Product Description
Learn how to comply with NEC® regulations in this instructive new book! One of the most important elements when designing a building's electrical subsystems is compliance with National Electrical Code® safety regulations. Yet, many university engineering curricula do not address this and other essential building codes. For this reason, H. Brooke Stauffer Director of Codes and Standards at the National Electrical Contractors Association, has written this informative introduction to clearly and accessibly steer beginning electrical engineers through the often confusing NEC® regulations. This quick guide will assist designers as they navigate the structure and organization of the NEC® and the way it relates to other codes and standards. Based upon the 2008 revisions to the NEC®, the Engineer's Guide to the National Electrical Code® is also an essential reference for established engineers looking for a refresher on the NEC® and its impact on building codes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superior Reference - Tailored to the P.E. -Worth Seeking Out
I used "Electrical Engineering Review Manual" by Yarbrough as a look upreference for the PE test. (ISBN = 0-932276-36-9). It was writtenspecifically for the P.E. and was the only book I actually opened at thetest. I would seek out this book despite being out-of-print.

I have alsoused it as a quick reference many times in my consulting career.

Somecontext: I never met a test I didn't like, graduated with BSEE fromRose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1982, and found the P.E. to besophomore-to-junior level with low-to-moderate difficulty and depth - withno significant time pressure - one hour average per problem.

You canmake the P.E. difficult if you only do one kind of problem. The PE is anengineering fundamentals test, which includes:

Power, Digital logic, Communications,Integration,Filters,Op amp applications,Controlsystems/application of feedback,NEC (my 1994 test had a groundingproblem)

I remember doing problems as follows: 1) A freshman-levelproblem relating power and energy (first page of the test and shockinglyrudimentary) 2) An integration problem - find the RMS value of a sine-wave10V peak-to-peak, chopped at 65% - another freshman level problem 3) An opamp problem - find the rise time, calculate the value of feedbackresistors, draw bode plot showing frequency response 4) A grounding problemusing NEC (I DIDN'T HAVE MY NEC! But did the problem anyway since I'd beendoing a lot of commercial design) 5) A Control Systems problem - classictransfer function with feedback problem 6) A Sallen and Key low-pass filterproblem.7) A power problem - transformer regulation withnon-purely-resistive load. 8) ?

A word of encouragement for prospectiveP.E.'s:Don't sweat that fact that you may not have prepared adequately -take it anyway. I delayed sitting for it because of this non-reason, andcost myself tens-of-thousands of dollars. Apply for it, don't tell anyoneyou're taking it, and go in with no pressure. Like Doritos tortilla chips"they'll make more" If you get a 69, you'll get to take the test again.

Itook the test with no preparation, walked out of the afternoon session(multiple choice) with one-and-one-half hours to spare, and got a 76(laughing when I got the notice). Real-world consulting and my classes atRose were and are far, far, more difficult.

Go get `em!! ... Read more

Product Description
This book was developed from material prepared for a course in instrumentation for final year mechanical engineering undergraduates. The approach used is to present instrumentation from the viewpoints of both electronics and signal analysis. The sensors and electronic circuits likely to be needed by a final year student project and for postgraduate research, are comprehensively covered. It forms a suitable degree-level text for students of engineering, science or medicine seeking a practical guide to instrumentation. It is also hoped that the book will be of use to practising engineers in general. The authors' aim throughout has been to write a book which guides the reader through the intricacies of specifying and selecting an instrumentation system, acquiring data without corrupting or distorting it in the process, and applying sensible signal analysis techniques. Examples and case studies are used to illustrate the techniques discussed, including many drawn from real-life instrumentation problems encountered by the authors in engineering, physics and medicine. The sequence of chapters follows the flow of data from the primary sensing element, through transduction, signal processing and digital conversion to digital signal analysis techniques. This logical sequence ensures that the design process is undertaken in the correct order, and provides continuity for the reader. ... Read more

This book is providing a summarry of must-known instrumentation.
Some basic priciples for each intrumentation are the plus sides.
It is good for quick review because of only 192 pages.
I would give 4 stars if the price is around $20.

Actually, I'm working with strain gages and operacional amplifiers for study impact waves in iron. I buy this book after build an amplifier unit and install strain gages and measure impact waves, and in past years I useand designed flow meters. This book is very superficial. An experimenterneed that somebody take information from electrical books, manufacturermanuals(strain gages), signal analysis books, fluid dynamics books, solidmechanics books, etc. and explain its use in instrumentation. Most peopleknow what a strain gage is...is not a mistery!. The real challenge is tomake the system work! and know that a strain gage is a electricalresistance don't help. Between this book and a real life aplication exist along road(start in this book and finish in the system working). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars FE prep using this textbook
I find this textbook is not helpful in terms of completness for preparing for the Electrical Fundamental Engineering in the afternoon section.

Don't rely on this text if you want to pass the FE for the Electrical Engineering.

This review is after one month of writing it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
The book is pretty good but I found an error early on in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review
This book is a good exam review of the FE/EIT. I used this book to get a review of what the test would look like. This book is designed for both parts of the general FE. So if you can get like 60% of the questions right. Your set at least for the first half of the test. After this book I managed to finish 15-20 minutes early after multiple reviews of the first half of the exam.I did not take the general second half. Make sure you study what's going to be on the test. The bio section is on the second half of the general exam, not the first half. Have a plan of attack, create a schedule and you should do well. It's lacking the electrical logic optimization (K maps).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best
This book features a lot of exercises, but unless you are extremely rusty or have little knowledge in general principles I wouldn't recommend this book. The exercises are incredibly basic, and the book is riddled with errors (I lost count after the second chapter). I'd recommend another book.

    2-0 out of 5 stars It's ok
If you are looking for a book that will help you on the afternoon electrical specific portion of the FE (or EIT) don't get this book.it helps alot with the morning session and gives alot of good ideas on being prepared and ready for the exam in general, but not alot on the afternoon portion ... In the last couple of decades the Boundary Element Method (BEM) has become a well-established technique that is widely used for solving various problems in electrical engineering and electromagnetics.Although there are many excellent research papers published in the relevant literature that describe various BEM applications in electrical engineering and electromagnetics, there has been a lack of suitable textbooks and monographs on the subject. This book presents BEM in a simple fashion in order to help the beginner to understand the very basic principles of the method. It initially derives BEM for the simplest potential problems and subsequently builds on these to formulate BEM for a wide range of applications in electromagnetics. The book aims to introduce both undergraduate and graduate students to the BEM fundamentals in a way that enables the reader to solve more complex problems on their own.In addition, it will serve as a useful text to enable professional engineers and research students to make full use of BEM in electrical engineering. ... This book aims to build the complex principles of electromagnetic field analysis upon concepts already familiar to beginners from circuit theory, and takes the unusual approach of emphasizing engineering applications (transmission lines, propagation, and waveguides) while downplaying static fields. Chapters follow the historical evolution of ideas in the field. Detailed figures and examples with step-by-step explanations illustrate the theories discussed while numerous drill exercises are added at the end of each section. 4-0 out of 5 stars Tries to do everything (except radiation)
True it has a couple of misprints , but the intended text is obvious, so it doesn't cause misunderstandings. The book explains all mathematical steps explicitly and tries to unify the electromagnetic concepts to build thorough understanding. It doestransmission lines & waveguides in depth and explains all derivations for which the results are just given in the standard textbooks. You'd want to have patience with the text because it's packed with mathematical derivations. However, it gives the reader a feel for the subject by explaining the reason for/meaning of curl, div , grads etc. and using analogies where applicable. The book in my view gives the reader more food than alot of other textbooks. The only bad thing about it is, it doesn't cover radiation . Perhaps we could have this in the next edition. The author should be commended on the amount of work that went into this. For improvement , add a decent chapter or two on radiation , perhaps more illustrations and this would be perhaps one of the most comprehensive texts on the subject. I still recommend this book to anyone serious on understanding electromagnetics.

"Deeply informed and insightful, Zachary has thoroughly captured thespirit of Bush and his times." -- Thomas P. Hughes, New York TimesBook Review

"This fascinating biography, superbly researched, well organized andengagingly written, will probably become the standard work on Bush andremain so for years to come." -- Roger Bridgman, The NewScientist

As a young professor at MIT in the 1920s, Vannevar Bush (1890-1974) didseminal work on analog computing and was a cofounder of Raytheon, whoseinitial success was based on long-lasting radio tubes. But he is bestknown for his role in Washington during World War II: as PresidentRoosevelt's advisor, he organized the Manhattan Project and oversaw thework of 6,000 civilian scientists designing new weapons. His 1945 report"Science--The Endless Frontier" spurred the creation of a system ofpublic support for university research that endures to this day.

Although he helped to give rise to the military-industrial complex, Bushwas a skeptical observer of the interplay between science and politics. He warned against the dangers of an arms race and led a failed effort tohalt testing of the hydrogen bomb. This balanced and gracefully writtenbiography brings to life an American original and his times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biography of great scientific leader and public servant
Zachary deserves great credit for writing a book that offers many virtues and lessons of lasting relevance. Because the author's commitment is worthy of his subject, this book should have timeless value. The roles for science and technology and how best to harness them for prosperity and for security to enable the preservation of peace are questions which transcend any particular time.

The subtitle, Engineer of the American Century, is justified.Bush contributed to American society in many ways.He was a fecund, tireless inventor, helping launch Raytheon Corporation. He was dedicated to boosting the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and thereby strengthening society through teaching and seeking practical knowledge. He was a pioneer and convenor of advances in computing.

Clear-mindedly appreciating the gathering evil of Nazi Germany, Bush decided to do something, as typical. He left MIT and got to Washington as head of the Carnegie Institution.Though a Republican, he persuaded President Franklin Roosevelt that those who were technically educated needed to be harnessed within a National Defense Research Committee, in service to their nation's needs.By helping harness the extraordinary abilities of civilian and academic technologists to serve their nation in meeting the challenges of World War II, Bush helped unleash a cornucopia of inventions and advances in thinking, with extraordinary economic legacies (computing, electronics, medicine, radar).

    A few words from Zachary:
--Bush's "was a life not of looking back, but of charging ahead."
--He had a "commitment to excellence and integrity that reinforced his belief in the power of one person to make a difference."
--"Bush shared Eisenhower's unease about the alliance between academia, the military, and industry"
--"The proliferation of nuclear weapons, the rise of environmental hazards, and the evident political partisanship of many scientists - all combined to engender a cynicism in the public about the aims and evidence of science."

Several other books of possible interest in relation to the contributions of technologists:
    Philip Taubman, Secret Empire (2003)
James Phinney Baxter, Scientists Against Time (1946)
    Biographies of Edwin Land
James Killian, Sputniks, Scientists, and Eisenhower (1977). Killian was a 1950s Bush, down to earth and his book is movingly endowed with wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vannevar Bush a key player in American military strength
More than one person has written on this page that Vannevar Bush is "little known", "forgotten", etc. I am only 54 years old, but I remember seeing Bush's name in print many, many times while growing up. He was always described as crucial to American military and technological supremacy since 1943 or so. A few of his accomplishments: He mobilized American science and engineering during WWII. His leadership was crucial to the Manhattan project. His differential analyzer led to MIT's Lincoln Labs playing an important role in the rise of information technology. He was Claude Shannon's teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vannevar like beaver
This is a very well written and entertaining book about a scientific administrator who played a major effort in organizing the technical responses required to anticipate and successfully meet the challenges ofWWII. His skillful analysis, technical comprehension and politicalastuteness not only provided outstanding leadership at the time but shapedthe intractions of goverment, industry and the academic community in such afashion as to remain intact to this time. One comes awawy with an enormousrespect for Dr. Bush. He must have been one tough character and difficultto deal with but he got the jobs done. It is a pity that his battles withAdmiral Ernest King have, to my knowledge, never been documented. Theissues they disagreed about were not trivial and their interactions musthave been awesome. I read this book shortly after completing Tycho's Islandand the similarity between the two men and the administrative issues theydealt with is both striking and illuminating.

Good men are hard to findand good books about them deserve our attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent biography of an important but little known man.
A very interesting and thorough biography of Vannevar Bush, who more than any other individual is responsible (for good or for ill) for the shape of today's scientific establishment.Well-written and engaging, with lots of interesting historical tidbits and good insight on the personalities involved.Excellent! ...
