This is an good guide for engineers who have never worked as a consultant. It covers many technical, professional and operational issues. However, it needs practical information on buiness issues like financial and accountingfor both "lone guns" with just one person vs two or morepeople.

Questions like "Do I need to have a registered companyname?" "If it is just me do I need to set up a bankaccount/accounting system or just have the client make out the checks to me?". "What do I need to do if I set up for Individual vs aCoorporation or Partnership" "Do I need to set up a payrollsystem which takes out taxes and worker comp, or do I just deposit thechecks in my personal account and handle taxes at end of the year?"

Chris Rowen, CEO of Tensilica, has an exceptionally broad history of successful experience in VLSI chip design, verification, software, systems design, multiprocessor applications, and EDA tools.This book draws on the integration of those experiences to build an exciting new approach to designing high-performance, low-cost, low-power chips and concurrently, well-tuned software.

Investors and managers should read Chapters 1,2,3 which analyze the trends and issues in System-on-Chip design, and motivate the use of a new approach that combines extensible processors with powerful software to create software and hardware in parallel, faster, and with less engineering effort. They should also read Chapter 8, which makes insightful prognostications about a future in which many chips will have hundreds of CPUs, or more.

If those Chapters describe What's Happening, and Why We Must Change, Chapters 4-7 explore How to Do It, and should be read by both hardware and software engineers who build embedded systems.The real-world examples (from Tensilica) and advice offer strong support that this approach actually works.

Although it certainly promotes the Tensilica viewpoint, it is well-motivated, well-referenced to the last 20 years of computing research, and has good comparisons with other approaches, i.e., it is not just a commerical sales-pitch.The book is clearly written (modulo a few typos), and can be used by readers of varying depth of experience and knowledge.

Computers have improved drastically in the last two decades, but we humans have not improved in speed or memory, and we are limited in the number of things we can really grasp at once.Real computing breakthroughs happen when people invent cost-effective ways to raise the level of abstraction, so that our brains can ignore low-level details and focus on larger issues.

Increasing CPU performance enabled people to shift some work from assembly code, to higher-level languages like FORTRAN or C, to early scripting languages [like UNIX's shell and awk], and then to even higher-level languages like TCL, Perl, PHP, Python, etc.These have enabled large numbers of people to build their own Web-based applications. It is simply unimaginable that we'd have all those applications if people had nothing but assembler and C.

I think this book describes a similar kind of breakthrough, which drastically raises the level of abstraction in concurrent hardware/software design, to take advantage of the huge nubmers of transistors now available at low cost.This doesn't mean that other design approaches will disappear (just as C hasn't gone away), but I do believe the approach described here will find increasingly wide usage, and it will certainly change the landscape.Chris is an old colleage from MIPS and SGI, and I always appreciated his insights, and this book integrates them into a very useful whole. ... The Addison-Wesley Software Security Series is generally a great collection, with titles like Software Security: Building Security In (my rating: 5 stars), Rootkits: Subverting the Windows Kernel (my rating: 4 stars), and Exploiting Software: How to Break Code (my rating: 4 stars).I particularly liked the first of those three (SS:BSI), which I reviewed last year.I felt Gary McGraw wrote "a powerful book with deep truths for secure development."Software Security Engineering (SSE), by a collection of authors, pales in comparison to SS:BSI.You can skip SSE and stick with SS:BSI.

I started reading SSE very closely, underlining key concepts and looking for important ideas.About halfway through the book I realized it was mainly a collection of ideas from other sources.Very rarely do I read books that successfully present a dozen approaches to the same problem.What usually happens (as is the case with SSE) is the reader is left reading overlapping material and fragmented points of view.Frequently I found myself wondering "so what am I supposed to do with this?Where do I start?What approach matters?"

It is especially problematic when a book contains articles essentially republished from magazines.Each article author needs to frame the problem to make sense for the short period during which he has the attention of the reader.That works for a stand-alone article, but it doesn't work when all of these previously stand-alone articles are collected in one book.I can accept a book published as a series of independent works, with an editor overseeing the affair.I can't accept a book published as a single work, with magazine articles inserted at various intervals.It's incoherent and confusing.

Still, I found a few ideas interesting.Page 79 (a reprint of a 2004 IEEE article) says "Security is an emergent property of a system, not a feature. This is similar to how 'being dry' is an emergent property of being inside a tent in the rain. The tent keeps people dry only if the poles are stabilized, vertical, able to support the weight of wet fabric, and so on. Likewise, the tent must have waterproof fabric that has no holes and is large enough to protect all the people who want to stay dry. Lastly, all the people who want to be dry must remain under the tent the entire time it is raining. Whereas it is important to have poles and fabric, it is not enough to say, 'The tent has poles and fabric, thus it keeps you dry!'"

Page 73 (a reprint of a 2006 Build Security In article) says "When security requirements are considered at all during the system life cycle, they tend to be general lists of security features such as password protection, firewalls, virus detection tools, and the like. These are, in fact, not security requirements at all but rather implementation mechanisms that are intended to satisfy unstated requirements, such as authenticated access."

Page 59 (another reprint of a 2006 BSI article) says "Software can be designed and developed to be extremely secure, but if it is deployed and operated in an insecure fashion many vulnerabilities can be introduced. For example, a piece of software could provide strong encryption and proper authentication before allowing access to encrypted data, but if an attacker can obtain valid authentication credentials he/she can subvert the software's security. Nothing is 100 percent secure, and the environment must be secured and monitored to thwart attacks."

Pages 39-40 say "In software systems that include acquired or reused (commercial, government off-the-shelf, open-source, shareware, freeware, or legacy) binary components, application defense techniques and tools may be the only cost-effective countermeasures to mitigate vulnerabilities in those components."

Page 35 says "Maliciousness... makes the requirements of software security somewhat different from the requirements of safety and reliability.Failures in a reliability or safety context are expected to be random and unpredictable.Failures in a security context, by contrast, result from human effort (direct, or through malicious code)."

If you want to read a good overall book on software security, read McGraw's SS:BSI. ... Read more

Anyone can write software, but it takes an engineer to make it robust and well designed... this book teaches just that!

It starts off with a thorough introduction to Requirements Engineering. It walks you through the process of communicating with the customer, eliciting, analyzing, validating, modeling, and managing requirements. There is even an entire chapter on writing the requirements documents. The appendix includes a sample requirements specification.

This book of problems is meant to accompany the "Chemical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 6th ed." by the same author.The nice thing about this product is that it is reasonably well supported by the website [...], which publishes errata for any mistakes that may have crept in.

Now I will caution you - this book serves the purpose of reaquainting you with concepts that you may have forgotten, but does not fully get you ready for the questions posed on a PE exam.Approximately one month before you take the PE exam, be sure to look at the NCEES sample test, available from the NCEES website.The NCEES publication gives you a better feel for what you will be up against.That said, this book was still extremely helpful in many of the key topics and has, for the most part, well-explained solutions.

Good 'catch all' book.An exhastive coverage of all aspects of ChE.The problems are very selective and challenging.They are a little cumbersome to work thru, but well worth it;The problems seem designed to help w/ applying ChE principles versus simple 'plug-in-the-number' problem solving.It has helped me with understanding when and how to make realistic assumptions, making a long problem much shorter.The problems also seem to be more challenging then the actual sample exams.It makes taking the sample PE exams a breeze.

Highly recommended also is the Lindeburg, ChE reference manual for PE exam.

Dont expect it to read like a novel ....will require many readings and thinking before the light bulb goes off ... but beware.. a lot of the concepts cannot be easily applied in an organization that is not open to structured thinking that takes time and effort..

This text provides an excellent reference text in the hands of a seasoned systems engineer. The generation of system functional flow diagrams and cost performance trade analysis is covered in detail. However, I found no correlation with set theory in chapter 4 with systems engineering design process. In my review of the text, I have found most components of the engineering process identified and covered in various amounts of detail. This text does not stand on it's own with respect to covering all aspects of the engineering design process. But then, neither do other texts I have reviewed.

This book addresses systems engineering tools and methods needed for building complex systems.Our systems have gotten much more complex, more inter-coupled than they were decades ago --think of the recent (Summer '03) East Coast power failure. Systems Engineering tools, techniques, and education must progress to address the new complexity. This book attempts to cover a lot of ground in one not-too-huge volume. The Authors seem to base a lot of examples based on their experiences at organizations including the EPA.

It is tough to find another comparable reference book that covers so many topics with examples in a single volume. This book may also be useful to multi-disciplanary non-environmental engineers.

I bought this book to take to the Civil Engineering PE Exam. I flipped to the index to find that the topic to solve one of the wastewater problems was in there, so I quickly went to find the page it was on. Well I couldn't find it and after minutes of wasted time, I finally figured it out.....the book was missing over 50 pages of information. The pages went from 665 to 720 in an instant. Nothing was wrong with the binding; the book was just missing pages. Don't buy this book for the PE. It has examples of problems that are more complex than the exam and it might be missing pages.

This is a good book that provides a simple reference for civil engineering students. You probably need to have some previous knowledge in deformable mechanics to have a comprehensive understanding of the material.This would not be a problem except that many schools (mine in particular) require a CE materials course before taking junior level deformable bodies.Students should not be deterred by this and will have no problem understanding the bulk of the material, as long as the professors using this text are aware of this.

This book provides a solid foundation for the practicing engineer involved with the econmic evaluation of engineering projects, an area which determines for the greater part, whether projects should be progressed or aborted. The principles are well defined and the examples are easy to follow, rightfully stimulating thinking and not substituting for it, since as we are well aware, engineering projects may vary in size, scope and complexity. I would recommend this book to any engineering student or practicing engineer. Consulting the work of other authors (eg Sullivan) would supplement understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. I gave the book a 4 star rating because of the errors within the examples provided. The principles however, are conveyed so effectively in the text that identification of these errors become easy.

I needed this book for my college intro to engineering class. With the prevalence of the internet today, I thought a book like this would be obsolete. How wrong I was. This edition was published in 2004, so some of the information is dated. But a wide range of information is at your fingertips; from engineering history, detailed descriptions of various disciplines, and interviews with engineers of all levels. This book is good not only for an engineer; it even has instruction on how to succeed in school and in the job world beyond. Instead of selling at the end of the quarter, I'll be keeping this one on my shelf.

In our class we used it only for Matlab, I am not using any part of the Excel so I can not comment about that, but if you are wanting to learn Matlab quickly, and bluntly about how to program using matrix plots then I would recommend this book. It only goes into image processing at the end but it also has loops (if, while, and for). The homework at the end is pretty straight forward for each chapter making you think a little but nothing like Electromagnetics.

I used this for a beginning mechanical engineering class. It is written by a professor at my school. The book was adequate, although my school had the brilliance to upgrade all the computers to Excel 2007 and not get a different book. It is not very useful with 2007, but was fine with Open Office Calc for everything but curve fits and was great with Excel 2000-2003. It's generally a pretty good way to learn how to use excel better if you're familiar with the basics. (Although it leaves out a few things-it never covers 3-D plots, which Excel is capable of) ... The title and description promised much, and my shelf of often-used computing books is dominated by Addison-Wesley, so I gave this a shot. Unfortunately, the book seems to be devoid of any real substance. I approached this book as a practitioner trying to build a DSL for production use, and wasn't able to find much beyond a regurgitation of one can get from the blogosphere. If this is your very first foray into DSLs it might be useful, otherwise you'll find Terrence Parr's "Language Implementation Patterns" to be a substantive and rewarding read, unlike this book. Also, Fowler's been threatening to publish his DSL book any day now.

The author's reinvent terms that are already known for decades in computer science. Instead of building on top of existing knowledge she tries to create her own concepts but fails. This book is absolutely worthless. I can't believe my university suckered me into buying this crap.
Chapter 1 is all about "living on your own."
They cover things like: doing your own laundry, eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and practicing good study habits.
Chapter 2 is all about "What is an Engineer?"
The "problems" at the end of chapter 2 that your instructor may or may not have you complete include meaningless tasks like writing three separate one-page reports and an engineer's experiences in college or writing a biography of a famous engineer. Hell, question 2.13 says "Write a one-page report describing the Einstein/Szilard refrigerator and how it was created."
WHY????
I HAVE ACTUAL WORK TO DO.
I DON'T WANT TO SIT HERE WRITING BS ABOUT "BRAIN FOODS" I CAN EAT TO IMPROVE MY ALREADY ADEQUATE STUDY HABITS.
