Product Description

A new term has emerged from the disability movement in the past decade to help change the way we think about neurological disorders: Neurodiversity.

ADHD. Dyslexia. Autism. The number of categories of illnesses listed by the American Psychiatric Association has tripled in the past fifty years. With so many people affected by our growing “culture of disabilities,” it no longer makes sense to hold on to the deficit-ridden idea of neuropsychological illness.

With the sensibility of Oliver Sacks and Kay Redfield Jamison, psychologist Thomas Armstrong offers a revolutionary perspective that reframes many neuropsychological disorders as part of the natural diversity of the human brain rather than as definitive illnesses. Neurodiversity emphasizes their positive dimensions, showing how people with ADHD, bipolar disorder, and other conditions have inherent evolutionary advantages that, matched with the appropriate environment or ecological niche, can help them achieve dignity and wholeness in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caring, sensible, well-informed, and wise
I've been an educator for nearly five decades and have read a great many books about education, learning, and brain differences. This one is among the best.Armstrong writes that yes, ADHD, depression, and other neuropsychological conditions exist; yes, these conditions can be problematic; and yes, treatment may be called for.But the author argues that the brain differences that give rise to these conditions have been enduring evolutionary adaptations. He also convincingly shows that there are strengths in "disorders," saying, for example, that the vitality and so-called hyperfocus of ADHD are advantageous in some settings and vocations, and that the creativity of some bipolar people gives rise to productive endeavors.Armstrong writes much more about ADHD and bipolar disorder, and also about autism, dyslexia, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and other brain differences. He discusses neurodiversity in general, varieties of intelligence, and learning.

I've been clinically depressed, and the chapter titled "The Gift of Mood" held a great deal of personal meaning for me. I now realize much more fully than before how much my career, marriage, and life situation changed, mostly for the better, after and as a consequence of my depression.I've also gained a new appreciation for the brief, milder depressive episodes I still experience.

This is a caring, sensible, well-informed, and wise book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adult or younger, there may be a plus side to many mental "problems"
ADD? It might just have a flip side of a multitasking mindset that helped keep ancient hunter gatherers alive. Autism? A flip side of a narrow focus. Depression? The flip side of a drive to "cocoon" in order to reassess where one is at in life. Anxiety? The flip side might be motivation.

There's several good things to mention about Thomas Armstrong's book.

First, he doesn't deny that the neurological conditions he mentions have their down side, especially in the modern western world. As a sufferer of repeated bouts of fairly major depression, he knows that from experience. Second, while he notes possible positive flip sides, and notes they may have evolutionary roots, he doesn't try to push this book into Pop Evolutionary Psychology terrain. Third, Armstrong notes that it will take effort to realign our society to use these flip-side gifts today, but that it's worth the effort.

This a book of optimism, hope and love, yet thoroughly grounded in realism.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book whose time has come!
Dr. Thomas Armstrong,
Neurodiversity is a fresh, progressive, perspective of Autism and other brain and perceptual "disabilities" instead of the repetitive redundant illustrations of the abnormalities of the aberrant characteristics and behaviors of these people. Mr. Armstrong examines the unique gifts of these individuals.Society and all of the paternalistic institutions have demanded conformity at the expense of individuality. This has resulted in the powerlessness of individuals and consequently the decrease of creativity inventiveness and imagination creating authoritarian people and systems that reinforces domineering rigid structures, practices and prejudices.Society has valued and emphasized the importance of physical beauty, strengths and intelligence and has often disenfranchised those who lack physical strength, beauty or who have intellectual deficiencies.

As more people embrace Neurodiversity we will see significant reformation in the way we educate and raise children instead of concentration on the habilitation of people with disabilities. Dr. Armstrong will join other pioneers in rehabilitating special education and parenting children as well as how we perceive and interact with all human beings!

Moreover, Neurodiversity will lead those persons who are differently abled out of repression and bondage into true freedom and authentic empowerment.

Ken Routson, Author, Consultant, Life Coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where There Was Darkness, A Light
Ten years ago, when using Dr. Armstrong's 7 Kinds of Smart to teach my at-risk high school students, a truly extraordinary transformation occurred.Students, who had been mentally asleep, began to engage. They paid more and more attention in class as they learned about themselves and their newfound capabilities. It was revelatory. They no longer felt "stupid." They were finally being recognized. They could now take intellectual chances. They learned how to write clear and cogent essays by describing their "smarts."English became relevant.

7 Kinds of Smart became our textbook.

What Dr. Armstrong's work did for my at-risk teens, is, hopefully, taking place with Neurodiversity. Educators interacting with Special Ed children should be asking: "How do we guide these students to recognize their learning strengths?" Far too often these students are mentally drowning in labels and initials--where "lesser than" is a nightmarish mantra.

The importance of recognizing the talents of these children cannot be overestimated. If you have ever worked with a child who has academically given up, you know that there are very few things more dispiriting.Dr. Armstrong provides an antidote to this insanity through vital information, encouragement, and the techniques to recognize and celebrate these kids' talents. His Eight Principles of Neurodiversity should be a daily visual reminder to all who work in Special Education. I thought his insight on the importance of pattern recognition to be particularly salient. Seeing patterns makes life easier. And, those, who can assimilate information in such a fashion, make us all more aware.

And, I appreciate the examination of the Neurodiverse universe Dr. Armstrong presents where the challenges these kids face and present are not overlooked.

Colleges need to make this required reading for all future teachers. In an educational system gripped with rampant fear, where the joy of learning s may exist only as an afterthought, Dr Armstrong invites us onto an isle of wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and timely book!
This is such a wonderful and much needed resource in education! We have many children diagnosed with ADHD, autism, etc. and only look at these children as 'defective'.This book recognizes the gifts and challenges that exist in all of us and provides insight into the differences we have and how to take advantage of those differences in the classroom. When I read it, I couldn't help but think - it's about time!!!!! ... Product Description
Music and dyslexia is of particular interest for two reasons. Firstly, research suggests that music education can benefit young dyslexics as it helps them focus on auditory and motor timing skills and highlights the rhythms of language. Secondly, dyslexic musicians at a more advanced level face particular challenges such as sight-reading, written requirements of music examinations and extreme performance nerves.

This is a sequel to the highly successful Music and Dyslexia: Opening New Doors, published in 2001.   The field of dyslexia has developed rapidly, particularly in the area of neuropsychology. Therefore this book focuses on these research advances, and draws out the aspects of music education that benefit young dyslexics. The contributors also discuss the problems that dyslexic musicians face, and several chapters are devoted to sight-reading and specific strategies that dyslexics can use to help them sight-read.

The book offers practical techniques and strategies, to teachers and parents to help them work with young dyslexics and dyslexic musicians. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Case studies with minimal direction
I was hoping this book would explain methods through which musicians are able to overcome their learning issues. Mainly a group of case studies, this book offers hope and inspiration to those who struggle in understanding and applying music theory and technique. However, the book was short on strategies and specifics in explaining how to "open new doors."

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Musical Roadblocks due to Dyslexic Tendencies
Do you play a musical Instrument but are struggling to learn how to read musical notation? That was the case with my daughter and myself for that matter, (But I don't play an instrument yet) After a year and a half of playing the Harp my daughter couldn't figure out the Theory part. It didn't hit me until I realized that after my helping her for the past 1 1/2 yrs. that I couldn't "get it" either. After searching the Internet for hours and hours I came to the conclusion that we both have Dyslexic Tendencies. This is the only Book that I could find on the subject. If you play an Instrument and you have difficulty learning to read music this Book has a lot of answers.

Here is the Table of Contents:
Chapter 1 - The Manifestations of Dyslexia, its biological bases, and its effects on daily living.
Chapter 2- how dyslexia can affect musicians
Chapter 3- Dyslexia and musical development
Chapter 4 through 19- Personal stories about Dyslexic Musicians
Chapter 20- a multi-sensory approach to the teaching of musical notation.
Chapter 21- Gathering the threads
Appendix I- Recognizing the dyslexic child-notes for parents and teachers.
Appendix II- Checklist of dyslexic symptoms in adults.

I feel the first 4 chapters alone are worth getting the book for. Having someone explain Their Theory on Music and Dyslexia in a nutshell was very enlightening.
In Chapter 20- The Author has developed a method he calls 'Colour Staff' for learning to read Music. Interestingly enough I have developed my own variation of the same idea with using color.

After reading his idea and comparing it to mine, I like mine better. I created a 'Grand Staff' on a Word Processor and using Colored Notes I have been writing Music "In Color" for 6 Months. And guess what, IT WORKED! My daughter can read music now, and no longer has to memorize the songs she learns. I'm considering writing some sort of booklet on My Colored Notes Theory, and possibly a Web Site in the future...I hope this information helps you in your search for finding new ways of Learning to read Music..... ... Product Description

One man's quest to help his daughter led to the start of a whole new way of treating learning and attention difficulties, and this is their astounding story. When she was only nine years old, Susie Dore was diagnosed as dyslexic and told that nothing could be done to help her. Her increasing depression eventually led to three suicide attempts. Wynford set about finding a way to help her, selling his multi-million dollar business and pouring his fortune into researching dyslexia and learning difficulties. His team of researchers showed that, almost invariably, these problems are caused by an incomplete physiological development and that an answer to them might be found in a specialized exercise program. This revolutionary book captures the findings that Dore proponents believe will change the way dyslexia and ADHD are approached forever. It explains the theory behind the ideas and, through a series of case studies, demonstrates the success stories and how these ideas have changed the lives of so many for good. It is invaluable reading for anyone involved with or affected by dyslexia or any other learning difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This book gave lots of information on the brain that I haven't seen in other books. As a mother of a dyslexic son, this book gave me hope. While the centers that Dore has organized aren't anywhere near me, it gave me some more ideas on how to help my son.I would definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Has A Name
I am 51 years of age and after reading this book, It has a name. I have tried reading a few other books on this subject to help me self identify what has plagued me all of my life, but none were written with such clarity as this one. Now I know why all that I ever heard at home was why can't you be more like your sister and brother???

5-0 out of 5 stars What a breakthrough.....
My husband and I just finished reading this book over the weekend while taking a long driving trip.We both became believers and are actively looking into the program for our daughter who has Dyslexia. The story is heartwarming and the theory behind his research is nothing short of astounding. Why hasn't anyone come across this unique solution before and why isn't America helping him with his research and program. We should not let the almighty dollar stand in the way of helping our children who truly need us and who need this program. There is no price to be put on a child's value of life or on the love of parent who will do everything they can for their child.God Bless you Wynford Dore!

5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Wynford Dore
I read this book with skepticism, but I soon became convinced that the author was genuine and magnanimously generous. Wynford Dore set out to help his daughter overcome her learning disabilities. What he found was something that could help thousands of children like her. He invested his own wealth in placing the program around the globe, hoping the government and volunteer organizations would catch the spark and help him make the treatment local and affordable. In the meantime he helped over 30,000 clients. Having watched people I love struggle with similar learning problems, I applaud Mr. Dore's entrepreneurial efforts and pray that his dream of making this treatment available to all will come true. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars the gig is up!
I saw this book and thought it sounded very interesting so I decided to see what I could find out about the author.Turns out the company went bankrupt in 2008.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in Dyslexia!
Provides great insight into how learning difficulties work and what a person suffering from them goes thorough.

The 'cure' has both scientific study backing it and thousands of happy patients who have used it.All the critics are trying to sell alternative solutions without the proven efficacy of this one. It is sad when so many people can benefit from this great treatment

1-0 out of 5 stars Think twice....
Although we should all be open to new ideas, research is the best judge for results.I am a certified dyslexic tutor and tester and I have learned first hand as well as from extensive research, that unless a dyslexic child is taught with an Orton Gillingham approved program, then the success rate is very low.We now have irrefutable evidence about the cause and treatment for dyslexia and OG methods clearly out-shine any other "controversial" program.People who are in support of OG are not living in the past or too narrow minded to "think out side the box", they are people who don't ignore the facts: current research solidifies what specialist have known all these years.I personally wouldn't take the risk with my daughter and so we have used an OG program with stellar results! Most people who are taught without an OG method tend to either hit a plateau around the 4th grade reading level and or their poor spelling continues to be a problem.Their are 11 Orton-Gillingham approved programs that would be wonderful for any dyslexic child to gain lifelong reading and spelling skills all the way... not half way.

5-0 out of 5 stars DORE Program Graduate
I completed the Dore program about two years ago and it changed my
life. My Dyslexia and ADD made everyday tasks very difficult to
perform. My father talked me into doing the Dore program even though
the closest center was six hours from my home. We made the drive and I
am so glad we did. This program has enabled me to do things that were
easy to others, but impossible for me. My life is so much better after
completing the Dore program. As for the cost, I would have paid triple
that amount. I no longer have to worry about feeling stupid or ashamed
of things that were out of my control. This is a great book. Read it

On top of this many dyslexics also have eye and ear problems that go undetected, which further exacerbates the problem.

Looking at the possible remedies available, such as tinted glasses, nutritional supplements and exercising, and considering the benefits of early identification of dyslexia, this book will be an essential practical resource for both the parents of, and the professionals who work, with people with dyslexia. ... Product Description
When Adam started kindergarten, the teacher wanted him to learn about letters. But "p" looked like "q," and "b" looked like "d." Adam would rather color or mold clay. In first grade, his teacher wanted him to put the letters into words so he could read. That was the beginning of the Alphabet War. "Was" looked like "saw," and "there" looked like "then." Almost everyone else in his class was learning to read, but Adam was fighting a war against letters.

In second grade, he had to learn to spell, which was also impossible. Now he was so frustrated he got into trouble and had to go to the principal’s office. At last, in third grade, he got the right kind of help. Slowly he began to do better. During fourth grade, he learned that he was smart in other things. That gave him the confidence to take chances with reading. One day he found himself reading a book all by himself! ... Read more

I bought to read to my child in hopes to make him feel better about himself. He did not care for the book.As an adult I thought it was good but bought it for my child to understand what was going on in his mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Kid Like Me
I bought this for my 8 year old son who is an incredibly bright yet struggling student. He keeps asking to meet a boy like him. This is the closest I can come so far. This book brought tears to his eye, because he was so excited that Adam was just like him. His eyes sparkled with excitement as he exclaimed, "That's just like me!" The illustrations and metaphors are beautiful and inspiring. We are buying a copy to give to our son's classroom for the Holidays.

Product Description
The chapters in this volume are based on presentations made at a recent conference on cognitive and linguistic foundations of reading acquisition. The researchers who participated have all made contributions to the theoretical and empirical understanding of how children learn to read. They were asked to address not only what they have learned from their research, but also to discuss unsolved problems. This dialogue prompted numerous questions of both a theoretical and applied nature, generated heated debate, and fueled optimism about the important gains that have been made in the scientific understanding of the reading process, especially of the critical role played by phonological abilities.

Product Description
This important new book documents a major breakthrough in the treatment of the three most widespread learning disabilities--ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia ("clumsy child syndrome"). Although these conditions have reached epidemic proportions, treatment has been limited to ineffective behavioral therapies or the controversial prescription drug Ritalin. Now Dr. B. Jacqueline Stordy, a leading researcher in the field, reveals a stunning new treatment based on a simple nutritional supplement: LCP (long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids). The LCP Solution is the first book to describe this new natural treatment and to explain how children (and adults) can incorporate it into their daily lives.

As a member of a family with a long history of dyslexia, Dr. Stordy discovered in a pioneering experiment that dyslexic and dyspraxic children who began taking a dietary supplement consisting of LCP experienced dramatic transformations in the quality of their lives. At the same time, parallel studies conducted at Purdue University came up with similar results with children who had ADHD. The effect of this dietary supplement was nothing short of revolutionary: after only a few weeks, dyslexic and ADHD children became calmer, more focused, easier to teach, while dyspraxics improved significantly in dexterity and balance, showing markedly less anxiety.

In The LCP Solution, Dr. Stordy documents how this life-changing treatment came about and explains step-by-step how sufferers of each of the three major conditions can use it to change their lives at home, at school, and at work. Illuminating, vividly presented, and authoritative in its findings, this book will revolutionize our approach to learning disabilities. LCPs are natural, simple to use, and amazing in their benefits. If you or someone you love suffers from a learning disability, this book is essential reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars I think it's working
My son has sensory integration problems and dyspraxia.I thought I would try the Omega 3 supplementation after reading the book. In my opinion, the book is an extended case for supplementation.A lot of the information on other treatments, particularly on dyspraxia, was not up to date or helpful. However, I think the supplementation is helping.I read elsewhere on the internet that Omega 3 deficiency causes eczema, excessive thirst and easy overheating. The eczema and the excessive thirst are definitely improved--after 6 weeks, his eczema is gone. The behavior and attention improvements are harder to judge, but I think I have seen an improvement in these as well.I will continue to supplement, since I think the more obvious results are important enough, and indicate a biological need for the supplements.

I found the recommended supplement, lemon-lime Efalex, on the internet. It was about $35 for 4 oz--expensive.I still had to mix it into a smoothie to get him to take it.I am now using Trader Joe's odorless fish oil capsules, which I cut open and empty into the smoothie. It is odorless, however, it isn't 100% tasteless. He will still drink the smoothie, but it usually takes encouragement to get him to finish. With the lemon-lime, he just drank it in the smoothie with no encouragement because it tasted good.I may switch back. The dosage is about 450 mg DHA with either.

The book is worth a read. The nutrition information is helpful, and I think the supplementation is a valuable addition to the treatment program.

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped us
After reading this book, I started my son on Omegas, Vitamin E and Primrose oil. Within three days, we saw a huge jump in energy level and expressive language. It was nothing short of a miracle. He has dyspraxia and is still delayed, but has more interest in his environment. We still can't believe it.

I highly recommend this book to all special needs parents. Take the information that applies to your child and run with it. There is no silver bullet, but I really believe that supplements can help some of our children. Good luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars The LCP Solution
This book is very informative, but easily understandable in layman's terms. The nutritional supplement plan is very thorough and the medical and clinical studies findings are all included.Very helpful to help your children without medication.Karin Owens

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Provides Hope!
I've had this book for quite some time. It's ear-marked, highlighted, and pages marked with paper-clips.Very informative and proven true in my son's case!

I have read similar accounts in separate studies, along with talking with other parents. The EFAs can produce significant changes in our special kids!

We started the Essential Fatty Acids after reading about them on a Speech Apraxia site. That is only one of my son's diagnoses.I suppose his brain injury due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) is our greatest challenge and his Dyspraxia, Mild CP, Speech Apraxia, and Autism Spectrum are secondary to it.

He was helped considerably when I was giving him two capsules after reading the Speech Apraxia forums several years ago.I mean, the EFAs weren't going to hurt him! After reading this book, I found that I needed to give him five capsules for three months and drop it to one-half for maintenance. His therapists noticed considerable differences and I had not mentioned the supplements to them.I wanted impartial input and they saw what our family was experiencing. My son had more ability to concentrate, less behavior differences, he retained information better, and more useful energy. His auditory processing difficulties improved.

I can't imagine any parent unwilling to help their child when there is no possibility of harm.In any case, the EFAs are beneficial even if one sees no apparent change.

As with other treatments/therapies/supplements, every special needs child will respond differently. We have used Nordic Naturals Lemon flavored oils and capsules.Dr. Stordy gives several recommendations in her book.

I recommend QUALITY EFAsto all moms of special needs children, along with this book!It is over 300 pages of helpful information!

I wish that it would have been available 16 years ago when my son was born.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you Omega-3 deficient?
This is one book where I have truly learned how nutritionally deficient in a particular nutrient a person can become. Before reading this book, I had not even thought of whether my children were consuming enough Omega-3's in their daily diet.

The LCP Solution gives an excellent history of how as humans we have deviated from the normal staple of food our species once had consumed.Past humans depended on the intake of fish, but today with fast food and so many other options, fish is not normally put on the dinner table daily. In my house, we are lucky if we have fish every other week.

Further chapters delve into the details of exactly why Omega-3 is necessary for our bodies and more specifically our mind.Deficiencies can not only produce skin disordersbut also mind disorders, which are manageable through the supplementation of Omega-3's back into our daily diet.

Real-life stores are included as well as relevant studies and research. The medical and homeopathic communities are beginning to fully embrace the topic. In fact, my son's ADHD Pediatrician, as well as his regular Pediatrician both recommend Omega-3 supplementation.

Omega-3 supplementation has become a nutritional priority in my house because of The LCP Solution. And I am very happy to report that my 11 year old's eczema has completely resolved, his language arts and reading skills have increased, and his ADHD has become manageable.I am not professing that you will have such miraculous results, but this book is definitely worth a read.
