2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money and buy a better dictionary
Because eventually you will have to.This dictionary is very basic and contains a very limited vocabulary. It is done so thoughtlessly that you have to flip through the Arabic pages in reverse since they are printed as if Arabic was written from left to right.Small oversight, but still annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good dictionary
I selected this Arabic dictionary because it surpass the others with the number of word and cheap price . Also, it is two-way dictionary.

2-0 out of 5 stars not very useful
i tossed this thing after a year. might be good for people studying arabic just for university. a tiny little dictionary like this could never cover E-A and A-E both very well, so whats the use? a bigger dictionary, like the mawrid, is necessary to make real progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arabic Practical Dictionary: Arabic-Englist English-Arabic (Hippocrene)
I find this dictionary very practical. The pronunciation is helpful (ie: romanized for Arabic). I teach English to Arabic speakers and they enjoy using the dictionary also as it gives the words which are common in speaking several dialects. It is small enough to carry in a purse or book bag. Any English speaker with a basic understanding of the Arabic alphabet and sounds, can use it to interpret either the spoken or the written Arabic.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful to have and very portable
This dictionary has some things going for it that make it worth having. The vocabulary it offers is very contemporary, the Arabic is printed in a nice-looking font, and quality English-Arabic dictionaries of any size are hard to find.So I made a lot of use it for classes where written compositions were assigned. And it isn't too heavy to carry around and won't take up a lot of room in a briefcase or book bag.My one criticism would be that the Arabic-English half is organized by alphabetical order, not by roots as most Arabic dictionaries are.Best suggestion:get this along with Hans Wehr (Arabic-English only) and get going right away learning to look up words by roots. It's a slow and painstaking learning process, but it's a very necessary skill in learning Arabic, so it's really better not to put it off.Use the Arabic-English half of Awde only if you're in a hurry to finish an assignment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Larousse Concise French-English dictionary
Great dictionary, especially for use in the high school French classroom. There are even boxes for French cultural notes that aren't always explained by a simple translation.Well organized and very up to date.If you're looking for a student Larousse dictionary, this is the one to get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Larousse Concise - the best student dictionary
The Larousse Concise French-English/English-French Dictionary remains the best choice for high school and college French students because of the number of the selections and the nuances that can be teased out of the definitions by cross-referencing terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent - and also available in other formats
i just wanted to add a quick note for those who may not know, but this electronic edition of the oxford spanish dictionary is also available as an app for the Android and iPhone platforms.in android, just search for it in the marketplace. i assume iphone would be similar with the store.(you can also read more about it here online by googling for "oxford spanish dictionary android/iphone" (no quotes).)

i don't know about iphone, but there is a fully working 7 day trial version you can get instead, for the android platform, to evaluate it.you only need internet access to install it -- but not to use it, as the entire dictionary will be stored locally on your device.it also occasionally has updates, which is nice.

when you install, just don't make the mistake of getting one of the smaller versions (like the "pocket", "concise", "desk", etc).if you want this full version, it is the most expensive of the editions, and costs upward of around $25 or $30 US (at least as of this writing).

the android version is excellent -- and fun!i really love the portability besides the same "quick look-up" that the CD features.the interface is amazingly simple, fast, and user-friendly.i use it all day long with a quick punch in of a few of the first letters of the word, and i'm there! sweet.i read books this way, and having it on my little device (instead of computer) makes it easier to curl up in bed with a good spanish novel.. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've ever used ...
... and from where I sit I can see at least five, with more lurking around the house. Other reviews have covered in-depth why this dictionary is the best, but I had to add my dos centavos. Everything I've tried looking up in it has been there, including words / phrases omitted by the other dictionaries. It also includes a tremendously helpful reference section on proper correspondence (both English and Spanish). Examples are given for travel plans, personal letters, business letters, email format and addressing envelopes.

I also appreciated that the dictionary is very clear as to the proper term to use in any given context. (I won't even go into my using the word "reloj" instead of "mira" when I wanted to say "Watch the sunset..." It never would have happened if I'd had this dictionary at the time.) Sample sentences are a great help. The blue entry words are a nice touch - not strictly necessary, but helpful in finding the main word for long involved definitions.

The only thing that I might consider a negative point is the size - and that's only if you're looking for a travel dictionary. It's 3 inches thick and very heavy. If it's a stay-at-home / school / work book, the size is reassuring - you know anything you need will be in there, and it feels good and substantial like a dictionary should.

Overall, I love this dictionary and highly recommend it. Sometimes if I'm bored, I'll even flip through and read it for fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Spanish Dictionary Review
This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). A staple of any Spanish student's library, a good dictionary is invaluable for studying and translating.Known around the world as one of the most reputable brands of dictionaries, the Oxford Spanish Dictionary doesn't disappoint. This sturdy hard back version is long wearing and will withstand the inevitable years of repeated use by students of all levels.

Including entries for over a whopping 325,000 words, and an even more staggering 500,000 translations this dictionary is a fully comprehensive reference tool. The largest edition yet, this version has grown to include many idiomatic, slang and regional expressions, phrases and uses to make it a thoroughly modern dictionary for use with native speakers.Covering all 24 regional dialects of Spanish, the dictionary is also valid for use in any Spanish speaking country.

The dual color format is easy to read, with the word printed in blue and the accompanying definitions printed in black. This allows you to easily scan a page to find the word that you need.Grammar notes are enclosed in boxed areas, clearly separating this supplemental material from the core definitions. These boxes contain all kinds of useful information to help you get a more complete picture of key entries and how they are used by Spanish speakers than simple definitions and translations can provide.

The large amount of examples of usage, make this Spanish dictionary a market leader. These help you to decide on the best word choice for a specific context. In both Spanish and English one word can have several meanings, for example bark, kid or post. The examples of usage clearly illustrate the best choice for each situation in both languages and contribute to your overall vocabulary and grasp of the Spanish language.

Each entry also lists the correct pronunciation, giving you the peace of mind that you can properly say the word, although you may have to take some time to familiarize yourself with the phonetic symbology used.

Although it's size may stop it from being portable (at least comfortably) The Oxford Spanish Dictionary is an ideal desktop reference book for all Spanish students, and you can rest assured that where some more compact dictionaries stop this volume keeps going to provide the definition and translation of even the most unusual words.

In closing my review of this product, I'd like to share with you the three Amazon products that I have found most helpful in my pursuit to learn Spanish. If you are truly serious about achieving fluency, I'd recommend getting all 3 of them if you can afford it.

1.Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This isactually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasant to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.

2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs. Especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs and who is looking for a new way to make learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an easy and fun activity

3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitionsentirely in Spanish. I use this one mainly because it was highly-recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches Spanish. According to him, this is the "standard" among university level Spanish professors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Usage and Coverage
I have found the Oxford Spanish Dictionary to be an excellent reference.I also have other spanish-english dictionaries as well as the "Diccionario Esencial de la Lengua Española" which I used extensively before buying the Oxford.I now find that I do not need the others. The coverage is better than the Diccionario Esencial and the examples in the Oxford are excellent.

I particularly appreciate how it does not even attempt to provide an English equivalent for many Spanish termd but rather provides extensive examples, with translation, for how they may be used.I have been recently been reading 19 century short stories in Spanish and this dictionary has been a godsend for find many of the more obscure or colloquial terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Singer's point of view
Excellent dictionary, the spoken pronunciation gets around the problem of two IPA transcriptions for Castillian and Mexican dialects.Though it means more work transcribing from the spoken text. The enunciation of the pronunciation is easy to follow.User friendly. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for beginners
This is geared toward native Vietnamese speakers learning English, but if you are a native English speaker learning Vietnamese, like me, it is just as helpful. A good companion to a standard dictionary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Detailed with descriptions
The new edition of this book OPD is much too detailed and with a low ESL student it is entirely over her level. This book which was first published in 1998 is much better and I would give that book a 5 star rating.
Example:A student does not need to know the 10 varieties of shoes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful tool for ESL
My program used the 1st edition of this text and found it quite useful for our adult-students, it is quite helpful for my Vietnamese students, who have no knowledge of the English language. Students compare the quoc ngu to the English but sometimes found it difficult to pronounce the words. Other than that, it contains a wide range of subject matters that are relevant to daily life.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it!!!
I'm very pleased with the new edition. First of all, not only up to date with vocab, the quality of the papers are good. Second, it has a whole lot more commonly used vocabulary nowaday relating to everyday life, school, computer, astronomy etc... Good buy indeed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much
I like the 1998 edition which is clear and straight forward as a dictionary. The new edition has too much stuff going on each page. I teach Beginning Low level ESL and it is overwhelming for the students. They see the words, sentences, conversations, stories on one page. It is too much. From the old edition, I can introduce the vocabulary to the students and add the related materials accordingly. I will keep usingthe 1998 edition dictionary. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cassell's Latin English dictionary paperback
I gave this as a gift to two friends. The book was in excellent condition.Although I prefer the hardbound version, the paperback was fine as was the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin Dictionary
This book is a must for Latin classes. Thank you for the fast shipping. Highly recommend.

2-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
It has a good amount of entries, but they do not include all four principle parts with the latin words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Verbum!
The Cassell's Latin-English Dictionary has a long history. First published in 1854, it has continued in publication under various editors and revisions to the present text, the work of D.P. Simpson, Head of the Classics Department at Eton during the middle of the twentieth century. This book remains for all but the most advanced scholars in Latin the principle Latin dictionary. Clerics, students and general readers of the classics use this volume more than any other. There are other editions (concise editions, etc.), but this is primary volume for standard use.

The dictionary has two sections, a Latin-English side, and an English-Latin side. The Latin-English side contains a primary vocabulary of classical Latin, most words used and found in writings between 200 BCE and 100 AD/CE. There are also proper nouns (names, places). Spelling was flexible in the ancient world; the spelling here follows the conventional modern spellings, with cross-references for significant variances. Words indicate definitions, declension or conjugation as appropriate, and some pronunciation guides. Latin authors are also indicated (in abbreviation) for almost every word.

The English-Latin side is primarily useful for prose composition into Latin of the classical type. Because of the natural growth of language due to progress of technology and ideas, many English words will not be found, as there are no Latin equivalents. Latin equivalent words are taken largely from Cicero, Caesar and Livy, with some additions from legal and ecclesiastical Latin.

There are additional sections for standard Latin abbreviations, the Roman calendar, bibliographies for word lists, atlases, general antiquities, and Latin language guides. This is the best choice for a Latin dictionary for almost any purpose. Even high-end scholars will want the Cassell's for ready and easy reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still my favorite

After all these years, I still love this one. I look at it all the time. Aside from the Latin-English and English-Latin dictionaries, it has information about usage -- conjugations, declensions, what each tense is used for, examples of conjugating in every verb and declining in every noun form (including the more obscure, such as dependent and deponent verbs), etc.

It's in here. It's far more than a dictionary. If it isn't here, that means you need a straight-out usage or text book; this little dictionary goes far and above an average little dictionary. I've been using the same copy since high school and it's still next to my desk all the time. I don't even have a career related to Latin; I just love it. I love it for my own writing (in English), and simply my own edification. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cassel'sLATIN-ENGLISH DICTIONARY
This was a used hardback book.I found the condition to be as good as new, the price was excellent, I use this book at work. I am extremely happy with the overall transaction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
Cassell's Latin Dictionary is an extremely useful tool. It really helps when you're looking up a Latin word for an English translation or vice versa. The only set-back is that it isn't very clear as to where each definition would be used.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent dictionary
This is a decent dictionary, but not for absolute beginers. It has no grammar and some missing words that are pretty common, still they should be there. Overall it's a good dictionary, considering that it has also an english-latin part.

3-0 out of 5 stars English-Latin, macrons lacking
I already owned an Elementary Latin Dictionary when I bought this, and I bought it because I was about to take a course in Latin Prose Composition, so I figured the English-Latin section would be useful. I then discovered that their English-Latin is a fraction of the size of the Latin-English, and for being so small, it's very impractical. I would often have to think up several synonyms for the word I was looking for before I could find a usable entry, and was surprised to find many obscure English words (salubriousness, ophthalmia, higgledy-piggledy--not kidding) that most English-speakers would never think to look up.

As for the Latin-English portion, it seems to be a pretty good reference, with reasonably detailed explanations of each entry. My issue was that my Prose Comp. teacher was requiring us to use macrons in our compositions, and I found that this dictionary was a little ... shall I say higgledy-piggledy about their inclusion. Also, macrons are completely absent from the English-Latin side.

For English-Latin, I found that the genral vocabulary in the back of my textbook for the semester (Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency), while shorter yet than Cassell's, was much more practical. For Latin-English, I still prefer my ELD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this book
For anyone who would like to further their Latin language knowledge, i would advise this book greatly. This book helped me get through 3years of Latin in high school, so i decided to get one of my own. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not very complete.
I suppose the trade-off for portability is limited content.I'm not yet at the stage to use the verb and noun tables, so I can't comment on those.Inexplicably, it doesn't break the words into syllables or show which syllable is accented, so doesn't aid in pronunciation in either Hebrew or English.Contains almost no religious words, even many commonly used in daily life.No list of first names or place names.

I haven't looked at other such dictionaries, so I can't make a comparison.Perhaps I expected too much.

Sivan, Dr. Reuven and Dr. Edward A. Levenston. "The New Bantam-Megiddo Hebrew and English Dictionary", (Revised and Updated), Bantam, 2009.

A Blessing

Amos Lassen

I have been a fan of the Bantam-Megiddo dictionary ever since I began learning conversational Hebrew and this new edition tops all others. It is larger in size, has more entries and is easy to use. It also has an explanation of grammar in both Hebrew and English and now has over 48,000 entries. Included are tables of irregular verbs as well as all forms of the Hebrew verb and noun declensions. It is convenient, a good price and highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful!
i bought this as a gift for someone in an esl class with some knowledge of english, and have only heard positive comments on how helpful it has been.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book!
I am actually using it to help me teach Sign Language to people who speak only Spanish! It has been such a great help! I have given this book to one of my students and ordered the Second Edition which is even more detailed! Thanks!

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID not recommended
This amazing idea has been torpedoed inexplicably by the failure to include the gender of the nouns.
Is it masculine? Is it feminine? You'll have to look up each and every word in a REAL dictionary.
How this omission was chosen is beyond imagination. Bizarre.
Do not buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice :)
Compre este libro para una amiga que esta aprendiendo inglés y nos ha parecido muy bueno. Las ilustraciones son muy claras, tiene infinidad de palabras, lo recomiendo para incrementar el vocabulario. Muy bueno como texto auxiliar y de consulta.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB PROGRAM IDEAL FOR ANYONE LEARNING ENGLISH OR SPANISH!!!!
The New Oxford Picture Dictionary CD-ROM is a perfect addition for anyone serious about learning a ton of vocabulary in either English or Spanish. This edition of the Oxford Picture Dictionary contains many words used throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. For instance, you will learn autobús and guagua for bus. Also, basurero and zafacón for trashcan. So, for those who are interested in learning the variations within the Spanish speaking world for a number of common words, this is a great starting place.I found that the 2009 edition does not distinguish between the dialectal differences throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, however use words that may be more common or considered more "standard" within the Spanish language.

Regarding the CD-ROM, each section is divided similar to the paperback 1998 edition. The words are spoken in native English and Spanish respectively. It's easy to use and because the entire book is on the CD-ROM, you do not necessarily need the paperback version. You simply click on a word to hear how it is said.Youhave an option to hear and read all vocabulary in either English/Spanish, Spanish only or English only. Which makes it more unique and for the price the most affordable way to learn thousands of words effortlessly.Seeing a picture, hearing the word spoken and using a visual approach to learning, makes the process easy and the vocabulary more memorable.

That said, all of CD activities and tests are in English as the Oxford Picture Dictionaries are created for those who wish to learn English, not a foreign language.Likewise, this program is their older version and works only on XP or older for Windows. I'm not certain how it will function on newer Macs. The newer CD-ROM offered by Oxford does not have a bilingual version. So, if you are like me...using their bilingual Spanish/English CD-ROM and texts, the newest CD-ROM will not benefit.

I find the Oxford bilingual series to be the best on the market and the least expensive. They are easy to use and contain some of the most essential vocabulary words one would need to know no matter what language they are learning.I highly recommend the CD-ROM as it is a great resource for any serious student or language-learning enthusiast such as myself.

Thank you! ... Read more

This is a nice size and seems to be pretty comprehensive.I am Spanish illiterate, so we will see how it goes on my next trip to Costa Rica.I also bought an electronic translator and a Spanish CD course...I think this book will nicely compliment the other two...
Received quickly and in better condition than described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish/English Pocket Dictionary
Book was delivered promptly & in time for our vacation. In very good condition. Very useful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential if you want to learn Spanish.
I've been studying Spanish when I have time. I took two years of classes when I was in school, but that was from 1998-2000. Working with mainly Spanish-speakers for the last 4 years, I've been trying to get fluent in the language. Aside from My Spanish Coach for Nintendo DS (which I highly recommend), my other main tool for now is this dictionary. When I was studying Japanese, I had the Langenscheidt Japanese dictionary, and it was great. This Spanish one is just as good, maybe a little better! There are tons of common and uncommon words, and even some that I wasn't expecting in here (like a certain word to describe when someone's...well, in the mood).

The format is very organized, easy to read, and the words aren't stupidly small for a book of this size. Honestly, I don't know what more to say other than that I love this dictionary and it's helped expand my vocabulary a bit, though that kinda goes without saying. I also appreciated the dozens of verb conjugation charts on the last couple of pages. They didn't have to put those here, but did, and they're fairly commonly used verbs too. Aside from just the definition of the word for the dictionary portion, there are usually different ways of using the word or different sentences to give you an example of when you'd use which form. This is more than just a standard 'this word is this in Spanish' dictionary.

There's nothing bad here- this is a steal at the price and is an excellent companion for anyone studying Spanish, or sometimes needs to know how to say a word when they're out and about, but don't feel like carrying a bigger book around.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best for a Reason
I wanted a portable dictionary for studying abroad without compromising on the content. This Pocket Spanish dictionary has the complete lexicons for English and Spanish, as well as idioms, conjugation rules/tables, tenses and other miscellanea in the back. The pages are simple to flip through, and the text is easily discernible via black/blue color, bold, italics, etc. The cover is made of a very sturdy material so the pages won't get crumpled into a big mess if you carry this in your bag. I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for average use
Remember it's Arabic-English, not English- Arabic. You have to know your Arabic to use this book. Other reviews explain it's strong points eloquently.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a must owned Arab-English Dictionary
I'm happy with Amazon for its swift delivery of my order. Accordingly I'm supposed to receive the book latest 29th July but instead I got in a matter of ten days.Thank you Amazon.

Now for the book - I've got several arab-english dictionaries that I switched from on another whenever I need to search for a word. But The Hans Wehr dictionary proved otherwise. It is easy to use and the user gets the benefit of several definitions explained and examples to show its usage. Based on the three letter root of Arab language words are easily searched.

The only gripe I have is it's pages. They are thin and delicate and can be easily torn through everyday usage.I do not know if you have the hard cover version, I have not seen one and bought the paperback version then. Another plus is the clear printing easy to read format.

Nonetheless I'm happy with it and find it valuable as recommended by many authors of Arab Language authors. Its a 'must owned dictionary'.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Islamic language studies
A wonderful resource. No personal library or Islamic language study center should be without a copy. You won't be disappointed in your research for root meaning of words.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference for Arabic study
Even the best Arabic language course benefits from being supplemented by a proper Arabic-English dictionary like this one.It is useful as well as interesting to see how each Arabic word is related to other words derived from a common three consonant Semitic stem. For such a purpose I find Han Wehr's dictionary to work quite well.

5-0 out of 5 stars How do I love this dictionary? Let me count the ways
I didn't realize what a wonderful dictionary this was until mine got stolen (here in China).

If you want a good dictionary, then there are several things that you will need, at a minimum:

1. Chinese-English and English-Chinese in one single volume (instead of having to buy two volumes that you need to lug everywhere).
2. Portable and paperback and light enough to carry.
3. Characters indexed by radicals and then by stroke count after that.
4. Simplified characters as well as traditional (in hexagonal brackets in this particular book).
5. A good sampling of words that can be made by combining the root character with several other characters, and PINYIN NEXT TO THOSE COMBINATORY WORDS (since seeing a character next to one that you don't know entails your looking up that character to find its spelling-- and some of these characters can take as much as 20 minutes to look up).
6. Traditional characters and Hanyu Pinyin *in the same place* (the only place that uses traditional characters is Taiwan, which also uses Wade Giles-- to varying degrees of consistency-- and that can be a bit confusing as a way to look up a word).

Finding a dictionary that fit all those constraints was impossible-- IN CHINA!!! (Can you imagine being in China and not being able to find a suitable Chinese dictionary?). There were a good number of dictionaries that had 2 or even 3 of my needed things, but not one (and this is after visiting about 15 bookstores) that had the same features as this dictionary. When I asked for dictionaries that contained traditional characters, people looked at me like I had exposed myself to them.

This dictionary used to be sold in China. I am not sure what happened. But every single store to which I went in this city was sold out. So apparently many other people have realized the value of this dictionary.

If you are a student coming to China to study Chinese, be warned that it is best to bring your own dictionary with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Speak English
Concise English-Chinese / Chinese-English Dictionary (Chinese Edition)Recently met a young man from China who spoke almost no English. This book arrived in just a few days and was greeted with many smiles. A hungry man at a banquet couldn't have been happier. I am very pleased as well. Thanks Amazon and "hellofromyang".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Legend
I have bought almost all of the Chinese dictionaries commonly available, and this one remains the "go-to" workhorse in all situations needing a quick Chinese-English translation.

It is small enough for the pocket (not as small as the tiny Langenscheidt Universal which I use when I don't want to have a "bulge"), but not wanting in words. It's packed to the brim!Yes, the print is small.I'm sorry for folks with worse eyesight, for for those who can see small print, it is a boon that they could cram so many words, example sentences (both English and Chinese, which are ESSENTIAL to understanding), traditional characters, and a true radical system inside, as opposed to Lagenscheidt dictionaries which have a non-standard alphabetical by pinyin layout.

The coverage of this little dictionary is really large for a pocket dict.I essentially use it for a desk top dictionary, only turning to my Chinese-Chinese dict once in a while. This more than suffices for almost all everyday reading, conversation, that the advanced user of Chinese would encounter.

I've bought 2 of these already, and I think the legend will continue once I wear through this one!As far as I see it, this pocket dict is the only true dictionary (ex sent, true radicals, trad char etc), the others are more like guides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chinese-English Dictionary
Works well for me - If I need to explain a word in an English class, I just flip to the English word, and there are the Chinese characters along with the Pinyin. Most times, This is faster than their ubiquitous electronic dictionaries. The second half of the book is a more challenging process of matching the Chinese character(s) using the alpha Pinyin spelling of same.Useful for family names. At this time, the 2nd ed. is available for a very favorable price.
There are a few times when the word isn't there, and this is where the electronics excel. All in all, a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher said perfect!
I bought this for my 8 year old daughter to help her with her Chinese lessons. She is at a big disadvantage being the only non-Chinese child in the class, and we've had to rely on the kindness of her teachers to assist her with her homework questions. This dictionary is such a big help for her.Not only does it have both the Chinese characters and the Pin-Yin, it has both Chinese to English and English to Chinese look ups.Now I can finally help her with her homework- and perhaps learn some Chinese myself!!Her Chinese teacher and the school directors thought this was a great dictionary for both adults and children.

If a larger print version comes out, I will buy it to keep here at home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bilingual Dictionary
I have ordered dozens of these and give one to each of our ESL students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vast contents but limited user-friendliness
This dictionary/translation guide has almost every word I could possibly need, so I love that aspect of it.Every time I go to the book to reference something, it is there...MARVELOUS.The only reason I chose four as opposed to five stars is that the verb guide in the center of the book is not quite as user-friendly as I had anticipated.I am able to use the book and guide without difficulty, but there are some students in my class that struggle with the guide.I think the guide is more helpful for those that have a decent grasp on the conjugation of Spanish verbs than for those who my already struggle with Spanish grammar, including but not limited to verb conjugation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anna Rivera's Review of Vox Compact Spanish Dictionary
To tell you a little about my background, I am the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews newsletter. I am also a native Spanish speaker and a Spanish instructor. In addition, I am the author of two learning-Spanish products offered at Amazon.com (USA):

1. Anna Rivera's 1000 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Words (English and Spanish Edition)
2.Anna Rivera's 800 Plus Most Powerful Spanish Phrases (English and Spanish Edition)

Probably the first thing that any person who wants to learn Spanish should buy is a quality Spanish-English dictionary. Unfortunately, there's a lot of really bad ones on the market, and the beginning student often doesn't know where to look for quality.

The Vox Compact Spanish and English Dictionary is among the best, not only for its size, but also for all the additional material that you normally wouldn't find in a Spanish-English dictionary.

The Vox Compact Spanish and English Dictionary includes over 85,000 definitions, all of which include synonyms, and an inclusion of hard to find business and technical terms. Travelers will also be pleased with the section on Spanish idioms - something that's often overlooked by other publishers. The Vox dictionary also includes verb conjugations and lists of irregular verbs.

This dictionary is well organized, easy on the eyes, and uses a readable font. I recommend it to anyone who needs a good Spanish-English dictionary. But I am only giving it 3 stars because there are dictionaries for Spanish-language learners that I prefer over this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vox Compact Spanish and English Dictionary
You were prompt to get this book to my nephew, and the condition was excellent. Thanks so much for your quick service and immediate attention.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This dictionary just didn't cut it for me. Besides not having many of the words I tried to find, it doesn't tell you if a word is masculine or feminine in the English side. For example, if you look up "water" you will find "aguá" but you will need to look up agua in the Spanish side to find out that it is masculine.

Another thing that bothered me is that it didn't have any examples to distiguish words of completely different meanings. for example "to leave"... it could be to leave a place (salir) or to leave something behind (dejar). good luck trying to get the right meaning with this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary for its size
This English-Spanish/Espanol a Ingles Medical dictionary is very complete for its size. I highly recommend it due to its ease of portability and its completeness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic but complete medical dictionary
I bought this book because I used to get it from the local library whenever I needed to do a medical interpretation. I finally decided to order it from Amazon so I don't have to head to the library whenever I get an interpretation assignment. This is a pocket-size book, but it has a wealth of terms that you can actually use if you're an English-Spanish interpreter, translator, a health professional or student, practicing or studying in the U.S., whose first language is Spanish, or an English-speaking health professional who sees Spanish-speaking patients. It is very handy whenever I come across a term that doesn't come to mind immediately or that I need to double-check.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 6++ star dictionary!!!!
I have been teaching Medical Spanish and Cultural Competency CME courses for over 20 years and cannot praise Glenn T Rogers, MD's English -Spanish/Spanish-English Medical Dictionary enough.
It is an excellent resource and the best Medical Spanish dictionary I have found throughout my entire teaching career, which is why I highly recommend it to anyone in the Health Care profession as well as to all Medical Spanish Instructors.
This third edition is extremely comprehensive and covers nearly every term my students have looked up in class, as well as those that I've always wanted to know.It is also most impressive in that Dr. Rogers includes many diverse and varied translations based on region and country, which affords one the opportunity to know which word or phrase to use depending on where ones' patient is from.
This dictionary entailed a great deal of research and is extremely accurate, not to mention thoroughly outstanding!
*An extra added bonus is the Code Status Discussion translation on the last page of the book, which many of my class participants point out is exceedingly beneficial.
Once again, I highly recommend it.

I teach English as a second language, and this is the dictionary that I urge my higher beginning students to get. It's a wonderful practical vocabulary builder.I have seen disappointed reviews from people trying to use these bilingual Oxford Picture Dictionaries to learn a foreign language (i.e., not English), and I don't think the OPD the best dictionary in that circumstance.Everything in the dictionary is geared toward American English and American society, and all the incidental material that Oxford University Press creates for the OPD (and there is a lot of it) is in English.

When used for the purpose for which it was designed -- learning English -- this is a fantastic asset.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great concept, but could be better..
I loved the idea of pictures to help learning languages..

However disappointed with the use of many words and chapters....

I feel it should be more "general" and geared for my "useful" korean words.

However, when learning Korean... the options are limited...

4-0 out of 5 stars Picture dictionary for adults and kids to learn English
This book was meant for Koreans learning English but the Korean words are under the English words so you can use it both ways. You might think a picture dictionary is for kids but this one is for grown-ups and is VERY well laid out by category. There are quite a lot of words illustrated including verbs, prepositions and nouns as well as adjectives.

3-0 out of 5 stars Picture Dictionary
This is a much simpler version of Oxford's other language picture dictionaries, but it is very useful. ... Read more

Product Description
The sixth edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary is updated, enlarged and enlivened with new words, new definitions, revised illustrative quotations--and a fully customizable CD-ROM.
If the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary is the mother of all dictionaries, the Shorter is its most accomplished offspring. At a fraction of the price, the Shorter offers much of the same content, and provides the same quality of lexical excellence as its parent dictionary.
No other dictionary comes close to the Shorter's range and depth. It offers over 500,000 definitions covering virtually every word or phrase in use in the English language--worldwide--since 1700. Each entry identifies a word's various meanings, origins, part of speech, pronunciation, and presents combinations in which the word is often found as well as cross-references to related words. The Shorter offers a historical and literary approach made famous by the OED, which no competitor can match.
Now with 2,500 new words and meanings based on the ongoing research program of Oxford Dictionaries and the Oxford English Corpus, the Shorter is fresher than ever. Some of the new words included in this edition are; Afrobeat, carbon-neutral, darknet, heaviosity, impactful, knuckle-dragger, nanomaterial, retro-futurist, smoosh, testosteronic, webinar, and thousands more. Also new to this edition is a never-before-published, introductory essay by language commentator David Crystal on the History of English providing stimulating insight into the development of the English language. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Dictionary To Own.
I just purchased this shorter 6th edition and I am very satisfied. It is a small joy to find a word with definitions so clearly defined. The CD-Rom that is included with the dictionary has the added feature of the correct pronunciation, "sound", of most words. And also offers foreign words and phrases with there definitions and pronunciations. If you are searching for a dictionary for yourself or as a gift, be advised, you have found it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
This was a gift for my sister, she is retired from schoolteaching and always debates in conversation others usages of words from television and print,i wanted to get her a reference worthy of her endeavor to occupy space on the gift she just received from my daughter, custom bookcases. Not being a scholar i did a little research started by a mention of oxford on NPR and i relied on reviews like this to make my decision.I didn't think i would spend this much because it is always a problem spending too much on anything for her and suffering her wrath,I made the right choice, she hardly complained about the price at all she was so taken by the package, the content, the history, everything. She uses it all the time and now i can trust her calls on language usage. This one worked for me,i think anyone would be happy here!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellence
An outstanding product in every respect, the dictionary is comprehensive of all the words that I have encountered, the definitions are concise and accurate and the type is easy to read. In the long run, this book saves money relative to the purchase of smaller or less comprehensive works. Five stars!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Australia-Amazon-connect
Shorter Oxford English Dictionary: Sixth Edition
Greetings from Australia.
The overall cost was a great incentive to use the services of Amazon. We found the service to be excellent but would, only use Amazon.com. and not a reseller. The books arrived on time but with very slight damage even though they were packed well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dust Jacket, CD, Lexicographomania and trivia
The impressive box cover is a foldable protective device and not a Slip Cover. The artwork on the slippery Dust Jacket is not reproduced on the blue covers, unlike the DK Oxford Illustrated Dictionaries. With strong glue and sensible folding, a home-made slip cover can be fashioned from the box cover.

Shamelessly, I can "request" my staff put on a plastic wrap right away (outside their job description!), while I am going to the computer to order another set for my home.Better investment than futures derivatives and other dictionaries, I think.

These two volumes need to have mylar plastic jackets with custom-made retaining end-pockets, so the publishers may want to consider this as an optional extra.I consider custom-made plastic jackets Mandatory, and those who do not want the Mylar jacket can just slip it away.

Thus plastic protected, this Dictionary makes excellent reading from cover to cover, like a novel. The layout is superb. The words stand out.Etymology is usefully condensed and unobstrusive. All words are of the Good to Know category, and this is the FEEL GOOD dictionary of all time. I read it recreationally.

I wondered if the CD proclaimed loudly on the protective box dropped out during shipping, but it was found securely stuck on an inside page at the end of Volume 2.Shrink wrapping on the 2 volumes means the CD is tamper-proof.

This dictionary is more likely to go up in price rather than down.It was once Eligible for Super-Saver Shipping (mine), but this is no longer the case.Lock in your order now, before you get charged for the CD, which I thought was a pleasant unadvertised bonus. There is a hefty premium for the CD with the Concise Oxford.

Much has been said of the scarily thin paper printed in Italy.I tugged on random pages and opined it can withstand a lifetime of reasonable use without tearing. It is not the heavy duty paper of the 1993 editionS, (there were several versions), which were ironically Printed in the United States of America, and had the American pronouncing key in many 1993 versions. This edition has the International Phonetic Transcription.

I pinched a singular thin page with both hands and managed to lift the spine half an inch off the table with that singular page before my nerves gave way, rather than the page.

The paper was of high quality; bright and pleasing to touch.Very little of the print on the reverse page can be "seen through", and the translucent effect was not noticeable unless you looked for it.Paradoxically, a different dictionary from another reputable publisher with much thicker Finnish paper had the print of the reverse page showing through.

Words are divided into:

A. MUST KNOW: the 3000 core words of any language which enables you to read the newspaper in that language,
B. SHOULD KNOW: the 10000 words which allows you to argue, persuade, communicate, get a raise, and make you sound smart,
C. GOOD TO KNOW: that is our SHORTER OXFORD forte. No archaic words. There is not a single word which might not come in handy one day. This is a fascinating journey of discovery into words I should have looked up, but was too lazy to do so at the time - reading in the toilet, space shuttle, being legit excuses, and
D. THERE TO KNOW: which is the 20 Volume "Mother" OXFORD, which is also fascinating reading, but I have rarely bothered to resort to it for two decades, except in extremis, and it remains a vanity possession.

The Head-letter of each and every entry is not auto-capitalised, unlike some idiotic 1993 versions. You can figure out how "Bangalore torpedo" is capitalised, but it is useful to know "clarence" the coach is not capitalised.

If only I had known this dictionary was so reader friendly, I would have raved less about some other dictionaries, which are now reduced to compendiums by this Shorter Oxford.Let me explain:

a.all Latin phrases are there, so there is no pressing need for a separate dictionary of latin phrases; and they are in useful phrase form, not in single word form which drives you crazy,
b.all French phrases in common and uncommon use are there,
c.all the commonly used Chinese, Japanese, asian romanised terms are there,
d.all the medical terms of a small medical dictionary are there - "trust me, I am a doctor" :) - so there is no need for you to buy a "just in case" medical dictionary. I believe this applies to the "contingency" dictionaries in other professional disciplines and liberal arts.I am afraid to point out examples from the fabulous array of medical terms and products, for fear that my colleagues might construe it as a sign of my prior ignorance of these terms,
e. a dictionary of Acronyms would now be totally subsumed,
...I think you get the idea of just how usefully comprehensive this work is.

I am going to postpone my purchase of a Hebrew-English dictionary after finding "Talmid Chacham" (smart-ass) properly explained. For legal definitions, I would rather have professionally researched words, but I can foresee this Shorter Oxford coming in useful as evidence of Every Day usage of the English words, replacing the Concise Oxford, like in libel suits.Just about every small "specialised" dictionary, even technical ones, has been subsumed within the latest Shorter Oxford. In this respect, it is great value for money.

At the time of this review, it has been marked down from the list price of $175 to $110.In 1993, the dictionary was 39.95 pounds sterling. Some later revisions were 79.95 pounds sterling; special versions priced, well, specially.Given the exchange rate then of English money, the current Shorter Oxford is cheaper today in absolute terms. And if you factor in the purchasing power of money in 1993, you are getting this at just a fraction of the inflation-adjusted 1990s price, and a free CD too.

To the Editors' credit, the Shorter Oxford steers well clear from being a thesaurus.Precise definitions are given, not a list of similar words leaving you wondering how to match the meaning with the appropriate simile.

The height of the Shorter Oxford is just slightly less than the 20 Volume Mother Oxford.I suspect these two colourfully jacketed volumes are to join the 2009 (now printed in China) Mother Oxford , forming the preface of a 22 volume set. Sneaky.

Other than my gripe with the unfortified Dust Jacket, this super-duper Edition merits association with the word "lexicographomania", which is not in the Shorter Oxford, but neither is it in the 20 volume Mother Oxford. And yes, the Shorter Oxford deliberately leaves out many portmanteau words where you can go figure out the meaning for yourself. ...
