From the supplier: An analysis of the technological advancement and cultural history of Japan and the US establishes the basic differences in the patterns of industrialization in the two countries. Whereas the Japanese work together as a group, the Americans are more concerned with individual growth rather than organizational growth. Furthermore, the Americans still cling to the old conceptual frameworks such as Taylorism and scientific management when the Japanese rely on their cultural values for economic salvation. The US must learn to adapt to the challenges of the present times if it wants to maintain its stable economic status.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This essential text provides students with practical insight into the engineering code of ethics and how a practicing engineer is obligated to act in a responsible manner. To illustrate the complexities involved with acting in an ethical fashion, the authors have created characters that encounter a number of situations that test the engineering code of ethics. The dialogue between these characters highlights different perspectives of realistic situations that students will face as practicing engineers. As they proceed through the book, students see how the code can help in decision making, as well as the implications of various decisions. The philosophical theory that supports the ethical positions encountered is presented as boxed material following each section. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable novel with engaging side trips
An engaging short novel about an engineer, interspersed with side-bars on philosophy, history, and several well-known historical case studies.Like many other successful books on engineering ethics, co-authorship by an engineer and a philosopher/ethicist results in a thoughtful perspective on practical dilemmas that any engineer might encounter. By the time the reader has finished the book, essentially all of the categories of ethical conflicts encountered by engineers and addressed in professional engineering codes of ethics have been illustrated. This book (or just sections of it) would be a valuable supplement to almost any engineering design course. ... There is a growing understanding that to be competitive at an international level, Civil Engineers must build on their traditional strengths in technology and science with greater mastery of the business of Civil Engineering, the "softer" skills of management, teamwork, ethics, leadership, communication. These skills have been defined as essential to the successful practice of Civil Engineering by the ASCE Body of Knowledge Task Force and can be gained through formal education or experience. This book will be the first to take the practical skills defined by the ASCE BOK and provide illuminating techniques, quotes, case examples, problems and information to assist the reader in addressing the many challenges facing Civil Engineers in the real world. From the challenge of sustainability to the rigors of problem recognition and solving, the book provides an essential tool for working as a practicing Civil Engineer. ...
