What should public prosecutors do when victims withdraw support for domestic violence prosecutions? The answer to this question that motivates the investigation undertaken in this book defends the claim that (other things being equal) domestic violence prosecutors should respond as feminists.

This claim is intended as a provocative formulation of the proposition that domestic violence prosecutors should act for reasons generated by the value of reconstituting communities as less patriarchal.

This thesis is defended first by developing a general theory of prosecutorial practical reasoning, and then by considering the prosecution of domestic violence offences in particular. Along the way, this book provides an original account of the nature of prosecutorial action, the values that can be realized through such action, and the relationship between these values and the practical reasoning of criminal prosecutors.

Moreover, it provides original analyses of two key concepts, domestic violence and patriarchy, and explains the relevance of the latter to a proper understanding of the former.

thoughtful and well-written
This lively and well-written book examines the roles and responsibilities of the prosecutor in domestic violence cases.Applying a feminist, and criminological lens to this complex issue, the author masterfully crosses and combines a range of literature and fields of inquiry to build her case.Unlike so much legal scholarship (and some feminist theory), this is accessible and easy to read. It should be welcomed by practitioners, scholars and students.I certainly learned a lot!

The Dominance of Ideology in the American Response to Domestic Violence
Working daily, as I do, with victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse: male, female, adult, and child, and responding to the destructive behaviors and destructive effects of human hurtfulness, as counselor, therapist, educator, trainer and consultant, in my office, in homes, and in court as expert witness, I am all too familiar with the thesis apparently defended in this monograph, according to it's descriptions here and elsewhere. The thesis is painfully relevent because of the daily damage it does in the form of statutes, public agency rules of administrative procedure, and operational policies. Priced at $110.00, the relevance of this particular defense of the thesis is likely to be limited. Unless, of course, American political office holders make the unlikely choice to use it as a text with which to challenge and dismantle the public policies that subject so many women, children and men to it's destructive consequences each day. On the political left, this thesis, in practice, is an analog of the ideology on the political right that replaced science and simple facts in the George Bush administration. It is often pointed out that every 15 seconds a woman is assaulted in the United States by a household or family member. I have yet to see it pointed out, and explained, that every 15 seconds she, her relationships with the perpetrator and their children, if they are parents, are subjected to the destructive responses of ideological structures of policy and practice that dominate public and private response to domestic abuse and that have been constructed since the 1970's in accordance with the ideology apparently defended in this book.

Domestic Violence and Patriarchy
This author is an absolute disaster for Justice. Any officer of the law who enters a courtroom as a politician, i. e. in the service of a political dogma (or "correctness"), in this case "as a feminist", would act like Roland Freisler in his "Volksgerichtshof": an Aryan against a Jew. Politcal beliefs are just what must not and never enter any court!
And, even the claim that Domestic Violence can only be explained through the study of Patriarchy" is one of the many claims of false science with which exactly feminism has blessed us - because of its ideological and dogmatic basis.
Justice can only be based on Equality - Equality can only be in seeing all sides in the same value and right. If feminists wish to be true to their proclaimed aim of Equality between the sexes, they must give up all claims of their own superiority. I would like to remind here of the late Andrea Dworkin who nearly got lynched in a "feminist" meetin in Carnegie Hall in 1972, when she, very correctly, said that "every claim of one sex to be suoerior of the other is very close to Hitlers assumption of races".

Robert Geffner is a professor of psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology (and the editor of the Haworth book series on maltreatment), Peter Jaffe the director of the London Family Court Clinic in Ontario, Canada and Marlies Sudermann clinical professor at the University of Western Ontario Department of Psychology. There are 36 contributors from nursing, social work , law, psychology and education, but medicine seems to have been left our, inspite of family violence being an interdisciplinary field. A sensitive treatment of a tough subject
This is not an easy subject to put into a children's book form and William Bentrim does an admirable job of opening the door in a non-threatening way. This is accomplished through use of anthropomorphic characters, simple yet engaging illustrations and the tone of the writing. The book seems best suited for younger children rather than teens, and the front and back messages are targeted to adults. This suggests it will be most helpful in a setting where there is adult support available or involved. This book could help a child in domestic abuse situation feel like they're not alone or the only one experiencing such a thing.

What more can I say but wow!
William Bentrim's book Mommy's Black eye is a masterpiece.
Domestic Violence happens more then we like to know about it.

Perfect for counselors and parents alike
As an elementary school counselor, it is difficult to find material to present serious issues such as domestic violence in a way that is both educational and supportive. Bentrim provides just that. The clearly written story and pictures in Mommy's Black Eye helps to introduce the sensitive topic while providing opportunities for further exploration.

One thing that I truly appreciate is the additional resources provided in the back of the book. Knowing that there is support for this type of problem and knowing that you are not the only once experiencing the pain of domestic violence is both comforting and a step towards recovery.

A book that handles a sensitive issue
William Bentrim's book Mommy's Black eye: Children Dealing with Domestic Violence handles an issue that most people don't or can't seem to talk about. The author does it with sensitivity and clarity for both adults and their children who may be caught in this situation. This would be a great book for women's shelters to keep on hand as they counsel and help individuals both younger and older.

Read with a critical eye
Overall, a good book to explore both the benefits and potential pitfalls of applying semiotics to the study of history. Wexler provides good insights as well as a number of highly questionable interpretations (particularly of the photographs on the Olympia).If read with a critical eye, the reader will profit from being forced to examine the potential importance of images on our perception of history.

Power and art are not separate
Wexler writes clearly, skillfully interspersing history, sociology, and photography to argue that domesticity was some CREATED, not just "always there" in the US.Wexler especially emphasized the role of photography in supporting a discourse of white women's purity and black slave women's (or newly freed black women's) down-to-earth, animal nature.An excellent book for all students of art, social science, or history, this text can be used for undergraduates or graduate students. ... This book is very useful. It helps you to identify different kinds of abuse that perhaps you have been in denial of. Gives excellent tips on how to get save and stay safe. Also teaches how to move on to a new relationship without falling into the same or similar abusive relationship.

Absolutely a life-saver I'm so thankful
For ANYONE who is a relationship that is abusive (although it takes a while to accept that..) PLEASE get this book. I'm a survivor of domestic abuse and this book has been a real source of comfort and a very practical guide to handling this very delicate, frightening, confusing and life-changing experience. I still refer to it for guidance when emotions or situations come up as a result of the abuse.

Regaining Ownership
This book is absolutely a MUST READ for anyone who had endured any type of abuse and is starting their life over. I have found it extremely helpful in getting a clear picture of what to do with all of this scrambled mess I am left with after leaving an abusive relationship. LOVE IT!

Great Book For Survivors
I bought this book after initially buying Healing the Trauma of Domestic Violence: A workbook for women, and Why Does He Do That?: Inside the minds of angrey and controlling men. The later book I found very helpful and the author highly recommended THIS book. As the other workbook wasn't really meeting all my needs I decided to give this one a try.

This one is much better as it is quick and to the point, and speaks in a more simple lauguage. The other work book I bought was helpful but a little too clinical for me. If I were to recommend any books to a woman recovering from a violent relationship I would recommend this one, and Why Does He Do That?
