1-0 out of 5 stars NO LHASA APSOS INFORMATION
This book is not very good. It didn't give any new information about the breed. It just says the same thing about every breed. The only thing different about these types of books are the dog pictures on the front. If you really want to know anything about the Lhasa Apsos breed then don't waste your money by buying this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ACCURATE- FAIR CONDITION
THIS BOOK COVER IS THE EXACT DUPLICATE OF THE LITTLE GIRL I LOST LAST YEAR, I HAD TO HAVE IT FOR THAT REASON.THE CONDITION IS FAIR, THE BOOK HAS USEFUL INFO.THE PICTURES ARE GREAT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a definitive guide but . . .
This book, part of a series of books by Animal Planet, is getting a bad rep.I think people are buying it with unrealistic expectations. What you have here is a nice, small, handy guide to owning a shih tzu.It doesn't get into every minor detail about the history of the breed or anything like that but then it doesn't claim to be an encyclopedic volume either.

I work in a grooming salon and we have a display rack full of these books so I've been through most of them. What we like about this series is that each book is FILLED with pictures.Better still, it doesn't dwell on the "standard" look for the breed but has plenty of shots of dogs in various hair styles, dressed up, shaggy, you name it.

My advice, don't buy these online without looking at them first, but that's my advice about buying pretty much any reference book. It's always better to know what you're getting in advance. So check out these books in the store and if you like what you see, get them. They're very nice, simple, easy to read, lots of pictures.A good start for someone who's interested in the breed but not obsessed with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars not very informaitive
This is a fairly good book for a person who wants a basic knowledge of Shih Tzus, but it isn't very informative for someone who is planning to own or already does own this breed of dog. They seem to play it safe dancing around important topics, like telling you general knowledge of bathing any dog instead of the specific care requirements of bathing your Shih Tzu. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just okay.
This book is just ok. It contains very little information that is specific to the breed, and alot of general "getting a puppy" information. Alot of its content is appropriate for just about any dog. Good for a beginner or anyone who doesn't really need breed specific details.

1-0 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY!!
This book touches on most aspects of owning a chihuahua, but not with any depth!Everything I read was info that could be found online with the littest of effort. Most chihuahua based website I have seen contain more detailed info than this book.It would be great for a pre-teen or teen that wanted a brief glance at the chi. There are many more books out there, buy one of them, such as the The Chihuahua Handbook or Chihuahuas for Dummies.

However it does deserve one star for the beautiful Chihuahua pics! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great historical Westie book
I recently got my first West Highland White Terrier, "Cookie". I had never owned one before so I wanted find out more about them. This book by Holland Buckley seemed the perfect place to start. The historical value of this book is worth the price, but don't buy it thinking your getting a modern guide to the breed. This book tracks the history and early attitudes towards the dog. There are parts in the book about grooming and breeding but because this is simply a reprinting of an early 20th century publication, I wouldn't recommend it for such use. Overall it's a wonderful historical book on the Westie and I would recommend it for anyone who is new to the breed or wishes to know more about the breeds history.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent History of the Breed Book
This 1998 book is a historical introduction to the West Highland White Terrier & is a reprint of the 1911 original by Holland Buckley, who was a turn-of-the-century canine expert. The history of the early Westie is very interesting for all lovers of the breed. There were many differences between today's Westie & the early Westie. This book tells the whole story of how & why they wanted to breed white dogs rather than the original brown; the early breeders; the first West Highland champions; the early sponsors of the dog--in fact the book is dedicated the Countess of Aberdeen who was a staunch supporter of the "little Highlander." As Buckley would say, "Breed them hardy, and breed them game, that they may ever uphold the reputation of their ancient home, the West Highlands of Scotland." As an added bonus, this book is a nice gift book with its plaid endpages & Westie bookmark! A 5 star gift!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Bad!!!
If You want to know how to take care of your West Highland White Terrier this is not the book for you!!! It is all about the history of the breed. If you want to know about the history this is the book for you. ... Read more

Breeding A Litter

If you ever plan on breeding a litter or even if you have one by mistake, this book has some valuable information.

I breed toy poodles and have found this book very useful.Along with advice from a good veterinarian, some background information on genetics, and a solid understanding of the AKC breed standards and you should be ready to go.
It's not easy and it may take a lot of work, and there is definitely no money in it, but if you're truly trying to Improve the breed it can be a lot of fun.

Highly recommended for anyone who breeds a litter.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You Need to Know to Care for Your Beagle
This book is perfect for beagle owners. If you're a first-time owner or if you've owned beagles in the past, this book has all the information you'll need to raise a happy, healthy pet.My family and I recently lost our female beagle to pancreatic cancer. We had her for eleven years and she was a huge part of our lives.I purchased this book right after we brought her home, and it was a big help in explaining how to properly care for her.

We just got another beagle; this time, a male. He's one year old and again, I find myself referring to this fine book for assistance in feeding, crate training, and tips on exercise and general health.

This book is written in a style that is easy to understand for the first-time owner, yet comprehensive enough for more seasoned owners to refer back to.Our beagles have benefitted from the knowledge I gained from reading this fine book.

I recommend this great book very highly. If you're a beagle owner or if you're thinking of becoming one, then pick up this fine book; it will help you raise a happy, healthy friend.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry
I hate to be negative but this book was terrible.I am shocked to log on and see such wonderful reviews. This book is very small and has no more information than you can find on the internet.I am a first time Beagle owner and bought this to learn more about the bread, problems and questions I've encountered in my firt weeks of ownership. After reading the whole thing, I came away with nothing new. There is a whole chapter on breeding and a pregnant Beagle but for the average owner, this is not useful.I wish I could return this book it was such a waste of money - and was only a few dollars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beagles are the Best of all dogs
I have read this book and found it most useful for first time Beagle owners.I have 3 Beagles at home at this time, I have 2 spayed and 1 dog, he is a Champion in good standing with the AKC.

I am just getting started in breeding Beagles for perserving the breed and would give this book to any of the new owners of my puppies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beagles are the best!!
I have a seven year old beagle and have owed him since he was six weeks old.He is the smartest, most fun-loving little fellow I have ever had and is great company. I bought this book soon after I got him and it was a great reference, being this was my first time owning a beagle.

If you have a beagle, or are thinking of getting one...buy the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars it's agood basic book
i bought this book because i had just bought a beagle puppy and had no idea what to expect.it was full of factual inforamation (especially on health) that i still use.it's a good basic book and reference. it helped me so much, from bathing to how to prevent food guarding to basic obedience to field trial references in the back...My Muffin is a sweet, well-adjusted, year old beagle now and all i had for a reference was this book.it's time to move up to involved tricks, which this book doesn't cover, though.this book does teach 'sit, stay, come and heel', however.it's a good buy.i'd recommend it more for the new owner, but based on what i learned, i think any beagle owner would benefit. ... Many pet books that are currently on the market are full of fluff andsound like they could be about any breed of dog. However, Ms. Ellmann haswritten a wonderful guide to Pomeranians. She highlights on the history ofPoms, the proper way to choose a pup, housebreaking, training, grooming, and general health care of Poms. She also gives great information about howto show your dog if you desire to do so. It's not a guide that goes veryin-depth, but in my case, it's a great book to get started learning aboutPomeranians. Don't get me wrong... this book has some useful information. But it's nothing you can't find elsewhere, about dogs in general or boxers in particular. You're paying for glossy pictures and a very slimvolume.

The little useful information that you'll find here is, alas, written in a cloying, cutesy and often ungrammatical style that really drewon my reserves to get through it.I don't normally review books, andrarely give bad reviews, but in this case, I wish I hadn't bought the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars People should not be allowed to profit from a book like this!
The problem is that the idiots who wrote this are actually the type who promote dog fighting. There is a difference for information passed on for historical purposes vs. a how to book. This book, as with all books that lack the type of historical qualities that would justify its recording, should be burned. Yep burned! Come on people step into the light and look around. You are supporting this nonsense by purchasing this clear representation of animal cruelty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historically its a Great Book
For those that want to read a historical account of this type of past this books fills that need.
If it was published in the past and can still be obtained their should be no fear of being persecuted by fanatical liberal individuals/organizations with a an anti-constitutional personal agenda i.e. Freedom of Speech, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hillbillies getting together to write a book about killing a dog
It was ok but it was basically written by a few hillbilly fighters from the bayou. They knew their stuff but the blind ignorance of these owners who truly believe their dog enjoys getting ripped apart never ceases to amaze me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read.
The book is incredible and just full of information that would otherwise be unknown to the public. Its odd that people protest for these books to be banned, yet books about murder, slavery, and oppression of human beings are perfectly legal and considered insightful to the time. This is just as much a part of history as anything else even though dog fighting is legal and regulated in a lot of different places.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maltese Info
This book was quite informative and helpful in my search for information on caring for my maltese.

5-0 out of 5 stars Series
These books are GREAT! I had a Maltese and this book helped me raise him until he died. They tell you every thing you need to know. So buy this inexpensive book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible advise on how to care for your new puppy....
This book is filled with useless information. The advise on how to care for your new puppy is horrible. The author tells you to put your new puppy on the floor and not to handle the puppy unless it's absolutely necessary. The author also advises you to leave your puppy in the kitchen and let him cry all night if that's what it takes. Is this how a new puppy taken from its litter mates and dam should be handled on its first night in your home? I don't spoil my dogs, but they do receive lots of TLC. Don't waste your money on this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory, but...
This is a great book if you're looking into different breeds: It's inexpensive, and is a good introductory to the breed. But if you are bringing a Maltese home in a week, you need to get a more complete bookthat covers the aspects of training, grooming, and puppy care more thanthis book.
