3-0 out of 5 stars New Glucose Revolution
I'm enjoying reading through this book.I hope it helps me in selecting foods which will improve my health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent infomation and easy to understand
This book gives a whole new perspective on how to eat correctly to control blood sugar.Whether you are pre-diabetic (as I am), gestational diabetic, type I diabetic, or type II diabetic (as hubby is)...the information is in here for the taking!Being a Cajun, I don't care much for most of the recipes in here, but the information is worth its weight in gold...you won't regret getting this book and you will use it for life.If you get only one book on diabetes, get this one!

2-0 out of 5 stars Some helpful info!
This book has some helpful info but I was looking for a book with the complete glycemic index for all foods and this does not have that.

2-0 out of 5 stars I agree with B Real
I agree with "B Real".The brand names mentioned in the tables are very useful if you live in Australia. The authors also seem to think that aspartame and sucralose are harmless and stevia is bad. They should read "Sweet Deception" by Joseph Mercola and "Excitotoxins, The Taste That Kills" by Russell Blaylock. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide
The Best Life Guide to Managing Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes is a terrific book I wish I'd had 15 years ago, before I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. I might not have wound up with the disease if I'd had this information in the Pre-Diabetic stage. I recommend every Type II Diabetic buy and read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, with practical plan to be followed.
I've entered into the pre-diabetic range for the last two years, and I've managed my diet and exercise to avoid getting into diabetes. Besides getting the routine semi-annual lab blood testing, I also purchase the do-it-yourself glucose tester to monitor my blood sugar on monthly basis.

Over the past two years, I read some books about diabetes. Comparing with other books that I read, this book offers a useful, sensible approach to deal with this problem. The strategies outlined here are workable and the information is well presented. The author understands that no one can make every needed changes all at once, so he encourages readers to takes steps in several phases. Also, the various meal plan examples in this book are reasonable....while meal plans on some other books tend to be out of ordinary of what most people will regularly make and eat....their meal plans are either too fancy for everyday meals, or expensive for everyday meals.

In summary, this is a book worth reading and keeping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, practical information well presented
I am prediabetic and am struggling to turn things around. This book offers a useful, sensible approach to dealing with this problem.I learned more about understanding my blood glucose tests than I did working with a diabetes educator. The recipes are nice. The suggestions for becoming more active are gently approached for those struggling with exercise. I read many diet and nutrition books -- this is one I will keep and refer to many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat Less, Move More!
Follow the recommnedations in this book to save your life! Or at least to improve the quality of it.It's time to get serious. A start is to read this no-nonsense, well-organized book on the subject.

The strategies outlined here are workable, and the information is well presented.

The information in this book is life saving.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really seems to work
I recently ordered this cookbook for my husband who has early-onset diabetes. His bloodsugar slowly started to rise. Then we got this book and my husband started to cook, going strictly by this book. (I like it that he is cooking now too, I always had to do it before and I was really getting tired of cooking after 46 years) He started a little over 2 weeks ago and his bloodsugar went from in the 140s down to 113 and 110, he measures it once a week. It never was that low before! I hope he will keep on using it. Now he even wants to bake a cake, he has never baked a cake in his life, never even wanted to eat much cake, that's the opposite of me. I eat that way now too even though I don't have it. I hope to loose some weight from it. It doesn't taste the greatest but it's not too bad. I can see that it could reverse diabetes, he just has to stay with it.
Two days later : Well the cake did not turn out very good, it was made with 1/3 c whole wheat flour and 1 tablespoon baking powder !! That can't be, has to be a mistake. He also used salt- substitute instead of salt, for the dough, this time it should have been the real salt. I think he doesn't want to bake anymore cakes. It was the apple cake in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy recepies
this book is easy to follow and I was able to get the sugar substitute at the local health food store.
color pictures of the completed food would be nice.

I found out about this marvelous book by watching a video on youtube.com.
As with most books I buy I found it on Amazon.com and the price was of
course quite right. The book is very well documented with many studies
and practical sense recipes, etc.,.
I am very happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious and Practical
This is a great book if you are cooking for someone with diabetes (including yourself)and are interested in food that is delicious and "normal".I've tried MANY of these recipes; they are great! Not only will you eat well, but you'll learn a lot about how to cook in a way that supports good health, whether diabetic or not. Everyone in your family will love the food. This book is the practical companion to Reversing Diabetes, also by Julian Whitaker, M.D. -- an excellent educational book that gives you the WHY behind this approach to healthy food prep to support health (especially for diabetics).

Product Description
Diabetes has become a seemingly unstoppable national epidemic, affecting more than twenty million Americans. Conventional wisdom calls it incurable, but renowned Dr. Gabriel Cousens counters that claim with this breakthrough book. There Is a Cure for Diabetes lays out a three-week plan for reversing the negative genetic expression of diabetes to a physiology of health and well-being. Dr. Cousens’s method, widely tested at his famous Tree of Life centers, is to reset the DNA through green juice fasting and a 100% organic, nutrient-dense, vegan, low-glycemic, low-insulin-scoring, and high-mineral diet of living foods in the first twenty-one days. Both practical and inspirational, the book explains how to abandon the widespread “culture of death”–symbolized by addictive junk food–that fosters diabetes in favor of a more natural, nurturing approach. The program renders insulin and related medicines unnecessary within four days as the blood sugar drops to normal levels; and the diabetic shifts into a non-diabetic physiology within two weeks. The third week focuses on live-food preparation, featuring 100 delicious raw recipes. Dr. Cousens emphasizes regular consultations, monitoring blood chemistries, and emotional support, and includes a one-year support program to help maintain a diabetes-free life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ideas wonderful, raw does cure diabetes, writing is scattered
Dr. Gabriel Cousens should be celebrated now as one of the most ingenious doctors of our time! Other physicians should all be required to study his findings. Dr. Cousens is obviously a genius and could benefit from a well-organized and practical editor (probably female mind - no offense intended). The book is a bit scattered and no real layout of food ideas organized to follow easily. I was 100% raw for over a year when I got the book, so I already had a pretty good understanding of practical implementation. Still I found it difficult to incorporate an improved regimen from this book (my reason for the purchase). I can say that my diabetes has all but vanished (from 9.0 A1C with meds. to 6.1 A1C without meds). My heartburn is gone for good, all my bloodwork is great, and I don't catch colds or flu anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars SPANISH VERSION AVAILABLE.
About this book. Excellent. Just like the other reviews.

For those who would prefer to read the book in Spanish, please google "Hay una Cura para laDiabetes - Gabriel Cousens". You should find it in his Tree of Culture Store online.

Happy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Type 2 Diabetes Book Review
The book was for my wife.We could not find it at any bookstore.Thank you for such prompt, wonderful service. The book is a gem and my wife is learning many new things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eating Patterns for Highly Motivated People
This technical book offers helpful advice in reducing weight and blood sugar levels. On the other hand, Dr. Cousens' plan is extreme, expensive and confusing. As other reviewers noted, not many people could subsist on the Tree of Life program, at least not without help from the costly Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center. The book does include beneficial information, such as beanpod tea use and lists of essential foods, juices, herbs, vitamins and minerals.Take that information and practice as diligently as possible.Personally I find the book's rigid regimen near impossible to maintain, at least to the levels Dr. Cousens requires.I have found a more do-able diet/lifestyle approach by reading and following the free advice of David Mendosa at [...].This website is crammed full of useful information trying to achieve the same goals as Dr. Cousens' book--but it's easier to understand and practice in real life.

5-0 out of 5 stars like a good habit - hard to form and easy to live with
I recommend this book for anyone dealing with blood sugar problems. Its one of those books you read and than refer to many times.I've recommended it to 6 or 8 people already and I haven't even finished it yet.Its a really good book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
I don't do much cooking and don't particularly like to cook but I've found these recipes fairly easy and very tasty and best of all they have ingredients that are easily found at the local grocery store. It's smaller than most cookbooks so you don't feel like you're weight training with it.I'd give it 5 stars but it's a cookbook so the most I can manage is 4. Highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Indefensibly bad
If you like iceberg lettuce and fish sticks and think that Italian parsley and cilantro are interchangeable in a salsa recipe, then you might like this cookbook. For the rest of us, it's another one that carries the AHA and ADA approval imprints, which blows the credibility of any cookbook that does for me. Try the EatingWell one.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks!
I really like the recipes in this book. Easy to follow and make. Everything I have tried has been very good. One of the best cookbooks I have found for both diabetes and heart healthy meals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Devil's Food Cupcakes are Divine!
I bought this as a gift for my mom, who is a diabetic/heart patient, for her birthday.I decided to use the Devil's Food Cupcake recipe to make her birthday cake.YUM!My whole family (including hubby, teenager, and picky 9 year old) thought it was great and didn't think it tasted at all like a special diet recipe. Two weeks after ordering this for my mom, I myself found out that I'm pre-diabetic and will be ordering myself a copy of this book very soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Food Doesn't Have to Mean Fast Fat
In today's fast-pace world, it seems impossible to totally avoid fast food, no matter how much I would like to.Whether rushing to out-of-town football games after work or helping my son with a school project, I sometimes find myself with only two choices ... eat fast food or don't eat at all.Sound familiar to anyone?

Guide to Healthy Fast-Food Eating to the rescue! This second edition book, endorsed by the American Diabetes Association, will help you make smarter choices when fast food is your only option. While helpful for everyone, this book should be in every diabetic's pocket (or pocketbook). In addition to nutrition facts for the most popular fast-food restaurants in America, this book provides tips for diabetes-related dining dilemmas.I wish we would have had it two years ago, when my dad (a 50 year diabetic) passed out cold in a restaurant because he had administered his diabetes medication too long before our meal.Tips for prevention of these sorts of disasters are included in the chapter, Restaurant Dilemmas and Diabetes.

In each of the chapters offering food selections at thirteen different restaurants, the author gives us the "light and lean" choice, as well as the "healthy `n' hearty" choice.Evaluated on calories, percent of calories from fat, total milligrams of cholesterol, and total milligrams of sodium, the difference between the two lies in the calories."Healthiest Bets" are marked with a checkmark.A chart of selections gives you the "skinny" on anything else you'd like to know about, such as amounts of saturated fat, sodium, total fat, and exchanges.

If you're like me, and you sometimes have to make a choice between no food or fast food, this book belongs in your handbag or briefcase, right beside your copy of Eat This, Not That.Fast food doesn't have to mean fast fat ... you just "need the facts, ma'am."

The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because I wish it included more restaurants.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast food guide

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK
THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON SENSE HEALTH BOOKS OF LATELY.THE INFORMATION IS ALMOST COMMON SENSE IN THAT WE CAN CLEARLY SEE THE REASONING PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK JUST BY LOOKING AROUND AT THE EVER INCREASING ILLS OF OUR SOCIETY. WHILE WRITTEN TO BENEFIT DIABETICS AND THOSE ON THEIR WAY THERE,IT IS GOOD FOR ALL OF US. NO HYPE, HOAX OR BIG PROMISES,JUST COMMON SENSE NUTRITIONAL , MEDICALLY PROVEN ADVICE. THIS BOOK SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED WITH THE LOW CARB DIET CRAZE,BECAUSE IT IS NOT A FAD.SEE, YOUR GRANDMA WAS RIGHT, WATCH OUT FOR THEM STARCHES!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Explanation Ever
I finally understand the relationship between carbohydrates and starch to my overall well-being. Dr. Thompson not only provides a layman's explanation of the glycemic index but gave me the tools to determine what foods to avoid or at least eat in moderation. i am not a diabetic but if I were, I would commit this book to memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!!!!!
For the first time I understand why I have problems keeping the weight off!! This book was a revelation to me. What I really appreciated was that Dr. Thompson writes in a way that I could understand. It is the only diet that I have been able to follow and it works!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Atkins

10 years ago I lost 100lbs using Dr Atkin's low carb books and felt great. I then met and married my dear husband, moved to America, had children and several miscarriages, partook of the terribly sweet foods and excessive portion sizes until last Oct. I had gone to the doctor for a knee problem and discovered my BP was high. I was horrified, knowing I was overweight again by some 50lbs, and expected to have a heart attack immediately. That visit was a true blessing as it was the shock I needed to change my health again. I went back to Atkins, started riding my bike, mounted on an indoor trainer since we have snowy winters, 30mins 5 times a week. After 3 days once again I was feeling so much better, sleeping better, had more energy.I came to Amazon looking for any updated Atkins/low carb books and found Rob Thompson's book. I confess I got it from the library to read but then bought it for my Dad, who has type 2 diabetes and he thinks it great too! It is less severe than Atkins, which I believe makes it more doable long term. He explains things very easily and has really added modern findings since Atkins day as far as how foods affect your blood sugar levels. I have been on his way of eating etc for 3 months and lost 12lbs and several inches.I would encourage you to record your measurements rather than rely solely on your scales. My blood pressure is now normal and so are my cholestrol numbers.I would not hesitate to recommend this book and his others to you, even if you are not struggling with weight issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener and a big help
For years I've been concentrating on a low or NO sugar diet but that didn't stop me from eating bread, rolls, pasta and potatoes. Dr. Thompson's book has shed light on the importance of concentrating on a NO STARCH or low starch diet to control or prevent diabetes. I thought that would be impossible for me.But I found, that as the days went by on my diet,my cravings for starchy foods abated.NOW, after a few weeks, I don't miss bread at all.I lost 16 pounds.Of course I also follow a strict exercise plan.I do pushups and walk 40 minutes a day.Dr. Thompson's book offers good advice on coping with controlling blood glucose levels. My readings are normal. My doctor is pleased with my diet plan. And I find that I can eat fruit and even ice cream and still keep my sugar levels down.
This isn't rocket science.A lot of what's in this book has been known by doctors for years. But this book is surprisingly easy to read and understand. And it offers recipes to add a little variety to your diet. I highly recommend this book.It changed my life and I hope it helps others as well. ... Read more

If you or a family member has diabetes, food preparation may seem like a chore or a deprivation. What can you cook that tastes good and fits the diabetes guidelines? The authors of Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies, diabetes expert Alan Rubin (who also wrote Diabetes for Dummies) and registered dietician Fran Stach, have come up with dishes that will please not just the person with diabetes but the whole family. The diabetes diet is healthy for all of us, and if we can make it taste good, we all benefit.

That's where this book shines. The 112 recipes are as creative and tasty as they are healthy, yet most take a half hour or less of preparation (plus cooking time). Recipes include Soy Waffles, Crispy Corn French Toast, Portobello Paté, Carrot Soup with Leek and Blood Orange, Mango Tortilla Salad, Oriental Beef and Noodle Salad, and Spaghetti Squash with Fresh Basil, plus a variety of fish, meat, and poultry entrées. Some of the recipes were created by chef Denise Sharf; others were contributed by gourmet restaurants. Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies is more than a compilation of recipes. The book also gives guidelines for "what, when, and how much" to eat, including tips for visualizing portions (an ounce of meat is the size of a matchbox; an ounce of cheese is the size of a domino; a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse). You'll get shopping and cooking tips and illustrated food-preparation steps to help novice cooks.

Like the whole For Dummies line, the style is simple, friendly, clever, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, such as, "Don't go to a paint store and expect to get thinner there." -- Joan Price ... Read more

I never write reviews, but, since I decided to return it, but found shipping would have been almost as much as the book itself, I'm stuck with an item that is usless to me. I was very displeased with this book. It called for eating sugar and starches not healthy for diabetics. Makes no common sense!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought it would be.
The book is okay. Not very detailed or in-depth. A lot of generalities. Would I buy it again or recommend it to others? No. It just doesn't live up to the "Dummies" series.

use the GI Diet for health and weight control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shoppers Guide to GI Values
While not as comprehensive as some of the other books in the series, it gives a good, basic explaination of what the GI is about. It's small enough to toss into my handbag on grocery day and for the price I thought it was a good value.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rating the New Glucose Revolution Guide
I have just started a low glycemic index diet, and needed a guide to go by on ratings for gly. index of food. I really looked forward to getting this book. I was somewhat dissapointed when I couldn't find certain foods in the guide. I also have not heard of "President's Choice, Blue Moon" products. Is there a reason that it has to be stated on every product they sell? I realize that this product is probably popular in what ever country that this book is written in, Australia, or maybe Canada. Otherwise, I do use this book on a daily basis to look up the gly. index number for the foods on my diet...or if they aren't on my diet.
Thank you. [...]

A must read for newly diagnosed diabetics and long term diabetics. Peter Germano Ph.DTAGS;Clinically informative, provides alternatives to information and dietary plans that are archaic and ineffective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Dr. Bernstein's book is a great roadmap for Type II diabetics to follow. The only negative is his promulgation of artifical sweetners, which are very toxic. I hope in a future book he would consider promoting natural healthy alternatives such as Stevia.

Left me first say that this is the best book on Diabetes that I have ever read.Because of this book, I went from an average blood sugar count of close to 200 mg/dl to closer to 100 mg/dl IN A WEEK'S TIME.While I am not a medical doctor I would say that this is the "GOLD STANDARD" on diabetes management. In fact, I intend to try to convince my doctor at the VA to read it.By reading it you could:
1st add years to your life
2nd save your toes from amputation
3rdsave your feet from amputation

And, in my opinion, prevent:
- Alzheimer's
- Kidney failure, and kidney dialysis, plus avoid
- Neuropathy and
- Blindness
All for less than $25.00.I'd say it was worth the price.

Here's some of what you can get:

PART ONE
Before You Start

1) Diabetes, the Basics
2) Tests. Baseline Measures of Your Disease and Risk Profile
3) Your Diabetic Tool Kit.Supplies you will need and where get them
4) How and when to measure blood sugar
5) The laws of small numbers
6) Establishing a Treatment Plan: The Basic Treatment Plans and How We Structure Them.

PART TWO

I found, having prediabetes myself, the book to be very informative. After being diagnosed with prediabetes I was told to no longer eat sugar. When you have prediabetes you have the opportunity to reverse it if you acquire the right information and follow it. Had I not found this book I would probably have diabetes today. This book teaches you how to choose the proper treatments, how to check your sugar levels and when, what tests are needed to aid you in your journey, what complications can arise due to low and high sugar levels and how to notice them and treat them, what food to eat, how much exercise you need, and just about everything in between. Product Description

"Worldwide diabetes epidemic predicted."-- Reuters, Semptember 8, 1998

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, and many of the 2,200 people in the United States diagnosed with diabetes each day are unaware they have it until major complications arise.Prevention and treatment of diabetes have become an urgent priority, as the global diabetes have a serious impact on the aging American population.Particularly alarming is type 2, or "late-onset" diabetes, a chronic illness that impairs the body's ability to use the insulin it produces to regulate blood sugar levels. In The Diabetes Cure, Vern Cherewatenko, M.D., has developed an innovative program to cure type 2 diabetes using HCA--hydroxycitric acid--to enhance the effectiveness of the body's own insulin.

HCA is an herbal compound found naturally in the brindle berry and is sold over the counter.Taken in conjunction with the mineral chromium, HCA can improve your body's response to insulin without resorting to some of the "harder" and more expensive glucose-control drugs on the market. Best of all, there are no side effects.Dr. Cherewatenko counts HCA and chromium consumption as one of the nine steps to curing diabetes--others presented and discussed comprehensively in the book include exercise, stress reduction, healthy eating habits, and frequent doctor visits.

Dr. Cherewatenko also provides important warning signs that can help prevent diabetes in those determined to be at highest risk. And if you alreadyhave the disease, he will show you how to halt it'sprogression and possibly reverse its debilitating effects. With the aid of the nine simple steps outlined in The Diabetes Cure, you can beat diabetes and get your health in order. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cure or Remission?
First, let me start by saying I haven't read this book YET. I have looked through it and believe it has a lot of valuable information so it's on my reading list.

As a RN who works with diabetics, I'm always looking for healthier ways to help them. The standard protocols do not work and the American Diabetic Association allows foods that should never be considered as part of a healthy diet. Additionally, when a diabetic ends up on dialysis, they have a renal diet that's not exactly compatible with a diabetic diet. It's very frustrating.

I also work with very poor people who sometimes have a challenge buying groceries, let alone supplements. I continue to believe the solution is to teach prevention EARLY. Doctors are still way behind the curve in identifying and intervening with PREDIABETICS. If we had more identification and "treatment" of prediabetics, we could slow down or prevent the onset in a significant portion of people.

I agree with one reviewer - not sure you can say CURED. To me, cured means you can eat anything you want - even a Snickers bar - and your blood sugars will remain normal. Once you have diabetes, I don't believe that's ever possible.

I do believe you can have a REMISSION and maintain remission through diet and lifestyle changes.I've done that with many of my patients - and not by using the ADA guidelines. I've had patients who were told they will always be on insulin come off insulin and even oral hypoglycemics. Their blood sugars, triglycerides and cholesterol return to normal. It takes time and work - you must, must, must change your lifestyle.

Another issue not many practitioners address that can contribute to elevated blood sugars are medications, pain, inflammation, parasites and so on.Sometimes even a "cure" is simply treating the symptoms. But, this is where lifestyle changes are so critical as they can begin addressing the root cause of a problem.

We also must begin a pardigm shift in our thinking: while diabetes is a disease, it is still a symptom of something awry in the body and we must begin asking WHAT and WHY?

I'm so frustrated with the system in our country and poor people's inability to do the things that will truly help them that I'm considering starting a nonprofit to allow me to do those things. It's important to educate people but if they don't have the tools or the money to buy the tools, it does them no good.

The information in this book and others like it is an excellent place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I am currently reading this book and it seems to be very good. I don't know if it is truly a cure but the recommendations seem to be on target.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Cure Review
Book was really out of date when it came to the facts it represented in the book (published in 1999). Not sure that the current thought agrees with the use of the supplement as effective for dealing with diabetes. However, the principles of low carbohydrates, exercise, etc. are timeless and very helpful to the newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.Seller was great on sending it on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Cure:A Natural Plan...
Excellent. This book is easy to read and contains common sense medical advice that embraces an integrative approach to healing.Written by an M.D., even the most conservative patient can be confident that the recommendations in this book are based on long term trials and personal case studies of the author himself, and his patients. In other words, this was not written by some New Age guru or quack selling snake oils.Dr. Cherewatenko does not sell anything but does include a list of Consumer Reports' Top 8 glucometers in his book, as well as specific supplements by brand name that he recommends.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their overall health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Job Well Done
Real - Life Guide To Diabetes.......I think the book is absolutely wonderful. It's informative in a fun way it keeps your intersect, it's 2009. I don't have diabetes but my husband has Type 2 and I pick it up from time to time because I think I worry more about his health than he does.
Great job to Joy Pape and Hope Warsaw I wish them much success they deserve it. The girls left no stone unturned......Again Much Success Phyllis Shulman

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about diabetes in one place
The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes by Hope S. Warshaw and Joy Pape doesn't take its name lightly. It's chock full of practical, useful information you can integrate into your daily life right now. I've had diabetes for nearly six years and, even though I read everything I can about the disease, no one source has EVERYTHING you need to know all in one place. This book does. From exercise to medication to nutrition, it covers all the bases and then some. You have to think about what you're going to eat, when you're going to exercise, and when you're going to take your medicines. This book will show you how to create an optimum life plan and how to deal with things that come up that can wreak havoc with your plan, such as illness or travel.

The design of the book makes it easy to read. Each chapter has a "What You'll Learn" section right at the beginning. Scattered throughout the guide are sections like "By the Numbers," which provides important statistics; "Wonder," which answers questions about diabetes; and "Tips and Tactics," which tells you how to deal with many aspects of diabetes in plain language that's easy to understand. There's even a "Red Flag" section that provides warnings and cautions people with diabetes need to know.

This book is so comprehensive that you'll never have to search for most of the information again. I hope the American Diabetes Association and the two authors update the information regularly.

I think the best thing about this book is that it gives people with diabetes hope - hope that, even though they've been diagnosed with diabetes, they can still live a pretty normal life and reduce complications of diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best diabetes title in a long time...
It's been a while since I've read such a great title about diabetes. Certainly no other diabetes book I have reviewed is so well laid out, incorporating compelling visuals in full color to complement the easy-to-understand yet substantial content written by two of the most respected figures in today's diabetes education world.

The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes has something for everyone: those with type 2 diabetes (the majority of patients living with this chronic condition) as well as those with type 1 diabetes; those who have been recently diagnosed as well as those who've had diabetes for a while (but can use a refresher).

The three sections that make up The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes are proof that the authors know what they are talking about. The 21 chapters constitute a complete reference that touches on diabetes basics (dealt with in section 1, Build Your Strong Foundations), how to manage your diabetes through monitoring, diet, medication and lifestyle changes (covered in section 2, Create Your Real-Life Diabetes Plan) and an advanced section that touches on matters that range from sexuality and traveling with diabetes to health insurance and protecting your rights (discussed in section 3, When Life Happens).

All in all, this constitutes a must-read for all people touched by diabetes. ... Read more

Product Description
The twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes are a 21st-century time bomb. The Atkins organisation is renowned for their work on diabetes and this book sets out a controlled carb diet and nutrition regime to help people lose weight and prevent, treat and even reverse diabetes. The conventional 'healthy' Western diet, based upon large amounts of carbohydrates and a small amount of protein and fat, results for many people in a state of hyperinsulinism, a key factor in developing diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that helps to regulate blood sugar levels in the body. The Atkins nutritional plan, based on eating the foods that balance your hormones to regulate blood sugar levels, controls the production of insulin and is therefore a great tool in treating and preventing diabetes. The Atkins plan also promotes healthy weight loss and freedom from other conditions, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. The book contains all the nutritional information diabetes sufferers need to plan their new, healthy diet, as well as recipes so the plan can be put into practice.Amazon.com Review
Two colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Atkins take on the obesity epidemic's deadly twin: type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mary Vernon and Jacqueline Eberstein, RN, adapt the carb-cutting, fat-allowing Atkins nutritional approach as a preemptive strike against this fast-growing killer. Diabetes--defined here as a condition in which glucose or blood sugar is above the normal range--is viewed as a preventable problem. "What we hope we have created in this book is a realistic and practical guide to wiping out type 2, one person at a time." Since obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes, they begin with the "fat lie" (i.e., the belief that fat causes obesity) to voice the Atkins mantra: low fat means high carbs and high carbs are broken down into sugar. With a convincing mix of essay/picture testimonials, clinical studies, quizzes, checklists, and menu planners and recipes, Vernon and Eberstein make the case for diet and lifestyle changes to alter the metabolism of those at risk for diabetes. They have done a yeoman's job of translating Atkins'smedical nutrition advice into a step-by-stepprogram. One can quibble about their missionary zeal or the omnipresent eggs in the breakfast sample menus. At times, the scientific data are overly detailed or hidden within a quiz. Thankfully, there is a spot-on summary of the book's paradigm-busting ideas in the appendix.-- Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetics BEWARE of Adkins
My book came quickly. It was in excellent used condition. I would buy from this seller again.

HOWEVER the Adkins Diabetics diet itself is still dangerous for people like me who are already Diabetic.
After 12 days on the plan I was in the Hospital's ER... The doctors there said diabetics should NEVER
let themselves go into Ketosis, it is dangerous. Since Adkins is all about Ketosis all I can say is
BEWARE! Don't get me wrong I have always thought the Adkins diet is the best, just NOT for diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins for Diabetics great program!
I have now been on the Atkins For Diabetics plan for almost a month. While my body has responded nicely, my husband's, who has been diabetic for much longer and whose liver seems overactive, has not. My sugar is dropping, his is not. So be sure you communicate with your doctor about changes you are making (just as the Atkins Program suggests) because you may need more carbs and not know it. But when I need to take my jeans off, now I don't even have to unsnap or unzip them, I've lost that much in three weeks!(I neither measured nor weighed, but I can tell I'm smaller.) Give it a try!

Also, as far as Amazon's role in my purchase, the estimate of how quickly I would receive my book was two weeks longer than it actually took, so if you are very close to the point of origin, you too might get yours in less time than you thought! My book was in pristine condition when it arrived. I have since made it mine, but it started out great!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Improvement Over Traditional Low-Fat, High-Carb Diabetic Diet
I must give credit to Dr. Robert C. Atkins for popularizing an approach - carbohydrate restriction - that helps people with diabetes control their disease, and likely helps prevent type 2 diabetes in others.Vernon and Eberstein do a great job explaining his program.

I can best summarize this book by noting that it is the standard Atkins diet with a few modifications: 1) special supplements2) you add additional carbs to your diet more slowly3) the warning that diabetics may well end up with a lower acceptable lifetime carbohydrate intake level.

By way of review, the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution $5.99 is a very low-carb diet, particularly in the two-week induction phase."Very low-carb" means lots of meat, chicken, fish, eggs, limited cheese, and 2-3 cups daily of salad greens and low-carb veggies like onions, tomatoes, broccoli, and snow peas. After induction phase, you slowly add back carbs on a weekly basis until weight loss stalls, then you cut back on carbs.

As an adult medicine specialist, I have no expertise in pediatrics.I didn't read the two chapters related to children.

The authors present "complimentary medicine"in a favorable light.Unsuspecting readers need to know that much of complementary medicine is based on hearsay and anecdote, not science-based evidence. In that same vein, the two chapters on supplements for diabetes and heart disease recommend a cocktail of supplements that I'm not convinced are needed.I don't know a single endocrinologist or cardiologist prescribing these concoctions. Then again, I could be wrong.

Vernon and Eberstein provide two excellent chapters on exercise.

A month of meal plans and recipes are provided for 20, 40, and 60-gram carbohydrate levels.[The average American is eating 250-300 g of carbs daily.]The recipes look quick and easy, but I didn't prepare or taste any of them.

The 5-hour glucose and insulin tolerance test (GTT, paged 61) that Dr. Atkins reportedly ran on all patients who came to him is rarely done in other medical clinics. This doesn't mean it's wrong, but certainly out of the mainstream. The authors admit that at least a few people will have to count calories - specifically, limit total calories - if the basic program doesn't control diabetes, prediabetes, and the metabolic syndrome.Limiting portion size will speed weight loss, they write.

What we don't know with certainty is, will long-term Atkins aficionados miss out on the health benefits of higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains?Much of the scientific literature suggests, "Yes."

What if we compare the long-term outlooks of a diabetic Atkins follower with a poorly controlled diabetic who's 80 pounds overweight and eating a standard American diet? The Atkins follower is quite likely to be healthierand live longer.

Product Description

Until Dr. Barnard’s scientific breakthrough, most health professionals believed that once you developed diabetes, you were stuck with it—and could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems. But as this groundbreaking work reveals, this simply is not true. In a series of studies—the most recent funded by the National Institutes of Health—Dr. Barnard has shown that it is possible to repair insulin function and reverse type 2 diabetes. By following his scientifically proven, life-changing program, diabetics can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the standard diet; and cut back on and in some cases eliminate medications while reducing the risk of diabetes complications.

"The long overdue epic scientific breakthrough in diabetes is here…an obvious must-read for health professionals and for diabetic and potential diabetic patients." —Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD, preventive cardiology consultant, Cleveland Clinic

"This is the approach to follow…the clinically proven way to get your blood sugar under control… and start living again."—John McDougall, MD, founder and medical director of the McDougall program

"Dr. Barnard’s book is no exaggeration…The signs and symptoms of diabetes can be reversed, and he’s got the evidence to prove it."—Jennie Brand-Miller, PhD, author of The New Glucose Revolution

2-0 out of 5 stars Disapointed-Old ideas! Soy is a No , No.
For a Dr. that is suppose to be very up to date on the what is happening with foods, this book has really disapointed me!
This book is about being a Vegetarian to keep your blood suger down and lose weight, which I do not have any problem with. But I do have a big problem when he says to get your protien, herecommends to eat everything SOY!
Soy has now been proven to be one of our unhealthy foods.
Its fed to cows, pigs, Chickens etc. to fatten them up.
We now know Soy causes, Thyroid problems, Cancer ,etc.
We are finding Soy is causeing Obesity in kids and Adults.
Fermented Soy does not cause those problems, and that is what Asian have been eating , NOT the
American Soy as we know it.

If you read your food labels, there is sometype of Soy in it, since its so cheap to make.
It makes a good filler.

Fermented Soy does not cause those problems, and that is what Asian have been eating , NOT the
American Soy as we know it.

If anyone is interested, you might want to take a look at the book on Amazon called, "The Whole
Soy story", which I have nothing to do with that book.
There are other books about the side effects of soy.

I can only give this book a two star given the misinformation about eating Soy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazed at blood sugar results.
We bought this book back in Feb. 2010. My father has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes twenty years ago. About 4 years ago he got lymphoma, two different types. After going through treatments for the cancer, the diabetes went completely out of control. His fasting blood sugars were 230-250 range. He was on Metformin and Glyburide. Finally his doctor said Insulin would be next, and someone suggested this book. He failed Atkin's. Not sure if it was a compliance issue or if the diabetes was too far gone.
It took three weeks to see any difference in his fasting blood sugars. He took his blood sugar at least four times a day. After three weeks, he tested one morning and his blood sugar, fasting, had finally dropped to 150's. A month later 120's. At that time, his day time blood sugars were 150 to 200.
Three months out, his fasting blood sugars dropped to the 120s. His day time sugars no longer went past 160, 170.
Six months out, his fasting is 95-100. His daytime 120-140. The other day, he had a fasting blood sugar of 70.
He has been off Metformin since the fourth month. His glyburide has been cut to half pill twice a day. His attending is considering cutting that one altogether. When I sit down and review his book, I see a downward trend in the blood sugar, from the third week on. It just slowly came into normal range.
He eats everything that the book allows:
Sweet potatoes, brown rice, beans. Fruit. He makes his own bread with whole wheat flour. He oatmeal everyday. He puts raisins in his bread and eats it toasted with no butter. He did not appear to be over weight when he started but he has lost about 15 pounds.
This diet has really been a life saver. If you are dealing with diabetes, give this an honest chance. Very easy to follow and you will not be hungry.

5-0 out of 5 stars When you're ready to FINALLY get healthy - for good!
I first heard of Dr. Barnard's program through an informational show he did for PBS and I was astounded that something so simple, so easy to follow, could be the answer... but it is! I put my whole family on the program and within three weeks we've all lost a substantial amount of weight (my husband shed 20lbs in the first two weeks!), and we all feel fantastic! This is something that we not only CAN do - we look FORWARD to continuing on this path to good health. Try it, try it, try it!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much has changed for an 8 yr old book to be current
I regret buying this book and I have no one to blame but myself. I have yet to find any reference to the sugar-substitute Splenda and it is just one of the reasons that I found this book quite out of date. Also I found many of the recipes far higher in sodium than my personal tastes would dictate when recipes called for canned ingredients. There are other options in our grocery stores today that give us healthier choices. It's by no means a bad cookbook - just sorely out of date.
I've only had this cookbook one day and I have to say it has inspired me - to write my own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
I really, really wanted to use this book. But the recipes are just not normal, everyday person friendly. The recipes, in my opinion, are more appropriate for the gourmet food lover -- not the burger and fries type person. In fact, there is terminology in this book that I just don't know. What does it mean to "hull" a strawberry? There are foods that I do not know. Too many seafood recipes also for the non-seafood eater--me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a cookbook I would use.
I feel like I just wasted hard-earned money on this book. The majority of the main meal recipes call for yogurt and I'm extremely lactose intolerant, so I can kiss those recipes goodbye. As far as the rest of the recipes go, I think they just sound totally unappetizing and/or are more difficult to spend the time making than they're worth.I'm Italian, been cooking for 45 years and am not a novice cook, so I do know what I'm speaking about. ...
