Anyone interested in gathering all they can for knowledge about holism and the way this lifestyle can be implemented for pets SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK. Some of it is opinionated, but the more knowledge that we have to form our education of this subject, the more educated our own opinions can be.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book For Maltese Owners
This must have book for Maltese owners provides great insights into the health and grooming of these wonderful animals. This text written from a dog's perspective was easy to read, humorous and most importantly insightful. The suggestion on feeding, grooming and the effects on their systems was fantastic. Most importantly the information about how vet practices including vaccinations are life saving. Our small Maltese was "overdosed" by a vet who did not check the blood of the animal to see if the shot was needed and we almost lost our precious pup.We use this book weekly and believe it will be of great benefit to anyone who reads it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!!
Great book for people who are concerned about the well-being of their pets!Very entertaining to read from a dog's point of view too!I cannot believe that we have tried so hard to take care of our bodies but never stop to think about what is going into our pets....I am totally disgusted with myself! Thanks to the author for her quick responses to my inquiries about her book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book on dog care changed my dog's life and saved me a fortune in vet bills.
The book is Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care, a national award-winner endorsed by countless holistic veterinarians and organizations and written by Jan Rasmusen. This charming book, narrated by a highly-opinionated 4-pound Maltese named Chiclet, teaches readers everything they need to know about holistic dog care. It includes 90 full color photographs and covers the gamut from avoiding over-vaccination, feeding for health, medicating carefully and much, much more.

Jan's investigation into dog care began after her Maltese, Jiggy, contracted a life-threatening autoimmune liver disease. She learned that many of us are unknowingly damaging our dogs' health by unquestioningly following recommendations promulgated by major pet food and pharmaceutical industries. Her shocking discoveries prompted Jan to help others learn vital lessons about protecting and caring for our canine companions.

Prior to reading the book, I considered myself a responsible animal guardian. Although my financial circumstances changed dramatically following the latent onset of complications from a traumatic brain injury, I continued to place a high priority on providing quality nutrition and veterinary care for my animal companions. I fed them organic pet food free of grains, preservatives and additives and continued their annual veterinary check-ups and vaccinations.

I thought I was doing the right thing to ensure their health, but my reliance on conventional practices was placing my companions' lives at risk. This became evident when I adopted Spirit, a now 9-year old Shih Tzu rescued from a puppy mill. This sweet dog had never experienced the feel of the wind on her face, the grass underneath her feet or the beauty of the night sky. The last thing she needed was bad health interfering with her rehabilitation. However, in the months following her adoption, health issues sent us running to the veterinary clinic many times.

As the problems continued, I sought answers from friends and associates. One day a friend sent us a gift: a copy of Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care. Today, I'm convinced that this gift probably saved Spirit's life. It certainly opened new doors of knowledge, understanding and advocating for our animal companions.

After all the tried and failed treatments for Spirit's ongoing bouts of severe diarrhea, recurring ear infections, watering eyes and a host of other problems, we discovered some simple life saving solutions. Below are a few of our discoveries.

*Defrosting Spirit's raw food medallions in the microwave proved to be the cause of her chronic diarrhea and the resulting dehydration. Microwaving the food alters the fat composition, producing diarrhea and other digestive problems for some dogs.

*After the third round of antibiotics for a recurrent ear infection, we tried a safe topical medication that treats ear infections resulting from bacterial and yeast infections. Spirit experienced immediate relief and the problem appears to be resolved.

*When I inquired about Spirit's watering eyes and the resultant staining of her fur, veterinarians at 2 clinics informed me that it was common to the breed and no reason for concern. I was advised to use over the counter tear stain removal products to keep her eyes and fur clear of the matting. However, the problem continued to worsen, leading me to seek additional help. Utilizing Jan's book, web site and blog and their articles on holistic care, I discontinued the tear stain products and tried a holistic medication for allergies. The improvement is amazing. Spirit has since seen a new veterinarian. He, like Jan, advised against the use of tear stain removal products, stating that these products could worsen the condition because the real cause isn't addressed.

One of the reasons Spirit's health progress is so remarkable is her condition at the time of the rescue relative to her condition today. Spirit is now a certified service dog assisting me with the challenges of living with a traumatic brain injury. In addition to helping me, Spirit shares her story with children and adults in the community. On one occasion she discovered a fire hazard outside of her apartment complex preventing possible injury, property danger and worse. Her keen senses and courage earned her an appreciative following and lots of praise from management. She taught, and continues to teach us, that with proper nutrition, health care and tender loving care, dogs have a lot to offer us humans.

When sharing Spirit's story, I always include the role of Jan, Chiclet (her tiny "co-author) and their ongoing quest to make life better for canine companions like Spirit. On a side note, Spirit's feline siblings, Lucy and Jazz, are also benefiting from the health, nutrition, safety and other information contained in Scared [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Informed consent
As a dog owner, it is my responsibility to make the best informed choices for my precious puppies. This book was enlightening to the max and opened my eyes to the ways in which the lives of our beloved pets are shortened by profit based veterinary medicine and "nutritionally complete dog foods".
Though I've been aware of the dangers of commercially prepared dog foods for some time, I had no idea of the dangers of vaccinations...especially giving little dogs like mine the SAME DOSE that big dogs get...come on!!
IMHO, this book is required reading for every dog owner who wants their precious pup to be around for many years beyond the "usual lifetime". An alternative approach to standard dog care can and does lengthen their lives and makes their lives far more comfortable. Isn't that what we would want for our own family members - because our pets ARE our family members.

This book is a must for any pet owner.I have an extensive collection of pet health books, and most of them do not contain the new, state-of-the-art medical and technological options that this one does.In addition to the newest information available, the book is inspiring for any pet owner facing illness, as various treatment options are easily explained in detail. It is also a terrific book to review before a veterinary visit so appropriate issues and questions can be addressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review Hom. care Cats & dogs
review by Cor van der Meij, homeopath
ISBN number: 978-55643-295-8Publisher: North Atlantic BooksPrice: $20-$25 incl. Shipping (available through: Homeopathic Educational Services, [...])Number of pages: 482
The American vet, and later homeopath/vet, Don Hamilton, wrote , in my opinion, a wonderful book about the homeopathic treatment of pets, named: homeopathic care for cats and dogs. Unfortunately, this book has not yet been translated into Dutch. Why exactly is it such a wonderful book? Because it does not only describe the regular and homeopathic treatment, but also the results of these treatments. Besides, and this is probably the most wonderful aspect of this book, it is based on his own practical experience, both as a regular vet and as a vet with only homeopathic treatments for animals. It has resulted in a pretty voluminous book, 482 pages to be exactly, but it gives the reader value for money. The theoretical part of the book is captivating, sharp and well-aimed. In one of the chapters he describes the aspects of vaccination, quite a controversial subject these days. It takes him 31 pages to come to the conclusion that, based on his own practical experiences with vaccinations, vaccinating does not contribute in a positive way to the well-being of animals. With the use of statistics, Hamilton demonstrates that a drastic decrease of cases with measles, whooping cough and polio had already begun, before they actually started vaccinating human beings. His final conclusion is therefore: don't vaccinate, because it is harmful. I think this is quite a thing to say for a former veterinarian, especially when I look at the ease with which many of those vets pump all these pets (and livestock)full with vaccines.

In the United States, the subject of vaccination is up for discussion. In the Netherlands it isnot (yet), but it definitely will. Can vaccination cause problems?, he asks himself. It might prevent certain disease at short notice, but the meaning of this prevention method is unclear. Might these diseases not be necessary for some reason, do they have certain advantages we do not understand? And furthermore: it is a fact that vaccination leads to weakening of the genes and therefore of the common resistance of a whole group. A bit further in the book he draws the following, strong conclusion: "vaccination is the replacement of an acute disease by a chronic disease". In a chapter with a similar kind of dimension, or better grandeur, he makes an analysis of the objections to regular medication, again based on a couple of years of experience. He relates this to the way regular medical science looks at a disease. Conventional medicine searches the cause of a disease outside the body of the human organism: bacteria's, viruses, moulds, fleas, worms, etc.. With the use of clear examples he explains how the conventional method does not cure a disease, but at best stops it for a while, whereupon the disease aggravates or a disease of deeper located organs originates. This eventually made Hamilton so disappointed with the conventional method that he decided to turn to homeopathy.

Further in the book he pays attention to good nutrition: raw meat, preferably organic, and bad nutrition: dog biscuits that in some cases contain the most horrible ingredients, like pieces of theflea collars of the dead cats and dogs that were processed in the food. Subsequently he gives a description of the homeopathic treatment of several ailments. At the end he gives a description of a number of important homeopathic medicines.

Isn't there a single remark to make with regard to this solid book, that basically describes the treatment of mammals (and therefore human beings), with the only difference that mammals always have an "honest" response to homeopathic treatment. Well, there is a comment to make. He lacks knowledge of Hahnemann's Organon and Chronic Diseases. He blames this on the fact that there wasn't a clear English translation available until recently.. Here he
must have overlooked Robin Murphy's "Commentary on Organon of Medicine", published in 2004, in which the full text of Hahnemann's "Organon of Medicine," 6th edition, is present. This must also be the reason why he attributes by mistake the most comprehensible argumentation about illness to Kent. The complexity of Hahnemann's Organon is not determined by a translation though, but by understanding. This is why he, unfortunately, misses the connection with Hahnemann's method of disease classification, although he comes close sometimes. In some cases his conclusions are a bit outrageous. At a certain point he explains the continuation of a tumour (dissemination to the kidneys) after the removal of a breast tumour, by the homeopathic principle of suppression, which I believe is questionable.

For the last 15 years I have been interested in literature about the homeopathic treatment of pets, and I believe this book really stands out. Don Hamilton is a `hardcore' colleague, who does not only treat animals with homeopathic remedies, but also links this to a clear and obvious understanding of the essence of homeopathy. He is a clear observer who draws conclusions from his bad experiences with conventional veterinary science. And that is something I have not encountered very often. Most veterinary homeopaths treat animals with the so called double-method: both a regular medicine and a homeopathic medicine, which leads nowhere with regard to your own comprehension, I mean. Although I am not a veterinary homeopath, I believe it is easy to conclude that "Homeopathic care for cats and dogs" is an absolute must-read. All we need now is the Dutch translation.

4-0 out of 5 stars I wonder why this is?????
I liked the book; however, I wonder why every time I buy a book on homeopathy it seems like the malady that I am needing help with is not included in the book! Probably, my problem; nonetheless, I could not help mentioning it for what it is worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, nearly all you need to know
This book helped me a lot with my animals. It is optimal for humans as well. It was very well written. In the text are explained both the symptoms and medicines. I recommend it to everyone who wants to know more about homeopathy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book not only provides a comprehensive picture of various conditions and their remedies, but is one of the best explanations of homeopathy I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holistic and helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Intro to Homeopathy for Dogs!
This is the BIBLE on alternative health care.I have 3 very old pets (Sheltie 15+ and cats 17+, 13+) and this has made all the difference in their old age being enjoyable for us all.I am fortunate to live in the Los Angeles area with a plethora of specialists in alternative health care for animals. That said, you get out of something what you put in and animals require proactive, educated owners.

This book allowed me, a novice when I bought it, to learn about other types of healthcare and, with a simple instructions, try homeopathy, chiropracty and acupuncture to treat my pets.

I love how the chapters are broken down by condition withspecific cross references to different types of treatment per condition. There are very helpful warnings for every condition indicating when you can try to assist healing on your own or when you MUST take the pet in for doctor's treatment. The section explaining flower essences was a mind opener.I have seen the wonderful results first hand time and time again.

I can honestly say this book has allowed me to work with the best doctors available and help my pets resolve the many health crises that arise as pets age.I can't recommend this book strongly enough and insist all my friends who get dogs buy it andDr. Pitcairns Natural Health book.Win-win.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vet On Call
I have found this book to be most helpful. It is easy to read and full of good common sense advice. The book has also given me much more confidence in treating minor problems that I would normally have worried about and ended up taking the dog to the Vet just in case I wasn't doing the correct thing.I would recommend the book to any person with a dog, it will be a great help to both the person and the dog.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not that essential
Interesting book about alternative care for dogs and cats with cancer. However, not very specific and even though there are some more specific issues discussed most of the recommendations are not focused on a specific subject. If you really want to fight this disease and need specific and straight foward answers talk to your veterinarian and do a lot of research about it. They will be the best sources to help you face the questions and fears about cancer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to training your dog
This book is easy to understand and covers basic dog training and tackling specific problems. The authors like the "reward with a treat" approach but they don't rule out gentle corrections. They do warn against harsh corrections, explaining why punishment can make your dog fearful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What every pet owner and anyone thinking about owning a pet should know
What perfect timing for the release of this well-researched, thought-provoking guide. President Obama has recently acknowledged the dangers of global warming for the planet. April is the month of Earth Day. Frischmann is way ahead of the curve. Did you know clay kitty litter comes to us via strip-mining? That toxic materials recently discovered in children's toys extend to pet toys? Whether it's a listing of indoor plants toxic to your pets or a discussion of the future of pets and public transportation, Frischmann explores it all. This book is a must-read for all veterinarians, pet store employees, pet owners and anyone considering owning a pet. Our decisions, including our decisions for our pets, do make a difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and fully researched
Frischmann's book tackles the important, but often overlooked discussed subject of how pet ownership affects the environment. It provides information about pet ownership impacts, and great ideas for how to alleviate them. Best of all the author compares the various options pet owners have when making choices.

Thoughtful and fully researched, Pets and the Planet is brimming with great ideas on how to provide better care for your non-human family members without adversely impacting the environment. There are many more environmental considerations of owning pets here than most people realize exist--that makes this book a must read for every pet owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Informative in Light, Accessible Language!
With all the talk and hype that urges us to "go green" it is easy to get mired in the details. What this book has done is streamline all the information and gives it to us in a succinct and clearly outlined manner.

Though the author even helps readers choose the right pet, we already own our dog - but that didn't matter. We were still able to learn about foods, and what's best not only for the environment, but our pup as well; what toys are "green" (who knew?) and even how to dispose of his waste with the least amount of impact on the environment.

The "Take Action" section is great as a learning tool for parents and/or teachers.

The indepth research is impressive throughout this handy little toolkit of a book. It's one that no pet household should be without! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone with an aging dog
I'd highly recommend this wonderful book. Not only is it a valuable reference for my kindle, but an enjoyable read as well that will give you a new insight into your old canine friends. I've owned multiple dogs my entire life and I've been down the aging dog road many times before, but I've been surprised just how much I've learned from this book. I wish I'd had it years ago and I'm glad I have it now. There is much wisdom within and it's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Old Dog Bible" for Aging Doggy Care
This updated, revised version of the award-winning book provides all the must-knows of caring for your mature canine. The aging process is defined, with great advice about how to manage dimming senses, and understand while making accomodations for your dog's physical changes and emotional needs.

Step-by-step home care advice (pilling, fluid therapy, massage and more), insurance options, and help explaining to children the end-of-life issues are offered. The most common "old dog" issues (arthritis to cancer, deafness to heart and kidney failure, incontinence and obesity to reversing doggy senility) cover details about diagnosis, drug/nutritional/natural treatment options, and specialists to help owners are provided.

Unique to the Kindle edition, though, is an incredible value-added in the form of click-able "hot links" to online sources of dog care products, information, and the experts who were interviewed for the book. Bow-wow! My dog edited this book and gives it five paws up!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for owners of senior dogs
This is the book to buy if you want to know if your dog really is a senior dog, what defines aging in a dog, how to recognize the difference between aging and illness, and how to provide just the right care for your furry senior friend. As the name says, it's a "complete" and thorough guide with plenty of tips to help you help your dog live happily and healthily through their golden years.
