4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect resource for any French student!
I purchased the Cassell's French & English Dictionary while I was taking a college French class as an online course. The course was actually designed as a 16 week course which I took as an 8 week session, so needless to say, it was intense. This dictionary kept me sane, and provided all the tools I needed to earn an "A" (97%) as myfinal grade. It was a wonderful help, and highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best French and German Dictionaries
I went to High School in the 80s when I learned German.I used many dictionaries and always found my father's old Cassell's to be the best.I could simply always find what I was looking for.

In the late 90s I had to learn French, I was surprised again to notice that Cassell's was the easiest dictionary to use.Originally, I thought that each dictionary would have its own characteristics and couldn't see how a publisher could really affect this.

And now...I'm on to learning Spanish. And will again be reaching for Cassell's!I've spent a lot of time in my life looking up words...I can tell you now: do yourself a favor and by this dictionary.

In the end, you'll save time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for quick reference -- needs updated! (details)
I use this dictionary in reading European literature and upon encountering French phrases, (such as in War and Peace (Vintage Classics) and in Agatha Christie mysteries.) It's also useful during my intermittent trips to Canada.

Here's what you get:

-- 55,000 entries
-- different meanings of the same word (e.g., "lead") are separate and numbered
-- the verb guides are helpful
-- there are 658 pages in total
-- it's pretty easy and fast to find the word you're looking for

For me, here are the drawbacks:

-- while the publishers state, "legible and easy to read," I would challenge them on this point. I need a magnifying glass to clearly see the punctuation marks. The fonts are very small.
-- while this volume proclaims to be a "dictionary," don't expect any actual definitions... there are none. So I was lost on words such as "loggerhead" ("lourdaud"), "usurious" ("usurier") and, "affray" (bagarre). I still don't know what they mean.
-- this book contains no obscenities -- maybe that suits some folks but when I encounter such words in text or as people speak them (very common today), this book will not help me determine what was said. Merde!!!
-- Pocket-sized (as claimed)? Well... if you have really big military-type pockets.

And if you are expecting an up-to-date French-English dictionary, this isn't it. It was revised and subsequently published by Macmillan in 1966 from the original 1904 edition. As far as I could determine, it hasn't been revised since then -- just reprinted. This likely explains the total absence of obscene words which the publishers no doubt wanted to keep mum from curious high school French language students.

This book works okay for me, the casual user, but I suspect that you could find a better one out there given a little research.

5-0 out of 5 stars arabic-english dictionary
FAbulous book for me who knows no arabic to try to convey words and ideas. It also has arabic to english so our friends can communicate with us and english to arabic so we can communicate to them.Love that it is all alphabetical. Easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars English Arabic Dictionary
I had this shipped to my son in Iraq when he was stationed there. It helped him to communicate with the guards there and came in very handy! Thank you so much!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am disappointed with the delivery of this item. Since I still have not received it I cannot possibly review it. I do not understand how paying for 1 day shipping takes 6 days to get here. Oh wait it isn't here. I will never pay expedited shipping with Amazon again. I have purchased from Amazon before and just shipped regularly more quickly than this. Maybe I will have to find another source.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have come across for learning Arabic
I have purchased many books on the Arabic language in the last seven years, since I converted to Islam. There
are many books that focus on classical Arabic that are useful, but this book tops them all for a few reasons. Firstly this is easy to read and follow. The Arabic font is actually readable with the transliteration alongside the English. This alone is a rare commodity considering the amount of books that are undecodable. Secondly the book has two dictionary directories. One from English to Arabic, and the second from Arabic to English. This makes it practical to find words that catch your ear, in passing, if you live in the Middle East. Or you can choose the English word and find the Arabic equivalent. The phrases in this book, far and wide, supersede the phrases I have read in other travel handbooks. I have lived in Egypt for Six Years, so I am speaking from experience on this matter. This book seems to be valuabe for the beginner, the intermediate, and the advanced class of learner. I have nothing to gain from this review, nor do I know the publishers. Hands down the best Arabic learning tool I have ever purchased. Mark my words friends! Asalaamualaikim!

Sincerely,
William Beattie

1-0 out of 5 stars Use at your peril
I don't know whether it's an issue with editing or if the authors really don't know what they're talking about. Either way, there are far too many errors and simply incorrect words and definitions to make this book useful. Examples: Their dictionary says "ibn" means "brother" ("ibn" is "son," and "ukh" is "brother") lists "ahlan" as "hello" and "marhaban" as "welcome" [as in welcome to my home] when the meanings are actually reversed; and many other examples.
This book would be disastrous for a beginner, DO NOT BUY. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Only the Best Concise Spanish-English/English-Spanish Dictionary
I use this edition myself. It's not only the best of the so-called "concise" dictionaries (in my opinion, nearly 1,300 pages is hardly "concise"), but it rivals in range and usefulness the most exhaustive of the larger, hardcover volumes. It's true that the larger, hard-to-handle book obviously contains more words and definitions, but I look at it this way: How often do you need to consult a larger book? I keep Larousse on my desk. At the moment, I'm preparing a Spanish version of my new translation of Mark's Gospel in More Bible Wisdom for Modern Times: Selections from the Early New Testament. Right now, I'm up to Chapter 12 and not once have I been forced to leave my desk and search a larger book for a more suitable word. Admittedly, Mark's vocabulary is pretty basic (and I have reflected this simplicity in my translation), but, if anything, that makes this Larousse even more useful, as it forces me to resist any temptations to use a less familiar or more picturesque vocabulary.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that good for English speakers
This fifth edition is not very useful for English speakers learning Spanish. It does not show the phonetic pronunciation of the Spanish words, although it does of the English words.I have seen the fourth edition and it is much better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be sure to have a magnifying glass handy
Hard to give a fair review for this book because the font is so small as to be nearly unreadable.Just try to look up a word quickly as you are trying to converse in Spanish. The Larousse compact dictionary is far more useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars THE PRINT IS TOO SMALL
I THOUGHT I'D SAVE 5 BUCKS BY BUYING THIS OVER A TRADE SIZE DICTIONARY.THE PRINT IS VERY SMALL AND ALMOST BLURRY.IT'S TOO DIFFICULT TO READ UNLESS I AM UNDER A VERY BRIGHT LIGHT.I AM AN AVID READER AND I DON'T HAVE PROBLEMS READING OTHER PAPERBACK BOOKS OF THE SAME SIZE, SO I CONCLUDE THAT THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THE BOOK, NOT WITH MY EYESIGHT.SPEND THE EXTRA FEW DOLLARS AND PURCHASE A LARGER SIZED DICTIONARY.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Fourth Edition
Small type and strange font makes this new version painful to use.I went back to the much superior 1987 Fourth Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best dictionary of its size, bar none
This dictionary was recommended by my Spanish teacher -- I don't regret buying it.Classmates who bought other ditionaries (such as the Oxford, I think it was) often needed to borrow mine.It simply has more of the words we needed to look up.Later, I bought the New World Spanish/English dictionary, and hated it.It seems to be missing a lot of words.Looking words up feels more frustrating. It's hard to explain.I just don't love the New World the way I love my Chicago.

The verb section is handy.Looking up phrases (not just words) is very easy and intuitive; you find phrases in bold, listed underneath their main word (for example, "Don't count your eggs before they hatch" would appear under eggs, count, or both).

Si habla español, este diccionario le ayudará tambien.Contiene buena información del inglés. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough words
I bought this dictionary because we are hosting 2 Nepali refugees. I needed something to help us communicate with them, the concept of this phrasebook is great, but it is just too small. It does not have enough words to use on the day to day basis.

3-0 out of 5 stars good survey of words, but nothing new
There's nothing here that you can't get in a more comprehensive phrasebook and guide combo. I took this to Nepal on a 31-day trip, and I checked it twice while bored and waiting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nepali-English Dictionary and Phrasebook
Book is concise and well organized. Solved my immediate translation problems. it is a good companion to the Teach yourself course.

4-0 out of 5 stars the dictionary is helpful
and this is a good book.
But I wish it would give a solid elementary grammar lesson instead of skipping around like these language books do.
Nepali language books are few in number.

2-0 out of 5 stars uses transliteration but NOT devanagari
There are two ways to represent Nepali words. first you can write them in Devanagari, which would require that you learn to read Devanagari ( the Sanskrit-based alphabet which they use) or you can use the closest-equivalent transliterated word using the English alphabet. this one just uses the transliteration. If you are serious about stuying Nepali, you would benefit more by getting the Devanagari version ALONG WITH the transliteration - I hope they do this for future editions.... ... Read more

Product Description
This practical dictionary is designed to help English speakers communicate in Thai. It is equally useful for those who can read the Thai alphabet and those who can't. Most Thai-English dictionaries either use Thai script exclusively for the Thai entries (making them difficult for westerners to use) or use only phonetic transliteration (making it impossible to look up a word in Thai script). This dictionary solves these problems by dividing the entries into three sections: Section One [English-Phonetic-Thai], Section Two [Phonetic-Thai-English] and Section Three [Thai-Phonetic-English]. The transliteration system is the same as that used in Paiboon Publishing's other books. You will find most of the vocabulary you are likely to need in everyday life, including basic medical, cultural, political and scientific terms.

Here are some of the features:

Consistent and accurate phonetic transcription of Thai sounds for those unable to read the Thai alphabet
A comprehensive guide to pronunciation
Thai script for those who read Thai
All entries organized in three easy to use sections
Thai alphabet guide showing different styles of Thai script to help you read shop signs and newspaper headlines

It's the ONE Dictionary You Can Really Use! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to have
This book is a very good tool. Out of all of the selection i think i picked the best one. I picked this one due to the Auther. He has many works on Thailand and i have been very impressed so far.

There are many English Thai Dictionarys out there. This one is abotu 1 inch thick. Its small enough to put in my pocket when i do travel and it has come in handy many times. I think so far there was only 1 word that i could not find i there. Dont remeber teh word now but i know it was not an everyday conversation word.

It also works wfor Thai's. When i girlfriend is trying to explain something to me she uses mine. She has a different one. But grabs mine first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
Absolutely indispensable. The three different sections give you three different ways to untangle the Thai language. The middle section--where you can locate Thai words simply by their sound--is extremely helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Accurate Translation, somewhat useful
This book is only barely useful "on the street."Thai is a very tonal based language and the same word can have vastly different meanings based on the tone of voice used and emphasis on different sylables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Thai dictionary at the moment
I went to Barnes and Nobles to check out all the Thai dictionary they had, and even asked them to order some more so I can see if the dictionary were adequate in terms of a variety of definition. The dictionaries were either incomplete and/or big and bulky. I then saw the reviews on this dictionary and decided to risk it an buy it. It is a perfect companion for those learning Thai. It isn't pocket size but it's small enough for traveling w/o taking up too much space. After checking out about 10 different dictionaries from various publishers (ex. Oxford) this dictionary is the top on the market right now. I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thai-English dictionary

using Thai characters. This is missing in many other Thai-English
dictionaries. The biggist problem is with the small font. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Well, it had to happen....
Twenty years ago I bought this book (7th edition) when I arrived as a foreign exchange student to study in the US.
I vividly remember the joy of finding a bounty of precise and clear definitions in this
fantastic book.I even copied a number of them out by hand and pinned them up on wardrobe, and I was a science major!
For example, I remembered the definition of "concise: "brief but comprehensive in expression".How could
you say it any better.

Well twenty years later, I proudly buy the current edition for my young son, hoping to pass on this joy.
And boy, did they dumb everything down into oblivion. This stinker of a dictionary is now full
of trivialities and consciously low-brow wordings. The new entry for "concise"?It says "using few words".

The only reason I give it two stars instead of one is that none of the other dictionaries I looked at were any better; seems
to be a lost cause.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, simple, easy and clear to understand
Be aware that this dictionary has more than a thousand pages. It is thick and is not a pocket size. The definitions are one the most concise, simple, easy and clear to understand of the many dictionaries I have owned. It also gives you some examples of sentence usage for difficult or confusing words. Tells you the origin as Latin, Old Eng., etc. This has to be my favorite handy dictionary.

Note:
I ordered mine used and I got the 2005 tenth edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Dictionary
This Dictionary has readable size print (our other one even my 10 year old couldn't read it was so small)and is HUGE but small, would be super easy to carry in your bag if you had to,
We are using it as a desk reference dictionary in our home for homework.
Highly recommend for grade school age kids especially who don't need tons of information, just the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars pocket oxford english dictionary
This is a great dictionary. It is easy to look up words and the book stays open while you are checking the spelling.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is mediocre to good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost NO use at all for English speakers going to China
My initial reaction was how lovely it looked, and how useful it was going to be, but the more I looked, the more I realised that the vocabulary items were not anything I was going to see in China. What a shame!

4-0 out of 5 stars good dictionary for two language
i think this is good bilingual visual dictionary. i brought for my son. he is very happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tools for learning
I purchased this dictionary for a Chinese friend who wants to learn english. It has been a very helpful tool in teaching her.I told another Chinese friend about the book and she wants one.So I am now ordering one for her. I was very pleased with the book. It makes it much easier for me to teach my friends to speak and read english. They can use the book alone to learn many words.I help them to say the word. They are very happy to have the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Vocabulary Learning
This is one of the more useful compendia of everyday Chinese vocabulary available. Most of its entries are basic -- it does NOT treat technical subjects like science, math, economics, etc. in depth -- but its coverage is VERY broad.Several of the other reviews, including both positive and negative ones, noted that the vocabulary has a "Western" bent.In some sense, perhaps, this is true (insofar as many of the simple, everyday objects we use are of modern Western provenance), but it is ridiculous to see this as a deficiency or flaw in the dictionary. If you care about being fluent in Chinese, you need to know words for everything from mascara to microphone, and armpit to asteroid. These words are not glamorous, and not particularly interesting, but they ARE essential for real-life language skills. And since most textbooks don't introduce this kind of vocabulary, this dictionary is a very useful supplement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures Pictures Everywhere!
As a newbie Mandarin learner I find this book extremely helpful and fun when I want to know how to say something. Its just a kool thing to have. glad i bought it. ... Read more

Book arrived promptly as promised.Excellent condition.Excellent packaging.A thoroughly satisfactory transaction.Five stars to the vendor and my thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Merci beaucoup !!!
Larousse offers a strong and affordable bilingual dictionary for persons who are studying French--or even French speakers studying English, for that matter. As dictionaries go, this IS one of the better hardcover dictionaries; and this edition of Larousse's French-English/English-French dictionary is bound to be a big help to many students.

People have noted that when Larousse updates their dictionaries they do more than window dressing--and they are right. You get great entries that reflect the changing times: the definitions of "software," "hostile takeover" and "baby sitter" are all included in this latest edition of the dictionary. Moreover, you DO get words that reflect the different nuances of a word whenever necessary. This is the hallmark of a fine dictionary.

The dictionary even includes entries for "foul" language; this just might help you! There are even French verb conjugations; and that's superlative for a dictionary in this price range. There's even a 64 page guide to communication that is very impressive.

The pages are made of paper that is slightly thinner than I would like but it's more than sufficient for the student. This is a minor point, naturally. The typeface is easy to read and I like how you can use this dictionary to translate back and forth by looking up entries in either French or English.

I recommend this dictionary for all students of French or even French speaking persons studying English. Not only will this satisfy students at the elementary level; it will also be most beneficial for students at the intermediate and advanced levels of study.

4-0 out of 5 stars For The Most Part Very Handy
This is my first dictionary in my attempts to read books and articles written in Modern Greek and for the most part it serves my purposes well. The words in Greek are easily accessed, for the most part available (i.e. most words I need to look up are present), and have definitions that fit well into whatever narrative I am reading. The book is fairly lightweight and portable but is a a little too large for a pocket (or at least my pockets). The words are in easily read bold print and the definitions are in a much fainter print that does not hold up too well for me in fainter light. The book stands up well to repeated use (no pages falling out so far). There is a section on pronunciation and the principal parts of some verbs but no extensive grammar section. Overall I am very happy with this book as a convenient reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greek Dictionary
There are several definitions to all greek words and so it is extremely difficult to include them all in one book, but Oxford has done it.
I hope everyone finds this as helpful as I have

5-0 out of 5 stars Best small dictionary for Modern Greek
There are not a lot of choices on the market for Modern Greek dictionaries. This is hands-down the best small-size dictionary you can buy. However, it certainly will not fit into any of my pockets, the format is really too large to be called a pocket dictionary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Oxford Greek Dictionary
I wanted this dictionary for an aid in studying my Bible.Unfortunately, it has mostly modern words which makes it not as helpful for my purpose. If you are looking for modern Greek words, this is a fine book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition only translates from English to French
As of September 30, 2010, what other reviewers say is true. This dictionary only has English entries that are translated to French. It looks like the digital publisher intended to sell the French entries translated to English as Volume 2, but this is not available in the U.S.

So is this product worthless? Not exactly. If you know French better than English, you could install this as your default dictionary, read an English book and see the words you don't know translated to French when you click on them. I have not tested this, but in theory it should work this way.

The Kindle is not bad hardware, but as with most things digital, poorly designed software and digital content are holding it back. Of course, good Kindle editions could pull it up to a new level. This product is not a good Kindle adaptation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware!!!
Do NOT buy if you want to translate from french to english - it does not. This should have been made clear in the description. I'm pretty disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do you really want to define le, la, and les ?
This dictionary contains all the words that you might need to translate into English if you're starting French and are going to read big-print books for beginners. The vocabulary included really doesn't touch current journals and commentary. Worse, the exemplary sentences, rare though they are, aren't very well chosen to distinguish between levels of usage or even to make subtleties clearer.

Definitely use "try before you buy" before doing what I did... (I didn't say that I was smart. )

1-0 out of 5 stars Disingenous Rip-Off
This is half of a language dictionary. It allows you to look up an English word and find a basic French translation, but not the converse. I'm not sure why anyone has given it a positive review because it is functionally worthless.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an honest deal
Kindle buyers beware! Whereas it is customary for foreign language learners to purchase either a monolingual or a two-way dictionary, this version is NEITHER. You only get English to French; so if you wish to read in French and need to look up a word, this is not the book for you. Having now taught foreign languages for 7 years, I find this disingenuous and unhelpful. It ought to state very clearly somewhere that you're receiving only half of a dictionary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source to study language ( intermediate level)
I was a teacher of English in Ukraine and I always used well-illustrated and informative books working with kids. This is a good example of such book! I will strongly recommend it as a good source for kids!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even worth Shipping.
This book is such a waste of money. To me it looks like a spanish picture dictionary that just had the words translated into Russian. It must clearly be for teachers instead of people learning on their own, because at the bottom of several pages it directs learning exercises like how do you spell... and says english words. It gives me almost no help. So it would be as easy to get onto the computer and find a translation site for a Russian word as looking it up in the book and I may not even find it in there! It frustrates me and is no help for learning. Don't buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dedicated to whom is intermediate students in Russian
I suggest to all students this dictionary, because it gives us the proper argumentations to discuss together our teacher or ourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for learning English
I'm an ESL teacher, and I've had two Russian-speaking students request this book. It's well laid out, and the illustrations are clear and colorful.I don't read Cyrillic, but the other reviewer mentioned a mis-translation; hopefully such errors are few.The book is very well made.In some cases, I felt that the English words were more European than American, but still understandable.Overall, a great tool for learning tons of English words on your own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wide array of scenarios
There are 168 pages of different scenarios pictured. Each item in the picture is tagged with a number. The numbers are listed on the bottom of the page with the English and Russian spelling. So, it helps if you already understand how to read Cyrillic letters.

The only thing I'm not 100% sure about is the Geography listing on page 124 has an incorrect Russian Translation for South America. They listed it as Þæíàÿ Àôðèêà - South Africa. So I don't know if there are any other small mistakes like this since I haven't gone through the whole thing yet.

Other than that, this is a good choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, Modern Dictionary
Good, modern dictionary.I am an ESL teacher to a Congolese family living in the U.S., and I've been searching for (and purchasing) Swahili dictionaries as I could find them on the internet. The Hippocrene Practial Dictonary is a recently published dictionary with more modern words than some of the previous dictonaries that I have purchased for teaching. In this age of technology and computers, this dictonary seems to contain more modern words and phrases for people living in the West, good for recent emigres and refugees. My Congolese student, Norbert, was impressed with the book and said he was sure he couldn't have found a better dictionary living in Central Africa.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blank pages
There is not a lot of choice of dictionaries in this language at a low price. Also, I understand there are many dialects of this language. The dictionary that I bought had several blank pages, maybe that was the reason that it was less in price. But it was not mentioned in it's description.Overall, I don't think that I would spend the money for another one because of the dialect problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars practical, inexpensive, has drawbacks
This dictionary is practical, and inexpensive (relatively speaking) and in print and available. Some of its translations are not accurate, eg the entry for Post Office uses the word "Afisa"for Office. The most common swahili word would be "ofisi" which is the place (from office)A couple of other small quibbles which makes me think it has not been created by a natural born swahili speaker. But I have found it to be extremely helpful in checking words (I already speak Swahili) andits great that it has both English/Swahili and Swahili English in the one book, with a goodly cover of words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source and easy to use
This up-to-date dictionary has helped me significantly for increasing my Swahili vocabulary very rapidly. It has many additions in the new version, and is applicable to modern usage in East African countries, as well as American and British English. The shipping was prompt and the item was received without damage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible!
Hodi! This book was a lifesaver for me when I was learning Kiswahili.I was always hearing words I did not know, and found myself consulting this book multiple times a day.I highly recommend you use it in combination with immersion and a structured language course.I still use this book regularly, and find that it keeps me fluent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars italian/english dictionary

5-0 out of 5 stars Larousse Pocket Italian/English English/Italian Dictionary
Understand what they're really singing in that Italian Opera you're listening to. Libretto translations are often Bowlderized when you buy opera recordings. Valuable & affordable pocket reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly pocket size
I thought this would be small enough to fit easily into a belt bag for on the go reference. Not so, it is the size & thickness of a regular paperback book taking up too much room. Good for use at home but clumsy for on the move usage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect dictionary to travel with
This book, coupled with the 575 Italian Verbs book, made it possible for me to survive in Italy for four months with little problems.Loved this book, very easy to read, very user friendly.Highly recommend this to any traveler or serious student of Italian.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, compact, easy to use Italian-English dictionary
This dictionary is perhaps not quite small enough to fit in your pocket on a trip to Italy, but it's not huge and could certainly find some day-pack space.More importantly, for anyone learning the language, it has comprehensive and clear coverage of any word you might come across in everyday use, including an excellent section on congugation of verbs, both regular and irregular. My only criticism is that I found that usually I wanted to look up a congugation from the English (ie, how do I say "he goes?") but the verbs were indexed from the Italian. So I'd have to look up "to go," and then go to the Italian side to look up "andare" to find where to find the complete conjugation.

The differences between American and everyone else's English is clearly differentiated. For those of us who already speak English of one variety or another, that probably isn't such a big deal but I should imagine that this would be a real bonus for an Italian speaker who needed to know the difference between "going to the bathroom" in the US and in Australia!!! ... Product Description
This practical Thai English, English Thai dictionary is designed to help English speakers communicate in Thai, whether or not you can read the Thai alphabet. All Thai words are listed in both Thai script and an easy-to-learn, English-like pronunciation system that fully expresses the Thai sound, including the tones and everything else you need to speak and understand Thai words correctly. It's a perfect fit with our other books, such as Thai for Beginners.

Unlike traditional dictionaries, there are three sections: you can look up an English word in the English section, look up a Thai word you read using the Thai Script section, or look up a Thai word you hear by its sound in the unique Thai Sound section.

Whether you are visiting Thailand for a short while or living there permanently, you will find most of the vocabulary used in everyday life, including basic medical, cultural, political and scientific terms.

Completely updated and expanded with more than 28,000 entries and 36,000 definitions, as well as a new, large font size that is easy on the eyes, this next-generation Paiboon dictionary now lists over 15,000 classifiers along with nouns. There is an extensive intro to speaking and writing Thai, with a handy font chart to help you read signs and newspaper headlines.

It's the one dictionary you can really use! And it comes in a portable size that is easy to carry around Thailand. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good dictionary.
Dictionary thoroughly goes over how to pronounce the difficult Thai syllables in an easy to understand approach.Have not really tried to look up the Thai words to get the English translation yet, but that seems pretty straight forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the software version!
There is a software version of this dictionary available from wordinthehand(dot)com. While this won't mean much for those who need something while traveling (I use a Talking Dict), the software version has excellent pronunciations of every last word in the dictionary. Not written pronunciations -- spoken voice pronunciations.

I have heard that Paiboon is going to be bundling the paper dictionary with a CD containing the software version sometime in the near future. If that happens, it should be a runaway best-seller.

I'm kind of a Thai dictionary fanatic, and I love the Damnern-Sathienpong Thai-English dictionary, which also features Thai pronunciations --- but not nearly as clear as the ones from Paiboon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary
Nice selection of English-Thai words. I have to keep refering back to the front pages for the Paiboon pronounciation though. However, I don't really use much on the thai script section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works three utilitarian ways!
I am so new and I really needed a good dictionary for this rather "strange" written language. Following the Thai itself with its 44 consonants and 20 some-odd vowels is not all that easy to learn at once. Of course, looking at English-Thai is a no-brainer. Then, the third option, phonetic transcription, was so easy for me right away! It is much faster than peering alphabetically through the Thai-English section. I actually heard a couple of words as well as saw the Thai script. I looked it up in the phonetic transcription, and, right there, next to it is the page number. I went to the page number each time and, looking up and down each of the two columns of Thai-English, there is the script just as I could see it. This system works and, for a beginner, it is essential! I tried the other dictionaries to no avail! This, I feel, recommends this dictionary rather well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatly improved - Don't hesitate to upgrade to this edition.
I purchased this dictionary as soon as it was available from the publisher. This dictionary is a great improvement over the previous edition. The inclusion of classifiers and "word register (formality)" is of great utility to any serious student of Thai. The introduction is also vastly improved. It serves as a quick reference for the Thai language as well as a guide for using the dictionary. It is packed with useful information including a pronunciation guide, examples of Thai font variations, and classifier usage.

As mentioned by other reviewers, the previous edition seemed to be lacking more than a few common words.During my most recent trip to Thailand, I kept this dictionary in my backpack at all times during the trip.I found its coverage of the vocabulary I encountered in "real life" nearly 100%.

Like the old edition, the new edition includes the "Thai Sound" section makes it easy to find that word you heard on TV or overhead in a conversation.

In summary, this edition is a must have upgrade over the old edition.Don't hesitate to purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Italian-English dictionary at a very affordable price
Great paperback dictionary for American English speakers who are studying Italian and as a quick reference for those who want to check something. Not only is the Italian to English section comprehensive in providing multiple forms of words that vary by gender or number, it adds value by including idiomatic expressions that employ the word. The front sections on Italian spelling and pronunciation, grammatical tables, table of regular endings of Italian verbs, and model verbs with six tenses are wonderful references "at a glance."

4-0 out of 5 stars New College Italian/English Dictionary
Easy to use and quite comprehensive.Print a bit small, but to be expected with a work of this scope.Would buy again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary, Binding Not Very Good
This dictionary is thorough yet easy to understand. It has a small grammar section and a verb chart of 20 pages with approx 200 verbs. The only problem is that the pages in the middle sectionare pulling away slightly from the binding on my new dictionary (hardly used)For this reason only I can not give 5 stars.I wish the publisher would use a little more gum on the binding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Item
I have been using this dictionary to understand Josh Groban's Italian songs. It has been very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good product

2-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking
I purchased this dictionary for a two week backpacking vacation. It was big and complex. The guy I was traveling with had a good dictionary. After carrying both of these for a couple of days we tossed this one in the the bottom of our bag and never opened it again.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT pocket sized.
This is not a pocket dictionary. A pocket dictionary should fit in your pocket. This is a conveniently sized dictionary for a backpack or a large purse, but by no means a pocket.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book for Spanish Learners at a Small Price

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Concise Reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Chinese Dictionary
I bought this book because I recently began learning Mandarin. It is a great addition to the personal tutoring and Rosetta Stone software that I am using. I really love the way it is designed. It is easy to use and really helps you understand how to pronounce the words correctly, as well as understanding how to read Chinese characters. I love it and I strongly encourage anyone who has an interest in learning Chinese to buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners
This is a great book/dictionary for someone learning Chinese. It has phrases that are helpful to learn the grammar and rules of Chinese. Highly recommended to own.

2-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners
print is too small for one thing.Definitions do not give any clue how to pronounce words.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I expected
I need to communicate in Chinese every now and then. I am not interested in learning achinese character. This book is what needed.By using Pin-yin symbols, it allows me to find my phrase of need without learning Chinese characters

5-0 out of 5 stars A Genuine Beginner's Viewpoint
A truly nice fresh approach. Excellent use of color.
It isn't simply a dictionary. In the English-Chinese section there are many useful tables and teaching aids.
For example:
under "expression", at the end of the "E" words, is a page and a half of "Useful everyday expressions".
under "have" is a whole page on how English expressions using the word "have" correspond with similar Chinese expressions
under "measure" there is a page long table of length and weight measurements

Often there are many examples of usage. Just after the table on measurements we have the word "meet". Several example usages are given.
e.g.
"she met him on the street"
"have you met tom?"
"can we meet next week"
"can this meet your requirements"
etc.

I also has a well presented index and an appendix called "Learning and lifestyle kit" on subjects like "Dictionary Know How" - Chinese characters don't have an alphabetical order like the one I am accustomed to, so how does one arrange them in sequence? Very helpful and nicely presented.

All I want, is to be able to communicate in Chinese. The finer points of fancy grammatical constructs and terminology are for a different category of learner.
What a really neat (in both colloquial and traditional senses of the word) balance this publication achieves.
