Product Description
Domestic violence is as ancient as the family unit itself. And according to the American Medical Association, one quarter of American women will be abused by an intimate partner at some point in their lives. Ministers can help care for these victims. Loving and sensitive support can make a tremendous difference to survivors as they struggle with the long and difficult process of healing and regaining trust in themselves and others. Often, however, pastoral caregivers possess the same misconceptions about domestic violence as does the uninformed public. Miles addresses the issues related to inadequate pastoral response to this pervasive problem. He explores the dynamics of abusive relationships and the role which clergy members can take to heal this painful situation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST for all Pastors/Ministers
This book is so helpful to all who might have the opportunity to minister to anyone who might be a victim of domestic violence. We are all so ignorant. The author has such insight. Please add this to your library!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
The title alone is practically flooring.I though it would be extremely imperative for pastors and ministers across the country to be enlightened on this sensitive subject, so I purchased a copy for my pastor. Please take the time to read not only this one, but Violence in Families; what every Christian needs to know...

4-0 out of 5 stars Read the Title! Read the Book!
Every pastor and church leader desperately needs to read this book! The book shows how you can be part of the solution to save lives instead of giving advice as a church leader that could lead to the death of women and children in your own community.
I have a four-year theology degree, have served in excellent church and parachurch ministries around the US & the world, and know first-hand the ignorance and faulty teaching on Domestic Violence by many church leaders.
Rev. Al Miles does an excellent job providing research results from a variety of church leaders and victims of Domestic Violence. Miles looks at what "really goes on" and how churches often contribute to the abuse of women.
Miles does more than prop up a skeleton of statistics...he fleshes out the facts.
Domestic Violence is at such epidemic levels that it's time for church leaders to: a) Stop denying its existence, b) Pull their heads out of the sands of bias against suffering women, and c) Educate themselves on Domestic Violence from experts such as Al Miles. Rev. Miles' book is an excellent start in raising your awareness of Domestic Violence.
Sincerely, Joel Francis, ThM

5-0 out of 5 stars Really, every pastor NEEDS to know this information
It's refreshing to hear about domestic violence from a male perspective. It's especially refreshing to read about it from a male minister's prospective. Rev. Al Miles does several important things in this vital resource: he defines domestic violence and presents helpful information about its prevalence; he addresses the very real concerns, fears, and spiritual struggles of victims/survivors; he provides excellent exegetical work on some of those difficult Biblical passages that abusers often use to excuse their violence (or worse, to "prove" that it's sanctioned by God); and he offers hope. Reading this book should be required of every minister--it's that vital to the Christian church and, more importantly, the people we serve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Domestic Violence What Every Pastor Needs to Know tells it like it really is.It offers great beginning advice on pastor and church care of victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. It confronts mis-used scripture. It is easy to read.I think it would be an excellent required text book for Christian Seminary students. ... Read more

Product Description

Each year, about 33 percent of all women and 3 percent of all men murdered in the United States, are killed by a so-called intimate, a spouse, partner, or lover. Nationwide, murder by an intimate is the number one cause of death for pregnant women. And murder by an intimate is not just an American problem. A European task force recently found domestic violence accounts for 25 percent of all homicides in London, and 35 percent across England and Wales. In this timely book, van Wormer and Roberts describe the problem, and what they have seen and heard on the front lines with both women and men who have escaped domestic violence that was escalating toward deadly levels. The text examines not only the psychology of the batterer but of domestic murder, and domestic murder-suicide. Drawn from the experience and insights of these two widely-known social workers, the text includes a safety plan for those at risk and a chapter providing narratives of women in prison for killing their abusive husband or partner.

Drawing on the experience and insights of these two widely-known social workers, Death by Domestic Violence separates domestic violence myths and facts, explains the traumatic bonding that occurs between batterer and victim, and details how one facet of the solution could be school-based interventions and education. The book culminates with recommendations for further reduction of harm and a safety plan for those at risk.

Product Description

The new Third Edition of Domestic Violence: The Criminal Justice Response offers a thorough and major revision of one of the top books in the field of domestic violence and is the only text to focus on criminal justice responses which provide a detailed look inside the criminal justice system. Domestic Violence is unique in its emphasis on the victim's perspective, including the victim's needs as well as preferences for and satisfaction with intervention. It documents the diversity of victims and how this diversity affects their service needs and the impact of interventions, including unanticipated consequences of current aggressive efforts. It also looks at diversity among batterers and how these differences affect the success of various intervention strategies.

The Third Edition includes a wealth of new empirical research on how the criminal justice system's responses to domestic violence have changed in the last several years. As prominent authorities in the field, the authors offer a balanced view and critical analysis of the current and potential impact of these changes as well as of the new data and findings. In accordance with the sweeping changes undertaken by the criminal justice system, the text includes significant expansion of coverage on efforts made by prosecutors' offices and courts as well as strategies to protect victims through victim advocacy and other services.

For the last decade, Domestic Violence: The Criminal Justice Response has been a key reference for law schools, police departments, legal practitioners, and policymakers as well as students and researchers in the fields of Criminal Justice, Criminology, Women's Studies, Family Law, Sociology, Psychology, and Social Work/Counseling. This volume is an essential addition to curriculums, libraries, and reference resources serving this important area of both study and practice.

Product Description
Help ease the secret suffering of lesbians in abusive relationships!

Why is woman-on-woman violence so often ignored or discounted? Intimate Betrayal: Domestic Violence in Lesbian Relationships uncovers the hidden problem of lesbians who hurt the women they love. This long-needed book brings together theory, practice, and research to suggest new and fruitful ways to understand, prevent, and treat this common problem.

Intimate Betrayal provides new empirical research into the psychological and sociocultural causes of abuse. As several of the chapter authors demonstrate, neither traditional feminist theories about power nor heterosexist paradigms explain the causes, dynamics, or treatment of this problem. However, the new research presented here suggests helpful diagnostic criteria and effective treatments.

Intimate Betrayal analyzes the factors that contribute to lesbian domestic violence, including:

  • heterosexism and homophobia
  • minority stress
  • emotional isolation and lack of community ties
  • revictimization of women who have previously suffered abuse
The thorough literature review included reveals the paucity of attention that has been paid to this problem. Intimate Betrayal suggests exciting new models for freeing women from domestic violence, including the use of clinical and community resources and liberation theology. Community activists, counselors, and psychologists will be intrigued by the insightful analysis of the root causes of lesbian-on-lesbian violence and the valuable treatment suggestions. Researchers will welcome the new avenues it opens for additional research. ... Read more

Product Description
Domestic violence, a serious and far-reaching social problem, has generated two key debates among researchers. The first debate is about gender and domestic violence. Some scholars argue that domestic violence is primarily male-perpetrated, others that women are as violent as men in intimate relationships. Johnson's response to this debate--and the central theme of this book--is that there is more than one type of intimate partner violence. Some studies address the type of violence that is perpetrated primarily by men, while others are getting at the kind of violence that women areinvolved in as well. Because there has been no theoretical framework delineating types of domestic violence, researchers have easily misread one another's studies.

The second major debate involves how many women are abused each year by their partners. Estimates range from two to six million. Johnson's response once again comes from this book's central theme. If there is more than one type of intimate partner violence, then the numbers depend on what type you're talking about.

Johnson argues that domestic violence is not a unitary phenomenon. Instead, he delineates three major, dramatically different, forms of partner violence: intimate terrorism, violent resistance, and situational couple violence. He roots the conceptual distinctions among the forms of violence in an analysis of the role of power and control in relationship violence and shows that the failure to make these basic distinctions among types of partner violence has produced a research literature that is plagued by both overgeneralizations and ostensibly contradictory findings. This volume begins the work of theorizing forms of domestic violence, a crucial first step to a better understanding of these phenomena among scholars, social scientists, policy makers, and service providers. ... Product Description
"...compelling reading for anyone working with women and children living with and leaving domestic violence." - From the Foreword by Cathy Humphreys. Women who leave an abusive relationship often experience feelings of fear, bewilderment, anger and confusion. The trauma caused by domestic violence leaves a legacy that stays with the survivor, and it is not uncommon for women to experience feelings of loss and grief similar to those following bereavement, but made more complex by the effect that abuse has had on their emotional health and well-being. "Supporting Women after Domestic Violence" offers accessible advice on how to enable women who have experienced domestic violence to embark on a journey of recovery. The book draws on theory, original research and the personal experiences of women who have encountered domestic violence to explore the complex practical and emotional support they need when engaging in the process of recovery. It highlights the difficulties a victim of domestic violence may encounter following an abusive relationship, offers action points to improve service provision, and covers important issues in recovery, such as the value of mutual support and how women can regain a sense of normality and self-esteem. This book will be a key resource for those working within women's refuges, as well as social workers, counsellors, mental health professionals and many others whose work may bring them into situations where domestic violence is an issue. ... Product Description
Domestic violence does not begin the day an adult heterosexual male decides to beat and batter an adult heterosexual female. Domestic violence is a complicated and multifaceted enigma that includes child, sibling, spousal, intimate partner, and elder abuse. Despite spending billions of dollars on domestic violence, the number of some categories of victims remains the same. The problem can be traced back to our very definitions of victim and abuse. Until we open our eyes to the blatant empirical evidence and come to some agreement on a basic platform, this pervasive crime will not diminish.

Domestic Violence: Intervention, Prevention, Policies, and Solutions presents a rational and reasoned perspective that emphasizes evidence-based information rather than ideologically held beliefs. It challenges the effectiveness of existing policies and procedures and introduces 10 recommendations for change. The book summarizes many important federally sponsored reports and provides unique meta-analysis styled empirically based overviews of contemporary research and intervention efforts. It also supplies print and web-based national and state specific resources and references to studies and organizations that will be updated online.

Topics addressed include historical and current explanations of battering behavior, the importance of the accurate and unbiased identification of victims, differences and the implications of those differences in reporting rape and sexual assault, and the understanding of risk factors. It considers the fallacy of ideological advocacy and presents legislation and policies in Colorado and California as cases in point. In particular the author explores the prevailing notion of the predominance of female victimization over male victimization.
Injecting a voice of reason into a highly emotional debate, this outstanding volume clarifies our convenient delusions and allows us to re-appraise this sensitive issue and effect a positive and progressive outcome. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm not the right audience for this book
Woman Submit / 978-0-9794293-0-9

My first marriage, at a young age and in a tightly knit Christian community, was marked by physical abuse. Many years later, I was intrigued by the premise of this book - that Christian women are especially prone to stay in abusive relationships due to the pervasive doctrines within their communities: that marriage is eternal (and divorce and remarriage are sinful) regardless of abusive circumstances, that women *want* to be abused in order to get a 'get out of marriage free' card (yes, I'd read that James Dobson quote during my marriage, and found it painful and unhelpful in the extreme), and that abuse is just something that you have to leave to God to fix. I was interested to see how another woman in a similar circumstance had coped with these issues, and what she had to say to the community around her.

Despite my high expectations for this slim volume, I cannot personally recommend this book, as it is written from such a widely different perspective from my own that I actually found it quite infuriating. Andersen begins her book with her own personal testimony of abuse, highlighting a point in her life when her husband beat her near unto death, and denied her medical care for fear of being arrested. The only way Andersen could convince him to leave her alone in the house with a phone was to swear "a vow before God" that she would not call the police (and, apparently by extension, the hospital). In her own words:

"Then he left again. But now I had another problem. I had just made a vow before God that I would not call the police. I stared at the phone and mentally worked through my options - breaking my vow was not one of them...I was confident that God was leading. John returned after being gone only a short while and made a point of looking to see if the phone had been moved. It had not. I had returned it exactly as he left it."

Luckily, John finally leaves again, and Andersen manages to get her pastor's cell phone - the pastor is in the neighborhood and takes her to the hospital, nicely circumventing Andersen's 'vow problem'. Later in the chapter, Andersen will marvel at people who pity her for being 'stupid', and doesn't seem to put together that at least *some* of those people are actually pitying her for thinking her god cares more about a promise made under duress to an abuser rather than her own personal, physical safety. I'm sure Andersen feels that God protected her because of her fidelity, but how many other women have made the same choice only to die needlessly when their husbands return in a rage or their internal injuries take their toll? (Andersen insists that her internal injuries were miraculously healed by God.)

Throughout the book, Andersen keeps up the heavy-handed approach of insisting that her view of religion is the correct one, and that anyone with a different viewpoint is simply wrong. She sneers at research done on Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) and while I take her point that the diagnosis has been misused and should be handled with more care, I cannot bear such sanctimonious passages as "And although it may come as a complete surprise, psychologists are NOT the experts on the human condition - Jesus Christ our creator is." I really cannot bear that attitude - she can't believe that her god may have made us with the knowledge and insight to understand our own minds and thought processes, no. Simply, she disagrees with those godless psychologists out there and god is on HER side, of course, so they *must* be wrong, Q.E.D.

Personally, although I think it may come as a complete surprise, mathematicians are NOT the experts on the physical laws of our universe - Cthulhu the Great Old One is. Take that, math profs of my yesteryears.

In all seriousness, as a woman who has experienced both an abuse marriage and the oppressive 'submission' advice of a well-meaning, but fundamentally disconnected Christian community, I think there is some good advice in Andersen's testimony. She urges readers not to succumb to victim-blaming and to remain open and helpful to women in abusive relationships rather than to write them off as perpetual victims. Outside of the immediate counseling, however, Andersen's book falters and fails - I have no interest in a book that discounts psychology completely in the search for answers and instead devotes literally *pages* to "Adam and Eve" (here treated as real, historical figures) and why their personal family troubles are to blame for domestic violence in this day and age. To me, personally, that makes as much sense as trying to blame marital problems on Thor and Sif.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOPE for Christian Women in Domestic Abuse
I just finished reading this book.It is EXCELLENT.The author did an absolutely fantastic job of communicating much needed and powerful truth in a readable style.I read it in a couple hours straight through (but I'm also a crazy reader!) and I like the fact that it is not so weighty that a person in abuse would be overwhelmed by it.

This book clearly and simply -- and compassionately -- reveals the seriousness of domestic abuse in the Christian church and shares God's answers for those walking in it.

And the Scripture throughout was what I needed personally right now, so that's an extra thank you.;-)

This book is an important element in bringing hope, help and healing to women who've been given a death sentence by the church.I STRONGLY recommend it to anyone who knows someone experiencing abuse, to church leaders and counselors everywhere, and to those who are walking through abuse in their own life.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was hard reading the book
It was hard reading this book.I have trouble reading stuff like this. She writes well.I'm sure it had to have been painful to relive the ordeal in some ways to put it into print.I know it's painful whenever I tell my own story sometimes. What I'm about to say is not meant to be an attack against the author.Sometimes it's hard to convey one's thoughts online where someone cannot hear the tone of voice, etc.She went through a horrible experience and I actually like her spunk. She's a strong woman.

I think the author is stretching some of the scripture to allow for divorce.I have been looking into scripture for years for an out in my own case.I divorced my own abusive husband almost ten years ago after being separated from him nearly four years.I looked and looked for a biblical out, but saw none that wouldn't force me to either live in solitude or else remarry and live in adultery.Jesus said very plainly that if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man that she commits adultery. If I remarry while my biblical husband is still alive, I will be living in unrepentant sin and will go to hell because adulterers and adulteresses will not inherit the kingdom of heaven.I don't understand why God didn't allow an out for women like myself who are being abused, but He didn't.I am 32-years old and will never know the love of a Christian husband.I get really angry that my life is so useless.

Reading the book was hard for me because stuff like this is sometimes a trigger.I've suffered from PTSD for years.I'm better these days, but still have effects at times.I made it through the book okay after having to take a few breathers.

Some women are addicted perhaps to the abuser. In my case, I knew what he was about and wanted out pretty much immediately, but when I pulled out the Bible and read what it said about divorce, I pretty much saw that I was caught in a no win situation.I was only 17 years old and I was then provided with the choice of staying with my abusive husband or to separate and live the rest of my life alone with no family ever as the only two options that were in line with God's will in regards to marriage.

In my case, it wasn't even the typical battered pattern with the honeymoon phase and such.I got married and days afterwards he told me that he was going to make the days with my father seem the most pleasurable and the beatings and abuse began. The only breaks I got from the abuse were when he went to work or went to be with someone else like friends, family, or to try and convince his ex-gf to come back with him. About a couple months after we were married, he asked me how I'd feel if he divorced me and went back with her.I was 17 and already my dreams of having a loving family were ruined.

My husband was a lot older than I.I had never dated and was a virgin when I met him.He soon would end that part.I didn't want to be with him and he didn't care.He told me from the start that I was his and if he couldn't have me then no one else would.I read the Bible and found where if a man seduces a virgin who wasn't engaged that he was to marry her, so I had to marry him.I had kept telling him I didn't want to do it because it was a sin to have sex when you weren't married. He didn't care and did whatever he wanted to me.I then figured I needed to hurry up and marry him then because he was going to have sex on me whether I wanted or not and I didn't want to keep sinning. Then I was hoping that he would end up dying sometime during the marriage so I could be free of him and not have to have him touch me anymore.

No one helped me.I kept trying to get help, but no one cared.I was blamed before the marriage for the sexual stuff and I kept trying to tell people that I had told him I didn't want to do it and he kept doing it anyway. He told me he wasn't going to leave and that I was his.I had no idea what to do.I was only 16 when it started and had absolutely no experience dealing with that and he was older by almost 11 years and did what he wanted.I was really scared of him.Terrified more like it.

During the marriage he had on occasion did things up to beating me against a wall, medicine cabinet, heater.I think he had poisoned me because for a while I was really sick and he insisted on cooking.I even had white streaks on my fingernails and had trouble walking. He wouldn't let me go to the doctor at times and told me he would tell me when I needed to see a doctor. The pilot lights on the gas stove kept getting blown out for about two to three weeks around same time as when he'd go to work and I'd be sleeping.I'd wake to the smell of gas.It mysteriously stopped after I mentioned that the pilot lights kept getting blown out.It was after then when he kept cooking the meals and I'd be getting sick with white on my fingernails. He was going to set fire to me the day of the Oklahoma City bombing.I had been watching it on the news and was getting ready to go to the college and was brushing my teeth.I didn't end up getting the toothpaste rinsed out like I thought and when I got home from school he was there and he went off on me.He ended up penning me on the bed and telling me he was going to make love to me and burn the clothes off my body.I was screaming and crying and wanting someone to help me, but I was alone as usual.I had tried getting police to assist me before, but my husband was a government employee and was on first name basis with the cops. They refused to help and thought it was amusing that I'd even tried getting them to do so.And what I went through to get away from him was an even bigger ordeal than what I went through while I was living with him.

But after my baby girl was born, I couldn't stay.I didn't want him to hurt her.I sinned and disobeyed God to keep my daughter safe from her father. He ended up with visitation rights though and ended up abusing her to get at me and the only way to protect her it seemed was to go with him and take care of her myself during the visitations. After I filed for divorce though, he wouldn't allow me to do that anymore and just kept abusing her. Before I filed, he had even grabbed my pepperspray and was going to spray her with it.She was about five months old at the time. Some of it got on her and she was screaming in pain and I grabbed her up and yelled at him.His cop buddies refused to do a thing to him about it though. My ex is now a RN working at a VA hospital.I'm so glad I'm not a veteran.

The book seemed to indicate that a lot of women stayed because they were addicted to their husbands.Like I said, I know that wasn't the case with me.In my case, I tried to take it and keep the marriage vows until death do one of us part.I didn't want to go against God.After my daughter was born though, I put her before God and got her out of there as best as I could.

I have never understood the proverb about acknowledging God and He'd direct your path. That's a theme in this book.I've heard that before, but it's never made sense. When I've tried using the Bible to solve my problems, all I get are words of hopelessness it seems. And I've tried getting God to tell me what He wanted me to do before and I'm still waiting years later I guess.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to victim/suvivors of domestic abuse in a Christian context.
Gives sound advice for Christian victims of domestic abuse. The author has survived and been set free from horrendous abuse and explains how she did it, with God's grace. Her own story is mind boggling. She discusses the problem of 'addiction' to an abusive spouse well, without in any way blaming the victim. Very helpful.Woman Submit! Christians & Domestic Violence

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, Beautifully Presented
This book forces open the door on a subject so many would rather avoid than face head on. It has never been acceptable to look away when someone is being harmed, yet we see that attitude all the time when it comes to spousal abuse. Victims of domestic violence are so often misunderstood because of the effects that abuse has on them. Women subject to the control and violent abuses of their spouses lose their dignity, self-respect, and spirituality. They need support from their community, not criticism.
Simply written, this book forces us to take a very honest look at ourselves and how we view (or choose not to see) this subject. It is so easy to pretend and avoid rather than face the ugly truth. This very moving book provides enough clarity to help us all have the strength we need to be honest and ultimately supportive of those who need it most.

Product Description
The responses of social services to child abuse arising in the context of domestic violence remain some of the most contentious and controversial in this area. This report explores the problems and opportunities presented for child protection workers responding to child abuse that occurred in the context of violence towards the child(ren)'s mother. This particular aspect of domestic violence intervention is frequently overlooked as issues such as policing, child contact, interagency working and offender programmes have gained precedence in the development of intervention strategies. The report recognizes the difficulties of developing sensitive child welfare practice in an area where there has been a traditional separation of services for women and services for children, and provides good practice examples for overcoming the traditional difficulties in this area. ...
