5-0 out of 5 stars Eating Disorders-Time for Change, Plans, Strategies and Work
As a therapist in the field of eating disorders for the past 19 years, I was excited to read a book that got to the heart of the concerns that therapists bring to the table when working with people experiencing eating disorders. The book helped me to think about the multitude of issues that permeate our work in the eating disorders field. I appreciated all the practical issues raised in the book, such as the therapist's use of food and drink, the therapist's attire and the many seemingly simplistic but truly complicated concerns that arise in the treatment relationship. This book is a wonderful teaching tool for all therapists in the field of eating disorders.

Helping Your Child Overcome an Eating Disorder is comprehensive, practical, and filled with scientifically based strategies for parents of children with bulimia or anorexia, written by the directors of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. This guide shows parents how to talk with their children about this touchy subject, access the latest cognitive-behavioral techniques, deal with eating and exercise in the home, find a good therapist, and take charge of ensuring a child's recovery. The book explores issues like depression and anxiety and includes questionnaires, checklists for ongoing evaluation, and charts for monitoring and developing positive eating patterns. 3-0 out of 5 stars Better than much of what I've come across so far.
Bethany Teachman et al., Helping Your Child Overcome an Eating Disorder (New Harbinger Publications, 2003)

I like the way this book is laid out; a good portion of it is in workbook form, for you to write down answers to the questions the authors ask you as they go along. It's also relatively easy reading, and clearly written.

As with, seemingly, most books on the subject of childhood and teen eating disorders, the authors tend to focus more on anorexia and bulimia than binge eating disorder, but not to the extent of some of the books I've either read or skimmed on the subject. And the authors do address the subject more in depth than a number of books.

3-0 out of 5 stars a good try
this is a great workbook for people who have the time for a lot of writing and reflection -- and willpower to stay on track. an avid reader and searcher for all things pertaining to the treatment of eating disorders, i did not find this book to be much help above and beyond what you normally read in all the other "self help" books. Basically, it summarizes the other books and puts it into question/answer form. it also does not go into each area deeply enough to provide what i would consider lasting effects of treatment from the reflection. a good therapist and support group and/or network of support will do better than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was so helpful
This book was so helpful in helping me better understand eating disorders and how they act as coping mechanisms.I used to think it was just about the wish to look better and lose weight. I now really understand how psychological it is, and this book was so insightful in helping me put together the skills and tools I need to recover from my eating disorder.I would, without hesitation, recommend this book to anyone struggling with an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me so much
I have anorexia for a year and it is so hard. I feel like nobody understands and my friends think I am weird and don't want to be friends anymore but when I read this book I felt like finally someone understands and I don't have to live like this anymore. I am not all better yet but I am working hard and this book helps a lot. I wish my friends would read it and that teachers could understand that I don't do this on purpose. The chapter for parents helped my mom alot. I hope anybody that has an eating disorder can read ths book and get help. And I hope that someone writes a book for friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disagree with the others
This book is a much needed book. It has a unique flair and is incredibly invaluable for anyone in recovery. I have been using it with my therapist and have found it to be helping my recovery above and beyond what I would be doing in just my sessions alone.I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a task oriented approach to therapy.

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of the same material, done again
I think the concept of the book is a great one, but it would be helpful to talk more about recovery from a personal perspective. The book has a lot of material that I have read before, it is just rewritten a different way.

I also think it is too pricey. ... Read more

Book Description

Art Therapy and Eating Disorders is a step-by-step approach to a new and extremely promising technique for treating people with eating disorders -- children as well as adults, male and female sufferers alike -- that has proven to be a crucial aid to identification, prevention, and intervention. Mury Rabin demonstrates how her award-winning art therapy technique, known as Phenomenal and Nonphenomenal Body Image Tasks or "PNBIT," can be used by clinicians other than art therapists and shows its effectiveness in combination with diverse therapeutic techniques.

Unlike traditional therapy programs that treat symptoms, this technique focuses on root causes and consists of a series of tasks -- some phenomenal: weight recording, mirror viewing, and body dimension estimates; others not: chromatic family line drawings and body image mandalas. The book includes five case studies that illustrate how the PNBIT technique functions in practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Note the author has written two different books that Amazon lumps together
Expanding on a point made by a previous reviewer, I'd like to clarify something about these great books -- Dr. Keel has two different books available -- but Amazon has lumped them together as one entry.

The earlier text (2004 edition) that is a paperback/soft cover is a more advanced book geared towards a more advanced audience (college students, graduate students, health care professionals). The previous reviewer referred to this as the 'expanded' text.

The later text (2006) that is labeled hardcover/library binding, is actually aimed at a younger audience (junior high/senior high school students).

But both serve an valuable niche in this important field.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Eating Disorder Book Ever
This is the most thorough, well researched eating disorder book I have found.(I did send this edition back to Amazon because I wanted the newer, expanded paperback version.)I highly recommend both books but I was particularly happy with the expanded edition.I am shocked that it has taken such a long time for someone to write an intelligent book on eating disorders that is accessible to both professionals and the general public as well. This is a book that everyone with an interest in Eating Disorders should own.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on eating disorders I've seen so far
One difficulty that I have had as a psychologist is finding good books to recommend to others that actually incorporate recent research and make it available to the reader in a manageable fashion. All too often, eating disorders books seem to be like many generic self-help books - having a greater filling of anecdotes and personal accounts than of actual substance. Up until now, I really couldn't recommend a book on this subject to colleagues or friends.

This book seems to fill an overlooked niche. It is a book that would be appropriate for a college course on the topic, but it also serves as an excellent and up-to-date overview for anyone interested in anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. A unique aspect of this book is that it discusses the complexity of eating disorders - addressing both the biological and environmental influences in easy to understand language (for college students, counselors, or even Moms and Dads). Plus, the chapter on prevention is a welcome addition that most authors overlook.

Dr. Keel (formerly at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital) is clearly one of the stars in this field. And she brings her clinical, research, and teaching expertise to bear in creating a book that should be on the bookshelf of every clinician and clinical professor. Moreover, it's a book you can give to friends or relatives who just want to educate themselves about eating disorders. Highly recommended and worth reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful book
Take Charge of Your Child's Eating Disorder is one of the best books available on how to deal with an eating disordered child. In fact, I own two copies: one that is autographed by Pam Carlton, and the other which is underlined and marked throughout. The chapter dealing with insurance companies alone is worth the price of the book, and the tips provided throughout this enlightening book will be invaluable to any parent who is facing the daunting task of helping their child recover from an eating disorder.

Buddy Howard

5-0 out of 5 stars Physician walks her talk.
Take Charge of Your Child's Eating Disorder is a 5 star book. This book is by far the most complete and concise book I have read for parents who are struggling with this life threatening disorder. I have two copies in our EDRS lending library, and can not keep them in stock! Dr. Carlton begins by helping parents talk about their concerns with their child, and leads them step by step through the process ofthe first doctor's appointment, the necessity of a treatment team,as well as what to expect if their child needs higher levels of care. Dr. Carltons' breadth of knowledge is evident by the information she gives regarding how to create a supportive environment at home, how to deal with siblings, who to tell, and how to deal with questions from family and friends. Clear, compassionate advice is given on how to work with teachers and school administrators when a child has missed school work due to intensive treatment. The feedbacks I have received from the parents in my practice have been, "The chapter and sample letters on dealing with insurance companies alone is worth the price of the whole book!"
Dr. Carlton is a physician who walks her talk. She has been an invaluable member of more than one of my treatment teams.
She gave me the information I needed to help my families deal with insurance denials before the publication of this book. Her assistance in this area was pivotal to my clients' recovery, and quite possibly saved a life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Parents, beware
If you're a parent looking for guidance from a physician who supports families as they help their child recover from an eating disorder, stop right here. You won't find such guidance in this book. Despite claims of the author to the contrary, this book does NOT support families but rather offers the same old same old advice from yet another so-called eating disorders expert who seems to understand little about how to help patients and families. I was offended by this book's know-it-all tone and condescension toward parents and families. There are already plenty of titles like this out there, sadly; no need to add one more. There are far better books out there on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a practical book for parents, filled with insight from an MD who *specializes* in EDs!
After battling an eating disorder of my own for years, I know what works and what doesn't.I have also seen, firsthand, the tedious journey parents go through when caring for a child with an eating disorder.Even though I am now in recovery, both my parents and I have read this book and were immensely impressed. My parents learned things about my disorder that, until now, they still had trouble grasping. My mother has recommended it to a close friend whose daughter was just diagnosed with Anorexia, saying that "she wishes she had read this book about ten years ago" [when my eating disorder began].Make sure to read the insurance chapter and Appendix G . . . both my parents went through hell and back--with little to no guidance/help--in trying to get insurance companies to extend my coverage for the eating disorder.
Overall, Dr. Carlton's book is filled with informative + practical advice, coupled with evidence-based strategies to help your child overcome an eating disorder!

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Charge of Your Child's Eating Disorder
This is a fascinating and easy to read book with touching testimonies.
It provides powerful and practical tools for parents. It's like having Dr. Calton hold your hand and walk you through this challenging journey as you face the knowledge that your child has eating disorders. Unavailable elsewhere, the sample letters in this book make strong claims to insurance companies.

Book Description

This important work illuminates the relationship between the anguish of eating disorder sufferers and the problems of ordinary women. It covers a wide variety of issues from ways in which gender may predispose women to eating disorders to the widespread cultural concerns these problems symbolize. Chapters all share three basic elements: The psychology of women is reflected in the concepts and methods described; there is an explicit commitment to political and social equality for women; and therapy is reevaluated based on an understanding of the needs of women patients and the potentially differing contributions of male and female therapists.

4-0 out of 5 stars reveals dearth of serious feminist theorizing about EDs
This collection of twenty-two essays by therapists, professors, researchers, and philosophers explores the sociocultural phenomenon of eating disorders from a feminist perspective, working through questions of theory and application with an eye toward cultivating a better-informed approach to the epidemic. The book begins with some historical framing, includes a section on the issues that mere fact of having a body raise for patient and therapist, deals with questions of textuality and discourse, and calls for a feminist model of treatment and recovery as well as a redefined research agenda for the entire field. Two important essays, Marcia Germaine Hutchinson's "Imagining Ourselves Whole: A Feminist Approach to Treating Body Image Disorders" and Deborah L. Tolman and Elizabeth Debold's "Conflicts of Body and Image: Female Adolescents, Desire, and the No-Body Body," unsettle the position of woman within speech and society by using the compound "body-image" to show how woman stands as both speaking, acting subject (body) and passive gazed-at object or picture (image).

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-explicated series of works on a ubiquitous problem
The authors delve into some of the least-examined aspects of eating disorders with grace and insight. This is the book that the eating disorder literature has needed: one that incorporates a feminist perspective, involves cultural considerations, and combines theory with research for adynamic text.

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST READ for anyone who thinks their kid's got an ED
this book is so so so helpful-- we thought an eating disorder could only happen in someone who looks emaciated and sick, and never eats anything, but when we were confronted with something more than 'picky eating' but less than what we imagined actual eds to be, we checked this book out and it helped immensely.eds happen in the best kids and even in kids who still look pretty healthy--especially when they're growing, according to this book, it can be hard to tell just by looking at someone if they have a problem.also if someone just eats less, but still eats, they can still have anorexia.i highly recommend this book for clearing up what eds actually are, and who can help you-- they talk about what you can do but the bottom line is you have to seek help outside of the family sometimes, as much as you want to be able to "fix it" parents just can't do everything and sometimes someone else knows better than you how to help your kids.nutritionists, therapists, doctors-- they can all be a really good help getting your kids back on track.but this book is such a blessing for parents who don't know whether they've got a problem on their hands or not, and if they do, what to do.thank you to the authors for your wonderful advice!

5-0 out of 5 stars An important read for any parent worried about their child's eating
This book is full of extremely useful advice for any parent, but particularly for parents of adolescents and pre-adolescents with any kind of eating disturbance. If you've noticed your daughter or son eating less, noticed any unusual habits around eating, this book can help you figure out if there's something wrong and what you should do. These authors obviously know what they're talking about and know how to speak to parents on their level, not above or below. They use lots of examples of kids in all sorts of situations, which made their descriptions really easy to follow. This is an easy read, sometimes entertaining but always really informative, and really, really helpful for a worried parent who's at a loss for what to do with their child.

5-0 out of 5 stars impressed by this book
By writing about situtations parents and kids working through issues around reading disorders experience, and then explaining ways the family could problem-solve, this book gently informs about the hard to define struggle of eating disorders. It's well written, with an easy-to-read flow. ... Read more

Book Description
Aimee Liu, who wrote Solitaire, the first-ever memoir of anorexia, in 1979, returns to the subject nearly three decades later and shares her story and those of the many women in her age group of life beyond this life-altering ailment. She has extensively researched the origins and effects of both anorexia and bulimia, and dispels many commonly held myths about these diseases with the persuasive conclusion that anorexia is a result of personality. Key revelations include: the temperament required for eating disorders, the long-term effects of eating disorders on health, brain function, relationships and career, why some individuals recover while others relapse, and why many relapse in mid-life,Which treatment approaches are most successful long-term and how parents can tell if a child will be vulnerable to eating disorders.Using her own experience and the stories of many recovering anorexics she's interviewed, Liu weaves together a narrative that is both persuasive in argument and compelling in personal details. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Offers hope and support for those in recovery
'Gaining' is the best book I've read related to eating disorders. So many books out there get bogged down in the details of anorexia and/or bulimia. This is the first I have read that tells about life after all that.I'm in recovery after 15 years of bulimia, and this book was a catalyst in helping to push me into that next step of recovery.'Gaining' explains that there is no prescribed path to health; while we are alike in many ways, we may need different things along the way to make it. Liu and the women she writes about show that reaching wellness is possible AND worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living with eating disorders
This book needed to be written and thankfully, it finally has. Nearly all other books on eating disorders focus on women in their teens and twenties. The author sees the bigger picture of living with eating disorders both in and out of recovery over the women's lives. Rather than giving false hope that EDs can be vanquished forever, Aimee Liu explores the personality traits involved and their impact on women with EDs. She shares the latest research that emphasizes that this is like most other mental health problems-- has genetic components and not caused by "bad parenting", like we were taught in social work school. Far from delivering a discouraging sentence, Liu shares how people with EDs have learned to focus their perfectionism and drive, many achieving impressive career successes. As a parent of a daughter who is working hard on her recovery, Liu's beautifully written and wise book calmed my fears for my daughter's future. Thank you, Aimee Liu, for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever For Eatings Disorders
I have been anorexic and still think like one. This book captures my past experiences, feelings, and how I am still very attached to a series of the same thought patterns. I found myself practically highlighting whole pages to share with my therapist. It is the first time I found someone who truly understood the whole process of anorexia, repeated almost my exact thoughts then and now. So few people understand anorexia. It has nothing to do with food, vanity, or age. I was 40 before I first became anorexic. Anorexia is about needing control of something in your life. Becoming thin is a side benefit. I was the happiest, had the highest self-esteem, and felt in total control than I ever had before. It was a long process to be convinced I was actually sick and in health danger. The truth is I would love to be physically anorexic right now. I felt empowered and proud of my self-discipline. Just knowing that when I put my jeans on they would be loose and comfortable or that I could wear any bathing suit I wanted was a huge high. This author acknowledges what anorexia is really like, how the afflicted really feel and think, and how it still follows you even when you return to a "safe" weight. Reading this book was the first time I felt totally understood and had someone who could express my exact feelings and thoughts and my reasoning behind them. It is the absolute best book I have ever read on an eating disorder. It made me cry to finally have my battle validated with such truth and accuracy. Aimee Liu has given the words to what we with eating disorders have so desperately needed to speak both our elation and our pain. OUTSTANDING AND RE-READABLE WHEN YOU NEED IT. GIVE A COPY TO EVERYONE WHO HAS TOLD YOU TO "JUST EAT".

5-0 out of 5 stars candid and compelling
Ms. Liu examines eating disorders with a fascinating dual perspective. She balances the realities of her own experience with the science attempting to discover what lies beneath the illnesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Gaining" Is Healing
I am sure almost anyone who has delt with an eating disorder will agree that the single most important thing to remember while in recovery is that there is hope. For over ten years, I have struggled with my own ED and this is the first time that a book deals with so much and makes you feel like you are not alone and that if they can overcome then so shall I. This book is an excellent source of information, research, help, advice, stories you can relate to and so on. Anyone who has ever wonder what to do, how to recover and needs a push in the right direction, I suggest you read this book. ... Read more

Book Description

State the editors, "Eating Disorders present a challenge to clinicians in terms of diagnosis as well as treatment. Often [patients with them] fall between the cracks, being too medically ill for many psychiatrists and not understood by many primary care physicians... This manuscript has as its main goal a hands-on, user-friendly comprehensive guide to the medical care and complications of eating disorders for primary care clinicians: family physicians, internists, pediatricians, and others... The method is to start each chapter with a series of questions that will be answered in the chapter, to use clinical vignettes where appropriate to give the chapter life and applicability."

Topics discussed in early chapters include: team treatment, medical evaluation of the patient, principles of diagnosis and treatment, and nutritional rehabilitation. Subsequent chapters address potential complications, organized by organ system: gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, gynecological, endocrinological, and oral and dental. The final chapters are concerned with special issues, such as athletes with eating disorders, obesity, medical tests, and health concerns for nonphysicians.

This book will be read by professionals and students in primary care (family medicine, pediatrics) as well as mental health care (psychiatry and psychology).

5-0 out of 5 stars A short well written book on Medical Aspects of Eating Disorders
This book is a gem.It is clearly written and well edited. In spite of its brevity (perhaps because of it!)it manages to pack into a neat and organized package most of the key clinical info that I need to fulfill my role as Medical Director of a Partial Hospital for E.D.s.This book helped me remember and retain (and have quickly available for cases), all the basic Medicine knowledge that is pertinent to my role;knowledge that I needed to be a Physician in the broad and well-rounded way that is necessary when treating women who are not only psychiatrically challenging, but who are often quite sick due to medical complications of their disorder.Beautifully done, and a pleasure to read as well! ... Book Description
Eating disorders–including anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating–are among the most painful and difficult illnesses a person can face. Sufferers know firsthand the confusion and agony these illnesses can bring. They also know how it feels to long for hope–and to wonder if victory can ever be achieved.

The truth is, eating disorders affect the whole person. Yet treatments often focus on emotional issues alone. In this powerful book for individuals who suffer from eating disorders and those who love them, Dr. Gregg Jantz fills in the gaps left by traditional treatment programs, tackling not only the emotional, but also the crucial and all-too-often ignored relational, physical, and spiritual dimensions of healing.

Outlining a comprehensive, holistic, and practical approach, Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders brings spiritual, relational, and physical elements back into the healing process. Described by best-selling author and physician Lendon Smith, author of Feed Your Kids Right, as “the most helpful book on eating disorders there is,” this book will, with God’s help and grace, lead readers out of their bondage to eating disorders and permanently transform lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This book is a must read for anyone who has been touched by eating disorders! Dr. Jantz walks the reader through the pain and issues, always from a loving, compassionate- and relevant - Christian approach. The reader is guided to greater tools of healing and recovery through this book; the journal and "workbook" aspects of it alone, shine a much needed light of God's love and truth to the individual and to the disorder. It is a must read for those afflicted in any way, as well as for those within the field of eating disorder treatment and recovery!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great concepts for treating eating disorders
I am aminister that does counseling with individuals struggling with a variety of issues including eating disorders.

Over and over again I find that the issues that Dr. Jantz address in this book are common among those I counsel. Especially the area of unforgiveness. I am convinced that unforgiveness is the #1 root of much mental illness, addictions, and emotional instability.

I really appreciate Dr. Jantz's whole-person approach to the treating of eating disorders. Too many times counselors and treatment facilities only deal with changing behavior and ignore the other areas of a person's life. Based upon my experience, unless all areas of a person's life is addressed they will not experience long term recovery.

Reading teh book you come to understand that Dr. Jantz is interested in more than a person having victory over eating disorders-his goal is for them to become a whole person in all areas of their life.

2-0 out of 5 stars wasn't as helpful as I thought it would be.
As a woman of God, I looked to this book for hope and faith that one day I'll overcome my eating disorder. I am currently 2 years into recovery from EDNOS.

However, although this book isn't as bad as "the best little girl in the world," I was not pleased. I felt like it was going no where. I didn't really get any answers at all. The continuous repetitive thoughts going through my mind basically read "okay, but... I already knew that... what's next?"

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!
If you are not a religious person, don't waste your time. Too much God and not enough healing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time!
I was first attracted to this book because it had exactly what I have been looking for- a list of questions and activities to do at the end of each chapter to help you recover. I do not agree with the approach the auther took at ALL. I admit, I didn't finish the book. I was THAT annoyed with it. It seemed to start down the trail of claiming that all eating disorders stem from some sort of abuse or another. The way it is written, it has you blame anyone you want; it seems as though the author is just setting you up for wanting revenge. At first I tried to follow along, but soon realized I was making up events and completely exaggerating things, just to "fit" into their mold that my eating disorder is a direct cause from abuse.

Maybe this book helps people who really do have abuse issues that caused their eating disorder. I don't know, so I can't review this book for those people. But if you, like me, have had no history of abuse, don't even bother thumbing through this one. Just move on to the next book. ... Read more

Book Description

Along with specific skills and techniques that help promote change, the book presents a proven cognitive-behavioral model of transformation that targets beliefs, feelings, and behaviors about food and eating and points the way toward genuine physical and emotional fulfillment. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for Those Wanting to be a Normal Eating
I found this book to be extremely helpful in the process of overcoming a long term eating disorder.Having been both anorexic and overweight, this book has offered me hope in teaching me to read my bodie's clues and to begin to trust them.I appreciate that while the author is honest in saying that becoming a normal eater requires hard work, she also impart's hope to both those who have totally learned to ignore their body's clues that they are full and those who have have learned to ignore physcial hunger and have lived under the tyranny of food diaries and counting calories and fat grams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Koenig goes beyond the simple rules of intuitive eating into the heart of the issue
This book is an excellent read for those dealing with emotional eating. I'm not finished with this book. Yet, every time I read it, I learn something new. Her voice is compassionate and assertive. And, she explores the emotional issues that drive us to eat rather than feel. Plus, Koenig doesn't overwhelm the reader with a lot of psycho-babble. She's firmly rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy, which empowers emotional eaters to deal with their issues head on.

Koenig also states that, like alcoholism, emotional eaters will never be cured, but will be a work in progress. It taught me to stop, think, and listen to my heart and body. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that makes sense!
I have been an emotional and binge eater with a history of related eating disorders.I have tried most diets out there, own most books on healthy eating that have come out since the 70s, and have exercised both moderately and to excess.I have never been able to find whatever it is to keep me at a healthy weight -- until now.

It has always maddened me that people (such as DH) are able to eat normally and never worry about calories or food groups or weight. This book has helped me understand why they can do it and I can't.It also contains exercises to help me understand the relationship that my beliefs, feelings, and actions have on my life, and exercises to help me replace some of my unhealthy beliefs, feelings, and actions with healthier ones.I highly recommend this book to anyone who had struggled with weight and food issues.

I also recommend her workbook, The Food and Feelings Workbook: A Full Course Meal on Emotional Health which takes the ideas in this book a step further and is filled with information and exercises to help continue the self-work it takes to finally become a more normal eater.

I have been practicing the principles in this book and have begun working in the workbook.A month later (after ditching all diet books and ideas) I have lost a few pounds (normally the absence of a diet would mean an incredible weight gain) and am more relaxed around food. The best things this has given me is the ability to focus on other things in my life and not have every waking thought revolve around what I just ate, what I am eating, and what I am going to eat next and when.

Is this process easy? No, not really. Is it worth it?You bet!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money for a salad
i think this book is more for undereaters than emotional eaters. it did not tell me how to do with my feelings at all. this book is for people who dread coming to the dinner table which i dont. i love how at the end of the chapter how they want you to explain to your family and friend that you are trying to eat normally if they like it or not but this book does not help you unless you are anorexic.

5-0 out of 5 stars From hopelessness to normalcy
Probably the most complete, step by step book ever written for those dealing with dysfunctional eating. Karen gets directly to the core issues and beliefs and thus setting the stage for the reader to create a pathway to freedom. Feelings are survivable, although so many of us will do anything not to feel them. When you are staring at the kitchen cupboard looking for food when you are not hungry, there were thoughts, feelings and beliefs that brought you there. This book, coupled with her "Food and Feelings Workbook" truly provide the way out of the labarynth. ... Read more
