4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not user friendly
This is an excellent workbook ofbeginning to intermediate business statistics that needs some refinement to be great. You do not need to know calculus (although it would help)to understand all the concepts in this book. I highly recommend this book as a statistics workbook for other statistics book such as "Statistics for People who Hate Statistics". This book does not cover advanced statistics that require strong knowledge of calculus.

Statistics is the principal language in business mathematics. Whenever there is a need to crunch a lot of data, statistics becomes central to the analysis of the data to make meaningful conclusions, decisions, and predictions. Because of exponential growth of data and data crunching capabilities brought on by the Information Technology revolution, the utility of statistics in the business world is greater than ever. If your organization utilizes data mining and analytics and Six Sigma, for example, your understanding of your business and your ability to make good strategic and tactical decisions will be greatly enhanced with the knowledge of statistics outlined in this book. Simply put, statistics is a powerful tool (not only for business).

The book covers the following concepts:

1)Analyzing Business Data
2)Graphs
3)Descriptive Measures
4)Dispersion
5)Probability
6)Binomial, Normal, hypergeometric, and poission distribution
7)Sampling and confidence intervals
8)Hypotheses and testing them.
9)Chi Square
10)ANOVA
11)Regression and correlation
12)Business forecasting
13)Decision analysis
14)Statistical Process Control.

My main problem with this book is its usability. There are many typos. For example, on page 127, one of the equation states "(30)(0.20)=60" when the answer clearly should have been "6.0". In addition, many questions are unnecessarily cumbersome adding to the frustration of learning statistics. For example,in the Chapter 10 "Testing Hypothesis", question 10.11 refers to q 10.10 which refers to q 10.9 which refers to q 10.3 which refers to q 10.2 which finally refers to q 10.1. Trying to solve some of the problems on that chapter left me upset with the unnecessarily complex web of question referrals.

Overall, this is a very useful workbook on Business Statistics with decent explanations and good work problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
very good book----I never read statistics before. Now I am securing A grade in weekly assignment refering this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as sleepy as the average Statistics Book...
But still as boring as watching grass grow!Honestly, the methodology of statistics/economics/finance/accounting, etc: is a major "yawn" for many.I personally excel at "applied economics", in other words, "How does this affect me/you/us?"

My professor used this book as a supplement to his "Statistics II" class, and it was "above average" in that regard, as was he.

Just remember, if you need this type of book to understand the methodology of "bean-counting", then this is better than any other I've seen in it's type.IT IS A VERY HARD SUBJECT, SO YOU MUST BREAK YOUR BACK AND CONCENTRATE- THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU TO DO THAT.THERE IS NO MAGIC-BULLET BOOK, that I know of, FOR STATISTICS II!!!STUDY HARD!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand. Lots of exercises.
As a teacher I have found this book very practical for my students. It has plenty of resolved exercises, 100% of them focused on Business and Economics. Also this book introduces Statistics in a more "informal" way that makes it easier for a non-mathematician student to understand. It lacks strong statistic theory so if you are looking for a more profound book this is not what you would like to choose. But in terms of exercises is the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to understand Statistics!
Another fine book by Schaum's outline. For anyone who has lost touch with the world of statistics, this book is a must read.It has clear definitions, examples and complicated explanations if you wish to dig deeper.I recommend this book to all college students, undergraduate and even MBA students. For financial analysis, marketing, and social research, this book is wonderful. ... I ordered this new textbook in May.It arrived in time for me to begin classes, but the CD sleeve had been ripped from the pages of the book and had been discarded. The CD itself was loose within the pages of the book.It appeared to have scratches and smudges.I responded to the invitation from Amazon to send in a detailed review of the packaging, but I never received an answer. This is the first transaction I have had with Amazon that did not live up to their own promises.

Product Description

The World Economy brings together two reference works by Angus Maddison: The World Economy: A Millennial Perspective, first published in 2001 and The World Economy: Historical Statistics, published in 2003. This new edition contains Statlinks, a service providing access to the underlying data in Excel® format. These two volumes bring together estimates of world GDP for the past 2000 years and provide a unique perspective on the rise and fall of economies historically.

"One controversial clash of theories fueled by Maddison's data concerns the relative status of (growth in) the West versus the rest. The figures (in this book) are enriching economists' understanding of what make economies grow, and may even make it possible to reject some of the most prominent historical explanations." Diane Coyle, author of The Soulful Science, former economics editor of The Independent newspaper.

"A tour de force. What a wonderful gift for the new century." Robert Mundell, Nobel Prize winner and Professor of Economics, Columbia University.

"An essential reference for anyone interested in global development for many years to come." Paul Krugman, Professor of Economics, Princeton University.

"Quite simply a dazzling essay." Nicholas Eberstadt, American Enterprise Institute.

"Highly recommended . . . refreshing and full of historical information. An important book." Kisanhani F. Emizet, Kanzas University, writing in International Politics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference work

Maddison presents a systematic quantification of the economic performance of the world's nations over the very long term. This amazing collection of statistics, published under the auspices of the OECD, is a great reference work, but there is not much analysis.

Since 1000, world population has risen 22-fold, world GDP 300-fold, and GDP per head 13-fold. World GDP multiplied by six between 1950 and 1988, the biggest growth being in the years 1950-73.

Western Europe's income in 1000 was below those in Asia and North Africa. In the 14th century, it caught up with the world leader China. By 1820, its income was double that of the rest of the world, by 1913, six times.

Between 1913 and 1950, the Soviet Union's GDP per head grew by 1.76% a year, more than the USA's 1.61, the UK's 0.92 and Western Europe's 0.76. He observes that the Soviet Union had no unemployment and writes, "Under the old system, basic necessities (bread, housing, education, health, crèches and social services) had been highly subsidised by the government or provided free by state enterprises to their workers."

But the 1990-91 counter-revolutions ended all that. Wages and pensions were slashed and savings destroyed. In Belarus, Moldova, Russia and the Ukraine, just 2% of the population was in poverty in 1987-88, but 52% by 1993-95. In the four Central Asian states, poverty rose from 15% to 66%, in the three Baltic states, from 1% to 29%. Russia's GDP was 42% lower in 1998 than in 1990. Its fixed investment was just 17.5% of its 1990 level.

Maddison claims to assess the rich countries' exploitation of the poor. But when he looks at Britain's relationship with India, he gives statistics for only 12 years of the 72 from 1868 to the 1930s, claiming that this `covers' the whole period. So his case that Britain's rulers looted only from 0.9 to 1.3% of India's national income a year would seem to be not proven.

1-0 out of 5 stars Content doesn't match actual textbook
I've only gone through chapter 1 so far, and the questions that are in the solutions manual are completely different from the questions in the textbook.

Also, the manual only covers odd-numbered questions, and I can get at least some of those answers from the textbook answer key.

I was hoping this book would supplement the textbook by filling in the gaps in my knowledge. So far, that's not the case....

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect all the solutions
This solution manual only provides solutions for every other problem, so don't expect solutions for everything. Furthermore, the solutions provided are OK and not very in-depth. Personally, I'd buy it used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Delivery
I was very impressed with the delivery time of the book - it arrived before the estimated delivery date. The book also arrived in excellent condition as described in the ad. I will definitely patronize this seller again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book was delivered on time and was in the condition notified in the description. It wasnt perfect but it was pretty good, so Im happy. The book itself only lists the answers to only the even numbers which is somewhat of a nuisance in terms of doing practice on my own. However, its a guide nonetheless....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplement to Damodar Gujrati
As a student of Econometrics, I really liked the book by Damodar Gujrati though I feel that book has too few examples and is rather verbose. This book by Schaums could be an excellent supplement to Gujrati. The book covers basics for any student of Stats. Great price, nice examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a surprise!
This is an extremely useful book for review or as an adjunct to a conventional, mathematically dense econometrics text. The author writes in a lucid style that makes difficult ideas easy to understand. He makes liberal use of informative graphs and tables, and he includes numerous examples to clarify the explanations. If I encountered an econometric concept or procedure that simply defied understanding, this book would be the first place I'd turn for clarification. The author is blessed with the gift of succinctness:he says a great deal of substantive importance using very few words, and the words he chooses are just the right ones to help the reader understand what's going on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best you can buy for the price
I am giving four star because its coverage is really not good. But i knew that when I was buying it so it really deserve four star.
It is good if you want to remember things but its almost useless for graduate level. There are lots of topics missing and there is almost ni proof.
But for the pirce it is a good review book to many problems and examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars It got me through Econometrics

5-0 out of 5 stars Cartoon Guide to Statistics
I really am enjoying this book and it puts the humor factor into struggling through a Statistics class at a local university.I would recommend it for both the information and for the comic relief when Statistics gets just TOO stressful!
I have to say that service was excellent...I received the book in just a few days after ordering it and it was in excellent, brand new condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Serious yet not that practical
The content is of high quality and complex. This is not yet another statistics for dummies. If you have no background on statistics, you will be challenged reading this book. It doesn't water-down statistical concepts too much. It gives the conceptual (as opposed to totally quantitative view) of statistics in a cartoon format with plenty of well-thought out examples (both real life and hypothetical).

The downfall of this book, of course, is that it doesn't provide statistical practice problems and solutions. In my humble opinion, the best way to learn statistics, or any other quantitative subject, is through lot of practice and mental challenges. Although your conceptual understanding of statistics will be enhanced through this book, your actual applicable knowledge of statistics may still remain stagnant.

This might be a good first book or even a good review of statistics. But certainly, this book is not adequate for those who want to learn statistics for application to real data.

Still, this is immensely well contemplated book and I must congratulate the authors for creating a thought provoking statistics overview book without too many statistical equations and problems. I also enjoyed the cartoons and humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!!!!
I wish I had known about this book, the first time, I took Statistics. This book is helpful because it puts the formulas and problems in a more layman type explanation. My last instructor had a degree in mechanical enigineering & statistics; therefore, she taught the class as if everyone was on her level of knowledge with this crazy math!!! I love this book!! It is worth the money!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Comforting Cartoon Therapy for the Statphobic
This book was listed as an optional textbook for an introductory statistics class, placing it on a shelf in the campus bookstore next to a book I needed to buy.My eye was attracted by the cartoon cover and, after a quick scan, I decided to buy it.It was worth it.

Larry Gonick and Woollcott Smith cover the same content as many introductory statistics books. The eleven core chapters cover basic statistical concepts, the nature of data, and the essentials of probability, random variables, distributions, sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, comparing samples, designing experiments and regression. It is a lot of material that flows quickly. The final chapter introduces "a biased sample" of advanced statistical techniques.A bibliography--reasonably up-to-date when the book was published--points the reader on to further learning about statistics.

The book's title gives the fun part away. The authors use the panel-by-panel presentation style and humorous asides of cartoons as their primary mode of presentation. This works surprisingly well.It makes readers--particularly those intimidated by statistics--comfortable and ready to just read the panels. An instructionally useful side effect is the repeated use of graphical rather than textual definitions of statistical concepts. The tongue-in-cheek humor reinforces the relaxing experience of reading cartoons and eases the learning experience.

I have never required this book as a text for a statistics class. But I have listed it as an optional text and I have loaned it to a student or two.It is good therapy for those afraid of their first statistics class. And it's a fun read for those who have already passed this hurdle.

Product Description

Designed for a one-semester course, Applied Statistics for Business and Economics offers students in business and the social sciences an effective introduction to some of the most basic and powerful techniques available for understanding their world. Numerous interesting and important examples reflect real-life situations, stimulating students to think realistically in tackling these problems. Calculations can be performed using any standard spreadsheet package. To help with the examples, the author offers both actual and hypothetical databases on his website http://iwu.edu/~bleekley

The text explores ways to describe data and the relationships found in data. It covers basic probability tools, Bayes’ theorem, sampling, estimation, and confidence intervals. The text also discusses hypothesis testing for one and two samples, contingency tables, goodness-of-fit, analysis of variance, and population variances. In addition, the author develops the concepts behind the linear relationship between two numeric variables (simple regression) as well as the potentially nonlinear relationships among more than two variables (multiple regression). The final chapter introduces classical time-series analysis and how it applies to business and economics.

This text provides a practical understanding of the value of statistics in the real world. After reading the book, students will be able to summarize data in insightful ways using charts, graphs, and summary statistics as well as make inferences from samples, especially about relationships.

I am very dissapointed in the service of Amazon.I put in the name of the book and was guided to the 5th edition instead of the latest version(6th).There was no way to verify the edition on line at the time of purchase. This appears to me to be a scam by Amazon to divest themselves of the old inventory. When I found the error and did additional research to obtain the ISBN number I found the 6th edition.Since then, the search in Amazon has been updated and both editions appear.Still no reference to editions but surprizingly the 5th edition is priced higher.Another part of the scam to trick buyers to buy the 5th edition because logic thinking would put the newer/latest edition at a higher price then the older obsolete 5th edition. When Amazon management was presented with the issue; my error, no can help you.Guess what, for basicly shipping charges of the two books, Amazon has lost my future business and the bad PR to all I talk to in the future.Sure hope the balance sheet improved due to the shipping charges.

Product Description
A state-of-the-art introduction to the powerful mathematical and statistical tools used in the field of finance

The use of mathematical models and numerical techniques is a practice employed by a growing number of applied mathematicians working on applications in finance. Reflecting this development, Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB?-Based Introduction, Second Edition bridges the gap between financial theory and computational practice while showing readers how to utilize MATLAB?--the powerful numerical computing environment--for financial applications.

The author provides an essential foundation in finance and numerical analysis in addition to background material for students from both engineering and economics perspectives. A wide range of topics is covered, including standard numerical analysis methods, Monte Carlo methods to simulate systems affected by significant uncertainty, and optimization methods to find an optimal set of decisions.

Among this book's most outstanding features is the integration of MATLAB?, which helps students and practitioners solve relevant problems in finance, such as portfolio management and derivatives pricing. This tutorial is useful in connecting theory with practice in the application of classical numerical methods and advanced methods, while illustrating underlying algorithmic concepts in concrete terms.

Newly featured in the Second Edition:
* In-depth treatment of Monte Carlo methods with due attention paid to variance reduction strategies
* New appendix on AMPL in order to better illustrate the optimization models in Chapters 11 and 12
* New chapter on binomial and trinomial lattices
* Additional treatment of partial differential equations with two space dimensions
* Expanded treatment within the chapter on financial theory to provide a more thorough background for engineers not familiar with finance
* New coverage of advanced optimization methods and applications later in the text

Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB?-Based Introduction, Second Edition presents basic treatments and more specialized literature, and it also uses algebraic languages, such as AMPL, to connect the pencil-and-paper statement of an optimization model with its solution by a software library. Offering computational practice in both financial engineering and economics fields, this book equips practitioners with the necessary techniques to measure and manage risk. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Very easy to read, very concrete book. The Matlab code is very helpful; however, it is not the fastest code. This makes sense, because the idea is to make the code consistent with the text.

I will probably buy this book for future reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all around book and excellent reference
I am using this as a secondary reference for a half-semester Matlab and Optimization course and it has been invaluable. The writing is crystal clear, the examples and code are pretty close to perfect for every section. The author writes in a very intuitive fashion and of the sections I have covered I don't think I have been lost or confused once, which in this field is uncommon.

This is not really an introductory book for finance and if you read the preface, Brandimarte does explain that the book complements and does not replace more specific texts. I have been seen most of the material in this book covered in at least a cursory fashion in my Financial Engineering program and it makes a difference, so I would recommend that you are familiar with the material covered in Hull's "Options, Futures and Other Derivatives" or Neftci's "Principles of Financial Engineering" and Neftci's "Introduction to the Mathematics of Financial Derivatives" or similar texts.

You also won't be able to get away without having at least some intermediate level linear algebra. You don't have know it well but concept such as conditioning, LU and cholesky factorization should ring a bell. On the other hand some topics such as optimization I feel are covered very solidly. I am using "Optimization Methods in Finance" by Cornuejols and Tutuncu and although it is a great book I have to say that the examples in Brandimarte's book are much better and more intuitively explained, although clearly not in the same detail.

My only gripe with the book is that he tends to use code from the toolboxes, which can be inconvenient if you are student and only have the student version at home. Most of the time he builds the code from scratch but he uses toolbox code enough that it is annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
I own the first edition, which is half the size of this one.I enjoyed that book, but I had always hoped that it a provide a more in depth analysis. Well it appears my wishes have been answered.Paolo Brandimarte has expanded on his original outstanding work producing a rare book that can be used for self-study and which also provides practical exercises. It really is amazing how he has been able to touch on so many topics without sacrificing content in the process. The writing is lucid and the Matlab examples well-conceived.Anyone desiring to obtain a greater knowledge in the field of finance would be well-served in picking up this fine title. Of course, the book loses much of its impact if the reader does not have a copy of Matlab.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Readable
This book certainly is one of THE good books in Finance. I liked the way the author has provided the literature in Finance together with the math behind it. I have been reading other books on the same topic, most of which are crammed with equations without enough details and explanations. This book certainly attempts to fill that gap. (Ignore some of the typos though).

My request to the author...Please write another book, and this time, solely on mathematical Finance and please keep the same style (if not better) than you used in this book. The book (and the author) really helps to not only understand but also enjoy this field by reading books written in such styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for quants
This is a great book if you want to be a quant or are interested in using mathematical methods for finance purposes. There are not many good books in this field and this one is definitely one of the few good ones out there.

However, this book is not for people with little background in math. ... Read more

Product Description
Essential Statistics for Economics, Business and Management assumes no prior knowledge of statistics. It will also be highly relevant for the statistics component of courses in quantitative methods. The style of the book is similar to that of the highly successful Essential Mathematics for Economics and Business by Teresa Bradley and Paul Patton, with many worked examples integrated throughout.

  • Emphasis is placed on verbalising concepts, problems and results of statistical analysis. This will help students learn how to start a problem, complete the calculations, and report the results in a way that makes sense to a non-statistician.
  • Each concept is introduced with a brief but plausible explanation followed by Worked Examples. The Worked Examples will provide students with the necessary practice that they need in order to succeed at the subject.
  • Emphasis is also placed on ?learning through doing? problems. Excel is used to encourage students in doing problems and to enhance understanding (with links to datasets online). Minitab printouts are also included in the text.
  • Skills Development Exercises with brief solutions are included within the chapters, and Progress Exercises on theory and applications are provided at the end of each chapter. Solutions to all the worked examples and progress exercises are available as an appendix.
  • Web-based supplementary materials will be provided for lecturers adopting the text, including additonal exercises and solutions, excel datasets and exercises, powerpoint slides with key formula, figures and tables. Students can access an online glossary and weblinks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walks you through calculations
This really does a good job at being an introduction. It walks you through some of the calculations, highlights important formulas, and doesn't bog readers down in mathematical proofs. At times, I do wish it took a bit more time to explain the importance of various measurements, such as standard deviations, but overall it is very accessible.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a good text book.
The authors do a very good job for writing this book, especially for some students who don't really have mathematical background. It's very easy to understand what is the authors purpose. I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for MSF, MBA and Undergraduate Students
I used the first edition this book teaching financial econometrics at a university in Boston. The text is an excellent beginning book in statistics at the undergraduate and the MBA and MSF levels.

For my advanced students I covered the chapters on analysis of variance and chi-square tests, simple regression analysis and correlation coefficent, multiple regression analysis, other topics in applied regression analysis, nonparametric statistics and time series analysis including forecasting.

The statistical theories showed the mathematical derivations, often in appendices, yet included easy to follow numerical examples which students appreciated very much. The first edition was one of the first statistics books with particular attention paid to appllications using corporate finance, investment and banking data.

The only shortcomings dealt with typographical errors found in several places, and solution errors in the accompanying instructors' manual.

Overall, an excellent statistics book for the first-timer and a worthy addition to the library of a specialist, especially one with a financial perspective.

Product Description
This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to mathematical statistics principles underlying statistical analyses in the fields of economics, business, and econometrics. The selection of topics is designed to provide students with a substantial conceptual foundation from which to achieve a thorough and mature understanding of statistical applications within the fields. The examples and problems are intended to show the wide applicability of statistics in the fields, with the large majority having specific business and economic contexts. After introducing the concepts of probability, random variables, and probability density functions, the author develops the key concepts of mathematical statistics, notably: expectation, sampling, asymptotics, and the main families of distributions. The latter half of the book is then devoted to the theories of estimation and hypothesis testing with associated examples and problems that indicate their wide applicability in economics and business. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, terrible printing
I just got the book a few weeks ago, and read some chapters. I would say that it is a great textbook on mathematical statistics which best fit as a textbook for an advanced course in mathematical statistics.

Some notes:
1) The asymptotic statistic chapter is very thorough.
2) It is not too much oriented towards economics (which is fine with me).
3) When theorems are not explicitly proved, a specific reference is given.
4) Many examples are given for GLM.

The reason that I bought it was that I could not find it in the university library. In fact, I read somewhere that it is out of print. Unfortunately, the copy I got has very bad printing (I swear that it looks as if they scanned the original book) and after a day it has disconnected from the hard cover. VERY BAD PRODUCTION!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Prep for Econ PhD
I bought this book because I was worried about starting an Econ PhD program without any experience in mathematical statistics. I am so incredibly pleased with my purchase. The author clearly lays out the axiomatic theory of probability and then continues to mathematical statistics, using many examples drawn entirely from economics. It is so helpful to see the connection to the material where I will actually be using probability. I'm so glad that I bought this book instead of a more general approach to probability and statistics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
This is an excellent book on mathematical statistics.Although the treatment is less mathematical than if it were written for engineers or mathematicians, the gist of the topics is clearly written and the format is easy to follow. It covers all major topics needed for a firm understanding of mathematical statistics, and is a good background to econometric theory.I must admit that I did not know who the author was prior to reading this book, but he is one of the more decent writers out there who uses the right amount of mathematics to get the point across.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding textbook
One of the most beautifully written books in mathematical statistics with the right mix of rigor and simplicity. A must read book before jumping into econometrics.

It focuses specifically on the relationship between the type of problem, the type of data involved, and the appropriate technique. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to statistics
I found the book remarkably clear and instructive. It was the textbook for an MBA statistics course.Fortunately the book was much better than the teacher, so that by primarily ignoring the confused musings of the professor, and reading and working the exercises in the book, I was able to get an A in the class, and, more importantly, understand statistical principles and applications.I worked with the 6th edition.I now use the book as a reference for my work activities as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible
This book became my statistics bible. After never attending any statistics classes at the University, I was suddenly forced to work with multiple regressions at work. This book helped me understand all about statistics that I needed for my business purposes. The examples are very helpfull to understand what the tests actually do and how you can solve your own inference problems. I read the whole book in about 10 days (2 hours a day) at the beach and now work mainly with the overviews in the last chapters when I have a problem to solve at work.

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of ambiguity and errors
I had to use this edition as text book for my Statistics Course in an MBA Program and found multiple errors and ambiguities in describing basic concepts. Lack of rigurousity in presentation is pervasive. Although an engineer by formation, I found this book a terrible reading as an initiation in statistics!

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning don't go near the5th edition
The 5th edition of this book, available still in many places, is one awful book. The instructions for most of the Minitab examples are incomplete and in many cases worthless. Many explanations are superficial and the tie in to the overall statistical picture is weak. I have heard the 6th is better, the 5th should not have been printed.
