Extractions: March 23rd, 1999, 7:40 p.m. ET Not only can scientists use breeding to create organisms to our advantage, but scientists now have the technology to insert foreign genes into an animal. Organisms that are formed with foreign genes are known as transgenic organisms. By producing transgenic organisms, scientists can improve patients with diseases such as diabetes or cystic fibrosis. For example, diabetes is a disease in which the body does not receive enough insulin to survive. Scientists then insert genes into the diabetes which instruct the disease to create insulin. The patient's symptoms are then improved! Transgenic organisms are sometimes referred to as organisms that have gone through gene therapy. Gene therapy can be considered messing around with genes by some people, while others believe it's the great advantage of the future. However, issues pop up along with gene therapy. Should we be enabled the ability to control the outcome of a human hybrid? In other words, should be make all humans more resistant to diseases, stronger, taller, and smarter? Some say yes for the advantages, while others say it would be a too-perfect world.

Extractions: December 2002 JETS Receives Trustees Grant From Engineering Foundation The Junior Engineering Technical Society was recently named the recipient of a $100,000 grant from the United Engineering Foundation. Specifically, the grant will be used for a mass mailing of information on engineering and engineering careers to approximately 44,000 middle and high school guidance counselors throughout the U.S. The funding will also help JETS create a middle school section on its Web site (www.jets.org) that will include links to engineering organization Web pages, homework help, information about national and local engineering and design competitions, and related programs and activities. JETS will also expand its participation in exhibits and presentation efforts at events geared toward education and guidance counselors, while continuing this work at engineering events. The Junior Engineering Technical Society was founded in 1950 and is known for its competitions such as TEAMS and UNITE, as well as National Engineering Aptitude Search+, an academic survey that helps students determine their preparation level in basic engineering skills, such as math, science, and reasoning. JETS is dedicated to providing real-world engineering and problem-solving experience to high school students.
