Product Description
Aimee Liu, who wrote Solitaire, the first-ever memoir of anorexia, in 1979, returns to the subject nearly three decades later and shares her story and those of the many women in her age group of life beyond this life-altering ailment. She has extensively researched the origins and effects of both anorexia and bulimia, and dispels many commonly held myths about these diseases with the persuasive conclusion that anorexia is a result of personality.
Key revelations include: the temperament required for eating disorders, the long-term effects of eating disorders on health, brain function, relationships and career, why some individuals recover while others relapse, and why many relapse in mid-life,Which treatment approaches are most successful long-term and how parents can tell if a child will be vulnerable to eating disorders.
Using her own experience and the stories of many recovering anorexics she's interviewed, Liu weaves together a narrative that is both persuasive in argument and compelling in personal details.

I never got this book!I do think the seller is going to credit me though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Inspiring
This is my absolute favorite ED recovery book.Amy's story is so full of hope. She works hard to dispel many of the myths surrounding ED recovery - particularly the myth that you can never recover and live a normal life.Thank you Amy for writing Gaining!I am looking forward to re-reading Gaining this year to write a review for my blog.

2-0 out of 5 stars Self-Help v. Self-Assessment v. Clouded Judgment
While many readers appear to have found this work enlightening, I am a little concerned that a person with self-interest is exploring this topic --- which sorely needs exploration --- in a quasi-scientific, quasi-narrative form, half-science, half-social observation. This is where relatively small bits of data can get expanded into "truth."It is also of concern that the book is in some measures self-serving. The writer is at pains to illustrate her "progress."What of those who do not self-assess so favorably?Bear in mind that anorexics may be fiercely competitive. While an enjoyable read, I await further discussions of this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
I appreciate Aimee Liu's follow-up to her first book, "Solitaire". It's rare that we hear from those that have recovered, or more accurately, are still recovering from, eating disorders. There is a wealth of literature on what the actual experience of an eating disorder is like, but this is one of the first books that I have found that truly discusses what life is like after the eating disorder. Liu explores life "after" eating disorders in an honest way, never claiming that there is a miracle cure, but showing many different paths out of the hell of eating disorders. She is a talented writer, and weaves together a book that is informative, helpful, inspiring, and very truthful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique look at eating disorders
Aimee Liu takes a unique perspective in this book, looking at the personality traits and inherent characteristics of eating disorder sufferers and showing how those qualities influence every aspect of life. This book is about so much more than food, weight, and maladaptive eating patterns; it's about how to live a complete and fulfilling life. The lessons it contains apply to everyone, and I sincerely believe it's worth a read no matter who you are. ... Read more

Product Description
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been proven effective for treating Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. However, this type of program requires at least 6 months of weekly sessions with a qualified mental health professional. If you suffer from an eating disorder and want to get treatment, but have little time to devote to therapy, a shorter, time-limited program may be right for you.

This workbook outlines a Guided Self-Help (GSH) program based on the principles of CBT. Although sessions with a therapist or clinician are required, there are usually no more than 12 and each one is only 25 minutes long. You will do much of the treatment on your own using the workbook as your guide. You will learn and practice the skills you need to overcome your eating disorder and establish healthy habits, while consulting with your therapist for encouragement and support. Through daily self-monitoring of your eating patterns, and strategies such as challenging negative thoughts and formal problem-solving, you will reduce your desire to binge and purge. GSH is hard work, but the benefits are well worth it. If you have the desire and the drive, you can use this workbook to eliminate your eating disorder once and for all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing original - doesn't live up to it's title
As someone who has struggled w/an eating disorder for the past 15 years, I was looking forward to this book being the answer and something I could use with my therapist to end this binging.I was disappointed when it arrived. It was not much of a "workbook" but more of an narrative book with a FEW workbook pages. The information was nothing new...it has all been published before in other books on Binge Eating. It's misleading that the book is in the series "Treatments That Work" when it was a huge disappointment. ... Read more

Product Description
Eating disorders–including anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating–are among the most painful and difficult illnesses a person can face. Sufferers know firsthand the confusion and agony these illnesses can bring. They also know how it feels to long for hope–and to wonder if victory can ever be achieved.

The truth is, eating disorders affect the whole person. Yet treatments often focus on emotional issues alone. In this powerful book for individuals who suffer from eating disorders and those who love them, Dr. Gregg Jantz fills in the gaps left by traditional treatment programs, tackling not only the emotional, but also the crucial and all-too-often ignored relational, physical, and spiritual dimensions of healing.

Outlining a comprehensive, holistic, and practical approach, Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders brings spiritual, relational, and physical elements back into the healing process. Described by best-selling author and physician Lendon Smith, author of Feed Your Kids Right, as “the most helpful book on eating disorders there is,” this book will, with God’s help and grace, lead readers out of their bondage to eating disorders and permanently transform lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This book is a must read for anyone who has been touched by eating disorders! Dr. Jantz walks the reader through the pain and issues, always from a loving, compassionate- and relevant - Christian approach. The reader is guided to greater tools of healing and recovery through this book; the journal and "workbook" aspects of it alone, shine a much needed light of God's love and truth to the individual and to the disorder. It is a must read for those afflicted in any way, as well as for those within the field of eating disorder treatment and recovery!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great concepts for treating eating disorders
I am aminister that does counseling with individuals struggling with a variety of issues including eating disorders.

Over and over again I find that the issues that Dr. Jantz address in this book are common among those I counsel. Especially the area of unforgiveness. I am convinced that unforgiveness is the #1 root of much mental illness, addictions, and emotional instability.

I really appreciate Dr. Jantz's whole-person approach to the treating of eating disorders. Too many times counselors and treatment facilities only deal with changing behavior and ignore the other areas of a person's life. Based upon my experience, unless all areas of a person's life is addressed they will not experience long term recovery.

Reading teh book you come to understand that Dr. Jantz is interested in more than a person having victory over eating disorders-his goal is for them to become a whole person in all areas of their life.

2-0 out of 5 stars wasn't as helpful as I thought it would be.
As a woman of God, I looked to this book for hope and faith that one day I'll overcome my eating disorder. I am currently 2 years into recovery from EDNOS.

However, although this book isn't as bad as "the best little girl in the world," I was not pleased. I felt like it was going no where. I didn't really get any answers at all. The continuous repetitive thoughts going through my mind basically read "okay, but... I already knew that... what's next?"

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!
If you are not a religious person, don't waste your time. Too much God and not enough healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders
This book gave me hope and has started to Heal my wounds from the past. The questions written in the book that you ask yourself are tough and do bring up painful memories. However, this is how you begin to heal and learn to forgive so that you can be set free from Anger, Unforgiveness and Shame and guilt. You do what you do to cope for a reason and a way of escape.
I praise God that he has blessed me with this book.

Product Description
In this second edition of the Handbook of Eating Disorders every chapter has been rewritten. This was necessary to reflect not only the many advances in knowledge and understanding of eating disorders, but also the advances in communication between clinical and academic branches, and between countries. The second edition embraces this more coherent, integrated approach.

The spectrum of what is termed an eating disorder now includes obesity, and new conditions such as binge eating disorder have emerged. In this new edition, many chapters now encompass both the lean and obese ends of the spectrum so that each may benefit from understanding gained in the other. To further encourage this synthesis and consensus, chapter authors have been paired with colleagues in other schools, countries or disciplines.

However, like the previous edition, the Handbook of Eating Disorders, Second Edition provides a clear, coherent, readable and authoritative overview of this rapidly developing field that will be welcomed by all clinicians and researchers in the eating disorders field. ... Read more

This is a helpful book for those dealing with any eating disorder of any kind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very usable book
As a professional in this field, I am always searching for useful, user-friendly tools.Once I find them, I keep them in my office to give to my patients.I find that sometimes it's even too much work to purchase a book.I found this extremely readable and relatable to folks with eating disorder.I rarely use medication alone and this has been a very helpful adjunct and I now keep extra copies in my office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book out there for binge eaters
I have tried everything to stop binge eating- OA, Weight Watchers, diets etc.....
This book is the only thing that has given me success. I have a great eating disorders Dr and this is what he works with.
Keeps it simple, direct, focused, do-able
Trying to eat only when you're hungry never worked for me- Normal eaters eat three meals a day and 2-3 snacks
I am now a normal eater- intuitive eating puzzled my over-thinking mind
Love this book

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring,boring
I was so bored reading this, that I skimmed through most of it. To me, this book is something a counselor/therapist should have in their office to sit on their bookshelf, only to be opened when they have a particular patient coming in with an eating disorder, & they need to brush up on the problem before their session. If you are totally new to eating disorders, or you are a family member who is trying to understand a loved one with an e.d., then you may find this helpful. To those who have been struggling with their eating for a long time, this book probably won't be of much help. Definitely for people with no knowledge of eating disorders.

Product Description
At the age of twenty-one, stylish and striking Ron Saxen turned heads on the street. A promising model with a tony California agency, his lithe and muscular body graced the pages of magazines and even the cover of a fitness book. He was headed for a future of bright lights and brighter possibilities--but a dark turn of events would leave Saxen working for minimum wage in a coffee shop and dodging his agent less than a year later.

Binge eating disorder, a malady that strikes some 2.5 million Americans--40 percent of whom are men--led Saxen to gain nearly one hundred pounds, destroying his modeling career and threatening his health and sanity. This compelling memoir tells Saxen's story as he plunges into binge eating, dangerous starvation diets, drug use, and a rollercoaster ride of odd careers, destructive relationships, and personal tragedies--all set against a fabulous backdrop that ranges from the streets of Sacramento to the fundamentalist enclaves of the Great Plains. A gripping page turner from start to finish, this amazing personal memoir will help break stereotypes and shed new light on this common disorder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Binge Eating Isn't Just For Women
Too often we read and hear of women with eating disorders. This book was very enlightening.I think it took a lot of courage for Ron Saxen to write this book and disclose so much of his life -- the good as well as the bad.Thank you, Ron, for taking the time to write.I hope many women and men that deal with the same issues will find answers, hope and help for themselves reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars BRUTALLY HONEST STORY OF ONE MAN'S STRUGGLE
When I read a blurb in NEWSWEEK a few months ago about Binge Eating Disorder and Ron Saxen's book, I was quick to pre-order the book. Binge Eating Disorder (BED)is becoming more and more common, yet, very few books address this problem. I expected THE GOOD EATER to be the salvation that held all the keys to unlock the mysteries of BED. THE GOOD EATER was a very different book than I expected. It is really the story of Ron Saxen's life and struggles and his use of food for comfort. A very difficult childhood left him emotionally vacant and lacking in self-confidence. He turned to food and gained and lost weight for years. At one point, he lost enough weight to be signed with a modeling agency and the chance for a promising career. Despite the successful start to his career, he was still overweight and unattractive in his mind. For an emotional eater, handling success can be harder than handling failure. Ron turned to food and gained weight and left his modeling career behind him. For the next 20 years he struggles with various careers, including as a stand up comedian. He even briefly joins the Marines. In a search for love and acceptance, he enters into an unhappy marriage. 20 years after his modeling career, he finds the strength and the love to turn his life around and have a proper relationship with food. The book really is not self-help in nature but the brutally honest story of one man's struggle with food. Ron tells it like it is and rarely is the story pretty. There is hope in his dedication and determination. It's hard to let go of the past and our childhoods can haunt us forever. Only in the last few pages is the issue of binge eating addressed. If you suffer from binge eating disorder, THE GOOD EATER isn't your salvation but there is comfort in knowing you are not alone. It's easy to relate to Ron's downward slide into uncontrollable binge eating. Food was his best friend and gave him temporary relief from the emotional pain of life. His journey is heartbreaking but there is hope around the corner for all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Good Eater
Ron Saxen's The Good Eater is one of the first, if not first, books written about binge eating from the perspective of a male. When reading the book I could vividly see the events playing out and the impact on Ron and his family.

Ron's work has inspired me to move forward in my own personal journey to confront binge eating and the emotions that drive me to binge. That alone should be the true test of the book and in my opinion it passes with an A+.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is about a man who grows up in a dysfuntional home and tries to make something of himself by going after all the wrong things. Number one being food and then girls, sex, jobs and even marriage. In the end though he realizes that the only thing that makes him well is realizing he will never be perfect and learning to accept himself with his flaws. I found the book very interesting. The only reason I gave it a 4 is becuase of the constant swearing. Ok, I am not a prude and I understand that at times swearing can get across the point of pain. But, the F word was used constantly and I got tired of it in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly entertaining!
The inspirational book, The Good Eater, is a candid and absorbing memoir of author Ron Saxen's struggle with BED (binge eating disorder). The author's revealing recollections of his life are often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking. The Good Eater is well paced and written in an entertaining conversational style.Highly recommended! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Surviving an Eating Disorder
This book has helped me better understand eating disorders. I would recommend it to anyone who needs information.
The book was received in great condition and in a timely manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Target audience: the ED uneducated
I was surprised to read the reviews for this book.It is actually effective at what it is designed to do: teach friends and family of those who have an ED about the condition. It is not for those who have had a college course in body image disorders or those who are currently seeking treatment - there are much better resources available that will be of a much higher interest to you and will have more in depth info.

I mailed this book to my mother, mother-in law, and college friend when I decided to go into recovery. It is small and unassuming. It is easy to read.It isn't threatening or verbose.I think its a good start in the right direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This was recommended by my daughter's physician and I found it to be the most informative of the very many books on ED that I have read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for sufferers
I got this book without reading the subtitle (Strategies for Family and Friends).I thought it might help me with Binge-Eating problems. It didn't.In fact, I got very bored. It was sickeningly boring and only discussed how to handle things if you weren't really all that involved.

First of all, it's my experience with any kind of mental health problem that you can't give a person help if they don't want the help. They have to make a conscious effort to choose to get help. This book somewhat bypasses this whole thing.

Second, it states what you typically see in an Anorexic -- loss of weight, not eating, etc.Okay, who doesn't know this?If you didn't know this, then you probably wouldn't be picking up the book in the first place.

I really don't think this book would be helpful if I had a friend or family member with an eating disorder. It's very unhelpful in my personal opinion.

Skip this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars written specifically for family and friends
This is a good book designed for the friends and family of eating disorder sufferers. Before I gave this book to my familiy, I read it myself.I liked that the authors suggested therapy/counseling for friends and family, who can sometimes feel helpless watching their loved one suffer with an eating disorder. There was also a lot of focus on parents. That's good for many, but my family is not a problem in my case. When I gave this book to my family, I told them to ignore that chapter since it did not pertain to us.The information provided within the book helped my family understand what I'm going through, and for that I am thankful.I didn't know how to get the words out to explain the eating disorder. This book helped me tell my family of my disorder. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a good try
this is a great workbook for people who have the time for a lot of writing and reflection -- and willpower to stay on track. an avid reader and searcher for all things pertaining to the treatment of eating disorders, i did not find this book to be much help above and beyond what you normally read in all the other "self help" books. Basically, it summarizes the other books and puts it into question/answer form. it also does not go into each area deeply enough to provide what i would consider lasting effects of treatment from the reflection. a good therapist and support group and/or network of support will do better than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was so helpful
This book was so helpful in helping me better understand eating disorders and how they act as coping mechanisms.I used to think it was just about the wish to look better and lose weight. I now really understand how psychological it is, and this book was so insightful in helping me put together the skills and tools I need to recover from my eating disorder.I would, without hesitation, recommend this book to anyone struggling with an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me so much
I have anorexia for a year and it is so hard. I feel like nobody understands and my friends think I am weird and don't want to be friends anymore but when I read this book I felt like finally someone understands and I don't have to live like this anymore. I am not all better yet but I am working hard and this book helps a lot. I wish my friends would read it and that teachers could understand that I don't do this on purpose. The chapter for parents helped my mom alot. I hope anybody that has an eating disorder can read ths book and get help. And I hope that someone writes a book for friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disagree with the others
This book is a much needed book. It has a unique flair and is incredibly invaluable for anyone in recovery. I have been using it with my therapist and have found it to be helping my recovery above and beyond what I would be doing in just my sessions alone.I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a task oriented approach to therapy.

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of the same material, done again
I think the concept of the book is a great one, but it would be helpful to talk more about recovery from a personal perspective. The book has a lot of material that I have read before, it is just rewritten a different way.

I also think it is too pricey. ... Read more

Product Description
Reading this book is an enlightening experience! Weaving a rich tapestry of multicultural myths, ancient legends, and simple folktales, Anita Johnston teaches women how to free themselves from disordered eating by discovering the metaphors that are hidden in their own life stories. "Storytellers speak in the language of myth and metaphor," Johnston explains. "They tell us a truth that is not literal, but symbolic. If we hear the stories with only the outer ear, they can seem absurd and untrue, but when listened to with the inner ear, they convey a truth that can be understood and absorbed on a deeply personal level. In this way, stories help us connect with our inner world, to the natural rhythms and cycles of the earth, and to the power of our intuitive wisdom."In addition to being immensely enjoyable reading, Eating in the Light of the Moon is filled with practical exercises and profound insights. Twenty chapters explore different themes of self-discovery and empowerment on core issues such as:

Intuition: The Inner Seeing, Hearing, Knowing

Symbolism: Hunger as a Metaphor

Feelings: Gifts from the Heart

Moontime: Reclaiming the Body's Wisdom

Dreamtime: The Journey Within

Sexuality: Embracing the Feminine

Recovery: Out of the Labyrinth ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Never once on Amazon have I seen 48 out of 48 five star reviews for anything.Generally there's someone who doesn't like something about whatever it is, but this book well deserves the accolades it's received.I was completely turned around in my thinking after just reading the first two chapters, & I love the idea that "food" is not the problem.I would suggest also reading "Reinventing Your Life" by Jeffrey Young as a sort of companion piece to this book.Loved them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening to say the least
This book is more than fantastic. It has helped me more than any book, any therapy, any friendship through my ED. It's like I have a pocket guide that understands exactly how I see the world and relates to how I feel. I recommend this book for all women. 50 5 star reviews doesn't lie.

5-0 out of 5 stars self-help book
This book was recommended to me by a psychologist and I have found it very interesting. It was delivered quickly and was in the condition described.

5-0 out of 5 stars New insights into the issue
It is my opinion that when all is said and done, there will be found to be lots of reasons why people struggle with weight issues. I think, for example, that the massive amounts of chemicals in our foods and in our general environment contribute greatly to the problem of obesity. But there are certainly other issues to the problem and this book addresses the emotional issues in an artful way.

I don't actually have an eating disorder but I still recognized the issues and appreciated the solutions the author presents so well. Those of us who do not deal with our issues by using food, but rather by other also indirect (and futile) ways, can also benefit from this book by simply substituting our misguided attempts at life's solutions (other addictions, whatever) with "food," and there you have it.

The fables and stories are pure, very creative, and can be applied to many of life's problems in order to provide needed insight for life change.

So, yes. I think this book would be helpful for those who have eating disorders, and maybe even for those of us who do not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr. Johnston! From a grateful reader!
Words cannot fully express what an excellent book this is! I've read several self-help books on happiness, eating behavior, Louise Hay books, Eckhart Tolle books, etc. This book is so unique in the way it delivers its message. I really enjoyed every chapter. After reading it a second time, I continue to grow and learn from it.

Thank you so much Anita, from one person to another, your book has touched me in so many ways, I cannot express it all.

I recommend any women w/emotional eating issues to read this book. You won't regret it. And please, after reading it take a few minutes of your time to write a review on it (here on Amazon). I rarely write reviews but was compelled to b/c this book was so incredible!

I wish everyone w/an eating issue to find their way to a more intuitive eating path.Namaste. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Step Backwards?
I write this review as a person with what is probably a mild case of BED. I read the popular book on the subject by Christopher Fairburn, Overcoming Binge Eating, and came away from that book with a CBT plan that I felt would work. It made sense and progressed well. I also recognized that that book was written back in 1995 or so and figured that in the years since, advancements had been made.

Unfortunately, I was wrong, and it seems things have regressed. The problem is that this is a true manual. Of the same kin as something that would be used to fix a car engine, except for the crucial and often overlooked fact that people are not car engines. In fact, we are quite a bit more complex than that. I get the feeling that in order to create the CBT problem herein the authors (or whomever designed the program) drew a diagram, where certain "cues" led to certain "behaviors" and then declared "I know! If only we interrupt the cues!" Sounds good in theory, however, in practice I doubt the CBT manual here would provide anyone any good. Indeed, in the larger of two studies that used it, only 17% of people using it as self-help improved (compared with ~10% no-therapy control group). I'm cherry picking, as the other therapist-led groups did better, but I feel the number is telling, especially after reading the therapy itself.

The therapy is not bad, it's just utterly un-insightful. It is this: Any little thing that is determined to be a risk factor or cause of BED (low self-esteem, impulsiveness, etc, etc) has a worksheet. You do 3-4 worksheets a week, and that's it. Cured! One could go through this therapy spending 15 minutes a week reading the handout of the week, 15 minutes a week doing the worksheets of the week, and 5 minutes a day filling out the "self-monitoring worksheet" where one need not even record what they ate, but simply make marks throughout the day for when food was eaten. That's it! No change needs to happen. No assessment of "am I really following this" as there is nothing to follow. In Fairburn's outdated CBT manual one could not progress to the next step until some requirement was satisfied (e.g. eating at regular meal times throughout the day). In this program, eating regularly is a suggestion mentioned perhaps twice, oh, and of course you must fill out the meal planning worksheet, for "at least three days". That oughta do it.

Perhaps this CBT manual is a suggestion, and it's up to the therapist to actually make it good. But I doubt it. And I also want to mention that I am a fan of CBT. I have used it to great effect in the past, for social anxiety. I do not scoff at "changing your thoughts" type of activities, except when they are as unmotivated and un-insightful as they are here. I feel as though the authors have not actually conversed with patients with BED, and have not tried to see things from their perspective and ask them how they might make the therapy better. The only point of view they seem to acknowledge is the numbers that come out of clinical trials.

Being of the scientific persuasion myself, I am sympathetic to this viewpoint. But if it were the only method we allowed ourselves to gain understanding of psychological problems, I doubt this field would ever progress. On the other hand, the book does a good job of citing all it's references and playing devil's advocate to itself by covering all sides of everything.

I see Fairburn has his own more recent clinical manual on Amazon (except he calls it a "guide", a distinction I appreciate), that I may check out next.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent CBT Clinical Curriculum for BED
The book is another step in the clinical march of the CBT camp as it prolifically designs and field-tests problem-specific applications.

The volume introduces the CBT in application to Binge-Eating Disorder (BED) and offers a detailed, ready-to-use clinical curriculum for applying the CBT paradigm to this population. The curriculum is well suited for groups and individuals.

The approach sets primarily behavioral goals (reduce binge-eating behavior) and offers behavioral (relaxation, trigger/cue control, habit modification) strategies as well as cognitive strategies (ranging from classic reframing to emotional self-regulation), as well as elements of exposure/decensitization experiential exercises, coupled with skills training (stress mng, etc.).

The book offers a brief review of other approaches to BED (e.g. offers minimal coverage of DBT, Interpersonal, etc.).The volume summarizes efficacy research and positions CBT as the best empirically supported tx strategy for BED to date.

Well compiled, well designed, well presented, well priced - another CBT power tool (with the added benefit of being generalizable to other compulsive-spectrum clinical presentations).

Product Description
Some 95% of eating disorder sufferers are girls between the ages of 12 and 25. The teen and college years are a crucial time for girls, when positive or negative views about their bodies often become manifest.

Written to eating disorder sufferers who are at this critical age, this book provides hope that, through faith and trust in God, they too can rise above the living death of eating disorders and arise as God’s daughters, full of life and with a promising future.

The author tells her personal story of struggling with and defeating her eating disorder. She shares about her overweight childhood, her family-directed diets, the thrilling sense of control she got when she lost weight, and her spiral into anorexia and bulimia. When she left home to go to college, she looked forward to being on her own but fell into even more destructive eating behaviors. After she was confronted by her loved ones and hospitalized, she began the recovery process that led to the day when she could at last eat a normal meal and feel that it was okay. She highlights her relationship with God and the security that eating disorder sufferers can find in God as their loving Father, the one who created them and loves them as they are.

Each chapter includes a prayer for the sufferer, asking God’s help. This book will help sufferers feel less alone, see the extreme results of uninterrupted eating disorders, understand and correct their wrong thinking, and learn to connect with and trust God while they are moving toward recovery. ... I got this book a long time ago from a really nice lady who thought it could help me threw....problems.. I could never get into it. To this day i have it with my bible and still cant seem to find any interest in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring.
For anyone struggling with an eating disorder, or struggling to recover, I highly recommend this book. The author clearly illistrates her shared struggle, but in no way glorifies her struggle. There is a journaling component to the book, which is very useful for recovery and understanding one's eating disorder. This book is extremely encouraging.

Product Description

This important work illuminates the relationship between the anguish of eating disorder sufferers and the problems of ordinary women. It covers a wide variety of issues from ways in which gender may predispose women to eating disorders to the widespread cultural concerns these problems symbolize. Chapters all share three basic elements: The psychology of women is reflected in the concepts and methods described; there is an explicit commitment to political and social equality for women; and therapy is reevaluated based on an understanding of the needs of women patients and the potentially differing contributions of male and female therapists.

4-0 out of 5 stars reveals dearth of serious feminist theorizing about EDs
This collection of twenty-two essays by therapists, professors, researchers, and philosophers explores the sociocultural phenomenon of eating disorders from a feminist perspective, working through questions of theory and application with an eye toward cultivating a better-informed approach to the epidemic. The book begins with some historical framing, includes a section on the issues that mere fact of having a body raise for patient and therapist, deals with questions of textuality and discourse, and calls for a feminist model of treatment and recovery as well as a redefined research agenda for the entire field. Two important essays, Marcia Germaine Hutchinson's "Imagining Ourselves Whole: A Feminist Approach to Treating Body Image Disorders" and Deborah L. Tolman and Elizabeth Debold's "Conflicts of Body and Image: Female Adolescents, Desire, and the No-Body Body," unsettle the position of woman within speech and society by using the compound "body-image" to show how woman stands as both speaking, acting subject (body) and passive gazed-at object or picture (image).

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-explicated series of works on a ubiquitous problem
The authors delve into some of the least-examined aspects of eating disorders with grace and insight. This is the book that the eating disorder literature has needed: one that incorporates a feminist perspective, involves cultural considerations, and combines theory with research for adynamic text.

A unique new approach to treating eating disorders

Eight million women in the United States suffer from anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia. For these women, the road to recovery is a rocky one. Many succumb to their eating disorders. Life Without Ed offers hope to all those who suffer from these often deadly disorders. For years, author Jennifer Schaefer lived with both anorexia and bulimia. She credits her successful recovery to the technique she learned from her psychologist, Thom Rutledge.

This groundbreaking book illustrates Rutledge's technique. As in the author's case, readers are encouraged to think of an eating disorder as if it were a distinct being with a personality of its own. Further, they are encouraged to treat the disorder as a relationship rather than as a condition. Schaefer named her eating disorder Ed; her recovery involved "breaking up" with Ed

  • Shares the points of view of both patient and therapist in this approach to treatment
  • Helps people see the disease as a relationship from which they can distance themselves
  • Techniques to defeat negative thoughts that plague eating disorder patients

Prescriptive, supportive, and inspirational, Life Without Ed shows readers how they too can overcome their eating disorders. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Adverse Effects...
This book only made me think more about what to eat what not to eat and how to deal with the "issues" in my head. I was on the road to a great recovery and was feeling much better when I started reading this book and it just took me back into the world that I lived in before adding a whole new spectrum of thoughts that I had never had before that. I HATED the things that this book made me think about and I started comparing myself to the girl in the book and how I need to be a better anorexic than her. I know that some people love this book and it helped them a lot , but it had the reverse effect on me, so if you are a parent... I wouldn't recommend that you get this book for your child. Do you REALLY want to take the risk of it having an adverse effect on your child? They are already struggling enough and this book might add to that. I personally do not recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars book
If you have a eating disorder or know someone who does this book is awesome. It's a must read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good book, plenty of good info
A great good that gives a good understand about how people can easily get into eating disorders. My wife has been dealing with this issue for several years now. I haven't finished the book, but I will write another review when I finish so I can let you all know my insights to this matter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for friends and family, not those suffering
Life Without Ed is a wonderful book if you are trying explain to a loved one what having an eating disorder is like. As a recovering anorexic and bulimic, I would recommend this only to loved ones, not to women suffering from a disorder. While the book gives glimmers of hope, it is also very triggering. There were often parts in the book where Jennie would describe an eating disordered behavior that I had not tried before. If you are looking for a recovery book, this is not for you. I would recommend "Eating in the Light of the Moon" or "Goodbye Ed, Hello Me".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for all Eating Disorder Sufferers
Jenni writes with candid insight into the experience of living with and recovering from an eating disorder.A must read for all who seek to recover from eating disorders!Exceptionally inspirational!

Product Description

I've never had anorexia, but I know it well. I see it on the street, in the gaunt and sunken face, the bony chest, the spindly arms of an emaciated woman. I've come to recognize the flat look of despair, the hopelessness that follows, inevitably, from years of starvation. I think: That could have been my daughter. It wasn't. It's not. If I have anything to say about it, it won't be.

Millions of families are affected by eating disorders, which usually strike young women between the ages of fourteen and twenty. But current medical practice ties these families' hands when it comes to helping their children recover. Conventional medical wisdom dictates separating the patient from the family and insists that "it's not about the food," even as a family watches a child waste away before their eyes. Harriet Brown shows how counterproductive—and heartbreaking—this approach is by telling her daughter's story of anorexia. She describes how her family, with the support of an open-minded pediatrician and a therapist, helped her daughter recover using family-based treatment, also known as the Maudsley approach.

Chronicling her daughter Kitty's illness from the earliest warning signs, through its terrifying progression, and on toward recovery, Brown takes us on one family's journey into the world of anorexia nervosa, where starvation threatened her daughter's body and mind. But hope and love—of the ordinary, family-focused kind—shine through every decision and action she and her family took. Brave Girl Eating is essential reading for families and professionals alike, a guiding light for anyone who's coping with this devastating disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to the Science Behind Anorexia
Harriet Brown's book is one of the first memoirs about anorexia to address the neuroscience underlying the illness, and in so doing dispels yet another myth about mental disorders. As Brown writes, people don't choose anorexia; it chooses them. When someone who is genetically vulnerable diets and loses a critical percentage of body weight, it triggers neurochemical (and, one wonders, perhaps also neuroanatomical, or "wiring?") changes in the brain that impel her to restrict her caloric intake and to fear food, sending her into a potentially deadly, downward spiral of food restriction and further weight loss. Brown also argues forcefully that families can very successfully participate in the treatment, or "re-feeding," of children and teens with anorexia. This is a deeply personal and deeply humane look at a brutal illness, and offers hope and inspiration not only to families contending with anorexia, but really any mental illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave Girl Eating
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and could not put it down.It is extremely well written and very insightful.I was educated on newer treatments for anorexia. It is a honest view of the myths that plague this condition.I was enlightened about how society is quick to pass judgement on a family when the disease caused the appearance of a "dysfunctional family".I would recommend this book !!Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Painfully accurate, yet helpful read
As someone closely involved in an on-going, year-long battle with anorexia, I can attest to the accuracy of Harriet Brown's "Brave Girl Eating".This is the 4th book I've read so far on this horrible illness and the impact eating disorders (ED) have on the individual suffering and the family. This may also be the most helpful and supportive book I've read for several reasons.

First off Harriet Brown has lived the nightmare and writes from a completely different perspective than that presented by the professionals in the field. "Brave Girl Eating" is a reflection of what it is like to live with ED as it takes its toll on the individual with the disorder and the family. As I read Ms. Brown's recollections of meal-time battles, visits with doctors and therapists, the "re-feeding" process, and adapting to life with ED, I found myself frequently nodding in both agreement and sympathy.

Journalist Brown has also done her research and clearly explains the various schools of thought on what causes eating disorders (the jury is still out) and how to best approach treatment. Ms. Brown is clearly an advocate of the Maudsley approach which is a Family Based Therapy (FBT) approach: one in which the family is NOT blamed for the disorder AND is very much involved in the treatment and recovery process. She references Lock, James, and le Grange's Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder (also *****) which was the first book I'd read on eating disorders and is also a great resource.

"Brave Girl Eating" is a well researched and educational read as well as one that is heartbreaking and all-too-real. Yet it is ultimately inspirational and uplifting and I gained a lot of emotional strength from Harriet Brown and "Kitty's" perseverance and bravery. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Myth-busting, dramatic exploration of a family dealing with a daughter's anorexia
Reading Harriet Brown's excellent book I couldn't help thinking of The Exorcist -- in which the innocent child Regan is possessed by a demon, spewing obscenities, repelling all attempts to cast out the evil force that is threatening her life. Just as inexplicable and life-threatening is the sudden possession of 14-year-old Kitty Brown by the demon of anorexia which spawns self-hatred and the uncontrollable urge to punish herself through the withholding of food.

When I titled my review "myth-busting" I meant that, before reading this book I thought of eating disorders as the neuroses of the hyperprivileged raised by mothers who bought into the "a woman can't be too thin or too rich" credo. But Harriet Brown is grounded, well-informed; her family is functional and loving; the message she and her husband have always given to their daughters is of acceptance of the full range of healthy body sizes. So when Kitty starts limiting her diet to a few leaves of lettuce and a precisely-counted number of grapes, wasting away before her family's eyes, erupting into tirades that seem voiced by some alien within her that calls her a pig, disgusting, worthless, Harriet is mystified and fearful.

Despite inept therapists and obstructive insurance companies, and books that perpetuate outdated and downright damaging information, Brown rallies her journalistic discipline and her lioness-mother heart to save her daughter's life, and, by the book's end, has come to a place of hope. Not complete, easy triumph -- but hope. Her research leads her to FBT - Family Based Therapy, a grueling but effective treatment for anorexia that requires a family member to stay with the anorexic victim at all times, patiently coaxing her through every meal (which can take hours), making sure she doesn't purge afterward, helping to establish a zone of safety around the truly terrifying ordeal that eating has become.

It is amazing that this family weathered the trial of a mentally-ill family member and still stayed together, loving and supportive.Little Emma, ten at the onset of her sister's ordeal, is a voice of wry and often funny sanity. Jamie, Harriet's husband, doesn't understand, but remains a stand-up husband and dad. Kudos to this family. The book is a page-turner, and I would imagine a lifesaver for families and individuals experiencing this bizarre kind of hell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing read
I've spent the past year researching eating disorders for my senior thesis for college (studio art major doing an exhibition of the physical and emotional effects of eating disorders). This book was truly insightful into the effects that Anorexia has on both the person with the disease and the families of people with the disease. It was an absolute page turner, and I found myself tearing up at some points. Excellent read, I would suggest it to anyone, anywhere, anytime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who am I?
This book gives an excellent view of one of the main difficulties in overcoming an eating disorder.Ira Sacker draws from his years of experience helping people overcome what he calls the "eating disorder identity" and get to the true issues behind the behaviors.

2-0 out of 5 stars A somewhat mysteriousbook on Eating Disorders
This book may be a good introduction for those who have never read anything about eating disorders, but those familiar with the literature are likely to find themselves disappointed in this somewhat strange little book. While Dr Sacker is a well-known individual in the field, on examination, it's hard to really know just how much of this book he actually wrote. The book is attributed to Sacker "with" Shela Buff...yet we never once hear who she is, a fairly sure sign that the book has been ghost written. To compound the mystery, inside we find Laura McDonald M.S. given credit for "writing, editing and development of theory", as well as providing "heart and soul" to the book. Given both of these attributions, one begins to wonder just how much Dr. Sacker actually had to do with the production of this book.

Readers may also find the organization of the text irritating. Perhaps 50% of the pages contain excerpts from that page's text, extracted and highlighted in boxes of their own.In some instances the excerpts are direct quotes from the text, in others several sentences have been modified or combined to make new sentences.I found this unrelenting editorial convention to be obnoxious and distracting and other readers may find it the same.

In regards to the book's content, while case studies are mentioned, rarely, if ever, do we hear from the clients themselves. This sort of summarizing may leave many readers who have eating disorders themselves feeling like bystanders.

When we finally get to Dr Sacker's "Bold New Approach" we find that it consists of discovering the things in life that the client is truly passionate about, encouraging the client to pursue these passions, thereby establishing a more authentic self-identity to replace that which their ED currently provides them with. While this approach is a useful, honest and legitimate one, those familiar with ED treatment may find it somewhat simplistic, and not quite the bold and novel approach the book promises.

While Dr Sacker is obviously a caring and insightful individual, those familiar with the many good books on EDs currently in print may find themselves left wondering about the nature of Dr Sacker's connection to it, and how and why it came to be written in the first place.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good framework but lacking practical guidance
I found this book to be of interest so far as framing the core issues surrounding eating disorders. However it is lacking in practical application.I did not find any concrete guidance on what I could do myself to attack these issues. Instead the author focuses on his prowess in the theraputic environment and offers little advice on how to find a similar environment or tangible activities a person suffering from a disorder can follow. There are many web links and organizations listed in the back - but that does little to guide me on where to go from here.I think the book is ultimately better for the therapist versus the patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars " Innovative and Informative"
I really enjoyed reading the book "Regaining Your Self" by Ira M. Sacker. Having had an eating disorder in my teens, I found this book both innovative and informative. His approach is transformational. Dr. Sacker's approach known as PIRT - Personal Interactive Rational Therapy. This approach provides a basic framework that moves the patient toward their own personal recovery. I found this book to be compassionate, intuitive, heart felt and honest.

Another book I read and really enjoyed was Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life by award winning authors Ariel and Shya Kane. This book is refreshing and light, and a wonderful way to assist in freeing yourself from your old perceptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for someone battling ED!
I've struggled with an eating disorder (ED) for over 10 years now.Last year I was admitted to Remuda Ranch in AZ for inpatient treatment.Had I not gone doctor's say I would have died a week later. So, now I'm one year into recovery and realize it's an everyday, no, every minute battle. My mom saw this book advertised and bought it for me.I can relate to it so much it's really ridiculous!I'll be feeling one way that is so indescribable, then turn the page, and read my feelings word for word! When you are sick with an eating disorder, finding someone or anything to relate to is close to impossible. This book explains perfectly what someone with ED goes through before, during, and after treatment!I've told my family and friends that if they want to know me, they need to read this book.I'm so grateful for this book as it's given me a voice in the midst of the most horrifying battle I've ever faced. ... Hello Marcia,
I am a nutritionist somewhat new to the field of eating disorders (2004). I am re-reading your treatment manual for the second time. I find it such a useful tool. I was justmoved to let you know how wonderful it is to receive this information.
When I am in doubt, your book sets me straight.
Thank you for putting all this out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7 Stars on a 5-Star Scale: an Excellent Continued Education Cross-Trainer!
As a psychologist in practice, in picking up this book on nutrition counseling by a nutrition expert, I was expecting psychotherapy to be accorded its usual short shrift and after-thought status that seems so common for the nutritional literature on eating disordrs. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is the book calling for a non-nominal coordination of nutritional and psychological disciplines, the nutritional angle itself is presented with an extraordinary degree of psychological savvy.

Case in point: in addition to the coverage of various psychological treatment paradigms, the book offers process suggestions for nutritional counselors on managing self-disclosure, splitting, idealization, countertransference. The first two chapters are smartly subdivided into basic nutritional counseling (more educational in scope) and advanced nutrtional counseling that integrates nutritional counseling and psychotherapy.

While empirically authoritative and technically comprehensive, the book is also highly pragmatic. Dr. Herrin continuously offers direct speech suggestions of how to pitch a certain educational theme or tid-bit to a prospective client.Throughout the book, the reader keeps stumbling upon highly practical counseling gems that begin with "explan this" or "you might want to say this."This pragmatic refrain helps the reader to pause and translate the material into hypothetical counseling exchanges.

I particularly appreciated the no-nonsense harm-reduction orientation of the book: this is most evident in the discussion of normalizing the relationship with "fun foods," as well as in the discussion of managing binge-eating through paradoxical harm-reduction binge-schedulng alternatives.

The "intervention" core of the book, consisting of the following five chapters, is impeccable: "Weight Management," "Managing Weight Restoration" (a euphemism for "weight gain/weight normalization"), "Managing Binge Eating," "Managing Purging," and "Exercise Management."

Herrin's amazingly effective: page for page she offers tremendous informational density - without (!) creating a sense of informational satiation. Her narrative style feels light but never superficial. Her handling of the medical repercussions of purging is a wonderful example of that: in the span of just a few pages, Herrin manages to provide a panoramic overview of dental, electrolyte, cardiac, GI and other types of medical complications that can result from purging.

She offers a similarly effective overview of misuse of veganism/vegetarianism (as a socially sanctioned cover for restrictive eating), of eating pregnancy, and of other "special issues."She offers an extensive Appendix with forms, tables and handouts (check out Appendix E - "Recovery Plan" for binge-prevention and post-binge damage control).

In sum, the book seems to round out the respective educational-professional fortes of nutritional and psychological counselors.Nutritional counselors stand to learn more about the counseling aspect of nutritional counseling and psychologists working with eating disorders stand to learn more about the nutritional nuts and bolts of the eating disorder presentations that might otherwise be left unattended in the guilt-shame shade of client's ego-saving defenses.

Herrin's "Nutrition Counseling" is an excellent continued education cross-trainer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally worth the $35!!!!!!!!!!
As a student of nutrition/dietetics and as a girl who has had anorexia & bulimia for about 5 years, I found this text to be insightful, motivational, and practical. It helped me see how all the nutrition info and diet guidelines I have learned as a student REALLY DO apply to ME, even though I have an eating disorder. Thinking about diet therapy, eating patterns, and other food-related behaviors from a clinical perspective has helped me step outside myself and get a clearer view of my own behaviors. The book has helped me trust my body more and be more willing to experiment with dietary changes.

This book really emphasizes the fact that Registered Dietitians treating eating disordered patients cannot double as psychotherapists but must have a strong background in psychology to be successful. Food and eating is so central to our being. All nutritionists need to be aware of the psychological reasonings behind food behaviors (especially with eating disorders!!!) so that do-able dietary advise can be given.

What I learned from this book will make me a much better RD for all nutritional problems! I think all dietetics students should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical information with a thoughtful delivery
This book provides the information that Registered Dietitians need when working with patients struggling with eating disorders. It fills in the gap between a dietitians' final internship and years of hands on experience.Marcia understands what information patients need and how to deliver it.The tone of the book is right on, helping the reader understand the supportive educational role that dietitians should provide.I wish I wrote it first! ... Product Description

Eating disorders (EDs) affect at least 11 million people in the United States each year and spread across age, race, ethnicity and socio-economic class. While professional literature on the subject has grown a great deal in the past 30 years, it tends to be exclusively research-based and lacking expert clinical commentary on treatment. This volume focuses on just such commentary, with chapters authored by both expert clinicians and researchers. Core issues such as assessment and diagnosis, the correlation between EDs and weight and nutrition, and medical/psychiatric management are discussed, as are the underrepresented issues of treatment differences based on gender and culture, the applications of neuroscience, EDNOS, comorbid psychiatric disorders and the impact of psychiatric medications. This volume uniquely bridges the gap between theoretical findings and actual practice, borrowing a bench-to-bedside approach from medical research.

* Includes real-world clinical findings that will improve the level of care readers can provide, consolidated in one place
* Underrepresented issues such as gender, culture, EDNOS and comorbidity are covered in full
* Represents outstanding scholarship, with each chapter written by an expert in the topic area
