Product Description
This is a one-of-a-kind source book on drug prevention for schools, parents, and communities.First, the major drugs and effects are discussed, along with the addiction cycle. Then, solutions are discussed from the standpoint of the school, family, and community.Aftercare activities are presented to prevent relapse. At the end of the book, various programs and resources are outlined. The model presented for schools was a result of a year-long, multi-disciplinary project in schools. It was chosen as the model used by the Western Center for Drug-Free Schools in 9 western states. In addition, this text was used as a model to obbtain federal grant monies which established a multi-disciplinary drug prevention program for grades K-12 in a community that used to be drug-ridden.This was followed by an award-winningtraining project for parents and professionals learning together. The next step was to establish a community coalition involving schools, parents, police, businesses, apartment complexes, churches and youth leadership. This coalition is still thriving.

All of the above activities reflect the solid foundation established in the book, "Creating Drug-Free Schools and Communities:A Comprehensive Approach" and put into practice by its authors.Any dedicated community can use this text to guide them in creating a safer environment for families. ... Product Description
"Children of Prenatal Substance Abuse" presents practical and important information on working with children who were exposed to drugs prenatally. The author begins by defining what is meant by substance abuse and how it affects the entire family, not just the child, and then provides detailed information on the effects of cocaine and alcohol on developing children and adolescents. Intervention strategies are presented which are tailored to the specific needs of cocaine-exposed and/or alcohol-exposed children. Emphasis is placed on early intervention with the family as the most effective treatment model. Information on prevention and sources for educational material are also included. This book should be of interest to speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and early interventionists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up
I like this quite a bit. I think it is smart and not corny, not condescending.I plan to use it in teaching students prevention of alcohol and other drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will recommend this - satisfied with outcome
I wrote PCAT twice, the first time, I used 4 different books including Kaplan but had a 60+. I used only this book for the second test and had an 80+. I would recommend this book especially because I think it goes into the most important topics and does a very good job for Organic Chemistry(unlike Kaplan).
I still use it for my prepharm Organic chemistry, anatomy and physiology courses; since it gives a good overview and summary. Hope review helps!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it's printed on...
After taking the practice test given in this book, I have lost ALL faith in McGraw-Hill. About 1/4 of the math problems are patently incorrect (ie: 1x2=4 - Part of Problem 14 in the math section). They make numerous simple errors or do not even list the correct answer within the four possible answers provided. It is clear that this book was never proof-read or fact-checked, as all sections display numerous mistakes that really detract from its credibility. The organic chemistry section is simply a list of 133 different reactions and what they accomplish, and really gives very little of the fundamental information necessary to understand them. If you are looking for a good O-Chem review, you will not find it here. The biology section is acceptable, but not nearly as good as Kaplan's. I would strongly suggest against purchasing this product. ... Read more
