Product Description
The right kinds of tests, correctly applied, can help every teacher become a better teacher. But unless you know the nuts and bolts of effective test design and application, you may be collecting the wrong data; misinterpreting data; and drawing off-base conclusions about what students know and can do, what to teach next, and how effective your instruction has been.

In Test Better, Teach Better, assessment expert W. James Popham explores the links between assessment and instruction and provides a jargon-free look at classroom and large-scale test construction, interpretation, and application. Featuring sample items, testing tips, and recommended resources, this "crash course" in instructionally focused assessment includes

* The four types of instructional decisions that testing will illuminate.
* What you really need to know about measurement concepts like validity, reliability, and bias.
* The advantages and disadvantages of various test formats and experience-based rules for creating great items in each.
* The benefits of assessing student affect and guidelines for doing it in your own classroom.

In addition, Popham offers practical advice for dealing with today's myriad testing targets and explains how standards-based achievement tests currently don't (but could) provide both accountability evidence and useful instructional information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a teacher, and I loved it!
I just finished this book last week and I really enjoyed it.The anecdotes are sometimes laugh-out-loud funny and sometimes really make you think of the state of education in this country. The author isn't afraid to tackle controversial realities of the classroom and share how he handled various difficult situations.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who is considering becoming a teacher, wants to know more about the education system or just wants to enjoy a humorous and enlightening read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and inspiring book!
Mr. Goldman's book was an inspiring read.As a teacher myself, I was able to associate with his students and situations. If you are someone that is thinking of a career change, this book will certainly get you thinking about being a teacher!Mr. Goldman is a talented writer with a gift for story telling and seeing the silver lining in all things education!Way to go Mr. Goldman!

5-0 out of 5 stars A real teachers book
I work in a high school, and I thought that Goldmans book is highly realistic. You don't need to be a teacher to enjoy the many stories about what it's like to really work with high school students with disabilities. He also captures what it's like to teach in a middle age, and does it with a lot of humor. My favorite chapter is Chocolate Brownies.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent blend of humor and reality
Goldman's use of real-life examples, personal reflections, and a willingness to expose the self doubt that we all have makes Never Too Old to Teach a book that reaches across occupational boundaries. You don't have to be a teacher to enjoy his writing. I often found myself recalling similar incidents in my own school many years ago, and now I have a new take on some fine old memories. His conversational style and relaxed easy-going manner make this an easy and enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars never too old to teach
"Never too Old to Teach" gives an insight into the classrooms of America. I am currently working in the accounting field but was interested in other professions. I brought this book and could not put it down. The writing is clear, humorous and one does not have to be a teacher to enjoy. The stories of Mr. Goldman and his students provide the backbone of the book and are memorable and sometimes, laugh out loud funny. I would recommend this to any teacher and parent, ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ideas on how to improve your teaching
I was in the midst of doing classroom observations and puzzled by the lack of control the teachers had over their students when I decided to look for some books to guide me through my experience.I cannot express how glad I am that I happened upon this particular one.As I read through it, I observed the teachers doing things EXACTLY as Elizabeth Breaux describes in terms of "what works" and "what doesn't work" and found that the author was right on target in her theories.

This book was incredibly helpful to me as a future teacher with limited experience in the classroom, and I definitely plan to reread it several times as I begin my journey as a teacher.

Editorial Review

Product Description
A volume in Literacy, Language, and LearningSeries Editor Patricia Ruggiano Schmidt,Our goal in writing this book was to validate teachers for strong efforts in their life's work. We often observeteachers' frustrations with what they perceive to be a multitude of different "hot topics" in education that theymust attend to now, but which they expect to come and go, like the last "hot topics." So, we wanted to helpreaders see similarities between many of these "hot topics"-differentiation, multiple intelligences, culturallyresponsive teaching, "brain-friendly" strategies, authentic assessment, and ethical classroom management-which we feel are not "flashes in the pan." And we trust that serious practitioners will not oversimplify thefindings of neuroscientists and their application to education. Reading studies and books by scientists, a numberof which are user-friendly, can help ensure that teachers separate the hype from credible information. We have seen this professionally judiciousapproach in the work of graduate students (Kolinski, 2007) in adopting "brain-friendly" strategies. We have intentionally packed both theoretical/research-based and practical information in this book because professional educators want to know whythey should use certain approaches, models, and strategies. In turn, as professionals, we should be able to explain why we teach the way we do-not tojustify, but to educate others about our knowledge-based, reflective, decision-making processes and the impact on student learning. Thus, it is importantto read Chapter 1 because it lays a foundation. Each succeeding chapter (2-6) has unique and compelling twists and turns-chock full of ideas to use or to adapt. It is possible to gain lots of ideas, processes, and strategies from reading and implementing (or adapting) even one of the unit chapters, or a part of it. While some of the units are explicitlyabout literacy, others focus on content using reading, writing, speaking, and listening as critical in the learning process. Thus, literacy skills arereinforced and strengthened. Additionally, some of our colleagues and public school partners havegiven us feedback that they wanted to implement some of the units and activities themselves. So, feelfree to use this book for self-exploration and professional development. ... Read more
