Legal Dictionary?
I have a hardbound Black's but got this one to carry with me to class at law school.My advice is to get Black's paperback.I am very disappointed by the frequency with which I have to go to Black's after finding that the Collin dictionary does not have the term I need to find.It has usual terms like orphan, disrespect, and kill, but does not have many terms you'd think you'd find in a legal dictionary.Today it was "assumpsit".Who knows what it will be tomorrow.

Clearly laid out , root based dictionary. Good explanatory extracts from the Koran which have helped me to understand the choce of wording of several of the modern translations and the various shades of meaning contained in the roots.

If you want to learn to read the Koran AND actually understand it from the original arabic, then getthis book now! ( together with say Dr Surty's 'Quranic Arabic' or the MELS course 'Access to Quranic Arabic'with CD's, orsimilar books )

Focused on translations, not a study guide
It was my own error in assuming that this book might serve as a study guide.It is an elegant easy to read dictionary and glossary, but the organization is based on the Arabic and the original depiction of the Arabic word, followed by the English explanations, which appear to be superb.Bottom line: buy this only if you are reading the Koran in Arabic, and need a place to go from Arabic to English with fullsome explanations.

Excellent for Students of Classical Arabic
An excellent resource for those interested in translating passages from the Koran. To my knowledge the meaning of every Koranic word is found here. Using Penrice's work is certainly more convenient than going through Hans Wehr, which does not always provide the classical meaning of words. Lane's Lexicon is obviously a better source, but since it is multivolumed, it is both inconvenient to carry around and quite expensive.
