Product Description

This highly practical book focuses on the teaching and learning of students with dyslexia in the context of the mainstream secondary curriculum, and provides practical guidance for school managers and subject teachers by highlighting the barriers to learning experienced by dyslexic learners in today's curriculum.

Full of advice for removing – or minimising – these barriers, this book is packed full of strategies for supporting learning and raising the attainment of students with dyslexia. Teachers of students aged 11 - 19 will find valuable information on:

• how dyslexia affects dyslexic learners’ access to and progress in the subject curriculum

• how secondary teachers can identify possible barriers to learning in their subject delivery

• the development and provision of appropriate support strategies for meeting the needs of dyslexic students

• good practice in the identification and assessment of dyslexia that may be masked by high ability or divergent behaviour.

The use of case studies helpfully highlights the impact of dyslexia on students as they transfer to secondary school. They illustrate how and why this condition may be mistaken for behavioural - or other - difficulties, consider whole-school issues and relate throughout the book to a practical framework of proven support strategies.

Product Description
This book explains why a dyslexic person often underachieves and shows that if the underlying problems are identified, adjustments in teaching and learning methods can make all the difference. Specialist teachers and parents, who often feel frustrated in their attempts to translate educational psychologists' suggestions into action, will discover practical ways to help with schoolwork. Examples are taken from the current curriculum and used to show how to plan an essay, learn vocabulary and read to remember so that the student can use the method to succeed in the short term through good marks and in the long term by generalizing from their own success. Focusing as it does on the way we learn, Dyslexia in Secondary School will interest teachers and all students, not just those with specific learning difficulties. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for ADD teens and their families
This book takes a very down to earth look at life as and with an ADD teen.It starts with an easy diagnostic test to see if your child is likely to be ADD in case you're just wondering about it - which you are since you're reading this. The book is written in a way that might even be engaging enough for your teen to actually read!At the very least, if you read it (it takes about 45 minutes to read cover to cover), you'll be less frustrated by the challenges of guiding your child... which is worth every penny this book will cost you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that much Information
I was looking for a book how to deal with teachers that are uneducated about ADD, my son has it and they just want to classify him as mentally retarted. I need more info.
This book is more for the child than a parent

5-0 out of 5 stars Teachers! Take note!
For its format alone, this is a must-buy for teachers and the administrators who work with them!As a middle school AP, I've visited far too many classrooms where teachers try to keep students' attention nailed to dreary handwritten overheads in black marker no less. Yawn.Every page of this book demonstrates what good overheads should look like (minus the color I'd like to see)while the text explains WHY this is imperative for ADHD students.GET IT!I love it. I ordered two more for my school.

3-0 out of 5 stars I liked how the number was in the title
When I saw this book, I liked that there was a number in the title and the @ thing too.But when I was reading it, most of the words weren't numbers. Some of the pages were pictures and I liked those ones the best.I think that if you wanted this book, you should get it.As someone who had a hard time in high school, making friends etc., I found this was a good way to think back on it all.I'm not sad anymore because of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for me as a high schooler with ADD
I recently read Help for ADD at High School by Kathleen Nadeau. There were many pieces of advice that were new to me and other things that my parents and tutors had taught me before. The advice that I had heardbefore, I have used during my years in high school. These simple tips arehow I survived and passed every single one of my classes.I could tellthat when Dr. Nadeau wrote this book, she understood the people who wouldbe reading it.Usually when I read information books, I get bored anddistracted easily. This probably has alot to do with my ADD.Dr. Nadeauremembered that the reader of this book, like myself, probably has ADD.Inwriting the book, she made a special effort to make sure I didn't looseinterest. The content of the book helps students to understand theirobstacles and teaches them how to overcome them.I would recomend thisbook to any high schooler who has ADD, it will truly help you through yourdifficulties. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars On target!

5-0 out of 5 stars LD Students CAN Help Themselves in School
Kids with learning disabilities often feel like failures in school. Their past experiences tell them that they are helpless to find ways to compete and succeed in the classroom. This book gives many practical, helpful suggestions that can turn a student who feels like a loser into a winner! The best thing an LD student can do is become his or her own best advocate. The ideas in this book make that possible. It is easy to read (about a third grade reading level) and organized clearly. Some of the chapters are titled: You CAN Get Organized, You CAN Learn in Different Ways, You CAN Handle Testing, You CAN Get Along with Others, etc. This emphasis on "you CAN" is just what people with learning disabilities need! The authors also include lists of suggestions for becoming a better reader, speller, more organized, etc. If you know someone with a learning disability, do that person and yourself a favor and get this book. Read it together, if possible. Rhoda Cummings and Gary Fisher have written several books about what they call Learning Differences (LD), and this is one of the best! ... Read more

Mather and Goldstein's book is a wonderful find for parents whose child is having a reading, writing, behavioral, or school problem. They simplify an often frustrating and confusing situation by asking ten clear and simplequestions which are then used to identify what to do.We found thespecific recommendations of how and what to do very useful.Chapter8&9 had very concrete and straightforward "language" things to do thatmade us feel like we were not just spinning our wheels anymore. This bookwas recommended by our elementary school after our son was tested.I wouldrecommend this book for people as they begin testing to help explain whatis going on and what they can and must do.Thanks Nancy & Sam forclarifying the process and making it easier to be an advocate for my child.
