Product Description

The "winds of change" are blowing and an alternative model for providing educational assistance to students in need is being recognized. This model, commonly referred to as Response to Intervention (RTI), could be good news for you and your child. The focus of this book is how RTI facilitates parents and educators meeting the educational needs of children. The major areas of contention surrounding IQ testing, achievement testing, and the discrepancy model are shared in an easily understandable format, while data and case studies are provided to show that RTI is a better way to meet the needs of children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to RTI
I purchased this book to read about Response To Intervention as our school goes through the process of setting up this type of methodology. The book presents RTI in a very concrete, easy to understand format. Methodology was presented, yet specific materials and processes was not covered in depth. The author's style of writing is comfortable, not intimidating.I have seen Tom Jenkins present, and his book reflects his easy-going, quick-witted style. This book would be a good introduction to RTI for those that are not at all familiar with the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book every parent should read
Pastors are often the first to hear about a variety of family issues.Over the years a number of families have shared their concerns over a son or daughter who is struggling in school. And when the problem is the system itself, it's hard to know where to turn for assistance and direction.

Dr. Jenkins offers insight and hope to parents in such circumstances. He explains how the systemn works and doesn't work for kids who are not performing well in school. And he offers families another model for seeking help.

I found the book to be extrememly helpful and encouraging. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guiding teens with learning disabilities
Excellent source for parents of teens transitioning into adulthood and independence. Great tips for school meetings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any educator in charge of these special needs students
Learning Disabilities do not have to be a giant neon sign blinking "I can't" over ones head - they can be overcome just like any other disability. "Guiding Teens with Learning Disabilities: Navigating the Transition from High School to Adulthood" is a comprehensive guide for guidance counselors and others responsible for assisting these individuals onto the next stages of their life. Advice on understanding the transition planning process under the IDEA of 2004, how to accept these individuals more, and how to prepare them for their life long careers. "Guiding Teens with Learning Disabilities: Navigating the Transition from High School to Adulthood" is a must have for any educator in charge of these special needs students and for community library education shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear roadmap for supporting your ld teen
Dr. Roffman has thankfully written exactly the guide book I needed as my Down Syndrome son turned 16. As a parent, I had no training in how to think about transitioning my son to adulthood. He has been in an inclusion school environment all his life, from infant day care to high school. But the transition to the wide-open space of adulthood, when the structures of schooling were gone, was a complete mystery to me. How could I prepare? How could my son be best prepared during his final few years of secondary education?

Roffman's guide is a step-by-step roadmap for parents, of what to do, what to ask, who to ask, and when to ask. It is also useful for anyone on the service side of transitioning learning disabled teens. The book seems most specifically addressed to the parents and service providers of children with more common learning disabilities than Down Syndrome. Yet it helped me to raise my hopes and standards of what to expect for outcomes of my son'stransition as well. For example, with proper preparation, perhaps my son could attend a community college or build a more advanced skill set toward future employment than I was thinking previously.

When I attended his 10th grade IEP review meeting, I felt completely prepared, and for the first time, I knew what I wanted to have happen during the meeting, and it did! This book made the difference. I have recommended Roffman's book to everyone in our school district's SPED PAC, to those who work with my son in the high school, and to members of the school committee. I no longer feel like "the blind leading the blind." Instead, I feel confident that I will be able to support my son's transition with confidence, even if I don't know all the answers yet. Now I know how to ask the questions, of both my son and his service providers, in time for us to figure out the best answers together. If you are parenting a learning disabled teen, or providing services for ld teens, I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. You'll be glad that you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Practical, a Reference, not a story book.
This book is organized well. It explains what youneed to do in a step by step fashion. It has tables, and checklists. It pulls in essential information that you need in reference like style that is easy to go back to.

Other books on this topic, which I've obtained, review, and returned because they read like a story book because they were difficult to reference later on.This one is not a story book, by an emotional author. Its written with facts, objective recommendation and suggestions that you can apply to your own situation as you see fit or as you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable contribution!
This is a concise, well-written, very understandable guidebook for parents and teens with LD facing a challenging time in their lives. Most delightfully, this book is very positive (while realistic) in its tone and suggestions. For a small book, it is simply packed with practical strategies (with emphatic finger-pointing bullets!) and guidance. The timetable is an easy to use resource for those with attention challenges! Dr. Roffman intersperses case vignettes to show the human side of these issues, and she shows what the individuals can and did do to deal with the challenges. Very good role models for success! All in all, an excellent book.I'll keep this copy on hand to show parents and will certainly recommend it to staff and patients. It's a must read roadmap for families who find themselves at this intersection.

What's it like to be a disabled child or young person at a residential school? How do parents feel about their child living away from home? How do local authorities support disabled children, young people and their families to make good decisions about residential school placements, to keep in touch with each other, and to ensure that disabled children at residential schools are safe and well looked after. Based on the experiences of 35 disabled children and young people currently at residential school and the views of their parents, this report outlines the present situation. Building on an earlier stage of research which looked at decision making and policies in 21 local authorities, this report looks at how four case study authorities make decisions about residential school placements. It considers whether current legislation and guidance is effective in protecting and promoting the interests of disabled children who attend residential schools. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Thirteenth Winter
LOVED this book. I picked it up merely because of the cover. It looked interesting. I have not given it to my sister and a friend. It helped me look at my children differently and how they learn. It helped me empathize with those with learning disabilities. I would recomend this book to ANYONE!

5-0 out of 5 stars 11 Year Old's Review
Beautifully written. Striking. You can feel the struggles of her life, not being able to remember locker combinations, count change, do five minus two. She goes through her story with detail and feeling, through middle school, high school, and college. She describes her panic attacks, which included muscle spasms and nausea, which happened all through middle school and returned during college; she described the effects and responses of her self-published poetry book; and she described the struggles of having an LD {learning disability}. No one else could tell her story but her. Even though she always turned to her mom for backup, her mother wouldn't be able to represent the feelings of living up to the "smart girl" persona Samantha was given. Her father wouldn't be able to explain how she always forgot little things at her hotel maid job, like new towels here and an empty trash can there. Her brother Zack can't describe the emotional responses Samantha had received after her book of poems, Reach for the Moon. Even those closest to her didn't understand her. This book was Samantha Abeel's story, and hers only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding and Nurturing Potential
Samantha Abeel has done a great service for kids, parents, and educators by sharing her story about what it means to be twice exceptional, a student with gifts and simultaneous disabilities. We learn of the pain and the triumphs of an individual that was so highly gifted that she published a beautiful book of poetry, "Reach for the Moon," at the age of thirteen, but at the same time needed the support of special education because she couldn't make change, tell time or do basic calculations. She shows us the importance of self acceptance and self-advocacy. We also see the powerful impact that her mother had in tirelessly advocating for attention to both her strengths and her needs. This is a book that should be read by all educators as well as parents of students with special needs and most importantly by the students themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very familiar territory
I almost felt like I was reading my own biography.

This book hit very close to home and is an accessible and easily understood look into what it's like for "smart people" with learning disorders.

The publishers ate a star on this one.I bought the mass market paperback and the print was so tiny it was hard to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book, My Thirteenth Winter
I am a third grade teacher and I bought this book because I thought a child in my class might have the same learning disability that is talked about in this book. The book is very enlightening to those who otherwise wouldn't know much about LD's but it is a memoir so it doesn't neccessarily help you deal with a student or person with an LD any differently. It was very inspiring! ... Positive Intervention for Pupils who Struggle at School provides the resources and information primary teachers need to ensure a happy and effective school experience for all children, particularly those who are seriously struggling. This tried and tested intervention is designed specifically for those children who have been through all the standard interventions, to no avail, and who are now in danger of being excluded.

Explaining the thinking behind the suggested modified curriculum, this innovative book considers the reasons why certain children experience difficulties and looks at how this curriculum addresses their needs and enables them to develop personal, social and emotional skills. The activities are chosen to develop and enhance skills for learning, including listening, speaking, concentrating, a positive disposition and a willingness to take on new challenges.

Helen Sonnet demonstrates how success has been achieved through this strategy and provides valuable information to help teachers to set up similar groups in their own schools, including how to:
