5-0 out of 5 stars Earth SCIENCE
An fine entry-level resource for high school and university students. The books have interesting pictures and a diversity of topics reinforce clear explanations of scientific principles that cut across the geosciences. SCIENCE is well presented.
Joan Francis, Earth Science Teacher, Retired Geologist.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more balanced approach
I have reviewed critical articles of this book to determine whether it should be considered as a possible home school reference. In spite of a good coverage of important topics, the editors and writers present only the humanist driven explanations of the earth's creation and evolution. Intelligent design perspectives and scriptural facts are missing from their scientific literalist presentations. An editorial policy of scientific literalism does not completely serve those looking for broader treatment of all the facts. Most importantly, the book does not account for facts relating to Flood stratigraphy and editorializes against and ignores the facts supporting a "younger earth" hypothesis.

I like the mixture of astronomy and geology, but the astronomy articles treat physics and chemistry THEORIES as established fact. I would have liked more on environmental matters, especially articles on exploitation of the biosphere.

The pictures are good but, as with the text, the resources directing students to additional information seem slanted toward the scientific literalist perspective. The book would be greatly improved by presenting all sides of the growing scientific debate. In a book on Earth Science, all scientific perspectives need coverage. Although there is some good factual information, the books treatment of many creation and evolution issues seems one-sided and is thus incomplete. I would not recommend this book as appropriate as a stand-alone reference resource for home school study.

Product Description

From the scorching center of Earth's core to the outer limits of its atmosphere, from the gradual process of erosion that carved the Grand Canyon to the earth-shaking fury of volcanoes and earthquakes, this fascinating book -- inspired by the award-winning Hall of Planet Earth at New York City's American Museum of Natural History -- tells the story of the evolution of our planet and of the science that makes it work. With the same exuberance and expertise they brought to the creation of the Hall of Planet Earth, co-curators Edmond A. Mathez and James D. Webster offer a guided tour of Earth's dynamic, 4.6-billion-year history.

Including numerous full-color photographs of the innovative exhibit and helpful, easy-to-understand illustrations, the authors explore the major factors in our planet's evolution: how Earth emerged from the swirling dusts of a nascent solar system; how an oxygen-rich, life-sustaining atmosphere developed; how continents, mountain ranges, and oceans formed; and how earthquakes and volcanic eruptions alter Earth's surface. Traversing geologic time and delving into the depths of the planet- -- beginning with meteorites containing minuscule particles that are the solar system's oldest known objects, and concluding with the unusual microbial life that lives on the chemical and thermal energy produced by sulfide vents in the ocean floor --The Earth Machine provides an up-to-date overview of the central theories and discoveries in earth science today. By incorporating stories of real-life fieldwork, Mathez and Webster explain how Earth is capable of supporting life, how even the smallest rocks can hold the key to explaining the formation of mountains, and how scientists have learned to read nature's subtle clues and interpret Earth's ever-evolving narrative.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Earth Machine : The Science of a Dynamic Planet
The book's quality is good for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Geology is soooooooo boring!
This book just keeps talking and talking and talking about rocks.I mean, really, how much is there to say? They come in different colors and they're usually pretty hard, except when they're not.Otherwise, meh.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sound Introduction to the Dynamics of Earth History
Books on geology can, if poorly written or too technical,be unbelievably dull except to the enthusiast.Still earth history is important to us all as it deals with the formation of minerals, rocks and energy sources like coal and oil, as well as the origin and evolution of life, the causes of volcanoes and earth quakes, the movements of continents and the development and possible future of the atmosphere.Indeed it encompasses the very foundation of our existence. In "The Earth Machine: The Science of a Dynamic Planet" Edmond A. Mathez and James D. Webster have given this subject a new breath of life and have produced probably the best introduction to geology for the layman currently in print.

In their book they explain current theories on the evolution and movement of continents, the development of life, the formation of the atmosphere and the threats of ozone depletion and global warming, and many more aspects of the study of our home planet. They give accounts of great volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, explain mountain building and ocean currents, discuss the weird ecosystems of hydrothermal vents and the formation of valuable productions of the earth like salt, gold and coal. All the while they sprinkle in historical accounts of past geologists and their work in a fascinating narrative.

All in all this is a great introductory text in earth history and I recommend it enthusiastically for anyone curious of how our blue planet functions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for in-depth collections
The Earth Machine: The Science of a Dynamic Planet covers the science of geology, is the collaborative work of, written by two curators, Edmond Mathez and James Webster ( one of mineral deposits and the other of petrology) and is recommended for college-level collections where geology and science are strong parts of the curriculum. Full-color photos inspired by the Hall of Planet Earth at New York's American Museum of Natural History document the evolution of the planet in a guide highly recommended for in-depth collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book for general reading . . .

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Service.
It got to me a later than when I expected, but I got for wa I paid. Im pleased!

1-0 out of 5 stars Liberal Propaganda
I was forced to purchase this book for a college class. It doesn't take long to find out this book was written to keep pushing the liberal agenda. This book is all about how humans have destroyed the earth already and how the earth would be better off without humans. Don't buy this book unless you want to read about how all biological problems are a direct result of human actions. This book is an example of how our school systems are infected with socialist, closed minded, left wing educators. I threw this book into the local landfill to one, keep this book out of circulation and two, to add to my "carbon footprint".

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad or horrible, could of been better.
The book had scratches on the cover due to packaging according to seller.I thought shipping would of been faster, but at least I didn't wait the max time slated. As well, some pages were crinkled when first open, suppose to be brand new.Other then that, pretty good seller and book seems to be okay.

Product Description
Women's contributions to science fiction over the past century have been lasting and important, but critical work in the field has only just begun to explore its full range. Justine Larbalestier has collected 11 key stories--many of them not easily found, and all of them powerful and provocative--and sets them alongside 11 new essays, written by top scholars and critics, that explore the stories' contexts, meanings, and theoretical implications. The resulting dialogue is one of enormous significance to critical scholarship in science fiction, and to understanding the role of feminism in its development. Organized chronologically, this anthology creates a new canon of feminist science fiction and examines the theory that addresses it. Daughters of Earth is an ideal overview for students and general readers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Stories, So-So Analysis
I enjoyed all but one of the 11 stories in this book from 1927 to 2002.Even though I didn't enjoy Pamela Zoline's "The Heat Death of the Universe" I can see why it is an important story to include in this collection of some of the science fiction that can be seen as feminist."seen as feminist" here is the key I think especially when you look at the essays paired with each story. A few of the essays were spot on -- looked at the author and the story in their historical context.Others rambled between sharing previous scholarship and trying to find multiple readings of the material one of which was a feminist interpretation. The 11 stories are intense and moving, challenging the reader while entertaining.I loved that they were organized chronologically because I could see a flow and development of the feminist voice.I wish a concluding essay had tied them all together to bring this out more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sci Fi the way it oughta be!
The best work in Sci Fi during the 50's, 60's and 70's was by women, and a lot of the best stories are right here. Fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to the readers of the twenty-first century
Expertly compiled and deftly edited by science fiction expert and author Justine Larbalesier, "Daughters of Earth: Feminist Science Fiction in the Twentieth Century" is both a collection of eleven short stories by famous feminist science fiction authors and eleven analytical essays which accompany and explain the short stories displayed. Both the authors of the short stories and the authors of the critical essays are feminist science fiction experts. Some of the authors of the short stories include Octavia Butler, Gwyneth Jones, Leslie Stone, Kate Wilhelm, Pamela Zoline, Lisa Tuttle, Pat Murphy, and James Tiptree Jr. Critical essayists include, not in order, Lisa Yaszek, Josh Lukin, Wendy Pearson, Joan Haran, Veronica Hollinger, Andrea Hairston, and L. Timmel Duchamp. These are the famed jewels of feminist science fiction, and it is indeed a rare treat to have the entire volume and its companion essays to peruse. If you have ever read Octavia Butler "The Evening and the Morning and the Night," you will relish the companion essay, 'Praise Song to a Prophetic Artist,' by Andrea Hairston. Paving the way for future feminist writers and thinkers, these authors represent a rich composite vein to be mined at will. An amazing amount of detective work and scholarship went into this edition. "Daughters of Earth" is a gift to the readers of the twenty-first century, in hopes that they remember upon whose literary shoulders they are standing in the fields of science fiction, speculative fiction, and fantasy. ...
