Some useful information about canine body language
Dogspeak is one of many dog behavior books I have purchased in the hope of solving a few behavior problems.This book was not the solution to my dog's problem, but it did provide good information for interpreting a dog's body language.I found the photos of different ear and tail positions particularly useful.

Ultimate Health For Dogs
We loved this book. Well researched and written. Very readable. A great guide for anyone looking to get a dog or for someone who wants to know more about caring for a dog you already have. I mean, really, aren't we all stewards of the health of our dog. We act on their behalf.

Good Reference for NewBees
I've been a dog owner for my whole life.Every one of my dogs has gone through at least basic obedience. I found the information on behavior to be light, general and based on common sense.Probably a good starting place for a beginner.Bot if you've had a bunch of dogs, like people they are all very different.What floats one dog's boat does nothing for the next one.I was hoping for more insight on curbing bad dog behavior.

Educational and fun
This book is pretty conventional but it is well written and informative, and it has a definite place in all dog-lovers library. I also like that it has a lot of pictures which makes it easy and fun to read.
It would make a great gift for someone who is thinking about getting a dog and to all the new dog owners.

I would recommend this book TOGETHER with "The Whole Dog Journal's Guidebook to Dog and Puppy Care and Training". These 2 make a perfect package: whatever one is missing, the other has!

Excellent primer
For the past month, I've been up to my elbows in a variety of dog manuals trying to learn the ins and outs of choosing and owning a dog. All of them have been pretty good, but I have to say that this one is by far the best of the lot.

Not only is it lavishly illustrated and written in a very laid back, easygoing style that makes it accessible to anyone from age 9 to 90, it's comprehensive to the point of being encyclopedic. This book covers it all, from the temperament of 50 popular dog breeds and their suitability for city or country living, from common behavioral problems (such as barking, chewing, and anxiety). So in that regard it truly is the bible of dog manuals. That's not to say that it's not the only book worth having or that there aren't other good books for the first time owner, but that it's the perfect primer, in that it introduces you to all the most important things you need to know before picking and choosing a dog.

I can't recommend it highly enough.

Extraordinary journey of a dying dog and his loving masters!
For those who love dogs, and totally commit to their pets through thick and thin, this book is a loving homage to a very special and handsome fellow:Buster B. Brown.Diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 10, and given only two months to live, his owners, author Valerie J. Wood and her husband, Woody, go all out to extend his life while at the same time eliminating, or at least lessening, the pain.We get to meet Buster in his puppyhood, and the cover of the book contains a stunning photo of him.One of the beauties of the book is the excellent and moving photographs of Buster, as well as Baron, his canine companion who is two years older, and who dies a sudden and early death; Bruzzy, an Abyssinian close friend of Buster's; two royal-looking Abyssinians the family adopted towards the end of Buster's life, and even a photograph of the most attractive railroad train I've ever seen - black with a red design - which runs through the small town where they all live in Maryland, the whistle of which would cause Buster to melodiously sing.The photographs were taken by the author (who is a photojournalist, as well as a graphic design publication artist, as is evident in the lovely and unique designs on the front and back cover, and the book's interior).Each page is framed innovatively and decoratively, reminding one of the frame designs in Jan Brett's children's books, which create such a successful effect.Ms. Brett also has a background in design.

The story is so moving I would advise keeping a hanky nearby.You may find yourself needing one at the story's end.I sure did.

I'll really value this book as I have had two pets, a cat and a dog, who have both died of cancer.Had I had the information about holistic health possibilities at that time found in this book, perhaps I could have extended their lives as well.Should any of my present four dogs and seven cats contract that dreaded disease, this book with its abundant advice, including medications given and dietary changes made, will be invaluable.The author also wisely states that one should do one's own research since progress in new discoveries is made all the time.

I want to express my admiration for the author and her husband for loving Buster one hundred percent, and going all out with their entire beings to ease and extend the last months of his life.Without their diligent care, effort and time, he wouldn't have had as many of them.

Touching Story of One Family's Battle with Canine Cancer
This is a sweet & touching short chronicling of one couple's battle with bone cancer in a beloved canine companion.Having gone through a similar experience (lymphoma in a female Black Lab), I found it a particularly relevant & emotional read.

The book is very short - 50 or so pages, many with photographs of Buster & other pets of the author & her husband.It took approximately 30 minutes to read leisurely, so I would compare it more to a long magazine article.However, it also contains a compendium of sorts of natural, holistic diet & supplement based treatments for canine cancers, a resource I wish I had had when our beloved Lucky suffered from lymphoma.These supplements and diet alternatives are nicely summarized at the end of the book, along with a nice bibliography and list of other resources regarding diet & canine cancer.Yes, some of these supplements & diets lack full scientific backing but, when facing the heartbreak of watching a beloved pet & companion waste away from cancer, such relatively inexpensive alternatives for perhaps prolonging and maintaining their quality of life & easing their suffering is most welcome.

I enjoyed reading Buster's story & appreciated the information of alternative diet & treatment options for canine cancer.And, I welcome having this addition to my library, as I continue to have dogs in my household as loved & treasured companions.If I should have to deal with canine cancer again in the future, I intend to use this book as a resource & reference.

Weak text, non-expert advice, some scientific errors
I was hoping this book would, above all else, provide some kind of advice for dealing with grief and making the most of short time with a pet.

But the narrative text is unfocused and lacks helpful insight.A large portion of it describes Buster's history before cancer.Most of it reads like a few pages of someone's diary, in need of revision and organization.But even that was disappointing for what it was.Very little advice on how to help the dog enjoy life while unable to engage in normal dog recreation.No advice on how kids or adults can find comfort either.

The portions on natural treatments are very shallow, mostly a collection of information the author probably found on the Internet, with no special expertise for telling us which are promising, which are useless, or which are somewhere in the middle.A list of suggested books is provided, with no reviews to help the reader decide which of them they might want to read.

I noticed one glaring error.The author repeats the common rumor that "cancer feeds on sugar", and therefore you should reduce/eliminate dietary sugar and carbohydrates/starch (because the body converts them to sugar).This is absurd for two reasons:
a) ALL cells feed on sugar, cancer is not special in this way, and
b) ALL food is ultimately converted to sugar before released into the blood to feed cells.

Cells (all cells) don't eat fat, they eat sugar.You can't starve cancer via diet without starving the rest of your body as well, and you can't stop a tumor from getting sugar by not eating sugar.It can't be done, and it wouldn't work if it could.This isn't an issue of more research being needed on the subject, it's a complete misunderstanding of basic nutrition and biology.

One area where the book was especially weak on research is the unquestioned original prognosis that Buster would only live for 2 months without treatment (and that claim is the basis for the author's conclusion that Buster's actual 10 months is due to the treatments she used).Cancer varies a lot, even when it is known exactly what kind a person (or dog) has.No second opinions, and no range or probability of survival time were included.


This book tries to do several things at once, and does none of them very well.The only medical advice is very vague, nothing more than you could find on the Internet for free.

A "Wake-Up Call" for pet owners concerning their pet's diet
This book is two things;
(#1) A true life story about the author's struggle to provide her special pet with the most comfort and by adding an extension on his life from countless hours of research and by acting on it ASAP.
(#2) A referance guide to supplements, prescriptions & recommended foods which I feel is a must for pet owners.
Anybody who has ever owned pets will agree that there is that "one" that stands out above the rest, the one that it seems like it is insulting to call them a "dog" or a "pet" because they are so much more. It's absolutely devestating when that special one is struck down with a terminal illness. I know this because I too lost my special one, an Akita named Bear, to an inoperable tumor. I truely wish that this book was available when Bear was alive. The author compressed a lot of important information in the back of the book to share. A bookmarker should be placed on page 45 and referred to regularly.

Misleading
Title should be "Busters Scrapbook".This thin "book" is 51 pages long & is mostly pictures of Buster.Page 23 & 24 give some dietary advice.Pages 43 - 50 give 'Supplements, Prescriptions and Foods (Buster's Regimen)'
If you are looking for guidance regarding your beloved pet who has been diagnosed with any type of cancer do not look to this book.The dietary information is limited.Imagine sitting with a co-worker & discussing the regimen they give their dying pet.It's kind of like that.Do not look to this book for comfort.It is not deep.It doesn't grab your heart.It will not help your grief.
I thought this would be a wonderful book for me to read because my grandmother died of bone cancer.I know it's about a dog, but so what?This book sounded so wonderful, like a soothing balm on my still sore heart.Instead I felt disgust.I don't know if I misinterpreted this or not.But from what I can gather from the pathetic little amount of information provided, Buster (unlike my Nana) could have been saved!All he needed was his leg to be removed at the shoulder.The author did not want to do this to Buster due to his age.They opted for holistic treatment instead.I am all for holistic treatment.I avoid the Dr. at almost all costs.Unless I break a limb or get shot, I go the holistic route.Yet the holistic route simply extended this dogs life by 10 months until his cancerous tumor got so big it fractured his leg & they decided to put him to sleep!WTF?In this case wouldn't amputation be the better choice?Dogs can live happy lives with 3 legs!Now maybe I am missing something here.If so, it's not my fault!It is the fault of the author who put together a weak, thin & floppy book filled with words in giant print & lots of pictures of Buster & his friends.
Two stars because I believe in holistic care, health & nutrition.As to the rest, if she really loved this dog, she would have treated him better & not tried to cash in on a "cancer book for dogs".

Great Inspirational Guide
This single book has lead me to create my own dog walking service. I couldn't ask for more in such an enjoyable and informative guide. I would recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly entertaining the idea of starting their own dog walking business!

Enjoyable self employment !!!!!!
After a brief introduction where the author talks about his life and what lead him to start a dog walking business I felt like I was reading a biography of my own life - particularly his discussion of himself as being in one of B.F. Skinner's experiments, and his feelings of "learned helplessness."

After that the book wastes no time getting into the meat of starting a dog walking business - chapter one lays the groundwork by encouraging a self-examination of one's personal finances and then quickly moves into planning a business that will meet those needs.

I will tell you if you are looking for a "small business nuts and bolts book" this isn't it - this book doesn't spend much time talking about the intricacies of running a small business and I was happy about that (see the small business for dummies series)- the author spends his time discussing the unique aspects of starting a dog walking business and where those issues bear relevance to a small business processes, he discusses them at length.


The chapters of this book proceed as "steps" and each builds on the next and at the end of the chapters is an action list which takes the recommendations from the chapter and basically creates an organized "to-do" list - I found the process to be rather fun. I found his chapter on advertising to be excellent and well informed - the author worked in the advertising world and seems to have a great handle on what works and how best to maximize a limited advertising budget - another favorite was the chapter on 'Earning Trust' which brought up many things I never would have thought of.


Later, the chapters begin to delve into the actual issues dog walkers face from difficult dogs, to difficult clients - he discusses dog aggression, behavior, and training and makes an excellent case for becoming more knowledgeable in each, both from a financial standpoint, and from a safety standpoint. I thought the book was extremely well written, clear, and humorous at times - the author, having been a professional dog walker and business owner speaks to you from a position of understanding and experience and I found that comforting and encouraging.

Very informative but...
This book has been a great resource and I love it but there are a few issues that I had when I tried to find the references that he had in the back (web pages only).Since the book was published it seems that his personal web site which he refers to in the first couple pages does not exist anymore as well as a few of the other web sites that he posted.Also I came across a couple of addresses that were totally incorrect.It made me a little bit nervious so I got online to see if I could find anyone to report this too but was unable to find anything recent pertaining to the author.I did however find a few sites that cited him in their own editorials and in those sites I found conflicting information to what I had read in the book. In my college years I learned not to trust the internet as a very high resource in most cases but when there is a significant amount of conflicting information usually this suggests something isn't quite right.

Again I want to make perfectly clear that this is a very informative book but also I would defentally recommend finding another book that is of the same or similar topic and read that as well.Also consult a holistic vet if you have any questions! I have actually found that some of the things I have read I have actually started applying to my own life and the book was just an all around good reminder of good heath for both my dog and myself!It is also very possible being that the internet is a "living, growing, every changing" device that these web sites have just dissapeared since the book was written or changed addresses to something more appropiate than what was previously being used.

GREAT beginning book on holistic dog care
I'm really excited to try some of the stuff in this book! Which says something. I run an herb shop, and have read *lots * of herb books, but am just getting in to using herbs for my pets. This is a great book to get started on this info. I've got several pages bookmarked and am going to use the info on a daily basis, I can tell......overall, a good beginning book, highly recommended. Easy to read and full of good quality information.

great little book that is easy and simple
This book is a great idea. Simple and easy. Recipes are delicious enough for you to eat as well as your furry little friends. Uses ingredients which you can find in your pantry and educates you on why you should feed your dogs a vegan diet and what is good and bad for dogs.

Great value, great concept and is completely animal friendly.

Fine for small dogs
This book has no nutritional information with the recipes, so no way to size them up (or down) appropriately for multiple or bigger dogs.They seem geared towards small dogs, generally.I can't really use this for my three greyhounds.At least not yet, since I haven't fully learned just how much of a given ingredient my dogs need in a meal.There also are no claims that the meals are balanced, or what might be needed to make them so (taurine, l-carnitine, various vitamins or minerals ...).
I highly recommend (as does the author) that you do a lot of research on your own before you use this book.She may have done research, but she doesn't share it here.

Dog is Love; Vegan Dogs, Doubly So!
First, some background: I went vegetarian my freshman year of college (1996) and vegan approximately eight years later. Currently, I'm an adopted mother to five rescued dogs, whom I've been feeding a vegetarian diet (consisting of both store-bought and homemade food) for about seven years. In the past year or so, I've been trying to transition them to a vegan diet. The Book Publishing Company kindly sent me a copy of THE SIMPLE LITTLE VEGAN DOG BOOK for review on my blog.

Michelle Rivera's THE SIMPLE LITTLE VEGAN DOG BOOK is a quick, easy read. Part cookbook, part nutritional primer, part lifestyle guide, the book is divided into several sections:

1. "The Vegan Lifestyle" briefly examines the reasons for and benefits of veganism for dogs (here called a "vegan lifestyle," since dogs are not "vegans" in the ethical/moral/philosophical sense of the word). Throughout this chapter, Rivera offers anecdotes from several guardians of vegan dogs, detailing how and why they decided to transition their dog-kids to vegan diets. She also includes some basic information about canine nutritional needs.

Though Rivera did consult with veterinarians while writing THE SIMPLE LITTLE VEGAN DOG BOOK, the book is not intended as a comprehensive nutritional or health guide. Rather, it helps to provide encouragement and support to those parents who have already decided to transition their dog-kids to veganism. In this way, the dog parents profiled within these pages function as a sort of support group for those already on the path to canine veganism, instead of an impetus to begin the journey.

That said, if you're still struggling to decide whether veganism is the right choice for you and your dog-kids, THE SIMPLE LITTLE VEGAN DOG BOOK isn't for you. Instead, I recommend searching your local library for books on canine nutrition - and not, necessarily, books specific to veganism and dogs. (To the best of my knowledge, no such books exist. Publishers, are you listening? *wink*) I think you'll find that most veterinarians, while generally opposed to vegetarian and vegan diets for dogs, will begrudgingly admit that such diets can be healthy, as long as they're formulated with care and knowledge. For me, hearing these words from speciesist omni (nonhuman) animal medical and nutritional professionals is what ultimately compelled me to make the leap to homemade vegetarian and, eventually, vegan foods.

2. "Hazardous and Safe Ingredients" is as straightforward as can be. Here, Rivera offers information about which foods you should avoid giving your dog-kids, and why. She also gives a few suggestions for healthful and tasty foods.

3. "Getting Started" seems a rather odd chapter to me. In this section, Rivera introduces five staples - beans, rice, lentils, barley and oatmeal - along with suggestions on how to prepare and store these items for later use. Thus, she explains how to soak and cook each item (good), directing readers to store and freeze the extras in single-serving containers (not so much "bad" as it is puzzling). Preparing beans, rice and the like doesn't strike me as a big enough inconvenience that I'd need to cook a huge batch at a time and waste valuable, energy-sucking freezer space to store the extras. Plus, these items on their own are just ingredients; they don't constitute entire meals, so these frozen foods still require extra prep. I don't see how this strategy is advantageous, that is, unless one cooks a new meal for one's canine kids every day? In which case, dog bless ya!

4. "Biscuits" begins the recipe portion of The Simple Little Vegan Dog Book. Here, we have four appetizers, if you will: Yeasted Gourmet Dog Treats; Basic Vegan Dog Biscuits; Bulldog Bulgar Biscuits; and Oatmeal and Parmesan Biscuits.

5. "Main Dishes" features eight hearty dishes: Barking Barley and Wheat Surprise; Snoopy's Great Pumpkin, Rice and Beans; Canine Cashew Casserole; Oats, Rice, Veggies and Lentils; Rover's Risotto; Fruits, Veggies and Oats; German Shepherd's Pie; and Chihuahua Chili sans Carne.

The theme in this section is flexibility. Many of these recipes are jumping-off points; readers are encouraged to experiment with different grains, fruits and veggies in order to create their own dishes. In particular, "Main Dishes" illustrates just how easy and enjoyable cooking for your dog-kids can be, given a little time, planning and creativity.

My only real complaint with this section is that many of the recipes call for store-bought, low-sodium, no-onion vegan gravy and vegetable stock. While vegan gravy and veggie stock are readily available in stores, finding versions that are both low in sodium and onion-free is, dare I say, impossible. Thus, recipes for each of these ingredients would have been greatly appreciated. Instead, I improvised and came up with low-sodium, onion-free versions of each myself.

6. "Special Treats" is the final grouping of recipes in The Simple Little Vegan Dog Book. Nom noms include Banana-Nut Crunch Bars; Apple Pupcakes; Bowser's Birthday Cake; Pekingese Pumpkin Pops; Snickerpoodles; Cheese Dog Delights; Hound Dog Delights; Puppy Part Hors D'oeuvres; and Peanut Butter Banana Treats.

Of these recipes, I've sampled the following thus far: Barking Barley and Wheat Surprise; German Shepherd's Pie; Snickerpoodles; and Peanut Butter Banana Treats. All were a big hit with the dog-kids, and the husband even liked the German Shepherd's Pie!

So, to summarize: THE SIMPLE LITTLE VEGAN DOG BOOK is just that - a simple, little book about vegan dogs for their parents and guardians. If you aren't already inclined, it won't convince you of the merits of a vegan diet for your dogs. But if you're already on the path, it might help to make your journey a bit more enjoyable.

Highly recommended for dog owners of all breeds and backgrounds

A very basic overview of dog behavior
This book is, at best, an extremely basic overview of dog behavior, and doesn't really offer any practical, in-depth training advice. I would only recommend this book to young people (not too young - there is an illustration and explanation of mating in dogs) or beginners who are considering dog ownership. If you are serious about obedience training your dog at home, then look to a more serious training book, such as the Monks of New Skete's "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend", or Brian Kilcommon's "Good Owners, Great Dogs". ... I'm a dog lover
I make my schnoodles food and have been doing it for almost 3 years now.I was looking for a new kibble recipe and was disappointed that this book did not have one.Other than that, it was pretty informative.

Covers all bases
I checked many books out from the library to research pet nutritional information. This was by far the best.It really does cover all the bases.It is well written and explains the digestive tract of our cats and dogs in an interesting manner and processed foods, homemade and raw diets are covered.Not only does it have nutritional information and recipes for cats and dogs, but it also covers recipes for senior pets and other special needs such as obesity, allergies, heart and kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis and liver disease.It has simple, but nutritional recipes for treats.Really, it has everything.The only negative thing is that it is paperback.I think it would have been better published in hardback because it is one of those books that I want to keep around for a long time.

Common Sense Help for dogs with Epilepsy
I bought this book for my daughter who got a beautiful and sweet Border Collie mix from the Shelter.After about 6 months the dog had what appeared to be a seizure and continued to have them every 4 - 6 months.The book was informative and helped relieve a lot of her anxieties and gave her direction in what to do during and after a seizure.The book is helpful and provides natural pet care.It is not a complete work on the medical condition and lacks a great deal in providing all the medical solutions for this disorder.The book was promptly shipped in excellent condition.

Good resource for the right price
This book was a great read for me the day before my wife and I picked up our dog from the kennel.
I read through the book within 2 hours and learned much about my new companion. I recommend this book on the grounds that it does allow the reader to understand things more from a dogs perspective. It deals mostly with health issues but the psychology of dogs is also touched upon, and the background of the species that is summarized is quite interesting.
If you have the extra cash to put towards buying this book it will be an okay purchase- you may find yourself, as I have, returning to the index in the event that your dog seems ill or acting strangely. However if you are not willing to pay the full price for the book you can easily spend an afternoon in a store reading through it.Any used copies available that are under $5.00 I would consider a smart purchase.

I found To Your Dog's Health! to be both helpful and enlightening. This book is a great resource for dog owners.

With chapter titles like All Foods Are Not Created Equal and Be a Top Chef for Your Dog, author Mark Poveromo informs the reader on how to give their dog the best nutrition possible. Formerly a teacher, Mark is now an expert on animal nutrition as well as the owner of a dog and cat food store.

He is a holistic practitioner and has his own dogs on raw food diets as well as cooking for them at home himself. His own chocolate lab lived to be 17 years old.
There are healthy recipes included within the book as well as brands Mark recommends. He gives advice on picky eaters and on how to transition your dog from the food he is currently eating to a different diet.
He discusses several interesting topics including dogs with cancer and what foods help prevent it, as well as what foods they should be eating once, heaven forbid, they are diagnosed with the disease. Mark also tells you what to look for when you are reading labels.
I liked that there is a photo included at the start of each chapter. I thought that was a nice touch.

I will definitely be making sure that I am label reading when purchasing food and treats for my own furbaby, Diego. This book has been an eye opener when it comes to my dog's eating habits and the food that I chose to give him.

Valuable information every dog owner should know
Mark does a great job clearly outlining the health needs of dogs (and cats) in this book. He walks through the different types of nutrition such as grocery store kibble, holistic foods, home cooking, and raw. He gives great advice and recipes for home cooked meals, meals for dogs with kidney disease or cancer, and what to look for in kibble.

His one chapter on raw feeding was a bit of a disappointment compared to the amount of time he spent on other subjects. While he went into great detail on kibble, home cooking for your dog, supplements to use, recipes, and things to keep in mind for certain health issues, he spent only one chapter on actual raw feeding and did not discuss how to do it yourself. He mentioned that there are good raw food manufacturers, but did not discuss how to balance your dog's meals if you don't buy a prepackaged raw diet. I would have liked it if he went into more detail in some areas, including this one. I found this lack of information especially odd in light of the last paragraph of the chapter on raw feeding where Mark Poveromo said, "For the record, I have been feeding my pets a raw diet for about seven years now, and have had tremendous success."

However, there was a wealth of information about vitamins, enzymes, carbohydrates, and vegetables, that I still came away learning a lot. Based on this information, I will try changing up our dogs' diet a bit, but I will probably also consult some other raw diet resources before making a final decision.

I was delightfully surprised that he wrote a chapter about vaccines and other treatments. I must say I found his thoughts on that subject well balanced and helpful.

I do recommend this book for a quick, easy to read overview of dog nutrition. In fact, despite my disappointment with the raw food chapter, I found enough good information in the book, that I am keeping it on my shelf to read again. There are various facts in this book that more pet owners, and vets, need to know. One such fact is that the protein in most kibble is from rendering facilities. These facilities take leftover animal pieces (meat, fat, blood, bone, and feather) and render them down to be included in kibble. These are the animal pieces that are not sold in grocery stores because they are not fit for consumption! And because of this poor protein quality, we are seeing increased incidents of health issues in our pets.

Just like humans, our pets are what they eat, and we owe it to them to make sure we give them the best nutrition possible.

Interesting Information
I have one dog with food issues/allergies and another who is getting older and has to watch his weight. I found the book to be very helpful in knowing what to look for in dog food and to make an educated decision on what to feed my dogs. Mark takes a more holistic approach to feeding and we have found that is what works for our guys here too. There is information on what to look for in a dog food, feeding a raw diet, feeding a dog with cancer or kidney disease and some information on vaccines and supplements. Each chapter in the book also has a cute paw print with a tip inside it. It is a very interesting book to read especially after all the pet food recalls in recent years. The book was easy to read and understand.

My dogs have never looked so good
I had just gotten a new boxer puppy to be a companion for my 10 year old boxer, and if it weren't for Mark and his book I wouldn't have been able to start the puppy off the right way. When I first got the puppy he was undernurished [the breeder had the puppy weened off the mother's milk at four weeks old and started him on dry commercial food], and after talking to Mark and reading his book, he's gained four pounds. Even our ten year old has slimmed down and doesn't have breathing problems any more [no more snoring!], all because of the raw diet. I would absolutely recommend Mark's book to anyone whether they're first starting out with a pup [or a kitten] or if they have a senior; Mark's advice covers all ages.

Inaccurate Information
I was very disappointed with this book in general. I am a veterinary technician by profession and have read books and scientific literature on the topic of canine and feline nutrition and this one met very few of my expectations. None of his information was substantiated and he gave faulty information on some things other than nutrition. For example: He discusses on page 33 the 'medical community's' suggestion of the effectiveness of the Lyme Vaccine and compared it to the spirochetal bacterium syphiis and notes how no cure yet exists for syphilis. Last I checked, a shot of Pen G took care of that, even the writers of the TV show House know that. How can I trust the rest of his information which he has no research or proof of if he can't get facts like that straight? Also, he discussed the raw diet and compared the pros and the cons. He very blatantly states his support of the raw diet (which is fine) but does a very poor job of discussing the cons of the diet. Great Information on Dog Health Issues
I recently adopted a little long-haired stray from the city pound. I was instructed not to bathe him for at least ten days because he had just been neutered the day I picked him up. The poor dog's hair was very matted and he smelled something fierce. And, worst of all, he was constantly scratching and he seemed to be miserable. I thought the odor and scratching were just natural, because he probably had not had a good bath since forever. After the waiting period passed he got his bath and his hair was trimmed. To my dismay, I discovered that he had a horrible skin condition. His skin was crusty and oozing and in some spots it was very irritated because he had been scratching so much. I even thought it was mange. I also discovered that he had a discharge from the right eye and his skin was irritated in that area.

I thought of taking him to the vet, but first I decided to do some research in the Internet and I came across this book at Amazon. I have not read the whole book yet, but I thumbed through it and read, among other items, the sections that were pertinent to my dog's condition. I am happy to report that, after following the book's advice, my dog's skin is now in perfect condition. He is not miserable any more, no scratching, no sores, no crusts. The bare spot on the inside of his right eye has has all but disappeared and the discharge has cleared completely.

I am not saying that I will never have to take my pet to the vet because I have this book. In fact, in several sections of the book Dr. Tedaldi suggests the pet should be taken to the vet right away. However, I know for a fact that I saved several hundred dollars and paid for the book many times over with just the advice that I got for the problems described above.

The book has 304 pages. It has a table of contents and an index, and is divided into 18 Parts. Part 1 lists what a dog owner needs in his/her Canine First-Aid Kit and some basic information on first-aid treatments. The remaining Parts and sub-parts describe the conditions a dog may present. I am not going to list all the parts and sub-parts because they are very numerous, but some of the titles are: My dog is bleeding from her eye; My dog has irritated skin on her face; My dog has dark areas on his skin; My dog is gulping or swallowing strangely; My dog has something stuck in his paw; etc., etc. Each Part and sub-part follows a uniform format. First Dr. Tedaldi describes what to look for, then he explains what to do. Also included in every Part and sub-part are frames entitled "Warning" and "When to Get to the Vet". The book has a few photos and drawings as well. I found this book to be very well organized, extremely useful, clear and informative.

What a Guy !!
Dr. Tedaldi is one of the most down to earth, intelligent and funny vets I have ever met.I am caring for the sweetest 13 year old dog who has cancer and very bad arthritis which at times has presented some challenges, especially since he's about 100 lbs. Dr. Tedaldi is only a phone call away and I never feel that any question I ask is too silly.Just by the way Dr. Tedaldi touches Ajax when he's here I can tell how much he truly cares for animals.Keep up the great work !!

Great book, the Best Vet!
First of all I think the book is terrific and really should be on the coffee table of every dogowner! It provides specific information on how to treat and take care of your beloved dog on a day to day basis. And as specific as the information is, it also reads easy enough, (ie, we don't get bombarded with complicated medical terms that we don't understand)that every petowner can understand and use wisely in creating a happy and healthy dog. And all the while providing you the information you need to be responsive to your dog if certain conditions develop either internally or externally.
As for Dr. Tedaldi himself, all I can add is this. As a dogowner, never having children myself, I have lived for my great pyrs literally, they ARE my children. And my oldest dog/baby Lars, had struggled mightily physically the last year and half of his life. And all I can say is if it hadn't been for Dr. Tedaldi, I may not have been able to enjoy Lars that last year and a half of his life. His warm and compassionate and outstanding treatment of his many ailments kept my dog alive and also kept me a peace of mind as well. I'll ALWAYS be grateful to him for that! After dealing with Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston for years, there is no better Veterinarian that I've ever known than Dr. Tedaldi!

A beautiful book by an extraordinary vet
Jake Tedaldi is without a doubt the best veterinarian our family has ever known.This book is a great contribution to human-dog communication.If our dogs could speak to us they would tell us many of these things, but instead Dr. Tedaldi speaks for them, in clear and reassuring language, not flinching from the sometimes startling or upsetting things our dogs are going through, but always giving their humans great guidance on how to be their best friend.This is the kind of book you can pick up in the middle of the night to find out what to do if your dog has just been sprayed by a skunk.
