1-0 out of 5 stars dont buy this book
I bought it because i thought all the recipes would be 4 ingredients or less.there are way too many recipes with way more than 4 ingredients.if i had seen that, i would not have bought it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy cooking
I thought this book would work for a friend who is trying to learn to eat better but the ingredient list on much of the recipes isn't something he would use or has.Just good food recipes would have been better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Four Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook
I never write reviews, but, since I decided to return it, but found shipping would have been almost as much as the book itself, I'm stuck with an item that is usless to me. I was very displeased with this book. It called for eating sugar and starches not healthy for diabetics. Makes no common sense!

4-0 out of 5 stars The 4-Ingredient Diabetes Cookbook.

The recepies are easy to make and are tastey. However, many of the recepies require more than 4 ingredience. This may cause frustration for those that do not keep those "extras" on hand in the kitchen. But overall, I would reccommend this cookbook to family and friends.Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cure of Dibetes - Unheard Of
What can anyone say? There is a cure. My son was diagnosed a little over a year ago and we have maintained his blood sugar in just a few days. I was one to worry about getting insulin for my son if there was an emergency. Now I know there are alternative solutions. Break away from the control freak pharmaceutical & food industries and go with what's euphoric. Read this...... You will feel a natural buzz if you incorporate it yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Referred to this book by a cousin
I have a good friend who is having some serious health issues, diabetes among them / A cousin of mine who is into natural cures recommended this book highly / She told methat after following the advice in this book for 2 weeks, two of her friends were able to stop taking some of their medications & never felt better / I hope my friend takes it seriously & gives it an honest try / This was an excellent buy for a used hardcover - less than half the paperback cost at Borders Books - (including shipping) / Thanks !

5-0 out of 5 stars Diaebetic and Ph balance diet for health
this book purchase was a hunch but several friends have looked into it and all have been impressed.I would buy it again. Best wishes

3-0 out of 5 stars Ph Miracle in Practice
I bought this book for my daughter sake. She is almost 10 yrs old, and was diagnosed with type I Diabetes 1.5 ago. I looked into alternative medicine and found Dr. Young book.
I read it,and read it again and again!I was trying to envision how I will be able to make it happened...

We are family with 5 children, and it does mean that I would have to cook something else for the rest of the family till we get comfortable with this diet.

First thing I tried was AvoRado Kid Super GreenShake.I couldn't drink it!I realized that my daughter not going to like it either.I offered it for my husband to try.It took him 30 min. to drink ½ cup of it,while making faces and grunting. After that he ran to refrigerator for a cup of fruit juice .

This week me and my husband decided that we surely will start the diet, and week later introduce our daughter to it.

First day, after drinking green drink in the morning, I had Creamy or Crunchy Broccoli Soup.It is basically a bunch of different vegetables cooked in water or broth with very little seasoning to it.It wasn't too bad.But after bowl of it, I couldn't imagine having another one.Even week later...
Well, we couldn't continue past two days of trying...

I got impression that Shelley Young doesn't spends much time creating this recipes.Idea is that if you put together something alkaline, it is goodfor you. Taste of it doesn't matter. I may research Mediterraneancuisine for soups recipes, or just any other vegetable soup recipes...

Some of the ingredients you will have to order on-line.They are hard to find even at health food stores.

Finding and buying all the supplements is another problem.Dr. Young sells all recommended supplements on his web site, but it is very expensive, although different ones are combined, so it is minimizes quantity of pills you will be taken. If you buy everything he recommends, you'll spend over $500 dollars per person.

But I am still not giving up!I do have some of the supplements, I did buy green powder at local health food store ("Green Vibrance"), and we did buy Ph drops.

I am determined to try most of the recipes in this book, since I already invested so much time in this, and money. I cannot just give up. I need to continue for my daughter sake.

Just came to find a good book of alkaline recipes. Oh, my!Shelly Young bookBack to the House of Health: Rejuvenating Recipes to Alkalize and Energize for Life new $99.00, used $40.00!

Are they after money, or what??

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy to read book
This book is my new bible and has given me the answers I was looking for.I denied or ignored my diabetes to an extent over the years and now that I know I need to take it far more seriously, this book is excellent.I have read many, many books, not knowing what to do.Should I be a vegan to lower my blood sugar even though I'm starving all the time?Should I eat meat? What and how should I eat? What can I do?What am I dong right and what am I doing wrong? This book will answer all of your questions in a simple and easy to understand way.I am now eating low carb and it has helped my blood sugar a lot.Although my sugars aren't perfect, or even in the normal range yet, I feel like I now know which path to take with this frustrating disease and what questions to ask my doctor in order to get better help.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blood Sugar 101
This book is very well written and is easy to understand. It is the best book I have read so far for type 2 diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for diabetics and low carb lovers
Very informative book.Author tells it like it is.Great reading.Only complaint is that I have not seen any books warn diabetics about the phoney no carb and one carb Breads being sold that are raising peoples blood sugars to pluto.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under 140, accept eating wierd.
This is just what I needed---with an A1c of 9.1 and heading north (getting 200's fasting)on orals and getting worse. I already dropped to 8.0.Book also contains Important truths regarding various oral meds, some negatives that I needed to know.I was NOT getting good info before--I know at least 2 peoplewith different doctors that have been told by their docs they're fine as long as they keep their glucose under 200!This book helped me to surrender to the idea that I would eat weird in order to achieve these goals......and that I would accept paying extra for strips to learn how.

Very good book, and thx for writing it.(Never thought I'd take medical advice from a bus. exc., and a seismoligist :) (sp))

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has become indispensible to me
I/ve used this book for about six years on a constant basis. In fact my first copy became so ragged I purchased another. The recipes are delicious and most have become a staple in our home.I've had many other books about dibetes 2, but found this book was the one I refer to the most - not only for the wonderful recipes but Ms Hiser explains the subject so well and thoroughly. I'm living a heathier life and this book has been my main guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars How about something written in this decade
I had intended to purchase book, until I read a couple of pages in the preview. The author states on page 1 and continues on page 2, "predict by the the year 2000 etc, etc." That was 10 years ago. I want something more current for my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Diabetes;Living and Eating with Type 2 Diabetes
We found this book to be extremely helpful.Full of great recipes and valuable information. This copy was bought for a friend who was just told he had type 2.Would highly recommended this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Diabetes:Living and Eating Well with Type 2 Diabetes

My father has type II diabetes.I bought this book for him, but ended up reading it myself.I am not diabetic, but am at risk of developing it.This book is an interesting read, and has a wondeful meal plan and recipes.I have decided to start eating the way she describes, The Mediterranean way, just because it's a healthy way to live. It's just a bonus for me that it also helps prevent and control "the other diabetes".Get this book....it's fantastic! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome guide for weight loss and lifestyle change
My daughter and I both have all of the classic symptoms of insulin resistance. Her doctor suggested weight loss, and I decided this could be something we could do together. This book is an excellent guide to understanding and implementing a life style change in eating with simple, easy to follow directions.Anyone facing a health crisis due to weight issues due to belly fat should read this book. I have been a carbo-alholic for many years, and suffer with hypoglycemic issues.I have suffered with depression, exhaustion, and light-headedness where I had to lie down just to get over it.I feel so much better, I have more energy, I can get through a day without dizzy spells and constant carb cravings.....and my cloths are getting looser, and I feel so much better about myself without feeling like I am depriving myself of food...because you eat a lot of times during the course of the day. This is the easiest food plan I have ever followed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I can eat and loose weight!!!
After trying every diet book outhere, I finally came accross "The Insulin Resistance Diet" recommended by my friend. At first I was kind of skeptical, but gave it a shot anyways. I can happily comment that it actually works !!!! It teaches you to eat healthy, and how the body reacts to certain types of foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars common sense in a book!
This book is worth it weight in gold.During the first week of Link and Balance I lost 4 lbs without starving, craving or feeling deprived.I have recommended this book to over a dozen people!Stop wondering what you can do to feel better, lose weight & get your insulin resistence under control. Spend the $12 and find out in 2 chapters!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life... Literally!
I've been following the eating plan outlined in this book for 2 months now- and I'm down 18 pounds!I lost SIX pounds in the first week, and I've lost roughly 2 pounds each week since then.I still have about 20 pounds to go until I'm at my goal weight- but I haven't been this close in YEARS.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16, and started struggling with my weight around the same time.I was never obese, but I was always overweight, even though I was active.Over the years, I've tried EVERYTHING.For 4 months earlier this year, I did a vegan diet, and stuck to a 1,600 calorie diet.I did "Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga" 6 days a week, and I walked 3 days a week.In those 4 months, I GAINED ten pounds.I was working my BUTT off- but my butt was getting bigger. ;)

I did this "diet"- the Insulin Resistance diet- and I've NEVER felt better.I have energy to spare!I have the motivation to walk- and I walk 6-10 hours a week.People who I know can't believe how different I look- they tell me all the time. But the most important difference to me is the way I FEEL.If I "fall off the wagon", I get cramps and bloating- it's not worth it to eat junk anymore.I don't have cravings for junk anymore- the cravings I used to have to FIGHT.They're gone!

This book literally changed my life, and I am SOOOO grateful "Dr. Google" found it for me!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazed by how good and simple this is
I was reluctant to give it a try since i tried so many times to lose weight on normal diets and they didn't work, of course now I know why ! Low carb also is a no-no for me, since I am hypoglycemic thanks to insulin resistance :-) Anyway, I lost a bit of weight, but then I discovered that all the yogurt I was eating to balance the carbs was making my body mad, with pimples and all ! That's how I discovered I am lactose intolerant. I replaced the milk based protein with pure egg protein, i bought it on ebay but I am sure it can be found in normal countries, not like mine :-p That's my advice to lactose intolerant people who want to be on this diet. The egg white protein is tasteless, when drank alone it tastes like water with a bit of salt, with food it's neutral and tasteless. Give it a try ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Meal Planning Made Easy, 3rd edition
This book truly has made it easier for us to plan meals for a family member recently diagnosed with diabetes. It is also a great book for anyone who needs to control carb intake.I recommend this publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful guide to meal planning
As a newly diagnosed diabetic,I have had a hard time figuring out what to eat and how to plan a meal, how do I know how much to eat, how to combine foods. It all boiled down to: "What can I eat?"This is not the only source I have used but this is the book that had all of the most accurate information and recommended guidelines.I did not like many, okay most, of the meal planning suggestions but I have been able to take that info and plan my meals based on the foods I do like.I've also tried a greater variety of foods and recipes in order to incorporate the meal planning goals in this book.I'm a long way from where I need to be but this book is an excellent tool to help me get there and I thoroughly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is saving my life
I was always scared to cut carbs out of my diet, because it seems like there has been some negative press for doing so.But, as Dr. Bernstein notes in his book, you never hear of "essential carbohydrate."Essential fats?Yes.Essential proteins?Yes.

Within 1 week of reading the first 1/3 of the book, my blood sugars have not gone above 120 or below 70.And I feel great. And I'm losing weight.

If you want to get better control of your diabetes, reverse Type II (adult-onset) diabetes, or avoid ever getting diabetes, this is the absolute best investment you will ever make.Dr. Bernstein (the author) is a Type I diabetic. He puts in the book what he has been doing to save his own life, and he has had diabetes for 60 years now.The doctor you see for your regular checkups?Unless he is diabetic, he is more worried about his lawn's health than he is your health.

Get the truth from the man who has had the disease for 60+ years, understands the disease, and is on your side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Richard K.Bernstein's Book is Well Named.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a diabetic or a diabetic caretaker.Although I was identified as a diabetic Type II about 6 years ago, and I've read many books about diabetes, and nutritional recommendations, this book explains and informs in easy to understand language ALL you need to know about controllingdiabetes Type I or II.Once I made the changes in my diet and daily physical exercise that Dr. Richard K. Bernstein suggested, I was able to test within the high normal range with exercise and modified meals. I'm grateful to Dr. Bernstein for taking the time to write about a complex disease with severe consequences if it is not controlled. By the way, Dr. Bernstein has been s a Type I diabetic for over 60 years. He knows what he's talking about from personal experience and from a medical doctor's point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all diabetics and their families
I purchased this book in November in an effort to try and better manage my Type 2 diabetes which was is a state of deterioration. At first, I wasn't sure that it would be doable, however within in month I was losing weight without being hungry, by putting Dr Bernstein's recommendations into practice. My blood glucose readings were also improved. The HBA1C was reduced from 7.9% in one month and then in May it was 5.3%. I have also lost 30lb in weight. Now 8 month later, I have BGL reading in the 80-90s.

Dr Bernsteins book contains pretty much all the tools and information to help a motivated person take charge of their health. I, like many others, have diligently followed the usual suspects, like the ADAs recommendations, without seeing improvement in my health, just getting fatter and fatter and sicker.

This is the only program that I have found that gets results. It requires commitment and an acknowledgement that diabetes is a serious disease that requires serious management. If you follow the program you will get results, enjoy better health and stave off the awful complications.

Thank you Dr Bernstein.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the bible for diabetics and low carbers!
This book is the absolute bible for diabetics and folks who want to improve their diets by greatly reducing their carbohydrates.I have been a follower for almost 3 years (am a Type 2) and this man and his book have improved my life greatly. It's not easy to follow at first but it is considerably easier than killing yourself with high blood sugars.I am a convinced this is the way we all should be eating- not just diabetics and I'm a pretty skeptical person.I have read this book at least 4 times from cover to cover and refer to it weekly.Buy it and follow it religiously. It will change your life-for the better!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who's the quack now?
I am a member of the Skeptics Society, so I am no friend of "alternative" medicine, quackery, conspiracy theories, etc. But, in the case of diet and diabetes medicine, it's the establishment-- ADA, AMA, US Dept. of Agriculture, etc. that are the quacks. A charge of "Conspiracy" is a bit extreme, but the processed food industry, Big Agra, Big Pharma, and miss-informed medical professionals all have a vested interest in the status quo.

With mounting scientific evidence that blood sugar control through low-carb is superior to high-carb/low fat, the ADA, etc., have changed their criticism to "Well, it may work, but it's a diet that no one can adhere to..."
Bernstein's detractors seem to be saying, "But life-saving measures are soooooo inconvenient! (Translation: "Eat what you want, then inject yourself with 'industrial strength' shots of insulin!")

I haven't seen any scientific studies of rate of adherence to ADA-type recommendations, but how many people do you know who lose weight permanently on these diets? The first winner of "The Biggest Loser" is now as heavy ever. One website did an extrapolation from the scant data on the success rate of a popular for-profit weight reduction club that usesa diet aligned with the current US Food Pyramid. Result: only 2 out of 1,000 members reach their goal and maintain it for 6 months. Could a low-carb diet be any worse?

Following Dr. Bernstein's recommendations, I maintain normal blood sugar 24/7 without insulin or drugs. I probably would no longer be flagged as diabetic by many tests. A low carb diet is a bit monotonous, but it completely removes my cravings for sweets. On the ADA diet, I was constantly fighting urges for baked goods and snacks.

Bernstein's recommendation of frequent monitoring of blood sugar, rather than being inconvenient, is instead highly motivational. Most people on diets rely on the occasional sudden drop in weight measured on a scale for positive feedback. I have frequent dailyglucose readings to reinforce my commitment to healthy (Yes, healthy!) eating and lifestyle. (Incidentally, the AMA was once violently opposed to allowing diabetics to monitor their own glucose with meters. Go figure...)

Dr. Bernstein's books are not for someone who wants to shed pounds quickly by following a regimen for a short period of time. It's for people who realize they have a life-threatening condition and are seriously committed to responding to that threat no matter how "inconvenient" that may be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle
I found this book very helpfull. The diet I would not use. But the infor was very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Review of 30-day Diabetes Miracle
I don't like this book because it uses some hard-to-find ingredients in the recipes.I only need menus that use natural ingredients, simply cooked.I wish you had the book back.

2-0 out of 5 stars Adult Type 1s---Beware!
As an Adult Type 1, diagnosed 4 yrs ago at age 44, or for any Type 1s probably----beware of this diet!I'm not talking about the people who had unhealthy lifestyle/diets before or Type 2 diabetics. This diet skims the surface for us.I tried it for only a week.Thinking I could "rid" myself of thisdisease....bad idea.

The menus:contains oatmeal and lots of beans, etc....My blood sugars went sky high.Be careful!I am insulin-dependent, 4-5 shots / day.I emailed the publisher and asked them to be more careful with their verbage....just assuming that all diabetics can benefit from this diet.Please.I tried it.After breakfast, took a vigorous hike and still was at 290 at lunch time.

If you're Type 2, great, try the book/diet.But the rest ofyou like me, BEWARE!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Primer for Someone New to Diabetes
Just a quick comment since so many others have commented in detail.

My mother recently received a diagnosis of Type-2 diabetes; therefore, my knowledge is limited but growing daily. This book presents a broad range of sound, helpful information in a clear, easy to understand format.

It also has portions which cause me concern (based on healthy nutrition in general), like recommending you skip dinner altogether and, instead, get all your calories at breakfast and lunch.

Also, please note, if you buy the book thinking you might want to visit the Lifestyle Center of America for their on-site diabetes program, they no longer offer it.As of January 1, 2010, they have a new book and program called The Full Plate Diet ([...].)

They do still offer support information to readers of the book at the site diabetes miracle.org where the password to access further information is "miracle".([...]).The site is worth checking out for detailed imformation on a number of diabetes-related topics and a sample journal. I could find no mention anywhere on the site about how long they will continue to offer this website.

Best of luck to all you seekers of health.

5-0 out of 5 stars 30-Day Diabetes Miracle
As a Health and Wellness Coach I found this book to be a great encouragement for those with diabetes themselves or in the family. The information is well written and documented. The recipes are excellent tasting and well balanced.I highly recommend this book to those without diabetes as the principles apply to other chronic diseases as well as those without overt disease.

Product Description
This title is now available in paperback! Doctors have always considered type II diabetes to be an irreversible condition. But, as Dr Barnard shows in his groundbreaking book, this is simply not true. In a series of studies, he has proven that it is possible to repair insulin function and reverse type II diabetes, and here he shows you how. Using this scientifically proven, life-changing programme, you will be able to control your blood sugar levels three times more effectively than with other well-respected diets for people with diabetes. With Dr Barnard's programme, you will eat regular meals throughout the day, building each meal on the 'New Four Food Groups': vegetables, fruits, whole grains and pulses. This new way of eating will improve the way your body responds to insulin - thereby reversing the defining symptom of diabetes. In fact, many people will find they are able to cut back on medication after just a few weeks on this programme. With its emphasis on high-fibre, low GI foods and its foundation on proven scientific fact, this is a programme that will work for you. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful diet but perhaps potentially harmful
This vegan, low oil, "low glycemic index" diet will undoubtedly, if adopted, constitute a great improvement for many diabetic patients, both types 1 and 2. These individuals will lower their blood sugars, reduce their medication and lose weight, as indeed was the case with the patients referred to in the book.

However, I do not subscribe to Dr. Barnard's allowance of sugar, nor his recommendation to eat generous amounts of fruit, no matter how much he claims these fruits have a low GI. Sugar is sugar, and fruit sugar is just as harmful to a diabetic as sugar cubes. My own type 1 diabetes was provoked by my eating too many bananas (although admittedly I had a preliminary history of undiagnosed hypoglycemia.) Bananas are permitted in this diet, but having become ill by consuming these, I have no faith in being able to cure myself by continuing to eat them (1 banana = 7 teaspoons of sugar). He even finds dried fruits acceptable.

Moreover he has no objection to processed foods/instant soups found in packets or tins, that are generally filled with deleterious additives, sugar, white flour, etc. etc. (he recommends baked beans, but even the organic tinned baked beans I found in my local supermarket contain 13.8% sugar.) Nor has he any objection to the use of non-stick pans or microwave ovens, that are known to be dangerous. In fact he recommends their use.

He bans fish (owing to its high fat content), though it is generally accepted that fish is to be recommended, as it contains beneficial oils. On the whole, he does not distinguish between healthy and unhealthy oils, and does not seem to realize that we need omega 3-containing oils such as flaxseed oil.

He states that by foilowing his diet we will exclude all cholesterol, this being found only in animal foods. But according to Joel Wallach in his book "Dead doctors don't lie" a certain amount of cholesterol is necessary, since one can die from too little as well as too much cholesterol. Also I certainly believe that the consumption of eggs does not raise one's cholesterol level unless they are fried in unhealthy fats/oils.

Under any circumstances, I'm not sure that the author's extreme low-fat diet is in any way necessary for type 1 diabetics, since he explains that his diet was put together on the basis of research indicating that type 2 diabetics have an excess of fat inside their muscle cells that interferes with insulin's intracellular signalling process, resulting in insulin resistance. Therefore they are helped by a low-fat diet. But type 1 diabetics do not suffer from insulin resistance but from a faulty pancreas that has difficulty in producing insulin, so why should they exclude beneficial oils?

Dr. Barnard's tenet that the addition to the diet of a standard multi-vitamin including B12 will provede "complete nutrition" is ludicrous. Though he does in a later ultra-short chapter provide an absolutely minimal list of recommended supplements.

To sum up, this book may well be helpful for those type 2 diabetics who have previously eaten atrociously but are prepared to commit to following this diet, but since he admits it will not cure type 1 diabetics I would rather follow Cass Ingram's diet as described in his book "Natural cures for diabetes". And I feel that avoiding healthy oils to the extent prescribed by Dr. Barnard could be harmful in the long run.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
As a diabetes educator, this book is an important resource to have on hand when patients want to see how a diet that both helps control diabetes and is vegetarian can be managed. The American Diabetes association changed the format of this book series, so it is most easily available on Amazon.I strongly encourage anyone who is interested to purchase and try out this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
I am known for for being somewhat of a gormet cook and I think this book with its recipes could fool anyone into thinking I spent hours in the kitchen. The illustrations are fantastic, it would be a good book for a beginner because the pictures are great and the directions simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Month of Meals: Vegetarian Pleasures
An excellent cook book for planning daily meals. After placing my order, it took a short time for this cook book to arrive in my mail box, and in excellent/new condition.I will be using this book often.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
We bought this book about 12-15 years ago and I wanted to see if it was updated. The book was real good then and I tried lots of things that didn't even sound like something we would eat. They were all good and passable then and probably still are.It must have been put together by someone who know what they were doing. The only thing I object to is when premade items (like soup, or roll mixes) are used in the "homemade" recipes.

3-0 out of 5 stars disorganized book
First I must admit that I hate every book that doesn't have at least one image every two recipes. This book has about 10 images for the entire book.
I think the recipes are what some could qualify as simple, but really the good term would be obvious, you could figure it out yourself. Imagine what you would put in a spinach lasagna... Did you guess? lasagna pasta, tomato sauce of some sort, cheese and spinach. A little bit more taste? add onion and garlic and a little bit of dried oregano. Come on! Can't you make it up yourself? The recipes in that book have nothing new at all. Boring.
An other thing that infuriates me when I use a cooking book is when it uses prepared food. When a book tells me that I could cook spaghetti and use canned spaghetti sauce, but spice it up with dried italian herbs, I would slap its author with a cooking mitt... And you call that a recipe? I call that a college student meal. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars All Natural and Tastey
All Natural and Tastey.I simply make a list of the ingrediences that I need for the recepie that I will be preparing, head to my local farmer's market, and then return home and cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan
I'm a fan of this cookbook author. I have her newest book, but decided to try this one too since I love her other book so much. It is definitely healthy, but it's as tasty or tastier than I expected it to be since the recipes are so good for you. All the recipes that I have tried are pretty easy and fast, but the end result makes the dishes look impressive. I have diabetes in my family so this helps me get a headstart on preventing it, hopefully. Another winner of a cookbook!

2-0 out of 5 stars Carb-heavy recipes not appropriate for modern diabetes care
Despite the positive reviews already posted, I cannot whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone with diabetes. While it does follow the current guidelines of the ADA, I would challenge any diabetics to see how their blood glucose responds to a Mango Lassi (p.272, 27g carbs) or to a serving of Roasted Garlic Mashed Baby Creamer Potatoes (p. 254, 20g carbs). At least Ms. Newgent includes a "Fresh Fact" on the page to say that "Potatoes can raise your blood glucose level quickly, so keep an eye on your serving size." Good luck with that...

There are some worthwhile recipes in the book (e.g. Party Peanut Chicken Satay, p. 88, 5g carbs), and at least she lists the carb content so that the carb-aware diabetic can make his/her own decisions about what to eat. Fortunately, there are a great number of cookbooks for the carb-conscious diabetic; I would start with Richard Bernstein's "The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein's Low-Carbohydrate Solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy meals and good for you
This is a great book for those dealing with diabetes. The recipes are simple and easy. There are many naturally gluten-free recipes and many that don't call for soy. (I am allergic to soy, dairy & gluten and my mother has diabetes). Tonight I made the Pepper Quinoa Salad with Basil. It was very good and quick to prepare. In the dessert section there are simple recipes such as Balsamic Strawberries and Grilled Figs. All in all, this is a great book. Thanks to Jackie Newgent for putting together this fantastic resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty food, easy recipes -- what's not to like?
I am originally from Louisiana, and French, Cajun, and Italian dishes (the more complicated and richer, the better) are second nature to me, but at 56 I was unexpectedly diagnosed with Type II diabetes. By inclination, I am one of those persons who doesn't care how "good" something is for me -- if it doesn't taste good, I'm not going to eat it! And I despise the "taste" of artificial sweeteners, and don't believe they do my body any good either.

Well, after having this book a week, I've discovered that the author seems to have an excellent set of priorities:(1) Food should look and taste good; (2) it shouldn't take forever to prepare; (3) it should follow sound thinking for helping you get your diabetes under control.

Although I consider myself an innovative cook, I would never have thought of marinating fresh sliced strawberries in balsamic vinegar. Delicious! Or how about a breakfast patty made from chopped granny smith apples and chicken breasts?

In short, if you have diabetes or cook for someone suffering from it, I highly recommend this book. If you are short of time, and just want to eat healthier, this simple book is very enjoyable and creative! ... Read more
