2-0 out of 5 stars Sure it's cheap, but it'll make your eyes bleed
Full disclosure - I haven't tried any recipes yet, but as soon as I started actually reading this thing several severe limitations prompted me to put up a review.First of all - the formatting is awful. It's hard to tell where one recipe ends and where another begins.Everything runs together and it's easy to get lost on the page. This is a fundamental problem in a cookbook. There is no table of contents, just a bunch of recipes sorted alphabetically by name in a huge text file.So good luck finding what you're looking for -- 'chicken caccitore' is in the "C"s while 'hunter's chicken' is with the "H"s -- even though they're closely related dishes.Lastly, this goes from aggravation to insult because of the large-font advertising of the publishers website. Not just any advertising, mind you, but big blue (on the PC) letters randomly placed on EVERY SINGLE PAGE.Sometimes it's in between recipes, sometimes it's in the middle of a recipe.I already paid for it, why are you still advertising to me?All of the recipes seem to be exported from Master Cook, so I'm guessing that you could find them all online with the help of Google and some research time.I picked it up because I figured I can't go wrong with a 99-cent cookbook, but now I know that it is indeed possible.Giving it two stars only because there might be a good recipe in here... if I could only find it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars ok for recipes
This book is ok if you just want a list of recipes. It doesn't say anything about setting up the fire or conditioning the dutch ovens. It just says: put some coals underneath and on top; or put on stove or in oven.In the later part of the book, most recipes include items that are already pre-made - in cans or in pouches - not really what I'm looking for (and it doesn't even list them specifically). This would have gotten 2 stars if it weren't for the chapter on 'special seasonings'.All that chapter does is offer a list of seasoning ingredients for $100 - pathetic. ... Product Description
From the birth of our nation, Dutch Ovens have been an integral and versatile part of Americana. Sadly, today’s high-tech hustle-and-bustle lifestyle has all but forgotten the art of “leather-glove cuisine.” The coal-black cast iron ovens appear outdated, unfriendly, and forbidding. Interestingly however, with seven simple secrets revealed, the beginning camp cook and the consummate backyard chef can utilize these forgotten friends to produce a marvelous and unforgettable variety of succulent delicacies.

Dutch Ovens owned by cooks who understand their subtleties are kept in places of honor, sanctuaries reserved specifically for them. On the other hand, ovens owned by cooks who can’t seem to keep the potatoes from burning to the bottom or who can never get the chicken to look anything but a pasty white, are quickly relegated to some obscure location where they will be “out of the way.” For the unsuccessful current user, the interested but uninitiated, or anyone who just wants to cook better, the seven secrets outlined below will provide a firm foundation for the creation and consumption of mouth-watering Dutch Oven meals fit for even the most discriminating palates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, tasty recipes
I don't know what I was expecting with Dutch cuisine when I tried some recipes from this book but it sure wasn't what came out in the final product!I was surprised to read about the Indian influence on Dutch food from Colonial times.I was also surprised to see the Dutch use meatballs in their stews.

I made the Vegetable soup with meatballs, following the recipe to the letter, and it came out absolutely mouth watering! For the main dish I selected Traditional Hotchpotch with Chuck and the meat fell off the bone.It turned out to be a stew but it was very tasty nonetheless.

The spiral-bound recipe books from many countries are loaded with authentic ethnic recipes along with historical notes that are worth the time to read. The history gives a great background to the excellent food you're about to prepare.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional and popular recipes
Dandy Dutch Recipes, in the popular recipe-card file size Stocking Stuffer format, is chock-full of the best recipes and notes about Dutch culture. This book was compiled by Mina Baker-Roelofs, distinguished home economist and Dutch heritage scholar, and Carol Van Klompenburg, author of our Delightfully Dutch and Dutch Treats. Traditional and popular recipes of foods enjoyed by families of Dutch extraction. Dandy Dutch Recipes also features the Hindeloopen drawings of Sallie Haugen DeReus. Her decorative floral designs are reminiscent of Norwegian rosemaling. The cover features tulips in full color.

Dandy Dutch Recipes also contains an array of information on Dutch-American culture. language and sites. Notes on Dutch Sites and Events make this book a must for chefs and tourists alike.

The Dutch specialties included are wonderful! Dutch Lettuce Salad is a popular traditional recipe. This goes well with Pea Soup and Hutspot (vegetables with chuck or rib roast). Cheese Sticks and Dutch Twists are great finger foods for any party. The Herring Salad makes for a deliciously healthy meal. The Dutch Birthday Cake will fill the Birthday boy or girl with delight!

Dandy Dutch Recipes is excellent for personal collections and as a memento for those interested inDutch-American traditions!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great of a series
I really enjoy CeeDub's work... both print and video shows. His books are more than typical cookbooks. His personality is felt on nearly every page with anecdotes and his descriptions about the recipes. Many times, his explanation of how many of the recipes got their names bring on images of adventure. CeeDub's books are simply down to earth and absent of a pretentious style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A reader friendly account of the technological advancements
Outdoor cooking was a necessity for colonists newly arrived on America's wilderness shores, pioneers moving west, cowboys working the range, sheep herders up in the hills, buffalo hunters out on the prairie, and anyone else who found themselves far from the villages, towns, and cities of a growing American populace. These folk needed something portable to cook their food in. Iron casters solved their problem with a metal cooking vessel particular suited to cabins, campfires, wagon trains, camping trails, and chuck wagons -- they called it the "Dutch Oven". John G. Ragsdale is an expert on the development, care, and use of Dutch ovens, and in Dutch Oven Chronicled: Their Use In The United States, he lays out a thoroughly "reader friendly" account of the technological advancements that resulted in the creation and wide spread use of this particular cooking vessel. This 112-page condensed history is nicely enhanced with 9 illustrations and 24 b/w photos, several Dutch Oven recipes, observations and recommendations based on the author's personal familiarity with the use of these ovens. Dutch Ovens Chronicled is an informed and informative work that is commended for outdoor cooking enthusiasts, American history buffs in general, and those interested in the culinary history of the United States frontier in particular.
