5-0 out of 5 stars Object-Oriented Software Engineering: Practical Software Development Using UML and Java
The book meets in a timely fashion the requirements I had for my consulting business in software development. It covers at lenght the concepts of software engineering, reusable technology and requirements development in a easy to read fashion. The added values are the introduction of design patterns and design principles in the presentation of the design concepts. Finally, the addition of testing and management concepts wraps the overall concepts of software engineering in a complete and very satisfactory fashion. This reading is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I use this book to teach an undergraduate course in software development. This book covers both agile methods (which we use) and traditional methods, as well as object-oriented design. It is very clearly written and approachable. In fact, I have the students read it on their own over the course of the semester; their reaction at the end is usually, "I wish we had read it all before the beginning of the course."

One odd thing: different branches of the publisher can't seem to agree on whether the book is in print, which causes grief to (USA) college bookstores. I ended up telling my students to order the book off the web.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook for undergraduate SE course
This is an excellent introductory textbook for CS courses on software engineering. It features OO, UML, iterative processes, a good treatment of software frameworks and design patterns, constructive sample projects, and complete set of slides and full-length lecture RealOne video for free downloading. It is a thin book, but it contains more updated information than many classical ones. Most importantly, the authors have the confidence to air their opinions with justification, instead of compiling and citing a lot of inconsistent historical definitions or events.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE Book for Software Engineering
I used this textbook as an introduction to Software Engineering, and for the first time in my University career, I didn't find my textbook lacking or incomplete.
This book covers it all: the basics of Software Engineering, a review on Object-orientation, the software life cycle, detailed modelling in UML, architecture and design, patterns, and testing.
The material is easy-to-read, in-depth, well organized, and comprehensive. Too often, you find a book that bogs you down in its wordiness and jargon, but this isn't one of them.
This book was written by professors in the Software Engineering field who know, from years of experience, what a student needs to know in order to learn and understand the process of software engineering.
This is not a book that will sit on your shelf: I used it all the time during my first software course and still take it as my reference for all my other software courses.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a lot about software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Thermodynamics: A Computer Approach (SI Units Version)
The book is unusual in having a very large number of solved problems. Frankly, if I were to teach from the book, I'd like to see more opportunity for students to figure out how to solve real problems given only the theory. This is good for student's future skills and as feedback on how well I'm teaching. The book is easy to read and understand for someone without a strong background--easy for me to say and I hope true for real students. The solved problems should be helpful to someone who is without an instructor, having trouble, or no longer remembers how to solve a problem. Using SI units is a mixed blessing (in the US) at it minimizes turning problems into units conversion exercises but it provides no practice in this essential skill. ... Read more

Product Description
After completing this self-contained course on server-based Internet applications software, students who start with only the knowledge of how to write and debug a computer program will have learned how to build web-based applications on the scale of Amazon.com. Unlike the desktop applications that most students have already learned to build, server-based applications have multiple simultaneous users. This fact, coupled with the unreliability of networks, gives rise to the problems of concurrency and transactions, which students learn to manage by using the relational database system.

After working their way to the end of the book, students will have the skills to take vague and ambitious specifications and turn them into a system design that can be built and launched in a few months. They will be able to test prototypes with end-users and refine the application design. They will understand how to meet the challenge of extreme business requirements with automatic code generation and the use of open-source toolkits where appropriate. Students will understand HTTP, HTML, SQL, mobile browsers, VoiceXML, data modeling, page flow and interaction design, server-side scripting, and usability analysis.

The book, which originated as the text for an MIT course, is suitable for classroom use and will be a useful reference for software professionals developing multi-user Internet applications. It will also help managers evaluate such commercial software as Microsoft Sharepoint of Microsoft Content Management Server. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical advice for web applications design in the real world
This is a terrific book on what it takes to make web applications really work (both for users and for the businesses that create them). Managers of web design projects should read this book for its eminently practical advice on documentation, workflow, and pitfalls to avoid. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book teaching nontrivial material.
It's not easy to build a really good online community website. There are a lot of things to think about, and many of them have little or nothing to do with technical programming skills.

Buy this book, read it, step through it, and learn from some of the best teachers on the subject. And then when you've learned what they have to say here, take your new-found skills and build your own online community site.Using the methods in this book, your web sites can be more useful, successful, and profitable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Specific examples, great ideas
This book is helpful for programmers as well as people who work more generally with technology. I'm using very specific, technical information from the "Adding Mobile Users to Your Community" chapter for a web application I'm building, while using concepts from the chapter on discussion forums for a research project on how discussion tools are used at my university. If you build web applications, or work with people who do, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful textbook for web application makers.
If you're new to building web applications and want a balanced perspective on the engineering challenges involved -- from understanding user needs to data modelling to scaling gracefully --this book is a great place to start. It's mostly language-agnostic, so it'll be a good starting point for a few years but won't update you on the latest technology.Nevertheless, I know very few web developers who wouldn't learn something important from a careful reading of this book.

Where this book really shines is as a bridge from the world of college Computer Science to the world of actually building applications people use. This transition encompasses understanding your users, making flexibile designs, considering security, aesthetics, and a host of other issues one does not actually learn in a normal college CS curriculum. Thanks to its project focus, this book (and the course curriculum it implies) seeds an awareness of these many issues that can later be developed through experience.Other "software engineering" books over-emphasize theories, but this one will actually press you to get stuff built. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for engineering majors
This book has everything you would expect for engineering. A must have for Engineering majors. And it's cheep!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly fantastic reference.
I must admit here at the beginning that I am a bit of a snob when it comes to this type of book.I have reference books dating back a century for the sole reason that I do not trust nor like modern works. The current trend in reference is to provide only that information which will provide the reader with exactly what they want at that exact moment. This methodology requires that the reader return continually to the reference, wasting their time and energy.Older works provide a broader view of given topics and therefore tend to be held in my favor. This work may well be - in my opinion - the last of the great engineering references.

As stated by another reviewer, this work does an excellent job of covering most of the topics and information normally contained within a four-year mechanical engineering degree. This is not to say it is an apt replacement for a degree, just an excellent accessory to one.

Unlike the majority of generalized engineering references, this publication surpasses the norm of a mishmash of datasheets cribbed from manufacturers. The information contained is highly valuable, universally applicable and beautifully organized. That being said, it is true that the content is highly codified and would be of little value to those individuals who are unfamiliar with 'higher' level mathematics or engineering.

There are those in the engineering community who will find this reference lacking in specific topics - say, technical drafting, GD&T or materials science - but on the whole it is truly superb.

My only concern after having owned it for twenty-four hours is how I am going to reinforce the binding to keep the book from falling apart from too much use...

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference, even for the PE Exam
This little book is a good tool to add to your tool box.It has a fairly complete tabulation of formulas and even goes into some depth explaining them, but not too much. The only reason it got 4 vs 5 stars for therating was that the index is not cross referenced.I got the book as an aid for my first attempt at the PE Exam, and it earned its way on several questions- mechanics of materials especially.I strongly recommend this book to anyone in engineering who needs a pocket guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This book is just awesome!

First thing you notice when you open the box: it's tiny!
The book measures about 11.5x15.5 CM for a thickness of 3 CM.
This format makes it very easy to carry around!

It's packed with LOADS of info which cover so many fields! Plus it's printed on 1 side only, which gives you some space to add notes. The table at the beginning (literally at the beginning - on the cover!) makes finding the info you're looking for very easy: each section is designated by a letter. In each section the progression is the same: from the basics up to the most advanced.

Very very handy, a must have! I which I had it when I was studying engineering man !! There's basically almost everything you need in there! Looking through it I was amazed at all the stuff that was coming back to my memory!

The hardcover is good, it makes the book strong (and feel strong).

I think the best feature of this book is that it covers many subjects, with a broad range of complexity level. That means whether you're just looking for some basic information to refresh your memory or get up to date with something, or if you are looking for some serious formulas and calculation, it's in there!
I know that I will probably not use much of the advanced calculation presented, but I might come across a few, and this little book is gonna make the thing easy :)
It's an excellent way to refresh your memory!

A must have :)

You can learn a lot of mathematics in this book but nothing about MATLAB. There is no good practice in this book.
A hint for the author. Try to make a CD-ROM with all examples on it. So everyone can get familiar with MATLAB and the surface. Best would be to double or triple the number of examples. (good examples in MATLAB Code)

Product Description
We all live our daily lives surrounded by the products of technology that make what we do simpler, faster, and more efficient. These are benefits we often just take for granted. But at the same time, as these products disburden us of unwanted tasks that consumed much time and effort in earlier eras, many of them also leave us more disengaged from our natural and even human surroundings. It is the task of what Gene Moriarty calls focal engineering to create products that will achieve a balance between disburdenment and engagement: How much disburdenment will be appropriate while still permitting an engagement that enriches one's life, elevates the spirit, and calls forth a good life in a convivial society? One of his examples of a focally engineered structure is the Golden Gate Bridge, which draws people to it, enlivens and elevates the human spirit, and resonates with the world of its congenial setting. Humans, bridge, and world are in tune. These values of engagement, enlivenment, and resonance are key to the normative approach Moriarty brings to the profession of engineering, which traditionally has focused mainly on technical measures of evaluation such as efficiency, productivity, objectivity, and precision. These measures, while important, look at the engineered product in a local and limited sense. But from a broader perspective, what is locally benign may present serious moral problems, undermining social justice, environmental sustainability, and health and safety of affected parties. It is this broader perspective that is championed by focal engineering, the subject of Part III of the book, which Moriarty contrasts with modern engineering in Part I and pre-modern engineering in Part II. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars book review for "the engineering project: its nature, ethics and promise"
delivery was really really fast...
book condition was really goood as mentioned in item description...
price is also less...
i am fully satisfied with my purchase...

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting the ratio right
According to Moriarty, technology is promising. Those who thought that engineering is building stuff learn that actually it is "the practice of making good on the promise of technology" (1).Some technology disburdens but disengages. Some technology colonizes without contextualizing. The trick, "focal engineering" is to get the right proportion of each. But how?

Usually the subject of getting the proportions of values right is called ethics, a branch of philosophy.Philosophy is argumentative. What is right is what has the best arguments behind it.These days there is no true and complete picture of the way the world is (Putnam). One wonders whether Moriarty thinks he has a true and complete picture of what resonates with the lifeworld. For example, there is no question for him that the golden gate bridge simply resonates.(I for one had never thought about the bridge--so how can it resonate for me?).

Much goes unanswered in Moriarty.Moriarty is obviously concerned with the relationship between ethics and engineering. But, what is this relationship? He offers too many candidates. At one point it looks like he favors environmental sustainability, social justice, and safety as obvious and incontrovertible values in themselves.Kant, utilitarianism and the like are useful heuristic tools brought out to assist in applying the fundamental values. But, later, the book appeals to virtue ethics andHegelian ethics. Will Moriarty's real ethical position please stand up?

I am not very fond of creative definitions of terms.I think that philosophy should be above all clear. It should make arguments clear. There is no need to couch them within terminology and phraseology. It is difficult to see how the book coheres. For example, why does it talk about the history of engineering? What does the history of engineering have to do with focal engineering? What does ethics have to do with focal engineering? What is the lifeworld anyway?(as opposed to the deadworld?)

I recommend this book as a valiant attempt by a contemporary engineer to bring Borgmann, Hegel and others to bear on current professional ethics. It is an ambitious attempt, but unfortunately, I believe it falls short of being finished or even that functional as a textbook. It may violate its own promises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with essential data, illustrations, explanations
Just about everyone who considers a home built aircraft enters the domain with questions. While formal education isn't required, those who want to learn about designing will find this an excellent read for under 140 pages. This book will familiarize any inquisitive mind with facts about building propeller planes that fly under 250 mph.It does cover some faster flying planes for more experienced aviators. The illustrations cover the subject matter well at the average of one photo or drawing per page and will keep your interest high.My hats off to writer Dr. Daniel P. Raymer for his good technical writing talents.A lot more people would be attending college if books were written this way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable
This book is written by two acknowledged legends in aeronautical engineering and should be approached only by advanced aerodynamicists. Basic derivations for airfoils and wings given in other texts such as Anderson are rapidly skipped over. This allows the book to cover much more advanced material such as unsteady flow and supersonic drag in a relatively small number of pages. As a graduate student myself, I would be extremely afraid of taking the class this book arose from. Expect a pounding headache after reading this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for the Mathematical Minded

This is a great book that should benefit readers with a strong mathematical background at senior graduate or postgraduate level in aerospace engineering studies. Those outside this bracket may find the book a challenge to understand and follow as they can very easily be overwhelmed by the mathematics. The book has stood the test of time and is a must for specialists in aerodynamics or fluid mechanics who need a rigorous treatment of the subject.

All-in-all, a good book for those who can handle advanced mathematical manipulations particularly those carrying out studies at Masters or Doctoral level.

2-0 out of 5 stars Brutal
This book may be a good supplement to advanced fluids majors but there is no description of the mammoth equations used in this text.I bought this in 86 for my aero course and never used the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a mistake
This book is deceptively titled. It gives no inklng of the density of the math involved. It should properly be titled "A rigorous mathematical treatment of the Aerodynamics ..."I doubt I could have followed this back when I was immersed in physics and engineering courses in college.I certainly bounced right off of it 15 years later. This book should not even be available outside of University Bookstores' Engineering sections. There is simply no point in anyone else buying it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Effective
This book is easy to get through and explains the equations that you need well. I'm using it for a class right now, but it is a great intro book for environmental engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
The book was very good, looked like new, even though it said there were marks, there seemed like there wasn't any.It came at a reasonably good time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just as promised, thanks
the book arrived when and how they said it would in the condition they promised. Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who don't focus on environment, but need to learn about it
Generic and simple. I took a required class in basic environmental engineering and was pretty happy with this book. It's simple to use and does not assume and prior knowledge of environmental engineering besides common sense. Everything is explained well and without indulging into the never ending and unnecessary details as a lot of text books do. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author wasn't trying to push an agenda (something I thought came standard with any book dealing with the environment). All of the information was objective and discussed from a neutral "know what it is, and what it does, and why" perspective. The chapter about global warming actually almost seemed to downplay the artificial and hyped up urgency and extent of the issue by focusing on only on the numbers and nothing else. Not math intensive at all except maybe a few rates of growth/decay. Solid intro course book. However if you're not interested in the subject to begin with, this book won't change that.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for class
Very useful book.My teacher used it a lot and the examples are really helpful. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This was REALLY late
This was REALLY LATE. I ordered it on a Friday, and it took 32 days from then until I got it. NOT good. It was a textbook for a class, so I had to make do without a textbook for half of the class. The book itself is fine, it just took forever to get here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful if an expert
As a student this book is at times hard to understand and follow. It gives general explanations and then suddenly throws hard practice equations at you some of the times. However, if you have learned this topic already and is looking for a reference book, this would be a good choice as it has the necessary information to refresh you on the topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This book is well written, a little big for the content it has, I think it could have been shrunken by a few pages. It covers a great amount of information and it includes several pieces of software that aid in simulating your circuits! I think that's quite good. The only downside I find is the price, deamn. If you can get this book for cheaper do it, its not a bad book, I have definitely bought worse. The only reason im deducting a star is because of the price, other than that, the book is great, very intuitive and easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, kinda expensive though
Its a great book for the classroom. The book does well to explain most concepts and it comes with NI-Multisim.For those of you who never used or heard of multisim, its a circuitry simulator that allows circuits to be built virtually and be simulated and analyzed. The only draw back is the price-tag.Decently hefty, but it is a 1200 page book with an never-ending student version licence of multisim

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me pass the PE!
Great introductory text for a non-IE. Very broad, covers most of the range of the IE topic. I used it as a study aid when studying for the PE exam; I passed, and I credit much of that to this book.

Good: Covers lots of stuff that was on the exam, including:
-Industrial processes (metal cutting, Taylor tool life eqn)
-Facility layout
-Facility location (traveling salesman, milk run algorithms)
-Operations planning (forecasting demand, EOQ, exponential forecasting)
-Project management (PERT, crashing, forward/backward pass)
-Good introduction to stats and probs in the appendix

Not-so-good:
-Lots of wasted space on management theory (get a business text instead)
-Computer stuff is out-of-date

It does not go into substantial detail, so it is (as titled) an introductory text. Still, I highly recommend it to the non-IE.

3-0 out of 5 stars This not an update of the 4th edition
This 5th edition is not exactly for the same users of the 4th edition. While it clearly reads in the publisher note on the back cover that the scope of this book includes aerospace engineering, it DOES NOT ANYMORE. This 5th edition has unfairly deleted the Aeronautics and Astronautics chapters. Furthermore is has reduced tremendously the Automatic Control chapters into one useless basic control chapter.

I do not understand the new editor's view of this strategy, but I am glad I still have my 4th edition copy. I will surely return the 5th edition copy because it is useless for aerospace engineers compared to the 4th edition oneEshbach's Handbook of Engineering Fundamentals, 4th Edition. ... Read more
