Not suitable as an introduction. Even for an introduction it's too simple. It contains about 100 pages but could havebeen printed on 50 pages. Layout is unprofessional and images do not add information. Some images are in very bad quality too.

This book is full of typographical errors spelling errors, grammatical errors, and omissions (for example, the book states:see formula for the three parameter Weibull distribution and then jumps to discussion of the formula without telling you what it is).The graphics are also poor.Fortunately, the cost is low.I would recommend any new reader have another Reliability text to which to refer when reading this one in order to determine whether equations are correct or not (for example, on page 47 the book states that R(t)= e to the lambda (t) when in fact R(t) = e to the minus lambda (t).And the word "lambda" is misspelled as "lamda".). ... I am a plant metallurgist for a company and I constantly use this book to look at properties for various materials.The book is relatively small (unlike ASM books) and contains loads of hard to find information.

Smith's book is excellent for two reasons:

1) His explainations of the properties, structure and applicaiton of various alloys is simple and to the point.(Many of them are somewhat out of date, but so is every other textbook in the world.)Excellent for metallurgists.

2) This book is so loaded with tables, you may never have to look any mechanical property data up in the library again.Excellent for mechanical engineers.

Although expensive, this book will replace a dozen others on your desk.

So I was having a lot of problems with my Electrical Circuits class, and desperately needed help... I saw this book, said it contained all the basics, easy to understand, blah blah blah...

Unfortunately it was just like my textbook... so it didn't have a positive nor negative effect on me... it acts like sparknotes... simply putall of the equations in a smaller book...

So if you're trying to have something condensed, get it... if you're trying to understand, seek help at the school because there are no books currently available to guide you step by step

The idea was to have the essentials of AC/DC circuit analysis, linear circuits, electronic circuits, digital logic circuit design, electromechanical machines, and control theory in one handy outline. The problem is, any one of these subjects is way too complex and deep as it is presented in most universities for the book to be helpful for undergraduate electrical engineering students. Also, on the whole, this material is far from basic. The material on electromechanical machines and control theory is usually taught in junior or senior undergraduate courses.Thus, this book would be most helpful to a professional or someone returning to graduate school for a master's degree in electrical engineering who needs some review on material that they have previously mastered but possibly forgotten. Unfortunately, as the other reviewer pointed out, this book is chock full of errors, thus rendering the book pretty much useless in the problem solving department. If a revised second edition of this book ever comes out with corrections to all of the current errors, I would recommend it to the target audience I have already mentioned, but definitely not to undergraduate engineers who are seeing this material for the first time.

I'm presently using this as a textbook in an into-level EE class. The book is a great concept - give a book of problems and enough information on the theory to solve them, including some step-by-step examples. And, sometimes, it works well. What kills it are the repeated glaring errors in the answers it gives for the questions - so far, I'd venture to say that, after the first couple chapters, more then 10% of the answers are wrong, be it from swapping a sign someplace or an outright mistake in understanding on the part of the person who solved the problem. This makes the book uterly and totally unacceptable - it has as much potential to damage someone's knowledge of electronics as to teach the person. ... Read more

Overall this text is excellent, however it isn't getting an excellent rating for one reason. The case study is so boring you stop reading the chapters at about analysis phase (huge chapter where you are likely to fall asleep and not remember the first page even). This is possibly one of the worst texts I have ever used. Many of the example problems contain typos or diagrams that do not match the given problem. Numbers are often pulled out of thin air without explanation. Many of the "answers" in the back of the text are incorrect. Some chapter problems cover material not covered in the chapters. Additionally, the solutions provided by the publisher are often incorrect. This textbook needs a significant overhaul before it can be considered appropriate for use in undergraduate or graduate programs!!

This book is full of practical applications of value engineering, including a number of case studies.I found the book very valuable in preparing me for the Value Methodology Practionier (VMP) test that is a part of becoming certified through S.A.V.E. (Society for the Advancement of Value Engineer). Their are other requirements to becoming certified by S.A.V.E. but this book covered a lot of the practical applications necessary.The book also goes through the detailed steps in the value enginnering methodology which is very helpful in understanding how it can be used in everyday applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Step-By-Step Calculations for the Mundane
This is a necessary text for all engineers. Such textbooks are highly useful in establishing standards for mundane calculations performed in many branches of engineering. I just recently replaced my first edition of this book with the newest so that I would have access to the new enviromental engineer calculations added.

The book is now divided into civil, mechanical, architectural, and chemical engineering. If you can't find what you need, the safest bet is to check out the mechanical section next. In my opinion, the mechanical section is far too large and it is time to abandon the division of this book by degrees. I would divide it up by task; this would require simplifying the table of contents and an expansion of the index but then who really uses a TOC with a handbook?

Why do I use the word mundane? You won't find complicated calculation procedures here, nor will you find a lot of selection criteria information. What I mean is a table ranking technology. A good example of this is the series of books by Coulson and Richardson on chemical engineering. In that series, under drying, for example, all the technology is ranked according to product dryness, particle sizes, etc.. None of this is presented here. What makes this book useful is that is presents a procedure understandable to junior engineers and clients for solving a particular problem such as calculating a slab thickness or the size of a ventilation duct.

This book is a must-have if you are a consultant, contractor, or just want an understanding of a basic engineering calculation.

An essential reference and work tool for any engineer, student or technician, this handbook contains more than 5000 calculation procedures that will show, anybody and anyone working with engineering applications, quick and easy calculations formulas and procedures to solve most engineering problems encountered in the industries and in class.

Using a "cookbook" format, this book presents detailed "recipes" that describe the problem to be solved; step-by-step procedures to be followed; a worked out example of the typical problem; and (in most cases) presents cross-referenced related calculations.

Truly a most have. I am an Electronics Engineer, but I work as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Process Industries. As a result I have been involved with Chemical and Mechanical Engineering issues in a day to day basic. This handy reference has proven most useful and time saving when in need of an specific formula, or shortcut.

I respectfully submit, that you need to appreciate Mr. Hicks' position.He has provided a conservative approach that will work in almost every situation.The empirical approach that you advocate may well work in most situations but I'll bet there is little margin built in forcontingencies.True, your solution may cost less, which is important.Butwill the low-margin, low cost solution still work 1 or 2 years from now orwill the pipe size be too small to allow for degradation/changes?Customerrepeat business must be a consideration, too.

I'm not trying to beconfrontational, and I understand what you're saying.But you have toappreciate the position that Mr. Hicks must take in such a handbook, and hetakes the only logical one, which is to be on the conservative side. People doing more than a couple of these calculations in a year in factshould consult more in-depth material, as you did.

Mr. Hicks has done a wonderful job in compling equations, however, he has missed the practical applications in compressed air and vacuum systems.I initially used his theoritcal position on calculating pressure drop in pipe for compressed air.His position seems reasonable and logical until you compare the results with practical applications.Ingresoll-Rand, the air compressor manufacturer, published tables of pressure drop verses pipe sizes, delivery pressures and ACFM.Futher ASPE has published a data book which leads the engineer into an empirical equation for calculating pressure loss in compressed air piping.The results with both Ingresoll-Rand and ASPE agree.Using Mr. Hicks' therotical approach drives the pipe size much larger than needed and therefore the cost of the project.My suggestion is that Mr. Hicks contact I-R and ASPE to incorporate their empirical approach to sizing pipe for compressed air and vacuum systems. ... Andy Sage is the gold standard for SE.
As a fellow of INCOSE he clearly knows SE.

His classes are always informative and up to date.
He is currently working on the cutting edge of Systems Architecture.We can only hope that his notes, which are locked behind GMUs firewall and webct,will be turned into a book.

He edited the Handbook of SE as well as editing the incose journal.If he says it, you can take it to the bank.

Unfortunately this book is 6 years old now and Armstrong is not in Sage's league, but Andy can turn anyone's drafts into good material. So while good, the weakness is that this book does not reflect the changing view and emphasis of SE.

This is not to fault Professor Sage, but merely reflects the fact that even incose cannot agree on what SE is, and that the govt which drives most of SE efforts keeps changing their emphasis.incose even keeps rewriting their handbook as the internal power struggles bring to power different groups with different views of what SE is.

The dirty truth is that there are NO good SE books.There are a lot of books on SE that have some good stuff in them but none does the job right and/or is up to date enough.

Should you read this book.Probably yes.Along with several others, and then extract your own summary of what is pertinent as most of them have way too much filler and wander off into detailed areas of interest only to the authors.

There are a lot of handbooks and reference materials on the web, mostly from govt sites.Some has some excellent content, many are grossly out of date or totally spurious.Especially the OF material from professors at universities who have not kept up to date and still promulgate their 40 year old ideas.Put all together there is a lot fo good info on SE somewhere out there.We can only hope that someone of Sage's ability will finally put it all together.Dr. Sage is probably getting too old to address this and also his current efforts on systems Architecture.Jim Long has promised a good intro book and he is one person that could pull it off well.But he seems to always have a higher priority alligator nipping at him.

If the IEEE were to get serious about systems as the keystone to making software work right then they might be able to sponsor a good reference book.That will likely be some years in the future.

I own this book. While it does contain some valuable information on the Value Methodology process, it not to be considered more than a companion to the author's course on Value Enigeering. Thus, I have not found it to be a good nor readable resource.

Much of the text (326 pages) is devoted to overhead presentation type information, i.e., heading and bulletized list likely originating from the author's own presentations developed to teach his class. Have you ever received an overhead presentation without the author's notes? It is very difficult to understand the points being made. Many pages contain examples of forms that a VE team leader might want to use. They amount to little more than a page full of empty boxes. In the latter portion of the book, many pages contain very little information and lots of empty wordless space. This is a great reference, with wonderful physical insight into plasma kinetics mechanisms. Unfortunately the astonishing work of the authors is undermined by minor typos from the editor, which may throw off beginners- equations where charges or species don't add up, and the like. I could not find an errata yet, therefore only the 4 stars; but sincere congrats to the authors for such indepth and insightful work.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with other two reviews posted above. Every now and again I do refer to the book, but it's certainly not my favourite. I actually checked to see if there's a new edition out because I thought it would contain a lot of corrections. It does cover many topics, that's why I find it useful, but tread carefully.

we used this book for undergrad se classes i taught.
unfortunately there are not a lot of alternatives.
(we *also* used buede for another class and mandel for project management etc).

the authors know their stuff, unfortunately some of it got lost in translation. perhaps because a lot of the material got translated from govt publications.

this is more like a handbook than a textbook.for the handbook user just get sage's tome.for a textbook -- well this is least worst for an intro to SE.for supporting areas other books are better.

what is good is excellent.but what is bad is frustrating.
they tried to cover way too much in one book and got confused with SE and OR and management techniques and quality and a whole bunch of other stuff that is really tangential to SE.

and the materialgets covered at uneven levels of detail so it is not a good handbook nor a good textbook just a good pile of notes on a lot of se related stuff.

previous editions had many errors and did not come with any answers to the problems, many of which were confusing as stated.

the first part of the book really introduces SE.The rest of the book is for review by someone who has specialised in the areas they cover.

The book would be much better if they concentrated on SE and left the other stuff to other books.i have not checked with the publisher for current availability,but previously there was no instructors guide and no answers to the questions.that is a big drawback for classroom use.

this would be best for an experienced person who wanted to review SE or get an introduction to a specialised topic relating to SE.

the dsmc/dau se handbook is (was?) free on the internet from various govt sites and does a great job of introducing SE.you should look at that resource before buying this book.indeed, unless you are using it in a class you might just want to borrow this from a library instead of buying it.

Very much the 30,000 foot view of systems engineering. I picked this book up because I saw it referred to all over the place, and assumed that it was reasonably definitive. Sadly, it is not. What the book does do is give the reader a reasonably good high-level overview of systems engineering in general, and of some of the techniques involved in estimating the "ilities" of a given system design. However, the level of detail on any one subject area is very light, and the bias of the book is very much toward DoD-style systems engineering. A good book for systems engineering managers. System designers should also seek out Wymore's "Model-Based Systems Engineering" for a thorough understanding of requirements and design.

I took a course in school that used this book and I really enjoyed the book and what it taught me about systems engineering.The authors do a great job of walking the student through the systems engineering process, and ginving a general overview of the steps.The later chapters expand upon this overview to give the detail needed to actually carry out the process.The last part of the book expands upon the "-ilities" of systems engineering which are the authors partiucalr areas of interest.I think anyone interested in systems engineering should get this book, its a great resource.A few things I didn't like was the constant referencing of graphs and figures from previous chapters, it really inhibits my learing when I have to keep flipping back and forth to follow a train of thought.There are also a few chunks of the book that are very, very hard to follow the logical train of thought and require meticulious attention to the detail, and often require rereading.I'm hoping the authors with put out an updated and expanded edition soon, that compensates for these shortfalls. ...
