted* to read as well as spent seventy dollars on. The book came with faded text, a poor introduction, and horrible examples that does not appeal to the beginning programmer. This book is now a coffee coaster in the living room of my apartment (as no one would buy it back). Do not waste your time with this book. Instead, try the Absolute Beginner's guide to C by Greg Perry or any other book if you want to learn C.
Not this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who printed this thing?!?
Although this book does cover the material okay, I was extremely disappointed in the printing and binding quality. For starters almost everything is blurry, except straight text. The programming examples are blurry and the whole book looks like it was scanned in. Even the front and back cover is blurry. The binding quality is terrible. My book fell apart after almost no use(like literally a couple hundred pages came out of the middle of the book in a block). Opening the book requires bending it slightly to keep it open, but as you do, you can see the binding material come apart with. I was careful with this book and rarely used it, but my dollars basically are down the drain in this book.

The content is okay, but there are better books that won't fall apart on you and can easily be read because they haven't been scanned from what looks like newspaper print.

If you have to buy this book for a class, you probably don't actually need it for that class. If you are a serious programmer and want to build your professional library, don't buy this book; get a better one. Reference someone else's book who bought it if you have to.

1-0 out of 5 stars C Program Design for Engineers
Book trys to be good at explaining programming, but it's not exactly something you can explain in a book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done book
I will have to disagree with theguy that said the book " NOT THE BEST ".
First he said that he was a C++ programmer and that the book was not good for him. Well, i'am not sure if that guy is blind or half stupid ,but the title of the book clearly says " C PROGRAM FOR ENGINEERS " not for morons.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best
I am a c++ programmer and tried to brush up on C using this book. I had to buy a new book. Maybe an engineer can get some use for their $55 some bucks but I didn't. ... Read more

Product Description
Pro/ENGINEER Solutions and Plastic Design guides readers through practical examples of plastic components modeling, teaching robust modeling techniques and providing "inside" tips to delivering a manufacturable design. Using a series of exercises and tutorials, readers will learn to identify and model part surfaces for injection molding, split design assemblies into components, and use analytical tools to evaluate the quality of the finished design project. Because Pro/ENGINEER CAD models designed for manufacture in plastic are less intuitive to work with, the overall philosophy of how to approach such a part design as presented in this book differs sharply from the basic building block construction techniques in other Pro/ENGINEER tutorials. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Just not much here
I am in between a novice/intermediate user level in Pro E 20. I have a small background in plastics injection molding but mostly silicone molding. This book spends most of the time explaining basic injection molding design (things like draft, runners, core/cavity). But very the discussionof these features is very basic and mostely antedotal. You could learnjust about everything covered in this book in about 1 hour talking with amold designer and probably alot more with the mold designer. If you havebeen commissioned to start designing molds then you will need a hell ofalot more then this book offers you.The final section of the book haswork excercises designing parts. But it just tells you to design someparts on Pro E, NOT how to use Pro E to design the parts. I have doneseveral tutorials that cover general features of Pro E but was looking forsomething that gave some new features in Pro E and HOW tos on thosefeatures. Not in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for those new to the design of molded plastic parts.
Excellent book for people new to the design of injection molded parts. A good introductory text with an overviewof some common processes used to manufacture molded plastic components. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer
The preface to this book says it is suitable for a college student or an engineer trying to get up to speed with real time systems. An excellent overview.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too cursory except as a text book
The preface to this book says it is suitable for a college student or an engineer trying to get up to speed with real time systems. The latter is nonsense. It may work for a college course where a skilled instructor is adding material but it is far too cursory to apply. The first 6 chapters are basic material for any curriculum on programming. The chapters that follow mention difficulties but give no techniques that can be applied. Nothing in this would enable a person, previous unprepared to do so, to write a real time system.

This book says it eschews mathematical formalism for practical utility. What it lacks is both a formal foundation and practical utility. The exercises (completely without sample answers) are terribly thought out. The description of difficulties of real time job scheduling are a list of known problems and some references to other papers. Sample code included is too specific to be general, and too general to be directly applicable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless book-- don't buy it
I am VERY VERY disappointed that IEEE publishes this book. IEEE usually has very high standard in publishing books under its name. However, it does not happen in this book. I have no clue why IEEE decides to publish this book. This book has a collection of VERY superficial knowledge that you can find from all entry level undergraduate books. It does not help engineers AT ALL as the book title claims. It misses LOTS of important real-time theories. Some theories mentioned in the book are either too superficial or even incorrect. As another reviewer states, the most important and widely used real-time scheduling theory, the rate-monotonic, is mentioned in the book by ONE single sentence. Can you believe this book is a real-time system book? Again, I am very disappointed this book get published. All my classmates believed this book is terribly BAD and we told our instructor. Don't spend your money on this expensive and useless book. If you want to know the practical aspect of real-time systems, check Mr. Simon's book "An Embedded Software Primer". All my classmates love this book. If you want to know the theory aspect of real-time systems, check Dr. Jane Liu's "Real-Time Systems" book published in 2000.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, not certain it is worth the price
I think that this is an excellent introductory book that covers a broadrange of items related to Real Time Systems.Unfortunately, I am not surethat it warrants the steep price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Expensive and Cursory but Readable
There's not enough material to warrant the price. The book is easy to read, but the author repeats himself far too much.As justus@acm.org notes, the book is full of of filler sentences, paragraphs, andchapters.

The title of the book seems incorrect, since the real-timeportion of the book is skimpy. Rate-monotonic analysis, synonomous withreal-time in academia, is only given a sentence. Ada, "the"real-time programming language, is barely mentioned. While Ada's pros andcons can be debated, it is almost completely skipped. On the other hand, software engineering practices, design methodologies, and testing havetheir own chapters.

I didn't hate the book, but felt cheated afterpaying [the money]. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best technical book I have ever read.
This book is very well organized. I found it extremely informative. Starts with the history of PC board processes and modern techniques, design and limitation. It guides you through several examples of PC board design andschematic design also.It shows you how to use AutoCad to generate Gerberand Excellon files for PC board House production.

The floppy includedwith the book contains example files that are used in the book. The floppyalso contains utilities and librarys of symbols and parts.

This is agreat book. It leaves nothing out. You will find everything here.

Ireally did not know much about how to use AutoCad, but by reading andworking the examples, I learned how professionals use AutoCad.

Manytechnical books leave out key points and jump from subject to subject. Someeven change terminology slightly and leave you wondering. Not this one. This book is a precise work.

Its clear, that the author is an expert inthis field. WHAT A GREAT, LEARNING EXPERIENCE. ... Read more

Product Description
Documents, such as drawings, memos and specifications, form an essential function in the design and construction industry. Throughout the lifecycle of a built asset, starting from an initial design idea, right through to a final built form and its ongoing management, thousands, even millions of documents can be used to convey various forms of information to a range of interested parties. In many ways, therefore, the success of a design, or construction-based company, relies upon an understanding of the use of documents, as well as the technologies and techniques that are used to create them.

The Digital Document provides an extensive background to the issues and technologies surrounding this very important topic. It examines a technical subject in an insightful manner that is neither intimidating nor confusing, even to the novice computer user. By introducing the subject through a series of preliminary reviews of current practices and essential computing technologies, the reader is able to better appreciate the benefits and capabilities of a wide range of digital document types. This book explores the role of documents in a professional practice, examines the components, capabilities, viability, and use of digital documents in the design and construction industry, and identifies and explains many of the
standards in use today.

In order to facilitate a better understanding of digital document technologies, a number of essential reviews are provided including:
- the definition and purpose of a document
- how documents are typically used by design professionals
- the nature of the digital document environment
- the data types which make up digital documents

The Digital Document is an essential reference for the architect, engineer or design professional that wants to find out more about effective communication in the digital workplace.

2-0 out of 5 stars Uhh...where is the information????
I was actually hoping to find a useful book that would help me implement PDM software, or at least provide guidelines and recommendations. After reading this book, I feel like I could have written it (even though I know next to nothing about the subject).
It is so general, the subject is painted with very broad soft strokes. What about costs, implementation schedules, performance, real-world implementations, difficult release paths, conflicting requirements???
Do *not* spend the money on this book.Seriously, you will be dissapointed. It is hardly worth a fraction of the cost (pick it up used, if you must).

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only a 'MUST READ' but a 'MUST HAVE'.
'The Digital Document' was first loaned to me by a friend, but as soon as I began reading it I had to own it.It is an invaluable reference tool not only for people engaged in the construction and design industries, but any document-intensive work environment, IT professionals and document authors included. I find myself constantly going back to this book for ammunition in the ongoing effort to streamline workplace processes and convert others to a more efficient way of doing business.

And not only that; 'The Digital Document' helped me to firstform a comprehensive understanding of the most intrinsic new issues underlying the electronic revolution in the modern workplace. Equipped with this new understanding and the wealth of information provided by this book I cannot help but feel as if I have gained a unique advantage when I see it's premises validated on a day-to-day basis. Product Description
The purpose of this manual is to present basic principles used in the design and construction of earth levees. The term levee as used herein is defined as an embankment whose primary purpose is to furnish flood protection from seasonal high water and which is therefore subject to water loading for periods of only a few days or weeks a year. Embankments that are subject to water loading for prolonged periods (longer than normal flood protection requirements) or permanently should be designed in accordance with earth dam criteria rather than the levee criteria given herein.

Even though levees are similar to small earth dams they differ from earth dams in the following important respects: (a) a levee embankment may become saturated for only a short period of time beyond the limit of capillary saturation, (b) levee alignment is dictated primarily by flood protection requirements, which often results in construction on poor foundations, and (c) borrow is generally obtained from shallow pits or from channels excavated adjacent to the levee, which produce fill material that is often heterogeneous and far from ideal.Selection of the levee section is often based on the properties of the poorest material that must be used. ... Product Description
Art of Designing Embedded Systems is apart primer and part reference, aimed at practicing embedded engineers, whether working on the code or the hardware design. Embedded systems suffer from a chaotic, ad hoc development process. This books lays out a very simple seven-step plan to get firmware development under control. There are no formal methodologies to master; the ideas are immediately useful. Most designers are unaware that code complexity grows faster than code size. This book shows a number of ways to linearize the complexity/size curve and get products out faster. Ganssle shows ways to get better code and hardware designs by integrating hardware and software design. He also covers troubleshooting, real time and performance issues, relations with bosses and coworkers, and tips for building an environment for creative work.

Get better systems out faster, using the practical ideas discussed in Art of Designing Embedded Systems. Whether you're working with hardware or software, this book offers a unique philosophy of development guaranteed to keep you interested and learning.

* Practical advice from a well-respected author
* Common-sense approach to better, faster design
* Integrated hardware/software ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic For the Embedded Developer
In a perfect world managers grant unlimited budgets to designers, upgrade development tools as soon as a new tool is released, managers accept the answer "It will be done when it's done", and every prototype works the first time. In Jack's world (the real world) the embedded systems designer must deal with facts, experience, and limited resources to get a product to market. That's what this book is about. The book does not arm you with sure-fire advice to persuade your boss to purchase those new development tools, nor does it contain "how-to" advice, code snippets, or schematics. The book does contain a collection of solid advice that Jack has accumulated during his career as tool-vendor, developer, consultant, and other positions associated with embedded systems design and development. There are "musings" from a collection of areas including rational for developing time estimates for firmware schedules, troubleshooting, code organization, and advice on how to improve your approach to development. I was particularly impressed with how Jack's approach to scheduling based on many studies to justify his advice. In fact, much of first part of the book applies equally to system software development. How many times have you been asked for a schedule estimate knowing fully that your boss has already determined the number waiting for you to commit to that number or have to pull a number out of a hat to satisfy the boss? Jack discusses solid advice on how to arrive data-driven estimates.

I felt the book deserved 4 stars primarily because the book is a little out of date, but is otherwise fun to reads, interesting, and introspective.

The chapter titles are:

1. Introduction
2. Diciplined Development
3. Real Time Means Right Now
4. Firmware Musings
5. Hardware Musings
6. Troubleshooting Tools
7. Trougleshooting
8. People Musings

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Suited For Those On Big Teams
Like Ganssle's other books, this one is best suited to those working on big teams and/or for big companies. That's clearly his background and much of his writing and suggested methods reflect big company bureaucracy. His writing is also generally geared towards larger 16 and 32 bit embedded projects with external memory versus smaller self contained MCUs.Most examples are x86 or 68k based.

Ganssle's style is humorous at times, and generally easy to read.Sometimes he exaggerates, however. For example, he makes interrupt routines sound like the hardest thing on earth. This book is far from being comprehensive but contains some solid advice--especially for those managing large high-budget projects.

This may NOT be the best book f you're a student, a one-man-show, work on a small team, or are using a small single chip MCU (ditto for Gannsle's other books).

1-0 out of 5 stars Stumbling on prophecies
How about that! I spent money in the amount of two scholarships to buy this book and all i got is a tutorial on how to please your boss and the customers! As i am still a student looking forenlightment on this subject i thought Jack Ganssle's book could take me there. No doubt it has valuable information, but that is spreaded across almost 250 pages like marbles on ice(could be resumed in a few pages of tips and tricks). If i wanted "filosofia" i would have read Nietzsche, if i wanted literature i would have read Miller. But i was looking for embedded systems design and i got almost nothing! Obsessing about the fact that "every idiot can write code" is not much of an "art". Very poor on examples, too much of "this thing should be done this way or else ...", lots of statistics and no fun!
He might be a good engineer but he is a poor teacher!

Don't buy this book unless you have Liberia's defficit in your account!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good.. but not for beginners
This is a very good book... but it is meant for people with experience in the industry.... the book is about industry and the dynamics within it...

not for "student" who are just in college/univ.

excelent book once you've had at least 6 months industry experience

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartily recommend to folks starting in embedded systems
This is a great book for folks who are starting out in embedded systems - a solid overview with practical advice that can be applied throughout one's career. Jack Ganssle also writes for Embedded Systems Programming mag, providing a lot of useful info in an entertaining and lively manner. Good technical writing is tough to come across - he does a wonderful job. ... Read more
