It is a story of hope that unveils the magic of this world, the magic we too often seem to forget.

2-0 out of 5 stars Jonathan Livingston Dolphin
I found the similarity toJonathan Livingston Seagull to be highly annoying and distracting throughout the book.Dolphin just isn't as well written and has nothing new to say that Jonathtan Livingston Seagull didn't say better 30 years ago.Shouldn't we expect a new book to have something new to offer? The similarities are so grating. It's a poor imitation if not an outright plagiarism. The only benefit to reading this book is if you get it in Spanish, it's written at a nice easy level and is easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent story
Bought it for a land-locked 13-year old ... I loved it, believe this will help open up her world!

2-0 out of 5 stars Simple story
I was most disappointed with this story. It held my interest, page to page, but only because I kept expecting something more, greater to happen. It wasn't good enough.A "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" repeat storyline with a dolphin, instead.

Simply written, it can be a child's book - and maybe that is who the author was targeting?

5-0 out of 5 stars June Nolen author of In Reverse Time
It's a little book with a big message. Be yourself, even when everybody else thinks you're crazy and tells you so. Go for your dream and don't give up. It's worth it in the end. Trust that inner voice! Very profound!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!
This is a wonderful book... one that should be read over and over again... I purchased this book because our son, who drowned on 9/3/02, loved the ocean, the earth and every living creature... I read it one night and cried quite a bit.It just reminded so much of him and the things he used to say to us... Definitely a book to add to your collection... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dolphins from human perspective
These books are about dolphins from a human perspective and are very nice. Some readers might also like a book from a dolphin perspective that occasionally mentions humans, which is Ocean Echoes:A Dolphin Tale by Shaney Frey.Ocean Echoes is for mature adolescents and adults. It contains a few scenes that are not appropriate for younger children. However, for the teen and adult readers it might be a nice complement.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loved it
She read it in one day. Only eight years old, it's nice to find a series of books that she will read. The story is filled with many good morals and adventures which kept her interested. Her favorite part was when Jody was pushed and the dolphin found and rescued her.

At the end of the story it wraps up well and she's ready for the next one. Any parent out there who wants to see their girl, or boys too, look forward to reading, get them this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever!!!
The book Dolphin Diaries is a WONDERFUL BOOK! Jody goes on a boat ride and the name of the boat is Dolphin Dreamer. Then this mean girl shows up named Brittany, and she almost ruins the whole trip. One day, when Jody is outside on the boat Brittany comes and pushes Jody off of the boat. And Jody has nobody to save her. Then all of sudden it started to storm really really bad. She could not see anything at all. Then out of the blue came a DOLPHIN. And he took her to the Dolphin Dreamer. And Jody decided to give the dolphin a name. Which she named him Apollo. So if you like dolphins, and books get you thinking this is the right book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dolphin Diaries

Dolphin Diaries by Ben M. Baglio was and incredible book. It was about this girl named Jody and how she is going on a trip for a couple of months on a boat called the Dolphin Dreamer and she has exiting adventures. There was tons of excitement, my favorite part was when Jody falls off the boat during a really bad storm and the dolphin is the only one who can rescue her or she will drown even though she is a good swimmer. My least Favorite part was when a snobby girl named Brittney joins the trip and almost ruins the whole trip for Jody.
The story can be very useful when it comes to friends and peers, you need to look past first impressions, because maybe they are going through something hard to deal with, or they are just having a bad day and are taking it off on you.
If I was to rate this book I would give it four stars because I think that the book could have been a little more detailed, but other than that it was very exhilarating and eye-popping book.

Product Description
When Sy Montgomery ventured into the Amazon to unlock the mysteries of the littleknown pink dolphins, she found ancient whales that plied the Amazon River at dawn and dusk, swam through treetops in flooded forests, and performed underwater ballets with their flexible bodies. But she soon found out that to know the botos, as the dolphins are locally called, you must also know the people who live among them. And so in Journey of the Pink Dolphins, Montgomery—part naturalist, part poet, part Indiana Jones—winds her way through watery tributaries and riverside villages, searching for botos and hearing the tales of locals who believe these ethereal dolphins are shape-shifters—creatures that emerge from the water as splendidly dressed men or women only to enchant their human onlookers, capture their souls, and then carry them away to the Encante, an underwater world. Montgomery takes readers on four separate journeys, exploring the river-dwelling dolphins’ natural history, chronicling their conservation pressures, unraveling their prehistoric roots, and visiting with shamans who delve into the Encante.

Amazon.com Review
Pink dolphins--and yes, in the Amazon River theflamingo-colored mammals do exist--are believed by Brazilians andPeruvians to take human form, impregnate women, lure lovers to anunderwater paradise, and in various ways drive those who encounterthem mad. They seem to have worked their magic on science writer SyMontgomery, who journeys through rain forests and sunken cities in amad-dash pursuit of the enigmatic creatures.

Despite encounterswith piranha-filled waters, toxic ants, and large rats--not to mentionboat failures, foreign language problems, and alternate blasts of sunand rain--the persistent Montgomery pushes happily on, offering alyrical account as intoxicating as the subject itself. She eventuallymakes contact, swimming with them, even holding one in her arms, butthat may be the least relevant aspect of the entire book. Montgomeryturns nature into a bewildering drug, opening doors into cultural andbiological worlds invisible to most, but which teem with as muchunseen life as a drop of river water held under amicroscope. --Melissa Rossi ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Go along for the Journey of the Pink Dolphins
Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest

Brilliant, gorgeous and sexy, Lucy and Ethel venture through the Amazon in search of the Pink Dolphins is the sense readers will get with this book.
Sy Montgomery is brilliant! The way she has interwoven science with comedy is nothing short of genius! Where others leave you bored, Montgomery draws the reader in as if they too are a guide on her fantastic journey with her intrepid side kick and photographer, Dianne Taylor Snow. Montgomery and Snow play off of each other like Lucy and Ethel, yet leave the reader with a broader knowledge of the Amazon and its inhabitants-- both animal and human. The science, humor and lore will keep the reader enthralled throughout and guaranteed to hunger for more of this genius author! They will certainly not be disappointed! Excellent photography!

2-0 out of 5 stars OK. so the dolphins are pink....sort of
I'm a big fan of well written adventure books and books on natural history. The best of them transcend their subject matter to arrive at bigger truths about human nature, the world, and mankind's place in it. Sy Montgomery tries mightily to link her experience up with The Bigger Story, but never manages to do it. Her attempts to be profound become almost embarrassing after a while.

Sy writes a nature column for the Boston Globe and it shows. Everything of interest she has to say in this book could have been said in a column or two. In this book, she's taken that column and simply repeated it over and over and over. Thus we hear narrative after narrative from the locals about how the bufeo live in an enchanted underwater city and come up on land periodically to seduce women. We spend day after day in a boat with her exclaiming "There's one! And there's another one!" After a while I found myself thinking "Sy, you go out in the boat and look for the bufeo. I'll lounge here on the hotel veranda and have some refreshments until you get back. Have a nice time."

Unlike some reviewers, I didn't find anything `magical' or particularly poetic about her descriptions of the environment. It's not that she's a bad writer - clearly she isn't - butshe describes things the way a travel columnist would describe an exotic locale for readers planning their next vacation - the size of the trees, the depth of the water, the different kinds of plants and bugs and wildlife you may encounter, with some attempt to make it all sound beautiful.

She does give some superficial history of the Amazon Basin,a little evolutionary history of dolphins, some "highlights" types of descriptions of a couple of towns and villages - everything you need to know to enhance your vacationing experience. She meets a lot of people along the way and dutifully describes the physical appearance of most of them. She tries to instill a little personality in each of them but can't pull it off, so even these encounters take on the quality of "And then I met this tanned woman wearing khaki shorts who was interested in manatees."

In the end, we have gone on a trip with Sy and visited a local market or two, admired the opera house at Manaus, caught some glimpses of the pink dolphins, listened to various natives tell the same legend, gone to the funeral of a drowned child, dodged a snake or two,and gotten sweaty in the jungle. If you had any interest in pink dolphins before you started the book, you'll be over it by the time this trip ends.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating but Frustrating
As someone who's interested in the Amazon, its people, culture, geography, fauna, flora and other subjects, I read this book for its fascinating topic. However, this is a very mixed bag. There are moving sections, as when she describes the genocide perpetrated against the native peoples by Europeans (you would not believe the atrocities and torture they visited the Indians, whom they considered lower than animals - much worse in its ferocity than the Holocaust of WWII).The writing can be quite bad at times (at one point, her powers of description comes up with a fruit she tried, "bitter as semen").But the worse is, she seems to be a very bad science writer and researcher.Who edited this book?Certainly not people versed in science or Portuguese. She gets everything in Portuguese wrong. The scientific names and terms are often misspelled.Proceed with caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars enchanting travelogue and work of natural history
I loved this book! Sy Montgomery is a talented writer, able to put you in exotic places with vivid descriptions, I almost felt I was in the Amazon. She really brought it to life, I look forward to reading another book of hers I have purchased, "Search for the Golden Moon Bear."

The book focuses on the author's quest for the pink dolphin, but really it is a journey to find not one but two dolphins. I don't refer to the other species of dolphin that lives in the Amazon, the tucuxis (one which she also covers in the book), but for two sides of the same animal. On the one hand she searches for the pink dolphin, the bufeo in Spanish or boto in Portguese, a living animal of which little is known about in comparison with many other dolphin species. Living in the most massive river system on earth, one connnected to innumerable lakes in the rainy season, in waters often black as coffee and infested with caimans, piranha, stingrays, and electric eels, in often very remote regions to which there is no reliable transportation to, it is a difficult subject to study. An example of cetaceans from an earlier geologic era, primitive when compared to modern oceanic dolphins, the pink dolphins preserve something from an eariler era, a holdover in the modern world. Montgomery and her various companions in the book struggle to get good observations of the dolphins, to try and track them, to identify individuals, to observe their behavior. The author finds that even experts who have studied the bufeo for years are often perplexed by them. She has many successes, providing much interesting information on them and a fine series of color photographs of the often startingly pink dolphins.

Montgomery though is also questing for the Encante, the mystical shape-shifting dolphin that is very real to many of the peoples who live along the mighty Amazon. Believed to exist in fabulous cities beneath the surface of the river, the locals speak in conspiratorial tones about the dolphins' magic powers and often lust for attractive humans. The natives often worry that their wives, husbands, sons, and daughters will be stolen about by the fabulous Encante, and speak with awe and reverence about the dolphins. Montgomery continually quests for the natives' views of the Encante, for their "true" tales, and for how they protect themselves against their fantastic attention.

Montgomery doesn't exlusively focus on dolphins though. Her book in part is a vivid travelogue of Amazonia, bringing us to many exotic locations. We visit Manaus, the impossible Paris of the Amazon, home to an opera house right out of a fairy tale. Built upon the backs of native jungle peoples by rubber barons, today it is a squalid city trying to embrace change. She takes us to amazing Meeting of the Waters, where for miles two tributies of the Amazon, the black River Negro and the white Solimoes, flow side by side before forming the true Amazon River. We are taken to two different nature reserves, both with differing strategies, Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo and Mamiraua, where some of the rich life and deadly beauty of Amazonia is preserved against an uncertain future. Montgomery takes us to the impossibly clear waters and white sandy beaches of the Tapajos and Arapiuns Rivers, where she actually swims with the dolphins, something not possible elsewhere in the dark and piranha-infested rivers elsewhere. She undertakes a vision quest by taking the hallucigenic Ayahuasca or "Mother of the Vine," something few Westerners have done (and for good reason).

Further, while the bufeo or boto is the star of the book, many other animals form a rich supporting cast. The odd hoatzin, a bird with claws, seemingly someting out of the Mesozoic. Electric eels, extremely common and suprisingly complex. Caimans, another seemingly prehistoric species. Amazonian manatees, gentle vegetarians that are much more intelligent than often given credit for. The weird side-necked turtle. All manner of insects, including ants. And more are given space.

Some have said that she rhapsodizes too much in the book, but I disagree. She has done her research, the book is filled with interviews with experts, and there is a nice bibliography at the end. She has skillfully combined hard science with poetry, and the effort is very worthwhile. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazonian vacation
This is one of those books to read when you don't have the money and/or time to actually travel the planet.I enjoyed that Sy both had a grasp of biology and is a truly talented author. She also obviously cares about the socioeconomic situation of the peoples who live in the area that her biological studies took her. This book transports you into a magical world in which pink dolphins inhabit rivers in a mystical jungle.Sometimes the truth is better than fiction. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dolphin Diaries #3
Excellent books for kids ages 8 - 12. The story keeps their interest even if they are not a strong reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love dolphins and want to learn more about them,
read this series. I read this series two summers ago when my friend loaned them to me. I was sick most of the summer. Even though I was stuck inside, the books took my mind to out on the ocean, and before I knew it, I felt like I was there swimming and learning about dolphins myself.
~MY ONLY confusion about this series is that when I went to buy the series for myself all the books I found had a different author, same story, same cover, but different author on the front cover. All my friend's books say Lucy Daniels one the front as theauthor, but all the books I find online and in stores have Ben M. Baglio written on the front as the author.
~Can someone please explain this to me?
PS: The last reviewer must know nothing about dolphins or guys b/c most of my friends that are guys are smart and talk a lot and explain things well. Also, I've worked with dolphhins before, the book does not make them unrealistic. Dolphins are very intelligent creatures and every single thing the dolphins in this series did WAS DONE IN REAL LIFE BEFORE by real dolphins, do your research. There are many rescue stories by dolphins and most of the things in this fictional book are based on real things dolphins have done and do. This series teaches you a lot about these wonderful mammals. Read it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent
Dolphin Diaries is a fun, original series about a girl traveling the world looking for dolphins to watch, study, and enjoy with her family. This book is very descriptive, and the characters are very expressive and emotional...which can be good and bad, depending on what the character is saying, and what point they're trying to make. This series is definately for girls between the ages of eight and eleven or twelve.Any older, and you start noticing unrealistic parts and becoming annoyed with characters that are supposed to be everyones' favorites.

The main thing that bugged me about this book was all of the wild dolphins.Dolphins are friendly and smart, I know, but the author makes the dolphins a tad too human-like and unrealistic. The dolphins always seem to fix everything and amaze everyone...all of them, not just the main few.

The characters can also explain too much, especially the men. Most guys aren't big talkers, but most of the guys in this story are always opening their mouthes.

But if you like dolphins, you'll love this series! It is full of facts about dolphins mixed with a very creative storyline. ... Read more

Product Description

Winter is a dolphin. Just over two years ago, when she was a baby, she was rescued from a crab trap, her tail seriously damaged. Winter was rushed to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a marine animal hospital. It wasn't clear that she would survive. She did, but eventually the tail fell off and Winter compensated by swimming more like a fish than a dolphin which was seriously damaging her spine. But for the last year, Winter has been learning how to use a prosthetic tail. The idea came from a company that makes prosthetics for humans. It was very challenging but Winter is thriving and using her new tail with great command. The word has gotten out about Winter. Visitors are traveling in droves to Clearwater to visit Winter who has become an inspiration to adults and children alike, especially to children who are amputees themselves. The tale doesn't end there. The special technology used for Winter's prosthetic tail is being used to develop prosthetics for Iraq war veterans who have especially sensitive injuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I saw this book at a book fair and thought it looked great. I ordered it for myself, because I love dolphins, and it is wonderful! I will share it with my students as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful story
This is a great story about a dolphin who was missing its tail fin and how caregivers managed to have a new one made. The story is very simple, written for mainly children.I was kind of hoping for a little more technical information, but the book was a wonderful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story for all ages.I love this book!
This book is everything that I thought and hoped it would be.It is poignant as it touches your heart in every aspect--taking us from the initial rescue through to a happy ending.I am a former teacher and I can see its value in reaching out to children and drawing them into the story--helping them to experience their own feelings while relating to Little Winter. As an introduction to the precarious world of innocent animals and their vulnerabilities, the book also shows how mankind can and does help. The pictures of all the different loving volunteers who pitch in wholeheartedly to help Winter are unforgettable.I have a few grandnieces and nephews who will find this true story every bit as wonderful a testament to good, caring people and sweet animals--as I do. I bought this book after I saw on PBS a brief mention of Winter's story.I decided to research it here on Amazon and learned enough that I went through with the purchase. It is everything I'd hoped it would be.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5/5 stars - an inspiring story!
A sucker for all of God's helpless creatures, when I heard about Winter's Tail, I decided to pick this book up from the library. It was such a touching story. For those of you who have not heard about this amazingly resilient dolphin, here is what actually happened.

On December 10, 2005 a baby dolphin, about 2-3 months old was spotted in Mosquito Lagoon, Florida with lobster trap ropes wrapped around it's tail and mouth. The fisherman who helped rescue the dolphin, later named "Winter" was Jim Savage. Realizing that the injuries to the creature were serious, he contacted fish and wildlife conservationists who responded and took the frightened, injured dolphin on a (3) hour journey to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to mend. Although, the dolphin did lose her tail, she was left with a stump which was later fitted with a prosthetic sleeve and tail enabling her to swim again. The last report I read indicated that Winter (4) years later is still thriving in her closely monitored environment. If you are ever in the Clearwater, FL area, you can visit Winter at the Aquarium.

The authors of this wonderful inspirational and beautifully illustrated book are Craig Hatkoffand his daughters Julianna and Isabella. RECOMMENDED - 4.5/5 stars ... Read more

I bought this book because my Fiancee and I were going on an Alaskan cruise and a whale watching excursion. I tought it would be a handy reference book, but it is a little bit too big to easily carry around with you. It has great photos and a lot of good information in it to help you identify what you just saw. It is a really nice book and I just like looking through it. The size didn't really matter, because we were too busy oohhing and aahhing when we saw Humpback whales and Pacific White-sided Dolphins to be flipping through the book anyway.

For a long time I have been searching for guides to help identify whales and dolphins in different parts of the world, but until recently there was very little practically-oriented literature available. In the last few years, that has changed and several groundbreaking regional identification guides are now available: for example Whales and Dolphins of the European Atlantic (Ocean Guides) and Whales & Dolphins of the North American Pacific: Including Seals and Other Marine Mammals. So the non-specialist or casual observer is now in with a fighting chance of identifying those dolphins seen on a coastal hike or whales encountered on a ferry crossing.

At the same time, several references on global marine mammals have appeared, of which Shirihai and Jarrett's compact guide is the best of the bunch. Why? First of all, this guide is compact. At under 400 pages, it is small enough to fit into a coat pocket, yet there is enough information to enable the user to identify (potentially) any marine mammal. So this volume is a true field guide. The book covers sirenians (manatees and dugongs), seals, coastal otters and other marine mammals as well as the cetaceans. The text is concise and emphasises key identification features, but there is still room for notes on behaviour and ecology. There are plenty of plates, both photographic and illustrated - all of them of very high quality. It is clear that author and artist have ample field experience have been able, through this book, to put this squarely at the disposal of the user. Finally, the book is printed on high quality glossy paper, which makes it a pleasure to leaf through at home.

So next time I am off on a trip with a chance of encountering whales or dolphins, I will be packing this handy guide in a addition to whatever regional guides I can get my hands on. Meanwhile, I am enjoying some armchair whale-watching as I leaf through the pages back home.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best field gude on this subject; and one of the best of any natural history field guide
There have been a plethora of field guides on marine mammals and most of them, including several recent ones, such as Carwardine's and the Welles', that are quite good. Shirihai and Jarrett's is in a class by itself. However, it is not really intended as a spotting guide for geographic locations. It illustrates and explains the different variations with all the species, has excellent and distinctive photgraphs, wonderful art work of all species and many variants, fine maps, tells of behavioral and diet diffences for various populations of the same species (and hints where there may be new species, or subspecies, to be found). It is the most comprehensive such guide on this, or almost any other, wildlife family and is at a bargain price, even if Amzn.com hasn't yet discounted it.Don't miss this book! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great nonfiction for toddlers
We bought this -and others in the series- to keep at our beach house on the gulf coast of Florida. Our kids are fascinated by the sea life down there.

The books have a combination of photos, text and illustrations. The photos are nice, clear shots, but don't always match the text perfectly which is why they add the illustrations. It works! Best of all, there is not too much information- just enough for a toddler/preschooler. My kids, 2 and 4, don't pick this every night, but it's definitely a regular in the mix.

Note- I thought the photos in the Dolphin book were less interesting than some of the other books.
The text in this book and the whale book are VERY similar...Ok, so a lot of the info is the same (they both live in pods, for example), but I think the author could have found a way to change them up.I would NOT recommend buying both. ... Read more

Product Description
Whales, dolphins, and porpoises have fascinated humankind for centuries. Amazingly diverse, they have evolved specializations that allow them, despite being air-breathing mammals, to exploit habitats ranging from surface waters to ocean depths. Whales and Dolphins of the World is a celebration of the variety (more than 80 species), behavior, and natural history of these remarkable animals. Stunningly illustrated by 180 color photographs, it describes what we know of their lives, including feeding, reproduction, communication, and social structures, and surveys the factors that affect them, from hunting to pollution. The book explores the strong relationship between our species and theirs, with a look at dolphin therapy and the pros and cons of whale-watching. It details the forces that threaten whales, dolphins, and porpoises, including hunting, whaling, fisheries, pollution, and habitat destruction, and also describes the conservation actions that must take place in the twenty-first century to save them. A color map of the world highlights the waters in which whales and dolphins are found.

Worldwide interest in these unique creatures is growing, as evidenced by the increasing number of people who go whale- and dolphin-watching each year. This book, with its informative, lively text and spectacular images, provides an illuminating look at the lives of whales and dolphins in a changing world. ... Read more

The lonely Dolphin

Will Mandy save bob or not?

Dolphin in the deep is a book about dolphins in a zoo that do talent shows and makes people laugh and cheer! The dolphin names are Bob and Bing. But one day Bob dies and Bing gets so lonely that he misses his brother and does not do the talent shows. Will Bing do the shows or not?

My favorite part of the book is when the dolphin dies and Mandy tries to help bob by telling Joel to jump in but it was too late. That was a sad part in the book. But I still enjoy that part in that part.

I think the author's purpose of writing this book Dolphin in the Deep is that you need to work together to try to save something you love.

My recommendation for Dolphin in the Deep is that it is a really good book because it is so interesting, there is always a problem and mandy is trying to save the problem or animal. Dolphin in the Deep is the best book I've read. I would give this book five stars.

Product Description
In November 2008 Patricia Cori was in Jordan teaching her world-renowned DNA Activation workshop when a life-changing event occurred. A community of Cetaceans—“a choir of whales and dolphins,” as she describes it—interrupted her talk with a frantic plea for help. Cori could suddenly see a devastating scene of suffering, a collective grieving of scores of whales and dolphins “frenzied, lost, and dying.” This was the first of numerous contacts, many of them followed, she would learn, by mass suicides.

This terrifying incident was also a dramatic call for change. In this moving book, Cori explains the immense potential for human beings to save these majestic creatures and, in the process, save ourselves and our world. For the first time, we read the communications of the Cetaceans, their story of devotion and love for the planet and for all of life. They and their ascended elders teach us about the galactic family of Cetaceans and how they weave the sounds of the Earth’s oceans, holding the planet’s emotional body in balance. Their communications echo the revelations of the author’s earlier works: life abounds in the Universe, a sea of vibrations and conscious waves of sound and light.

The message is clear: We must realize that our global behavior is altering the course of Gaia’s progression to the next dimension. Without the music of these species—without the whale and dolphin song—we face a dire future in which our destined higher consciousness cannot materialize. Before We Leave You is a roadmap to that higher future—if we act now.

The book includes eighteen exquisite, full-color detachable Cetacean meditation cards through which readers can reach resonance with the music of the Great Whales and Dolphin Beings.

5-0 out of 5 stars the BEST field guide for North Pacific cetaceans
This manual contains the technical information necessary for distinguishing similar species at sea. Numerous black-and-white photos show all important field characteristics. Detailed analysis of the field characteristics separating the various large Balaenopterids is especially useful. Species which have been recorded as accidental are also included. Updating information about the presence of Hyperoodon (or Indopacetus??) in Pacific waters near the equator would be useful, although photos of 'unidentified' Ziphidae are included. This is the only book I take out with me for field cruises.

4-0 out of 5 stars An useful guide
This is an excellent book for those who are looking for a guide for whalewatching. But it is more technical than the average, which is good in some cases. FOr me it was very useful when going to sea, because I wanted detailed information, but other people look only for pictures. Which is the only problem here, because they are all in black and white. ... Read more

Product Description

Shortly after the end of WWII, sixteen-year-old Erich Linden and his family have fled Germany and joined Erich's uncle, Klaus, in Venezuela, where they will begin a new life. But, en route to Klaus's outpost further inland, they encounter a storm and their plane crashes in the middle of the jungle. Stranded deep within Amazonia with no hope of rescue, they are discovered by the Yayomi, a violent and superstitious Stone Age tribe. The Yayomi believe the strangelooking foreigners are freshwater dolphins in human form—and the Lindens believe that as long as they can keep up the bizarre ruse they'll be safe. But the jungle is a dark, mysterious place, and no place for a family of sham dolphin-people who are ultimately left with only two choices: to escape or to die trying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent storytelling

This is a great novel, if your taste is in the imaginative, "old fashioned" type of fiction. Krol writes in a way which is very easy to read, and is a born storyteller, with some rather bizarre and surprising twists along the way. The story of a German family ending up in the Amazon jungle amongst a local tribe after WW 2 is quite innovative, and keeps your interest up to the last pages. It's rather difficult to categorize this novel in any genre. It's part of an adventure novel, part of "a boy growing into manhood" story. There are elements of satire in it, and Krol has quite an interesting - amusing, too - way of relating the so-called "civilized, western" culture habits into the "primitive" Amazonian tribal way of life. If I should compare this book to some other writer's works, then Kurt Vonnegut is a name that pops up for me. The way Krol tells the story by a young, teenage German boy's point of view reminds me somewhat of Mark Twain's Huck Finn. All in all, Torsten Krol is a name that is definitely worth to keep in mind for his future works.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
Not sure why the other 4 people have given this such a great review. In my opinion, this is probably the poorest book I've read all year. Ok, so you probably know what the gist of this tale is so let me just say that what ruined this for me other than the average writing and the rehashing of another "Jew/Nazi/South America" angle. This book was very poorly reaserched. The author has no clue about the tribes and the creatures that live in the rain forest and it really, really drove me nuts. I really wouldn't have cared if the story was original and/or beautifully written but this book was a mess. I wasted enough time with this. If you really feel the need to read this, get it used, don't pay full price for this. I will, though recommend alternative reading choices while you wait for the price to drop. "The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts", "Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord" "The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman " These books are all closely related with the same characters, so get all three. They're dirt cheap used as well.
I'm sure the author of "The Dolphin People" read these titles and tried to come close de Bernieres genius but fell miserably short.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
This is a really great book.I loved it and you will most definitely enjoy it as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
Since the other 2 reviews tell what it's about I'll just say I loved it.Once you start it you'll have a hard time putting it down.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dolphin People
In "The Dolphin People" Torsten Krol has created an unreal situation where a family of four has to survive in the Amazon with a tribe of local natives "The Yayomi" who believe they are dolphins in human form. Set in post WWII, the Erich Linden and family have come to Venezuela to join Uncle Klaus. Their plane crashes in a river, and they are discovered by the Yayomi and are revered as special because of their dolphin status. With little chance of getting back to society they try and assimilate into the native culture with the assistance of Gerhard, another German who has lived with the tribe for eleven years as research for a book. Krol has written this book through the eyes of sixteen-year-old Erich and we observe him grow and change while here. His family has their own issues to take care of. As events unfold we learn more and more about everyone. Some parts are a little disturbing. "The Dolphin People" is a challenging and strange book; yet an enjoyable one. ... Read more

Product Description

Although bats and dolphins live in very different environments, are vastly different in size, and hunt different kinds of prey, both groups have evolved similar sonar systems, known as echolocation, to locate food and navigate the skies and seas. While much research has been conducted over the past thirty years on echolocation in bats and dolphins, this volume is the first to compare what is known about echolocation in each group, to point out what information is missing, and to identify future areas of research.

Echolocation in Bats and Dolphins consists of six sections: mechanisms of echolocation signal production; the anatomy and physiology of signal reception and interpretation; performance and cognition; ecological and evolutionary aspects of echolocation mammals; theoretical and methodological topics; and possible echolocation capabilities in other mammals, including shrews, seals, and baleen whales. Animal behaviorists, ecologists, physiologists, and both scientists and engineers who work in the field of bioacoustics will benefit from this book.
