Excerpt:Obock (also Obok, Ubuk) is a small port town in Djibouti. It is located on the northern shore of the Gulf of Tadjoura, where it opens out into the Gulf of Aden. The population in 2003 was about 8,300 inhabitants. Obock was originally significant as the site of the first French colony in the region, established by treaty with the local Afar rulers on March 11, 1862. The French interest was in having a coaling station for steamships, which would become especially important upon the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. (Up to that time French ships had to buy coal at the British port of Aden across the gulf, an unwise dependency in case of war.) By 1885, Obock had 800 inhabitants and a school. However, the anchorage was more exposed than the site of Djibouti on the south side of the Gulf of Tadjoura, and the colonial administration moved there in 1894. Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Djibouti," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Djibouti in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Djibouti when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Djibouti, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

The history of Djibouti goes back thousands of years to a time when populations in the area traded hides and skins for the perfumes and spices of ancient Egypt, India and China. Through close contacts with the adjacent Arabian Peninsula for more than 1,000 years, the Somali and Afar ethnic groups in the region became among the first populations on the continent to embrace Islam. ... Product Description
Somaliland is "Africa’s best kept secret," according to South African academicIqbal Jhazbay. Somaliland has earned this description owing to itsextraordinary achievements in the 12 years since its declaration of independence.Despite being unrecognized and almost entirely ostracized by theinternational community, Somaliland has, following a brutal war withSomalia’s now defunct dictatorship, rebuilt much of its severely damagedinfrastructure, repatriated half a million refugees and removed thousands ofmines from the ground. In addition, Somaliland has maintained a comparativelydecent human rights record and has made significant progress towardsthe establishment of a constitutional democracy.

Rebuilding Somaliland: Issues and Possibilities is the fruit of an extensiveresearch project initiated in 1998 by the former War-torn Societies Project(WSP), now WSP International, in partnership with a local institution, theAcademy for Peace and Development. It aims to present a "self-portrait ofSomaliland" and the challenges facing it at the turn of the century. This book also documentsthe animated, often controversial debates on the future direction thatneeds to be taken in such areas as:

• Decentralization of government institutions
• Media and political reconstruction
• Regulating the livestock economy
• Impact of the war on the family

Functioning as more than records of research and debate, more than essays on post-war rebuilding, these contributions provide a unique insight into the future that the people ofSomaliland want for themselves and for their children. As such, the essays are inmany ways a blueprint for Somaliland as it seeks to regenerate itself into apeaceful, mature society that will earn the respect and recognition of theinternational community. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Little to "smart" at times but really informative and unbiased about Somalilands affairs
This is the first book I buy about Somaliland, and I bought it after I had found a chapter from it on google, the chapter explained in detail the role of the media in the political and economical reconstruction of Somaliland. I am going to spend two years in Somaliland and therefor this book has been extremely valuable source of knowledge. I do how ever advice that you have Wikipedia in hand to look up any words or phrases that you might not fully understand, doing this while reading the book will help tremendously.

Rebuilding Somaliland is in deep coverage of Africa's best kept secret, after reading it I be live that it's authors have made their best effort to make it truthful and unbiased. If you are seriously interested in Somaliland and its affairs I would strongly advice you to buy it. The book is not so light to read and is at times little to "smart" to be interesting or fun, but the book is not intended to be fun, it is supposed to be educating and informative and there it hits the mark. ...
