Product Description
Pulmonary emphysema is a disease which develops because of a localized imbalance between endogenous proteinase inhibitors and proteinases leaking from neurophils during phagocytosis at inflammatory foci within the lung. This volume not only reviews at a biochemical level what is known about the natural inhibitors and proteinases involved in connective tissue destruction within the lung, but also suggests novel methodologies for reestablishing proper enzyme-inhibitor balance, including the use of natural or synthetic inhibitors for supplementation or gene therapy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Breathe Out
Good informative book. Easy to read and understand.I learned a lot about emphysema and good ideas on how to live with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Anyone Living With Chronic Lung Disease
I have been living with a combination of cardiac-pulmonary disease all of my life.My situation is unique but I found in this little book information that helped me to better understand my particular situation.I sat here reading this morning and found myself saying`Yes' that explains why that happens; and 'Yes' now I understand what my doctor meant when he talked to me about my accessory muscles and how these affect my breathing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who lives with any type ofchronic lung disease, or anyone who needs a tool to explain to family or friends about their lung disease. The explanations are clear and very easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars From ADVANCE for NURSES magazine
The author of BREATHE OUT is a nurse and a respiratory therapist with 35 years experience teaching patients with respiratory disease. She wrote this book as self-help and a supportive guide for this population.

She writes in a conversational style using easy to understand language and offers practical tips. She supports patients who smoke who might not feel they deserve help by saying that most patients in the hospital got there because of bad habits so read on anyway. She encourages people to be as independent as possible and gives them hope that life can be lived fully despite their disease.

The beginning of the book describes the anatomy and physiology of normal lungs in clear and simplistic terms and then defines abnormal conditions.

The pursed lip breathing technique, diaphragmatic breathing and increasing exercise tolerance are explained and emphasized as the best coping strategies. Tactics to prevent the complications of pneumonia, heart failure and COPD exacerbation are explored.

Information about medications is presented as a brief overview and divided into categories: breathing problems, secretion problems and heart failure. Equipment such as oxygen, airway agitators, inhalers and oxygen saturation monitors are addressed.

The book is a practical resource guide for patients with COPD.Nurses and respiratory therapists will also find this book a helpful resource for teaching patients.

Product Description
In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a thorough understanding on the clinician's part of the pathophysiologic basis of airflow limitation greatly enhances decisions regarding care. Differences in prognosis among the major types of COPD have become clear, and identification of airway inflammation has dramatically altered medical therapy. Dr Martinez, who coordinated this symposium, here explains the importance of judiciously applying findings from history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies (particularly pulmonary function testing), and radiographic studies to all aspects of disease management. The remaining four symposium articles address specific avenues for treatment of emphysema and chronic bronchitis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book on Emphysema I have been looking for!
For the natural treatment of emphysema this is the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I think this book was informative, helpful and written with the idea of helping COPD sufferes and their families. (Unline some other books that seem to have been written just for the money.) Mr. Green takes an honest and helpful approach to explaining why and how the condition effects the body and some very pratical ideas to help make living each day better. I would recommend this as great reading for anyone who has or knows someone who suffers from COPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Readable Look at the Naturapathic Approach to COPD
Not having a medical background, I was impressed with the clarity, readability and organization of the book's presentation, as well as how exhaustively the subject of COPD was treated.

The book began with a comprehensive explanation of the nature of the disease, proceeded to the myriad protocols for treatment of the disease and ended with a summary of final thoughts on the topic. The appendices and the glossary proved useful resources as well.

Overall, the book was a very professional work that added to the general scholarship of COPD and to my understanding of this very debilitating disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, Extensive, and Well Written
Well written with substantial and accurate scientific evidence...there is a demand for such information by those suffering from COPD, and their families. My hope is that medical caregivers become enlightened, as well, with this book.
