1-0 out of 5 stars The knowledge is in there somewhere?
I had a lot of trouble following the author's train of thought in this book.Chapter One on Analog vs. Digital is two pages long and chapter Two on Logic Gates is one page long. The definitions of terms are sparse simple sentences that leave the reader lost. The problems at the end of the chapters ask questions about terms and subjects which were never mentioned in the text. It is a good thing the answers were in the back of the book. The schematics and truth tables look like they were drawn with a black crayon. There is a lot of information in this "tomb."But, all in all, it is just a poorly written book.Digital electronics is a subject that requires some skill in conveying concepts that are hard to understand. I do hope that my efforts here will save another from making the mistake of buying this title.

4-0 out of 5 stars From Basic to Advanced
This book takes the reader completely through digital electronics from the simple circuits to the most advanced. If you have no prior knowledge of digital, though, you may get overwhelmed.I learned this material in school 8 years ago and I had several times I had to scratch my head and try to figure out what the auther was talking about.Basically, he assumes some prior knowledge electronics and boolian algebra and does not explain things well. The laws for boolian algebra are given one page with no examples of how they work.In my opinion, they should have had a chapter devoted to them.If you are looking for a good review book, this is a good one.If you are trying to learn the material from scratch, you may want to find another book (unless you have a tutor). ... Product Description
Electronics for Service Engineers is the first text designed specifically for the Level 2 NVQs in Electronics Servicing. It provides the underpinning knowledge required by brown goods and white goods students, reflecting the popularity of the EMTA white goods NVQs. It has also been written in the light of the new EEB / City & Guilds Level 2 progression award (RVQ) for brown goods and commercial electronics, dubbed 'son of 2240', and the existing 2240 part 1.

The wide ranging experience of the authors makes this a readable book with much relevance to the real-life challenges of the service engineer. From simple mathematics and circuit theory to transmission theory and aerials, from health and safety to logic gates and transducers, the complete range of knowledge required to service electronic and electrical equipment is here. This practical emphasis makes the book ideal for existing service engineers seeking to gain an NVQ.

Numerous questions and worked examples throughout the text allow readers to monitor their own progress, and provide practice for C&G tests.

Joe Cieszynski and Dave Fox have a wide mix of experience, both in the field and workshop working on TV and audio, and teaching electronic servicing and security installation at MANCAT. Joe writes regularly for Television magazine.

Matched to Level 2 NVQs, the new RVQ syllabus and C&G 2240 pt.1
Strong practical and professional treatment of subjectA book that is both suitable for white goods (washing machines, fridges etc) as well as brown goods (televisions, hi-fi, consumer electronics) and commercial goods.

Editorial Review

Product Description

This text deals with signal processing as an important aspect of electronic communications in its role of transmitting information, and the language of its expression. It develops the required mathematics in an interesting and informative way, leading to confidence on the part of the reader. The first part of the book focuses on continuous-time models, and contains chapters on signals and linear systems, and on system responses. Fourier methods, so vital in the study of information theory, are developed prior to a discussion of methods for the design of analogue filters. The second part of the book is directed towards discrete-time signals and systems. There is full development of the z- and discrete Fourier transforms to support the chapter on digital filter design. All preceding material in the book is drawn together in the final chapter on some important aspects of speech processing which provides an up-to-date example of the use of the theory. Topics considered include a speech production model, linear predictive filters, lattice filters and cepstral analysis, with application to recognition of non-nasal voiced speech and formant estimation. In addition to course requirement for undergraduates studying electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and branches of computer science involving such signal processing as speak synthesis, computer vision and robotics, this book should provide a valuable reference source for post-graduate research work in industry and academia. Prerequisite: Simply an elementary knowledge of algebra (e.g. partial fractions), and also calculus including differential equations. A knowledge of complex numbers and of the basic concept of a function of a complex variable is also needed.

Editorial Review

Product Description
For many 'non-electrical' engineering students electronics and electrical principles can be difficult to grasp. Also, most engineering students new to the subject need a clear introduction to the electronics which will help them master the key
concepts at the outset of their studies.

This book avoids any unnecessary mathematics and introduces potentially difficult topics through simple mechanical analogies, such as water flow. In this way, electronics is made accessible to students of all abilities, and across all engineering
disciplines. The clear, step-by-step approach of the text is reinforced by worked examples and problems (answers supplied).

'Electronics for Student Engineers' provides an introduction to electronics and electrical principles suited to a wide range of courses, including GNVQ Engineering (Intermediate and Advanced), BTEC National, HNC General Engineering, and BTEC/City and Guilds electrical and electronic craft and technician courses, including NVQs.
