Product Description
Learning through doing is the foundation of this book, which allows readers to explore case studies as well as expository material. The book provides a practical guide to the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear equations, differential equations, optimization problems, and eigenvalue problems. It treats standard problems and introduces important variants such as sparse systems, differential-algebraic equations, constrained optimization, Monte Carlo simulations, and parametric studies. Stability and error analysis is emphasized, and the MATLAB® algorithms are grounded in sound principles of software design and in the understanding of machine arithmetic and memory management.

Nineteen case studies allow readers to become familiar with mathematical modeling and algorithm design, motivated by problems in physics, engineering, epidemiology, chemistry, and biology. A website provides solutions to the challenges that are offered throughout the book and also supplies relevant MATLAB codes, derivations, and supplementary notes and slides.

Audience: This book is intended as a primary text for courses in numerical analysis, scientific computing, and computational science for advanced undergraduate and early graduate students. Physicists, chemists, biologists, earth scientists, astronomers, and engineers whose work involves numerical computing also will find the book useful as a reference and tool for self-study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for structural and geotechnical engineers
I read this valuable book two decades ago and recently decided to revisit it.

In short chapters, it presents 32 case studies of structural and foundation failures involving buildings, parking garages, bridges, and a few other types of structures. What makes the book really shine is that the technical analyses are accompanied by legal analyses which illuminate the business and professional ramifications of these failures.

Though the book was published in 1982 (and is out of print), nearly all of the information and insight it provides will remain relevant for decades to come, and you can simply apply an inflation factor to adjust the noted costs.

I consider reading this book to be a mandatory component in the training of practicing structural and geotechnical engineers, so I strongly recommend trying to find a used copy. And of course a second edition would be most welcome! ... Read more

This text provides a thorough explanation of the underlying principles of spectral analysis and the full range of estimation techniques used in engineering. The applications of these techniques are demonstrated in numerous case studies, illustrating the approach required and the compromises to be made when solving real engineering problems. The principles outlined in these case studies are applicable over the full range of engineering disciplines and all the reader requires is an understanding of elementary calculus and basic statistics.

The realistic approach and comprehensive nature of this text will provide undergraduate engineers and physicists of all disciplines with an invaluable introduction to the subject and the detailed case studies will interest the experienced professional.

No more than a knowledge of elementary calculus, and basic statistics and probability is needed
Accessible to undergraduates at any stage of their courses

Product Description
Waiting for Macedonia gives insight into one of the most moving moments in post-war European history: the hope for a new Europe in the years following the collapse of communism. In this ethnography, Thiessen explores the different ways in which identity has been negotiated in Macedonia since the disintegration of Yugoslavia. In contrast to more familiar approaches to the Balkans--which emphasize tradition, rural life, and women in the contexts of kinship and marriage--Thiessen here investigates the everyday habits of a group of young professional women in Skopje. Using research data spanning eight years (1988-96), she traces key aspects of their life, including family relationships, television and shopping habits, cafe life, and attitudes to work. At the same time, she also raises larger questions about Macedonian, Balkan, and Eastern European notions of identity, suggesting that western discourses about former socialist countries may in turn be influencing the way young urban Macedonians see themselves. ... Product Description
This book offers a set of case studies exemplifying the broad range of statistical science used in evnironmental studies and application. The case studies can be used for graduate courses in environmental statistics, as a resource for courses in statistics using genuine examples to illustrate statistical methodology and theory, and for courses in environmental science. Not only are these studies valuable for teaching about an essential cross-disciplinary activity, but also they can be used to spur new research along directions exposed in these examples. The studies reported here resulted from a program of research carried on by the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) during the years 1992-1996. NISS was created in 1991 as an initiative of the national statistics organizations, with the mission to renew and focus efforts of statistical science on important cross-disciplinary problems. One of NISS' first projects was a cooperative research effort with !the U.S. EPA on problems of great interest to environmental science and regulation, surely one of today's most important cross-disciplinary activities. ... Product Description
The focus in this text is on mathematical modelling stimulated by contemporary industrial problems involving heat conduction and mass diffusion. These include continuous metal casting, laser drilling, spontaneous combustion of industrial waste, water filtration and crop irrigation. The industrial problems prove to be an excellent setting for the introduction and reinforcement of modelling skills, equation solving techniques, qualitative understanding of partial differential equations and their dynamical properties. Mathematical topics include setting up partial differential equations and boundary conditions, dimensional analysis, scaling, perturbation expansions, boundary valuer problems, Fourier series, symmetry reductions, Stefan problems and bifurcations. ...
