This edition of the "Electronics Engineers' Handbook" is the most comprehensive, authoritative reference you will find in the shelves.

This book has all the information you will ever need on Electronic Engineering and related fields. Each topics was written by foremost authorities in their respective fields, limiting mathematical derivation in favor of useful bottom line expressions, stressing references hat are broadly informative rather than those that may be to arcane. The resulting work is intended to be practical rather than tutorial. Nevertheless, while applications and cost considerations are emphasized throughout, theory is included when is deemed to be helpful to comprehension.

This handbook will be useful to a wide range of readers, from undergraduate electrical and computer engineering students, to new graduates and experienced practitioners. Anyone who need quick access to a definition, mathematical expression, or like in my case, any working engineer who may need access to application information related to problems you may be experiencing, or to a new project you think you may be assigned to.

Definitively a must have for anyone related to the field of electronic, electrical or computer engineering. I am an Electronics Engineer, and I has been an industrial practitioner working for the last 16 years in the process industries. I have found this handbook to be really useful many times.

Be aware that this handbook has been updated and renamed in its fifth edition, and is now the "Standard Handbook of Electronic Engineering", which now includes a CD-ROM.

Mr. Christiansen gathered a group of fine authors for this title. This book covers almost every topic you want to know about electronics. The level is, of course, advanced. It works for graduate students, or forcollege teachers, like myself, who want to have a sort of vade mecum thatcan not be carried in one's pocket. I will call this book, a bible. Thismeans, a collection of books, with different specializations by differentspecialists. Mr Christiansen wrote some chapters himself. Say what you will, but even the EMC/EMI "guru type" person gets confused once in awhile on the complexities of electromagnetics. So that leaves us "little people" in need of a handy, precise and basic-to-advanced "explainer" to get us back on track. I'm fairly seasoned on EMC but I really like this book and carry it with me quite often on trips for handy reference. It certainly provides for the "big picture" while still adding significant depth. Especially for the beginner to intermediate this book is highly recommended. I have this suspicion the advanced persons don't have it far away either! Congratulations to the author. Perhaps he will follow up with an advanced version on select topics.

The author has succeeded in writing an easy to read book.I read through it in two days.But is it useful and worthy keeping?The author covers a lot of ground, even included a cursory introduction to special relativity and quantum electrodynamics which have no relevance to the rest of the book.It gives a relatively painless introduction to various concepts in electromagnetism.But the superficiality makes it a book for the popular audience rather than electrical engineers.The author does have the good sense to include a set of good references.So read the book once, and study the reference books.The book is not worthy keeping.I've sold mine.

I'd characterize this book as qualitative rather than quantitative.It provides good verbal descriptions for a wide variety of concepts related to electromagnetics.For me, it tied together a lot of lose ends.This book works pretty well for someone who has a moderate grasp of the electromagnetic fundamentals and wants to go to the next level of understanding without becoming mired in equations -- maybe a sort of heavy duty tutorial for students, recent graduates, and just-plain-curious technically oriented people.This is one of those must-read books, but I would not recommend it to someone without knowldge of college-level physics and differential calculus. ... This book is both lab manual and textbook, so if you do not have the exact measuring instruments the labs call for, you can skip lots of sections where the author really gets into setting the tests up.The primary value of this book for me were the clear explanations that came with the labs on how electronic components worked; but more importantly, how they related to one another and what they mean in a circuit.This book provides some valuable intuitive insights necessary to understand electronics, and I haven't seen this level and concentration of lucid discourse in any other electronics textbooks so far.This is a must-get book for anyone unfamiliar with electronics!

I would have given this book more stars but there are numerous typos in the equations which definitely challenges one to figure out what the author is talking about.For example, in chapter 3, page 41, the author attempts to show us how to add polynomials with the following example:

(3x(3) + 5x - 4) + (2x(4) + 7x(2) + 9) = 5x(3) + 7x(2) + 5x + 5.

(The single numbers in parentheses are exponents)

Now, 3x(3) cannot be added to 2x(4) with the result of 5x(3).Clearly the author means 2x(3) and not 2x(4), but I have not been able to find an errata sheet or list of corrections for the book online.If this was an isolated typo I wouldn't complain but I am only on chapter 3 and I have found at least 3 such errors in equations.For someone trying to learn the material it is disconcerting to say the least.Again,I do like the book as it speaks in normal language and is a good primer.Its just a shame it has so many non-trivial equation errors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short, gentle, "no frills" introduction to engineering math, focused on using mathematics, excludes proofs
Noting all four previous reviewers, in the years since their 2003/4 postings have only reviewed Fripp books, by way of full disclosure let me say I have no family, professional, or personal relationship with the authors. [Smile.]

This is a good refresher or review book for engineering math, targeting engineers rather than mathematicians. The book provides concepts, rules, and examples but no theorems or proofs.The authors clearly have an affection for mathematics and this comes through in the text. They speak to readers in an easy-going conversational, rather than theoretical, tone.

Upon completion readers should feel reasonably "at ease" with the use of key techniques in engineering mathematics, including trigonometry, calculus (differential, integral, and vector), differential equations, and probability and statistic. The text also discusses, very briefly: matrices, finite difference methods, concepts from operations research (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation, gradient descent optimization), finite element techniques, and chaos. Although the latter methods are discussed more for recognition than use.

The book has some minor issues. For example, occasionally less common mathematical representations are used, as when complex numbers are written as a+ib rather than the more common a+bi. The book starts at a level, i.e., basic arithmetic, that the majority of the target audience should probably already be comfortable with. Had this introductory section been dropped, the extra pages could have more appropriately been devoted to expanded coverage of any one or more additional topics from linear algebra, Laplace and Fourier transforms, or hyperbolic functions.

Because of its relatively smaller size and weight, compared to most engineering mathematics texts, the book is easier to hold and use. The smaller size also means the authors had to select those topics they felt most important and leave out many others, as a consequence the book contains less mathematics than found in a full-size text.However, by leaving out proofs, theorems, lemmas etc. there was room to include most of engineering mathematics' core concepts and techniques.

The book is printed on acid-free paper and so can serve as a reference for many years, without the paper degradation (browning) often found in other paperbacks. Overall, this is a solid introduction to the core mathematical skills necessary to solve basic engineering problems. Coverage stops short of topics normally found in advanced engineering mathematics, but the material presented here should allow readers to comfortably continue into advanced topics if desired.

This book strikes a nice balance - it is a useful reference book, while remaining interesting and entertaining.It takes a practical and innovative approach to addressing the usually stiff topic of math.I can't recall another math book I would characterize as "fun" - and you know how engineers could use more fun in our lives!!!It is an excellent refresher on math topics, and an enjoyable read.The included CD-ROM is a nice bonus.

If ever there was a math book that was entertaining, this is it!The authors manage to cram an amazing amount of mathematics into a book that is modest in size compared to the typical engineering math text, yet keep it easy to read. Each section starts with a clear exposition of the relevent concepts then the usefulness of the topic is illustrated with real life practical applications ranging from simple (falling cannon ball) to complex (fluid flow).The accompanying CD provides example problems for the reader to solve.

As an EE it is very easy to look up the math one forgets over time.

This is one of the more frequently used books on my refernece shelf. Although it does a good job of covering esential topics, it is dated in some areas (It was published in 1988; it's now 2005). For example, the chapter on batteries has no mention of nickel-metal-hydride batteries because the technology did not exist then. Chapters include: Technical Math Review; DC Circuit Analysis; AC Circuit Analysis; Selecting R L and C Components; Selecting Semiconductor Devices; Audio Amplifiers; Tuned Amplifiers; Feedback; Oscillators; Power Supplies; Battery Uses and Special Cells; Op-Amp Applications; Digital Logic; Computer-Aided Circuit Design; Analog-Digital Conversion; Video Amplifiers; Microprocessors; Transmission Lines; Filters; Antennas; Microwaves; Communication Systems; Measurements; Thick-film Technology; Fiber Optic Systems; 18 appendices and an index. A lot of the information is the fundamentals of each topic - imformation that is sometimes difficult to find now yet essential for complete understanding of the topic. The format of each chapter is similar, with an introduction or general background, the core elements of applicable theory, and detailed analysis or discussion. This could be a very useful book if it:

1. Had answers to at least selected problems (its usefulness as an independent text is rather curtailed by a junior engineer's ability to check his understanding)

2. More attention to actual engineering details (e.g. p31 bottom states,"There is little point to having a mathematical simulation that is accurate to 100 decimal places if the best display or plotting equipment is only accurate to +- 1%.")First, the rounding should be done at the END of the simulation not IN it if the limitation is in the display; second, 100 decimal places versus +- 1% is a careless confusion of units, not to mention the ambiguity of 1% in a display (to what scale or register length?).

I suppose it might be used as a text for an undergraduate or graduate course somewhere, but more likely it would be purchased by an engineer or scientist interested in modeling, and here the lack of answers is a real deficiency.

The demands of the book are small for a senior level electrical engineering course, and not severe for someone with a decent grounding in discrete and continuous mathematics including orthogonal transforms, linear algebra, calculus of several variables, and an introductory probability course.

There are several very good examples of models included, especially the TLM which makes the book worth the rather high price. I have a slightly earlier edition it is the first book I grab when I need to refresh my memory or answer that question that has my project team stumped. I bought the latest version for my summer intern - and he has been quite pleased with how much it has helped his 4th year electrical engineering studies. A good overall reference covering radio licensing to satellites, logic gates to protocols. Most thumbed reference book on my shelf.

I really like this book! I bought the 4th edition (1956) at a used book store and was anxious to get the latest version. I purchased it in 2001 when it came out, and have been very pleased with it.I would recommend this book to anyone involved in electronics.

I highly recommend Simpson's book.It provides clear, accurate information on all those things that we may have missed (or forgotten).His treatment of solid state devices is detailed, but accurate (too many other books gloss over the SS theory).
The only reason that I can't give it 5 stars is it's age.I would prefer an updated edition.If you have a copy, keep it.

As a second year undergraduate Biomedical Engineering student I used Simpson's text for my first Biomedical Instrumentation class at Duke University. At the time the professor told us that we would have a tough time with the book, but over time we would find that it was an outstanding reference and as our sophistication grew we would come to appraciate it more. That has certainly been the case!

As a professor now, teaching my own Biomedical Instrumentation class I still find this text to be the best on out there. It provides a thorough background on many of the key concepts of Electrical Engineering including AC and DC circuits, Fourier analysis, Semiconductor Physics, Transistors, Op Amps, Op Amp Ciucuits, Digital Logic, and even microprocessors. Some of this is admittedly dated, especially the digital sections, but the fundamentals are all there and I have not seen another book that covers so much, so clearly.

One of the great features of this text is its practical bent. There is a whole chapter on noise; describing phyical sources and some ways of dealing with probelms. There is also an excellent appendix describing various types of capacitors, inductors, and resistors. It answers great questions like: Should I use a ceramic capacitor in my design or an aluminum electrolytic?

Of the roughly 50 books on the shelf in my office, this is the one that is most commonly missing. I recommend this book as an excellent reference in an area where there are a lot of books available. ... Read more

This book provides a remarkably broad view of various AI approaches in practice and their targeted problems. All the math and examples are very short and incomplete but it's obvious that details is not the goal of this book. This book is particularly good to consult when one is trying to pick up the right technologies for her problem. Once she gets the big picture, she can follow the numerous futher readings in each field which are specified after each chapter to deepen the understanding and make the execution of the project concrete.

Actually, I'm working with strain gages and operacional amplifiers for study impact waves in iron. I buy this book after build an amplifier unit and install strain gages and measure impact waves, and in past years I useand designed flow meters. This book is very superficial. An experimenterneed that somebody take information from electrical books, manufacturermanuals(strain gages), signal analysis books, fluid dynamics books, solidmechanics books, etc. and explain its use in instrumentation. Most peopleknow what a strain gage is...is not a mistery!. The real challenge is tomake the system work! and know that a strain gage is a electricalresistance don't help.
