Product Description
Environmentally safe engineering is one of the hottest and most controversial topics in technical circles. Though many publications offer theory and intellectual discussion of the topic, this book provides practical, hands-on advice including hints and tips from the nation's top engineers. Green Electronics/Green Bottom Line offers practical advice for engineers and managers who want or need to incorporate environmental issues into the design process. The emerging discipline of Design for the Environment (DfE) combines engineering know-how with environmental awareness. Topics include international policy issues such as ISO 14000, materials selection (e.g., for recyclability), manufacturing concerns like no-flux processes, and design issues such as power consumption. Real-world cases show how these elements can be included in everyday designs.

Each chapter opens with a topical cartoon and lively story, interview or editorial. The discussion will then move to specific engineering issues and their economic and social context. The last section explores larger possibilities and new directions still to be explored by engineers concerned with education, health, and environmental quality. Contributors include engineers from Motorola, Analog Devices, Dupont, Compaq, Nortel, AMD, and Apple Computer, and academics from universities in the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe, as well as the Rocky Mountain Institute.

Product Description
Earthquake Resistant Design For Engineers and Architects Second Edition David J. Dowrick This is the second edition of a book which has proved useful to large numbers of engineers and architects since it was first published. The author’s aim is to present the subject of earthquake resistant design from the standpoint of a designer wishing to gain an overall view of the entire process, from the nature of loading through to the details of construction. The procedures used in practice are explained in relation to their theoretical basis, and extensive references are given so that readers can follow this up further if they wish. This second edition reflects the progress made since the original publication of the book in 1977. There has been substantial revision and enlargement, particularly in the treatment of seismotechnics, hazard analysis, design earthquakes, design philosophy, base isolation and geotechnical engineering. Like the first edition, this volume is international in outlook, with examples taken from throughout the world. The book is distinguished by the unified approach the author has brought to a large and often disparate field, and this makes it invaluable to all engineers, architects, and seismologists working in earthquake resistant design, whether they be practitioners, researchers or students. Product Description
Simplified Design of V/F Converters shows how to design and experiment with V/F converters, both voltage-to-frequency and frequency-to-voltage. The design approach here is the same one used in all of John Lenk's best-selling books on simplified and practical design. Throughout the book, design problems start with guidelines for selecting all components on a trial-value basis, assuming a specific design goal and set of conditions. Then, using the guideline values in experimental circuits, the desired results are produced by varying the experimental component values, if needed.

If you are a working engineer responsible for designing VFCs, or selecting IC converters, the variety of circuit configurations described here should simplify your task. Not only does the book describe converter-circuit designs, but it also covers the most popular forms of VFC ICs available. Throughout the book, you will find a wealth of information on VFC ICs and related components, including how to test and troubleshoot completed circuits.

For all skill levels.

Customer Reviews (2)

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
This book provides almost no information about designing VFCs despite its title. Rather it is a collection of manufacturers data sheets and application notes about how to use a limited range of prepackaged VFC/FVC chips.

Even Chapter 6 which was billed as describing "a number of discrete-component VFC and FVC circuit approaches"is only a rehash of circuits from the National Semiconductor linear handbook based round their IC implementations.

I could not recommend this book to anybody. If you have had little or no exposure to use VFC/FVCs circuits then Iwould recommend reading the Analog Devices etc. data sheets and design guides rather than wasting money on this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory V/F converter book
This is a good book for getting your feet wet with V/F converters.Lenk has done a good job of compiling application notes and manufacturer's tricks and techniques on V/F converter circuits into a small, easy-to-read book.

After you become acquainted with basic V/F circuits using this book, you may find yourself scouring manufacturer's websites yourself, for more in-depth information. But this book is a great start.Lenk gives the reader plenty of building-block circuits to work and learn with. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Legally damaging, wrong information
Somebody needs to hold this author accountable for disseminating wrong information. This book should be pulled from the market and buyers compensated.
If you were to take legal action against the author, I think you would have little trouble winning , for all the errors he's got in there.

Some nerve, he knows nothing.
I encourage all to return their copy, like I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLIFIED DESIGN OF SWITCHING POWER SUPPLIES
This book claims on the back cover that: "This unique book describes the operation of each circuit in detail, requiring no previous design experience to use the techniques."

I was surprised at the technical errors contained in this book. If you do have previous design experience you will be surprised to see the very obvious errors in equations and schematic diagrams.

The best sections of this book are the application note snippets from several manufacturers. I would suggest that the reader would be better served and educated by reading the manufacturers application notes and data sheets that are far better in terms of correctness and more up to date on current technology and will give you the full in-context application notes found in this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars LAME!
I bought this book to learn about switching power supplies. The types are not dicussed. The formulas given to calculate inductor values generate results that contradict each other and don't make sense. Reads like a poorly written application note.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books on the market for this subject
Our company almost did not get this book because of the review posted here. Seems the review was for something completely different than what the book states as its intent.
The twenty dollars we did spend on it has come back in a considerable savings in our transition from ACAD to a 3D CAD system. Almost every situation and pitfall described in the book(we also invested some new problems) played itself out during out transition(which is not yet complete). From legacy designs to legacy employees we went through every problem and situation.
Not to say that using the book as a guide will remove or eliminate all road blocks, but we at least new what was coming and had a variety of ways to confront the problems with workable solutions before and during the transition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly light on real content
I've been doing engineering design for a long time, mostly electrical, but some mechanical stuff here and there. I've done plenty of 2D mechanical drawings. What I was looking for was a book that explained the core differences between AutoCAD-like 2D drafting and the new wave of 3D parametric modeling tools. I wanted an overview of when to use 3D, and when 2D would be quicker. I was hoping for some guidance as to how to approach the modeling of a large assembly in 3D. Some tips for real-world designs, like the thought process to be used when modeling sheet metal assemblies. Do you leave every screw, nut and bolt used to cut holes in the drawing for use on the BOM, or leave them out because they clutter 2D views? Stuff like that. Instead, what this book delivers is breathless prose extolling the superiority of 3D CAD over 2D CAD over and over again. To be fair, the first 5 chapters do a decent job of covering some of the advantages of 3D CAD and the associated workflow, using the usual cylinders and rectangular solids. However, the text is constantly proclaiming"See how easy this is compared to 2D CAD?" Well, no, not really. How do I add 2 degrees of mold relief on that cylinder parametrically? And this leads into what I really hate about this book: the author's answer to that question is: "take college courses, get workplace training, etc. etc" and he spends the last 80 pages explaining the advantages of doing that. Well, sir, I was hoping this BOOK I purchased might contain a little more depth. No such luck.

If you're an IT person or management type who wants to know why your engineers are requesting or need a 3D CAD system, this book is great for bringing a non-technical type up to speed. If you're an engineer trying to figure out how to be productive on a 3D CAD system, well, I guess you'd better take one of the author's college courses, or wait until someone publishes a truly useful book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor effort
This is one of the all time worst electronic engineering books I have ever encountered.A few minutes searching the Maxim web site will find most of the material.90% of the examples are simply reprints from Maxim data sheets, or Maxim app. notes and engineering handbooks. Most of the material is out of date, even allowing for the book being 10 years old. It does not cover modern battery technologies (such as LiIon, or LiPoly), and does not really cover any of the "stuff" other than the switching supply itself.Notable by not being there would be any material on micropower processors, logic, interfacing across logic families, latchup, linear peripherals, low power switching, protection, design techniques, measurements, and a host of others.

A better title might have been "Some out of date Maxim medium power Switcher Datasheets briefly explained".
