Accompanied by narratives throughout to enhance the understanding of the text, this reference details factors such as the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the five major symptoms, common complications associated with the disease, risk factors, and preventive measures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Book should be mandatory reading
I'm making sure every one of my family/loved ones reads this book.I'm pretty sure now after reading this book my Dad died of complications brought on by Type II D.Stroke, Cardiomyopathy, CAD, finally, heart failure.Underlying it all was a decades long undiagnosed Metabolic syndrome then Type II D.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
This is an excellent, well written book by a doctor with impeccable credentials in this area. It is a comprehensive analysis of the correlation between the metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a set of conditions which include obesity, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol and blood glucose. Early diagnosis and treatment of this condition can prevent the occurrence of Type 2 diabetes. This book is a detailed explanation of how to recognize the symptoms for this pre-diabetic condition and an up to date listing of what medications and treatments can be used to control it.

Reading this book could add 10 to 20 years to your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone!
I'm a Registered Nurse and found this book to be full of the most useful, easy to understand information about Type 2 Diabetes. It's also a great teaching tool - not just for patients but anyone who may be at risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to prevent Type 2 Diabetes
Dr. Hilkovitz gets right to the point in clear, easy to understand language. The book addresses who is at risk and what the very real benefits are to take action early to identify and prevent Type 2 Diabetes 10 to 15 years before it occurs. It goes well beyond the simple diet and exercise regime and gets very specific about the latest medical treatments and drugs available.I especially like the layout of the book. The use of highlight boxes is very effective. His personal real life examples make the book interesting and relevant.

I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that they may be a candidate for Type 2 Diabetes or may know someone who is.

thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help with my SARD's Patient
This book is very helpful about how to deal with special needs dogs and understanding how they got that way. I have a SARD's dog and am working with the author on a protocol to treat him now. She is so incredibly helpful. She has talked to my vet for me and emailed me so much material about what I can do for him. I also bought Living With Your Blind Dog. Both are very informative in their own way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, well written, focus on most common serious diseases in dogs
Our 10 year old miniature poodle was recently diagnosed with diabetes and Cushing's disease. Although there is a lot of information on the web, we ordered this book to keep handy. It's a good, well written book about diet, and the most common serious diseases in dogs, including the two our poodle has. We found it very useful and not too expensive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
Rather small and outdated for the price. The majority of the information in the book is nothing that you wouldn't find yourself just by searching on the Internet- for free.Sort of a disappointment really.I was so looking forward to receiving this book and then changing our dogs' diets but the diet plan in here is extremely vague.Look elsewhere for info if your dog has Cushings or SARDS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bought the book for my Dad
I bought the book for my dad whose favorite dog was recently diagnosed with diabetes. It didn't sound like his Vet had given him much information beyond the most basic information (give the dog a shot at this time every day). My dad says the book answers many of his questions and provides him with the information he needs to understand the condition and properly care for his dog. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Tasty!
I have tried two recipes from this book and will be trying more soon. What I really love is that these recipes are not too flashy-they don't have a million ingredients and are pretty quick to put together. For a July 4th party, I made the "Kitchen Quarterback Salsa and Bean Dip" and the "Diet Mountain Dew Salad" simultaneously while my six month old was screaming at me.I think that says a LOT about the simplicity/ease of preparation that these recipes entail.

The best part is that some of my guests were the type to gripe about low-fat/diet food and they RAVED about these dishes and asked me for the book info. That says a lot about the taste factor.

I would highly recommend this book for people that want quick diet food that actually TASTES good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "usable" cookbook for the noncooker
I bought this cookbook for my mother to use (father is diabetic and had heart bypass surgery). It has so many great recipes and lets you know what to do in order to make it have less sodium, etc.It has red meat recipes (he can't eat that) but we just substitute fish, chicken, or turkey. It uses ingredients she actually had in the kitchen and would use again (not just for one recipe).I made the "No fat fried chicken" (a baked recipe to taste like fried) and my dad said it was the best chicken he has ever had. These recipes will dress up the same few meats so that one doesn't get tired of the same thing and give up on a new way of life. The recipes are so, so, easy.My mother hates to cook and loves this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tasty & Easy Recipes for the Diabetic

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Management in Diabetes during pregnancy
This comprehensive manual has been a reliable resource for managing Diabetes in Pregnancy.Highlyrecommend for Medical providers, & educators that are involved in patient management, program development and staff training forDiabetes in Pregnancy Programs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Expensive
While the book provided some good information, I was expecting more judging by the title. (I was also surprised at how small the book was given its cost.) Bottom line? There is much more specific and far more up-to-date information available for free on the internet. A quick search under "diabetes mellitus and pregnancy" will provide a wealth of it, including specific (and current) rates of birth defects at what blood sugar levels and which tests should be conducted during which trimester.

I think the problem may be that it's trying to do too much. The introduction states that the book is designed to "present to the clinician a complete package of protocols."Given some of the very basic information, I hope there are no clinicians who don't know some of this stuff.

The first chapter discusses the fact that it's a good idea to talk to women before conception about the importance of good blood sugar control (does anyone not know that?) and lists the doctors one should see and some of the tests that should be conducted. It basicaly suggests a thorough exam for all the diabetic trouble spots--eyes, kidneys, A1c levels, thyroid, etc. All good sense. However, the second chapter is on contraception, which seems unecessary and out of place.Worse, the first chapter boldly states that if the woman has "clinically proven" cardiac disease, she should not only be counseled against pregnancy, but "should be asked to consider permanent sterilization"(!). No discussion about risk factors or degrees of severity--just any cardiac disease equals sterilization. If the book is only geared toward "clinicians," perhaps that's acceptable. But a discussion of birth control, and a list of what kinds of insulin exist and their duration seems geared toward the completely uninitiated. I found it shocking.

A large problem I had was with the graph of birth defect rates, something I was very, very concerned with. It doesn't seem to be labeled accurately. It says it measures number of spontaneous abortions, major malformations and no major malformations in conjunction with HA1c levels in the first trimester. However, above the HA1c levels it says "Mean + SD (standard deviation)." You can't tell what the SD refers to, and it reports some pretty high numbers. I contacted the ADA (publisher) about this since it suggests that an A1c between 7.7 and 9.3 has fewer incidents of major malformation than an A1c below 7.7. The person I corresponded with was very nice, and told me a few times they would get back to me. They finally said I should check with my doctor if I'm pregnant, which did NOT answer the question. I checked the source material listed at the end of the chapter--this graph is based on information from "reference 13," which was an article published in 1979. I found much more current info on my own with a simple internet check.

There was information about the fact that insulin requirements will increase as the pregnancy progresses, but my doctor has a chart that shows you the typical increases. Further, the book Pumping Insulin has a good chapter on pregnancy and what to expect in dosage increases, diet breakdowns and blood sugar goals pre- and post-meal.

Much of the rest of the book seems like common sense, things you could find in almost any book on pregnancy or in some other book designed for the lay person written from the diabetic's point of view rather than the clinician's.

Overall, I wish someone had steered me toward better information. Given the title, I was expecting it to be sort of a "one-stop shop" where I could get all the factual information I would need. Perhaps I expected too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars What you REALLY need to know
This is a book for diabetic women planning or in pregnancy. It is very detailed and some of the language may be difficult for the lay person. However it goes into great detail about diabetes managment and reducing the risks of complications in the pregnancy. You will learn more here than in any doctor's office. If you are not medically inclined, get the book, read it then ask your doctor or nurse to explain questions that the book evokes about your situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Doctors and Nurses!
I am a pregnant diabetic woman with no medical training, and I highly recommend this book to others like me who want some good information on pregnancy and diabetes. It is appropriate for type I, type II, and gestational diabetes.

It has great facts such as a graph of 1st trimester HbA1c's vs. number of congenital malformations and a table with each congenital malformation and the associated factor of increased risk. Those two things right there were worth the price of the book for me.It also serves as a guide for your entire pregnancy from pre-conception through breastfeeding. It explains the tests that should be performed throughout your pregnancy, how your diabetes should be treated during labor and delivery, and how your baby should be treated after he/she is born.

There were a few small downsides to this book.I did not understand about 5% of it, although I was almost always able to get the gist of it.Another 5% was just more information than I needed or wanted. Also, it sometimes gave perfect-world recommendations that didn't seem practical given the real-world limitations of time, money, and the fact that pregnant diabetic women are humans, not machines!

If you want an informational book on pregnancy and diabetes and you aren't scared off by medical terminology, this is the one to get. ... Read more

Product Description
Beat diabetes and lose weight!

Ask any doctor or nutritionist who treats patients with diabetes: the first focus for controlling the disease is a healthy eating plan. But typical diabetic eating plans have been all about what you can't eat and what to do if you fall prey to a craving for foods you shouldn't have.

But now a typical day in the life of a diabetic might start with a smoked salmon-and-dill omelet, continue to a lunch of three-bean chili, salsa and guacamole, and finish with a dinner of grilled shrimp and shaved fennel, topped off by a dessert of chocolate terrine. It's a kind of eating that virtually guarantees not just control of the disease and a satisfying of the appetite, but an emphasis on specific nutrients that actually target diabetes, beating back its potential side effects and maintaining the healthy weight that is key to controlling the disease.

In Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss, Dr. Howard Shapiro uses the same visual method of food comparisons that made his bestselling weight-loss books so popular and easy to use. Now he has teamed with top chef Franklin Becker, a diabetic himself, and together they reveal the secrets to a diet that can actually help you prevent and beat diabetes—without depriving yourself of delicious food. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A beginners guide to portion control
When one of my own family members was diagnosed with diabetes, I began to look for a guide to use in conjunction with the diabetes teaching we received.Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss: The Visual Program to Prevent and Control Diabetes is just that book. This book is a photo guide of portion control. It features real life food and brands we actually use. There are numerous photographs with comparisons to similar foods. It also has sample menus and recopies. The recopies are easy and really tasty, often featuring a diabetes friendly version of an old favorite. What makes this such a valuable tool is the visuals. This book has headed off many an argument about what constitutes a serving. And each photogives the details of the different nutritional values...fats spelled out in pats of butter.Changing the way you eat is an unusually daunting challange......arm yourself with the some of thebest information around.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of Eat This Not That Advice
This diet is based largely on making healthy food choices. It contains lots of "eat this not that" examples. Those examples on full color pages are the majority of the book. It's something that is really stressed in the book and takes the majority of the book up. There are a few recipes included.

The book is written primarily for diabetes caused by obesity. For those it might help because you will lose weight on low cal/low fat diets. Recipes and nutrition info are based on mostly calorie and fat content and not carb count. As a diabetic I cannot eat foods high in carbs even though they are healthy in other aspects because they raise my blood sugar.

It is common for a low fat/low calorie, typically healthy diet to be prescribed but many diabetics have trouble controlling their blood sugar on these because of too many carbs. My doctor prescribed the South Beach Diet for me. It's a good healthy diet that is low carb also.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bernstein's Diabetes Solution is the Gold Standard. IMHO
Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss: The Visual Program to Prevent and Control Diabetes

I would rate this overall as just O.K.As a diabetic, I still believe Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution is the Gold Standard.

BTW, using The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein's Low-Carbohydrate Solution has allowed me to get my blood sugar in the 80 -120 range without meds!

4-0 out of 5 stars Need and Want
Nothing really new, but the basic information is clear and precise and practical. No magic potions or mantras just exercise, and nutrition with a dap of psychological theory.I needed a emotion boost and some ideas and this was just what I needed.
It may be just what you need, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food That You Can Eat
Typically a lot of diabetes diet information are stereotyped. This is an excellent book and stresses the food that you can eat. The proper foods selected to control diabetes are the first line of defense in improving ones' quality of life. Good reading and enjoyable to follow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this book!
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and of course was shocked.I immediately started shopping for books on the subject to educate myself.I saw this book here on Amazon and liked the fact that it covers your first year dealing with diabetes and according to other reviews, used humor a lot.I ordered it and am very pleased with it.It's a great book on helping you deal with everything you are going through your first year.It deals with all the different emotions you will most likely be dealing with and all of the questions you may have such as what the heck is diabetes?I am reading it straight through and not just reading according to the schedule of the month by month chapters.I appreciate that this book does use humor to lighten the moment but does not belittle what you are going through.I just really like how the book is written.I fully recommend this book to anyone who has been newly diagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars great information
When I left my doctors office after being diagnosed I was Stunned to say the least.
This book helped answer questions I had not even thought of, and clarify things said in the meeting.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have
It transforms your problem into plan of actions, which are entirely doable. After reading it, 1) I promptly scheduled appointments to check eyes, skin and feet; 2) never skip metformin again (if I forget about it, I'll take it couple of hours later); 3) excluded such carbs as carrots and peas from my daily intake - I never realized that I used to overdose on these carbs. These days, I'm much better on brocolli slaw. Bottom line, it was a very helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Info for the New Diabetic
Just diagnosed with diabetes. Never really sick a day in my life, am active and don't smoke, drink, or eat fast food. So what the heck am I doing with diabetes?! For me this has been a wake up call to start living a healthier life style. Anyway this has been a very useful first book on diabetes for me. Also recommend Diabetes for Dummies and Cinnamon capsules which have been effective in keeping my sugar down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your First Year With Diabetes
Whether this is your first year with diabetes or your first year to get serious about diabetes, this is the book for you! Each page of this guide offers practical, sensible, understandable explanations of the complicated condition in a lighthearted style you will easily absorb. I learned something new on every page myself, and I've been a Diabetes Educator for 27 years! I wholeheartedly recommend this book for a fresh approach to support individualized goals and successful achievement of optimal health outcomes. Sandy Pieschel RN, BSW, CDE ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the creative and ethnic options!
Some of the diet and diabetes books I've been getting lately are pretty bland and boring with just a few recipes in each category. This book has many options to help us eat healthfully at home, while satisfying some of our eating out cravings. Last night I made the Chicken Vindaloo and Curried Eggplant and Lentils because my husband has been craving Indian food. Tonight I'm making the Thai Basil Chicken. Over 3 dozen soups! I love how it has a Recipe Index in addition to a regular index, and menu suggestions for creating complete meals. Finally a diabetes cookbook that I'm going back to over and over again.

The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because they need to put out an updated version. This was printed in 1993. I bought it used for less than $7 w/shipping. But with Whole Foods and Trader Joe's making whole grain products more available to the average shopper, it would be nice to see whole wheat and other whole grain flours incorporated in the recipes, rather than white flour. And, for example, hulled barley recommended over pearled in a soup recipe (that has plenty of simmer time anyway (to allow for the longer cooking time of the whole grain product)).

Also, in the next edition, they need to standardize their measurements. For example, in one recipe the chicken breast quantity was described as "2 whole skinless and boneless chicken breasts 1/2 pound each, halved" and in another as "1 pound skinless and boneless chicken breasts"- both recipes make 4 servings with the same protein grams in the nutritional info, so I assume both recipes call for 1 pound chicken breasts, but that could be made clearer.

However, for expanding your options beyond the quick, easy, boring or bland, I highly recommend the Joslin Diabetes Gourmet Cookbook

5-0 out of 5 stars quick comment
I have not reviewed other cookbooks for diabetics as a caveat. My purpose in reviewing this book was to see if it would be suitable for a friend who is a gourmet cook and reluctant to be relegated to boring food 'just forthe sake of her diabetic care'. There are a wide variety of excitinggourmet recipes sure to please the palate. Each recipe also containscomplete nutrition information with which to fit these meals into theJoslin exchange program. I recommend the book to every diabetic wishing toput some pzazz into their meal plan. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bible??The book is less then a inch thick!
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!!The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!!Try Prevention The Sugar Solution.I am returning the "bible".What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips.I've tried some of the recipes and they are good.I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Deliver What It Promises
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.
I was particularly interested in the SHOPPING promise because I find that to be the most difficult part of managing my diet. Other books didn't have anything helpful, and despite its promise, this book doesn't either. One has to read through every single recipe, write down the ingredients of what you want to make, and then go out and get it. Just like every other book. So tell me: how does this help with "shopping"? I expected lists of basic staples in a diabetic's diet. There should be lists of "must-haves" for your pantry. This book lies about what it contains, and is sadly lacking in what it needs.
An expensive mistake, don't buy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL DIABETICS
A great book!! It's core message: IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THESE FIVE CRITICAL ISSUES, THERE IS NO REASON YOU CANNOT LIVE A LONG, HEALTY AND HAPPY LIFE. It is not Diabetes that leads to complications and a short life, but the mismanagement of these five critical numbers. Spells out EVERYTHING you need to know about these five issues.Everything is super clear and well laid out.Gives great game plans for management, taking control of your own condition and issues, how to make the most of doctor visits.Debunks common myths about Diabetes and unveils little known truths.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading!!
This Book is wonderful especially for the newly diagnosed Diabetic, it is very informative and helpful.I learned a great deal. I would suggest this book to be a part of required reading for all diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read this book
I wish I could put a copy of Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Life in every diabetes clinic. Better yet, in the hands of every person with type 2 diabetes.

Richard Jackson, MD and Amy Tenderich provide a realistic guide to diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, with this book. The focus is on the results of the five tests that determine diabetes health (A1C, blood pressure, lipids, microalbumin, and eye exam) and the importance of physical activity rather than providing another lecture about weight loss and forbidden foods. Countering fears about insulin is another important aspect of this book. If someone needs insulin to keep good results coming on the five key tests, they should not fear it - they should embrace it as a way to curb future complications.

I might not be able to provide a copy to every person with type 2 diabetes...or even every diabetes clinic, but I can lend my copy to those interested in learning more about their own or their loved one's condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars 'Almost' All You Need To Know About Diabetes
Lose 30 pounds. Get your blood pressure down. Lower your LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and get that HDL cholesterol up. Keep an eye on your blood sugar and have it checked often.

Does any of this sound familiar? Sure it does and you may have even heard it from your own doctor regarding your flailing health because of you are overweight or obese. It's the dreaded lecture that comes from physicians when they see certain health indicators come back as irregular.

But what if what you are dealing with is something even more life-threatening than just a bout with obesity, hypertension, or a poor lipid profile? What if it's one of the most dreaded of all diseases that makes you feel like your world has come to an official end? That's exactly what happens to some people when they are told they have been diagnosed with diabetes.

What did I do to cause this? How can something like this happen to me? Will I ever live a "normal" life again or am I destined for a life of painful insulin injections, expensive prescription medications, and endless doctor visits for the rest of my life?

These thoughts are not only very real to people who are told they have diabetes, but it can paralyze them even when they otherwise have their life under complete control. Diabetes has quite literally turned the life of millions of people upside down and leaves them with very little hope or help. Where can people turn when they are faced with such despair about this complex disease they have?

Whether you are Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic, then you have undoubtedly been given some all-too-familiar generic advice about handling your diabetes (like I illustrated at the beginning of this review) which is all meant to help you I am sure. Unfortunately, though, this kind of one-size-fits-all approach to diabetes is not only shortsighted, but incredibly ineffective.

That's where the mostly informative new book from Harvard medical professor and Joslin Diabetes Center investigator Dr. Richard Jackson as well as saucy and always on point professional journalist, blogger, and diabetes sufferer Amy Tenderich comes into play. It's called Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master To Enjoy A Long And Healthy Life (Marlowe Diabetes Library) and will quickly become your handy reference resource guide for almost everything you ever wanted to know about diabetes.

I say "almost" for a reason which I will explain in a moment.

First, the good parts of this book. It is very well put together in an enjoyable format mixing a healthy dose of diabetes facts alongside some hands-on practical advice about how to best implement the proper lifestyle changes that need to take place for optimal diabetes management. While this can be a rather drab and boring topic to discuss, Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do a yeoman's job of keeping it fun and engaging.

And I really like the fact that the authors strongly urge people living with diabetes to implement permanent lifestyle changes. At the same time, they push the positive message that diabetics don't necessarily need to attempt to make multiple changes all at once, but instead slowly begin to work them into their individual routine incrementally. I agree with this bit-by-bit strategy because it is the best way to make the changes take hold and become a permanent habit whether it is with weight loss, diabetes, or anything else. Breaking out of those old habits takes time.

Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes hits the ground running right away in the first six chapters explaining why you need to be concerned about your health when you have diabetes and points to the five tests that every single diabetic absolutely must have checked regularly if they are going to lick this disease by learning to manage it well.

What are these five tests? Very simply put, it's the following:

1. Your A1C
2. Your blood pressure
3. Your lipid profile (cholesterol)
4. Your microalbumin (What?! Don't worry, they explain!)
5. Your eye exam

While Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do not explicitly recommend people who are not diabetic to have these tests conducted, I think it is an extremely good idea considering there are tens of millions more pre-diabetics walking around and have no idea they are either already or becoming insulin resistant. Taking preventative action now would likely slow down the expected diabetes boom coming over the next few decades.

You can certainly appreciate the "been there, done that" feel of this book which does a fabulous job of removing the mystery and awe out of diabetes for good. Whether you have just been diagnosed with diabetes or even if you are a decades-long veteran living with the disease, there is plenty of useful statistics and data to keep you occupied for hours as you learn all the ins and outs of diabetes.

But I have one pretty major concern about the book that makes me say it is "almost" a comprehensive look at the subject of diabetes. While there is plenty of discussion about carbohydrates and how controlling your intake of them whether they are in the form of sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, or otherwise in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes, the lack of a real sense of urgency about trying to keep them limited as a means for managing diabetes is not emphasized heavily enough and given the significance it deserves. All the latest research indicates that reducing carb intake can bring about permanent control of diabetes and you just don't hear this message stated explicitly in this book.

For a book like this about diabetes releasing in the year 2007, how can you totally ignore the many years of clinical studies (like this one) that have been conducted by valient researchers like Dr. Eric Westman from Duke University and Dr. Mary C. Vernon from the University of Kansas and the co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution? What about Dr. Steve Phinney or Dr. Jay Wortman? And let's not forget Dr. Mary Gannon and Dr. Frank Nuttall, too! I could easily continue on with many more names, but these are enough to get you started.

Not only have these amazing researchers shown the vital statistics for their diabetic patients become normalized, but many of them were able to come completely off of all their prescription medicines for good. GASP! How can this be? You'd never know this was possible if you only read this book because there was no mention of ending diabetes drug use in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes--NONE! Just the strong "now take your medicines regularly along with a low-fat diet" message that diabetics have had to suffer through long enough.

Where was the promotion of this major "cure" for diabetes which was highlighted nationally by Adam Campbell in Men's Health magazine in November 2006 found within the pages of this diabetes book, hmmm? The glaring absence of this cutting edge information about diabetes is like talking to someone about how to drive a car that doesn't have a steering wheel. Sure, you may get somewhere, but not necessarily where you want to go.

Furthermore, there was nary a single mention of the most famous diabetes expert who has implored a low-carb solution to his Type 1 diabetes for decades--the amazing Dr. Richard Bernstein! This man has done more to add quality of life and even saved the lives of millions of diabetics through his bestselling books and personal practice. However, if you read Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes it's as if Dr. Bernstein and his common sense strategies for tackling diabetes don't even exist. Shame on them for this grave omission!

To be honest, it was quite scary reading over and over again in this supposedly all-encompassing book on the topic of diabetes that people with this disease need to consume as much as 60 percent carbohydrates daily, including regular servings of sugar if they want it "in moderation!" Say what?! ARGH!

Are they trying to make these people get sicker and sicker?! What kind of irresponsible advice like this is being given to diabetics?! Yikeseroo! How about just giving them a little arsenic "in moderation" while you're at it, too? Sheeez!

Yet, at the same time, the authors emphasize the critical nature of carbohydrate reduction in the management of diabetes. So which is it? I understand we are all different with a variety of factors that will work for the individual person, but come on! I'm a big believer in people finding what works for them in weight loss and health management at my blog, but I see no downside for diabetics who want to control their disease naturally through diet by livin` la vida low-carb.

What will happen if diabetics decide to take the low-carb pathway to reversing the effects of their disease is they will get better than they've ever been before, seeing their A1C drop into "normal" range and staying there, lower their blood pressure, significantly drop their triglycerides, raise their HDL cholesterol levels, and ward off many of the inevitable future health issues due to their diabetes. Not a bad deal if you ask me!

Of course, the lack of any information about the low-carb nutritional approach to combat diabetes in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes may have more to do with the American Diabetes Association and their ill-advised recommendations than anything else. It is quite clear that Dr. Jackson and Tenderich relied heavily on their skewed advice for diabetics.

You see the unmistakable fingerprints of their needless warnings about lowering LDL cholesterol (with even MORE medications such as statins--EEEK!), avoiding saturated fat, lowering salt intake, and controlling fat, calories, and portion sizes in page after page of this book. It really was more than a little nauseating to read all of this information while "low-carb" was nowhere to be found. I can't tell you how incredibly disappointing this was to me because diabetics who read this book will be left in the dark about what very well could be the solution to their disease.

While I certainly can appreciate what Dr. Richard Jackson and Amy Tenderich have done with their book Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes to help educate people with this disease get the basic information they may be looking for, it is the blatant omission of critical information about low-carb as a viable treatment option for diabetes that has me gravely concerned.

And if you are diabetic, you deserve to be armed with all the facts so you really can "outlive your diabetes." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there to address the psychosocial impact of diabetes
Diabetes is not only a condition you treat with insulin, oral meds, diet and/or exercise. Diabetes, as a chronic condition, takes an important toll over our emotions: it's simply hard to deal with something that won't go away ever no matter what... you can control it but you can't remove it (not yet, at least).

Dr. Polonsky has been studying this for many years and is one of the world's most respected authorities in the psychosocial and behavioral issues in diabetes, currently heading the nonprofit Behavioral Diabetes Institute. He has poured a lot of his knowledge into this title to help all of us with diabetes (and those around us) better cope with those times when we feel diabetes is just too much to cope with.

He has you explore the barriers that most affect you and, through a worksheet very cleverly titled "What's Driving you Crazy About Diabetes?" he helps you guide how you read the rest of the book, by focusing on the matters that you clearly need more help with. Each chapter from that point on contains a load of strategies to overcome the specific barrier dealt within it.

If diabetes burnout is kicking you hard or if you can merely feel it coming, don't wait and help yourself by reading this great title.

3-0 out of 5 stars took a little long
The book took a little long to get delivered but it is in great shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've found
After six years of managing the health aspects of diabetes well, I never could deal with the emotional aspects. Every day was like a spelling test I flunked even though I knew the words. This book taught me about accepting 'less than perfect' blood glucose numbers. Now maybe I can relax and stop beating myself up with guilt and worry, something that also makes things worse. This book has wonderful questionaires and evaluations that really help narrow down the reader's needs then offers concrete steps to help overcome whatever aspect is a problem in diabetes care. I will recommend this book to my friends who ask about diatetes.
