5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this book!
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and of course was shocked.I immediately started shopping for books on the subject to educate myself.I saw this book here on Amazon and liked the fact that it covers your first year dealing with diabetes and according to other reviews, used humor a lot.I ordered it and am very pleased with it.It's a great book on helping you deal with everything you are going through your first year.It deals with all the different emotions you will most likely be dealing with and all of the questions you may have such as what the heck is diabetes?I am reading it straight through and not just reading according to the schedule of the month by month chapters.I appreciate that this book does use humor to lighten the moment but does not belittle what you are going through.I just really like how the book is written.I fully recommend this book to anyone who has been newly diagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars great information
When I left my doctors office after being diagnosed I was Stunned to say the least.
This book helped answer questions I had not even thought of, and clarify things said in the meeting.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have
It transforms your problem into plan of actions, which are entirely doable. After reading it, 1) I promptly scheduled appointments to check eyes, skin and feet; 2) never skip metformin again (if I forget about it, I'll take it couple of hours later); 3) excluded such carbs as carrots and peas from my daily intake - I never realized that I used to overdose on these carbs. These days, I'm much better on brocolli slaw. Bottom line, it was a very helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Info for the New Diabetic
Just diagnosed with diabetes. Never really sick a day in my life, am active and don't smoke, drink, or eat fast food. So what the heck am I doing with diabetes?! For me this has been a wake up call to start living a healthier life style. Anyway this has been a very useful first book on diabetes for me. Also recommend Diabetes for Dummies and Cinnamon capsules which have been effective in keeping my sugar down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your First Year With Diabetes
Whether this is your first year with diabetes or your first year to get serious about diabetes, this is the book for you! Each page of this guide offers practical, sensible, understandable explanations of the complicated condition in a lighthearted style you will easily absorb. I learned something new on every page myself, and I've been a Diabetes Educator for 27 years! I wholeheartedly recommend this book for a fresh approach to support individualized goals and successful achievement of optimal health outcomes. Sandy Pieschel RN, BSW, CDE ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great read for diabetics
this is a good book for those who are confused about their diabetes. My husband has had diabetes type 2, for five years now and this book helped us settle the myths. We still continue to learn from this horrible disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome tool
I am so relieved that someone can answer almost all of the questions I have concerning diabetes.I know that my education concerning diabetes will be an ongoing quest and this book does reinforce that. The book also addresses some misconceptions I had.

4-0 out of 5 stars Information to benefit the concerned
This book provides information in a "non-threatening" manner for a disease that has already alarmed the patient.Understanding the disease, how it affects your life & what personal response can make a difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Liberate yourself from misconceptions
Riva's second book, "50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life: And the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It", is many things. On one hand I wish I could whip it out, flip it to the myth (and the truth), and shove it the face of someone perpetuating some diabetes related untruth (a.k.a. myth). On the other hand, there is SO MUCH great stuff in here for all of us living with diabetes! This is a book that you can read right through, or pick at it myth by myth.

I also love the sections of the book where Riva presents information from real people living with diabetes and what they have to say about the myth.It provides a taste of real world diabetes, which is important to see as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars 50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life: And the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Diet New Fiber-Full
Great book! Tasty and easy receipes for all your family. I was looking for a good cook book for a diabetic and here it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
I decided, on my own, to begin a diabetes-type diet --- my blood glucose count was a bit high (for the first time) at my last physical exam. So --- rather than wait, I did some research and changed my eating habits. Although I have, so far, had no professional guidance, I find this book easy to follow --- the diet explanations are clear and the recipes easy--- the results delicious. One of the best purchases I have made.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR EVERYONE, SAVED OUR LIVES!
This book is awesome! My dad has diabetes and this book really changed our lives. The start off meal plan is easy and everything is delicious! My mother, my husband and I also ate our meals straight out of this book with my dad and we all lost weight and felt great. Eating better really makes a difference in all aspects. I lost 25 pounds right away and my dad lost even more and his diabetes is under control. MY TIP:Don't consider it a diet, because it doesn't feel like one! It's just eating better to feel better and be better! Making healthier choices is easy for all of us now. I'm glad we decided to do this for my dad because it ended up helping all of us!

3-0 out of 5 stars a little disappointed
The book was new as stated but I am a little disappointed in the contents, the diet is unrealistic to most people in my opinion, at least for my husband. The information in the beginning of the bookwould be useful to someone new to this medical problem..

4-0 out of 5 stars Diet books
The book was well received by the recipient. As a nurse practitioner, I often deal with complex needs in nutrition. Many times you attempt to meet the health care needs of the patient while also making accommodation for the family of the patient. More dietary help is often needed. This item is helpful.

I bought it because i thought all the recipes would be 4 ingredients or less.there are way too many recipes with way more than 4 ingredients.if i had seen that, i would not have bought it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy cooking
I thought this book would work for a friend who is trying to learn to eat better but the ingredient list on much of the recipes isn't something he would use or has.Just good food recipes would have been better.

I was very displeased with this book. It called for eating sugar and starches not healthy for diabetics. Makes no common sense!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read... Not Just For Diabetics!!!
What a great book!We all should thank Mr. McCulley for sharing his experiences and what he learned as a result of his life-threatening bout with diabetes. As an engineer, I appreciate the way the author attacked the problem and fundamentally broke the disease down to it's basic elements. With this approach, cause and effect can easily be understood and proper solutions identified to address the problem. The results for Mr. McCulley were astonishing, and I'm sure mystified many doctors and pharmacists along the way.The way Mr. McCulley explained his concepts was outstanding and made the book easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cure of Dibetes - Unheard Of
What can anyone say? There is a cure. My son was diagnosed a little over a year ago and we have maintained his blood sugar in just a few days. I was one to worry about getting insulin for my son if there was an emergency. Now I know there are alternative solutions. Break away from the control freak pharmaceutical & food industries and go with what's euphoric. Read this...... You will feel a natural buzz if you incorporate it yourself.

this book purchase was a hunch but several friends have looked into it and all have been impressed.I would buy it again. Best wishes

3-0 out of 5 stars Ph Miracle in Practice
I bought this book for my daughter sake. She is almost 10 yrs old, and was diagnosed with type I Diabetes 1.5 ago. I looked into alternative medicine and found Dr. Young book.
I read it,and read it again and again!I was trying to envision how I will be able to make it happened...

We are family with 5 children, and it does mean that I would have to cook something else for the rest of the family till we get comfortable with this diet.

First thing I tried was AvoRado Kid Super GreenShake.I couldn't drink it!I realized that my daughter not going to like it either.I offered it for my husband to try.It took him 30 min. to drink ½ cup of it,while making faces and grunting. After that he ran to refrigerator for a cup of fruit juice .

This week me and my husband decided that we surely will start the diet, and week later introduce our daughter to it.

First day, after drinking green drink in the morning, I had Creamy or Crunchy Broccoli Soup.It is basically a bunch of different vegetables cooked in water or broth with very little seasoning to it.It wasn't too bad.But after bowl of it, I couldn't imagine having another one.Even week later...
Well, we couldn't continue past two days of trying...

I got impression that Shelley Young doesn't spends much time creating this recipes.Idea is that if you put together something alkaline, it is goodfor you. Taste of it doesn't matter. I may research Mediterraneancuisine for soups recipes, or just any other vegetable soup recipes...

Some of the ingredients you will have to order on-line.They are hard to find even at health food stores.

Finding and buying all the supplements is another problem.Dr. Young sells all recommended supplements on his web site, but it is very expensive, although different ones are combined, so it is minimizes quantity of pills you will be taken. If you buy everything he recommends, you'll spend over $500 dollars per person.

But I am still not giving up!I do have some of the supplements, I did buy green powder at local health food store ("Green Vibrance"), and we did buy Ph drops.

I am determined to try most of the recipes in this book, since I already invested so much time in this, and money. I cannot just give up. I need to continue for my daughter sake.

Just came to find a good book of alkaline recipes. Oh, my!Shelly Young bookBack to the House of Health: Rejuvenating Recipes to Alkalize and Energize for Life new $99.00, used $40.00!

Are they after money, or what??

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK
I absolutely love this book. Not only are the recipes great, they are made with everyday basic ingredients and taste great.Every one I've tried is a new "favorite" of mine.

It keeps you from getting bored from eating the same things all the time and each recipe shows the nutritional value. This is especially helpful when your trying hard to get your sugar levels evened out.

Incorporating these recipes along with working out, I've finally started to lose weight.HIGHLY RECOMMEND usage of this book as a "tool" to help with Diabetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookbooks should have pictures
I honestly have not used this cookbook since I ordered it.There is just something unappealing about a cookbook without pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook
This is a great cookbook. Most of the recipes use items you probably already have on hand. Besides showing the number of servings, it also tells you how much a serving is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diet for a New Boyfriend
Well, he is definitely diabetic, and enthusiastic about the recipes here. However, actually getting him to eat is the issue.

The cookbook is great. And a godsend for those of us who want to watch what we eat before we become diabetic due to family history or old age. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars diabetic snacks
Tried a chicken nugget receipe and my picky children loved it.So we need to try other receipes for a child recently diagnoised with Diabetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kids' cookbook marginally appealing
Most of the receipes in this book I really don't think my kids will enjoy. They are not big vegetable fans and this has a lot of veggie-oriented dishes.I was hoping for more creative ideas, more low-carb snacks on the sweet side. Also, it's not a visually appealing cookbook.I decided to keep it, though, as it does have some receipes I can use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snacks for Everyone, Not Just Diabetics
Great snack, breakfast, lunch, and dessert recipes all kids are sure to love!An easy and fun way to try new foods, too.Every recipe is made from a short list of ingredients and are quick to make for anyone short on time.I can't wait to eat everything in this book!My kids will be so happy eating, they won't notice they're eating healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I am using this cookbook to give to families that have children with diabetes.I chose this cookbook because the recipes are not long and involved and do not use specialty ingredients. The recipes are short, nutritious and each is followed by nutritional data.It makes it very easy for the children to count their carbs! 3-0 out of 5 stars All Natural and Tastey
All Natural and Tastey.I simply make a list of the ingrediences that I need for the recepie that I will be preparing, head to my local farmer's market, and then return home and cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan
I'm a fan of this cookbook author. I have her newest book, but decided to try this one too since I love her other book so much. It is definitely healthy, but it's as tasty or tastier than I expected it to be since the recipes are so good for you. All the recipes that I have tried are pretty easy and fast, but the end result makes the dishes look impressive. I have diabetes in my family so this helps me get a headstart on preventing it, hopefully. Another winner of a cookbook!

2-0 out of 5 stars Carb-heavy recipes not appropriate for modern diabetes care
Despite the positive reviews already posted, I cannot whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone with diabetes. While it does follow the current guidelines of the ADA, I would challenge any diabetics to see how their blood glucose responds to a Mango Lassi (p.272, 27g carbs) or to a serving of Roasted Garlic Mashed Baby Creamer Potatoes (p. 254, 20g carbs). At least Ms. Newgent includes a "Fresh Fact" on the page to say that "Potatoes can raise your blood glucose level quickly, so keep an eye on your serving size." Good luck with that...

There are some worthwhile recipes in the book (e.g. Party Peanut Chicken Satay, p. 88, 5g carbs), and at least she lists the carb content so that the carb-aware diabetic can make his/her own decisions about what to eat. Fortunately, there are a great number of cookbooks for the carb-conscious diabetic; I would start with Richard Bernstein's "The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein's Low-Carbohydrate Solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy meals and good for you
This is a great book for those dealing with diabetes. The recipes are simple and easy. There are many naturally gluten-free recipes and many that don't call for soy. (I am allergic to soy, dairy & gluten and my mother has diabetes). Tonight I made the Pepper Quinoa Salad with Basil. It was very good and quick to prepare. In the dessert section there are simple recipes such as Balsamic Strawberries and Grilled Figs. All in all, this is a great book. Thanks to Jackie Newgent for putting together this fantastic resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty food, easy recipes -- what's not to like?
I am originally from Louisiana, and French, Cajun, and Italian dishes (the more complicated and richer, the better) are second nature to me, but at 56 I was unexpectedly diagnosed with Type II diabetes. By inclination, I am one of those persons who doesn't care how "good" something is for me -- if it doesn't taste good, I'm not going to eat it! And I despise the "taste" of artificial sweeteners, and don't believe they do my body any good either.

Well, after having this book a week, I've discovered that the author seems to have an excellent set of priorities:(1) Food should look and taste good; (2) it shouldn't take forever to prepare; (3) it should follow sound thinking for helping you get your diabetes under control.

Although I consider myself an innovative cook, I would never have thought of marinating fresh sliced strawberries in balsamic vinegar. Delicious! Or how about a breakfast patty made from chopped granny smith apples and chicken breasts?

In short, if you have diabetes or cook for someone suffering from it, I highly recommend this book. If you are short of time, and just want to eat healthier, this simple book is very enjoyable and creative! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 30 Day Diabetes Miracle Cookbook
This is a wonderful cookbook for anyone, diabetic or not!I sat down and read it cover to cover and was amazed.I have tried several recipes and have many more to try.It introduced me to products I knew nothing about. You should try it, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book is great! Most of the recipes are very simple to make and most of the ingredients easy to find at Walmart or Albertson's. I am truly impressed. The way of counting carbs is so simple and easy to follow. It really doesn't seem like you're giving up a lot of things for eating only salads. This is a way of eating that is realistic and very tasty. All the meals are plant based, so no meat, fish, eggs or diary on these recipes. But I really don't feel deprived of anything. A relative on mine has gotten their glucose levels within normal limits in 2 weeks only. I think it's a great book for eating healthy whether you have diabetes or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing!
This book has changed my life! When I found out I was diabetic (Type II), I panicked. In fact, I was so scared I hardly ate anything for two days until I saw my doctor again. Thankfully, someone had sent a copy of this book to the network I work at for review. After they had reviewed it, they put it on my desk (still don't know who that was, but I'm so grateful)!

I read it all in one sitting. It's full of the best information, and stays away from all the crazy things that even sometimes doctors tell you (when they don't know much about the disease). I've been able to lose 40 lbs, and stay off any medications besides high blood pressure meds for a whole year. I'm working on losing the rest of the weight, and I feel better than I have in years.

It's simple, but in-depth. And written in a way people like me can understand. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! Now I give a copy of the 30-day Diabetes Miracle book and cookbook to each of my friends who are diagnosed with this disease. I just turned 50, and believe me, there are a lot of us who are finding out we're diabetics. Thank God it's not a death sentence if we do something about it!

BUY THIS BOOK. I can't urge you more strongly. It can make a difference! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It really seems to work
I recently ordered this cookbook for my husband who has early-onset diabetes. His bloodsugar slowly started to rise. Then we got this book and my husband started to cook, going strictly by this book. (I like it that he is cooking now too, I always had to do it before and I was really getting tired of cooking after 46 years) He started a little over 2 weeks ago and his bloodsugar went from in the 140s down to 113 and 110, he measures it once a week. It never was that low before! I hope he will keep on using it. Now he even wants to bake a cake, he has never baked a cake in his life, never even wanted to eat much cake, that's the opposite of me. I eat that way now too even though I don't have it. I hope to loose some weight from it. It doesn't taste the greatest but it's not too bad. I can see that it could reverse diabetes, he just has to stay with it.
Two days later : Well the cake did not turn out very good, it was made with 1/3 c whole wheat flour and 1 tablespoon baking powder !! That can't be, has to be a mistake. He also used salt- substitute instead of salt, for the dough, this time it should have been the real salt. I think he doesn't want to bake anymore cakes. It was the apple cake in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy recepies
this book is easy to follow and I was able to get the sugar substitute at the local health food store.
color pictures of the completed food would be nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reversing Diabetes
I found out about this marvelous book by watching a video on youtube.com.

course quite right. The book is very well documented with many studies
and practical sense recipes, etc.,.
I am very happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious and Practical

Everyone in your family will love the food. This book is the practical companion to Reversing Diabetes, also by Julian Whitaker, M.D. -- an excellent educational book that gives you the WHY behind this approach to healthy food prep to support health (especially for diabetics).

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing
This bulky, 726-page paperback is written for people who eat almost entirely prepackaged, name brand foods, not for people who cook or prepare anything fresh or from scratch. It contains the nutritional content of thousands of packaged or fast food restaurant items, ironically information that is nearly always readily available on the package or in the restaurant and totally unnecessary in a separate publication. The nine-page index is very skimpy and idiosyncratically organized, i.e., no rationale for what is included or left out, and only a very small number of the items covered in the book are listed. Items are not presented in a straightforward alphabetical manner, and there is no clear organizing scheme for the entries; so, the lack of a thorough index is problematic and annoying. Attempting to find anything is very time-consuming and frustrating. A brief, simple list of the nutritional characteristics of basic food ingredients that one could easily carry in a purse or pocket would have been far more helpful (and at a fraction of the cost) to people who need this sort of dietary information. ...
