Excellent book and great seller
Very happy to buy from this seller, the book (in good condition) arrived fast and very well packaged. It was a present for my dad and he really loved it.

A cloth-bound book, 93 pp, with 14 photo plates.

Capart, a Conservator of the Musees Royaux du Cinquantenaire in Brussels and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy wrote 6 articles written in the 1st 6 months of 1923; they are collected here. Includes a new Epilogue written for this edition.

In the Preface Capart modestly explains that the writings have "been most careful to guard against anything which might sem to fly in the face of Mr. Howard Carter's undoubted right to present himself the results of his discoveries." Still, this writer is proud to have been present to record very early impressions, including being an eye-witness to the opening of the tomb on February 18, 1923.

Delightfully entertaining!
This novel is the third of the Amelia Peabody series and in my opinion the most enjoyable of the three.
In this episode, Ramses, the couple's son, though still very young, has developed his own personality and plays an important role.

The plot is expectedly quite unrealistic but the author's expertise as Egyptologist allows her to introduce a slew of details that provide a lot of verisimilitude.

What is truly original and amusing are the dialogues and descriptions by Amelia Peabody, the novel being written in the first person.

It provides exceptional entertainment and is warmly recommended, particularly of course to those with a special interest in ancient Egypt or archaeology.

Christian-bashing galore
Barbara Mertz (Elizabeth Peters' real name) is certainly a good writer and her "Peabody" series is quite entertaining. Nevertheless, this--the third I read--is the least I have liked so far. Apart from Emerson's constant and hysterically disproportionate reactions, the "Reader" has to constantly deal with Peabody's eternal conceitedness and belittling of males (and the only intelligent females are only the ones who agree with Amelia, by the way) and their very young son's absurdly precociousness.The mentions of the couple "connubial bliss" and sexual relations increased in this book; I think if removed, the book might be reduced by 3 dozen pages. The book is also permeated with attacks to the Christian belief, which seems to give Mrs. Mertz intense pleasure.(Before vociferous non-Christians and atheists start attacking me, know that I don't even go to church.)For example Emerson says that Christians "walk into a man's house and order him to leave off worshiping his chosen god"...Yet, Muhamad's "conversion" techniques were to pick a city, surround it, give it a day to convert-or-die, then proceed to "convert" its inhabitants.Unlike modern Christians, modern Muslims still kill people because they do not embrace their faith--people who, as has been widely documented, they call infidels. Christians on the other hand, go around the world (and frequently find death) trying to peacefully convert people. While the Crusades and the Inquisition are past history, Islam continues to employ bloody methods of so-called conversion, yet always get a free pass. After many indignities thrown at Christians, the book ends with the most preposterous insinuation that the apostle Thomas would have written that Jesus had a son--something that is highly offensive to Christians. I am sure Mrs. Mertz would never dare to make offensive comments about Mohammed. She knows the answer would not be mere negative reviews, but she'd probably end up as housemate to Salman Rushdie thanks to some ayatollah's fatwa...(The day this review was published it already got 1 negative vote. Mrs. Mertz's fans are really zealous!)

Not the best but good entry

Summary: Amelia, her husband Emerson, and their son Ramses arrive in Egypt for another season of excavation and end up entwined in webs of murder, thievery, and religion.

Thoughts: I love the style in which this is written. I love Amelia as a character and her descriptions of everything. She is eminently sensible and yet romantic in her relationship with Emerson and she's very smart as one can see by her solving of mysteries.

I was annoyed by the fact that Ramses' speech was written phonetically so that "the" became "de", etc. I understand that he is young and precocious but that kind of thing always bothers me (whether it be French accent represented, Southern drawl, whatever, I hate it.) I was displeased with the attitude that Emerson displayed toward Christians as if they were the only people who ever killed in the name of religion, because um no they are not.

Overall: 4/5 I don't think this was an outstanding entry in the Amelia Peabody series but it will do.

Good book about ancient Egypt, rather sparse on Tut himself
This book begins with King Tut's death, explaining the burial customs and religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians, and then jumps ahead thousands of years to how his tomb was rediscovered.The text is interesting, and there are photographs and other illustrations that help bring the text to life.Children will learn plenty about mummies and Ancient Egypt.However, this book had very little about King Tut himself; we learn only that he was 18 when he died and had a wife.Nothing about how long he ruled, how he died, etc.Overall, it is a good book on ancient Egypt, just be aware that not much is taught about King Tut himself.

Tut's Mummy: Lost and Found
This is an excellent book for young readers to understand aspects and ancient Egypt and modern archaeology. It has good text and great pictures.

Good, but not as engaging as the author's other books
My 7-year-old read this (with a little help). I thought it was appropriate for the target age level. This book contains both photographs and illustrations, and we enjoyed the photographs more, because they gave a much-needed sense of reality to the story. We also appreciated that the book explained how to pronounce the hard words like Tutankhamen "(too-tonk-AH-men)". And as a parent it was nice to see it pointed out that Howard Carter's stubborn search for Tut's tomb paid off in the end.

Still, we did not find this book as interesting as other books by Judy Donnelly (such as "Moonwalk" and "The Titanic"). It could be a matter of our particular interests, but after being blown away by those other two books of hers, this one kind of fell flat.

If your child is already interested in the subject matter (Tut's tomb, mummies in general, and the beliefs of ancient Egyptians), then this may be a really good book to get. If not, then I don't think "Tut's Mummy" is going to awaken that interest.

This book is great perfect for 6-8 year old . It gave them a good idea of who king tut was , how his tomb was found, by whom and what it took entailed. It was really helpful for them to read before seeing the exhibit and they still enjoy it.

Timely subject

The chief source of our information concerning the doctrine of the resurrection and of the future life as held by the Egyptians is, of course, the great collection of religious texts generally known by the name of "Book of the Dead." The various recessions of these wonderful compositions cover a period of more than five thousand years, and they reflect faithfully not only the sublime beliefs, and the high ideals, and the noble aspirations of the educated Egyptians, but also the various superstitions and childish reverence for amulets, and magical rites, and charms, which they probably inherited from their pre-dynastic ancestors, and regarded as essentials for their salvation. It must be distinctly understood that many passages and allusions in the Book of the Dead still remain obscure, and that in some places any translator will be at a difficulty in attempting to render certain important words into any modern European language. But it is absurd to talk of almost the whole text of the Book of the Dead as being utterly corrupt, for royal personages, and priests, and scribes, to say nothing of the ordinary educated folk, would not have caused costly copies of a very lengthy work to be multiplied, and illustrated by artists possessing the highest skill, unless it had some meaning to them, and was necessary for the attainment by them of the life which is beyond the grave. The "finds" of recent years in Egypt have resulted in the recovery of valuable texts whereby numerous difficulties have been cleared away; and we must hope that the faults made in translating to-day may be corrected by the discoveries of to-morrow. Disgusting, yet educational
Perfect for the prepubscent boy :)The pictures are a bit morbid, but the text is eductional and the author is very respectful of the customs of ancient people.

I would recommend looking over this book first, with your specific child in mind, before just handing it over.

Grossness
What a handy little introduction into the world of ancient forensics! This little book is written toward the young adult crowd is all of 64 pages, but it certainly manages to pack all the facts, knowledge, and passionate intrigue into those for a well-rounded base cover of all the nasty details of old bodies.

It's easy to see that Wilcox is fascinated by all of this, and that feeling carries on to the readers. She puts in plenty of researched stories to discuss various aspects of the science, plenty of stories of which I have never even heard. Then comes all the fascinating nitty-gritty (considering) details of all that goes on in the studies.

It's not the easiest of reads due to the high amount of information, but neither is it the hardest, and the small size should be a comfort. Another great part is all the cool/pictures, and that is one of the reasons this book is so kid-friendly.

It's educational, fun, and shows lots of pictures of mummies and dead bodies. Great stuff.

Be Prepard to be Grossed out!!!!
Mummies, Bones, and Body Parts, by Charlotte Wilcox, is not a good book to read before lunch. I give this book 3and ½ stars because it was pretty good. It's about mummies and how they are found. It also tells how they were prepared for burial, and thousands of years later, where and why they were found or discovered.
This book is an informational text, that means it can teach you things. I like learning about mummies and how they are found. Also, I like learning new things all the time.

I don't think the author could have done anything better. I thought it was good just the way it is.

When reading this book you can tell the author wrote this book because she has a passion for Egyptian after life. Also I think she wanted other people to get excited about what she likes.
