It is crucial to study how food resources are allocated in order to understand how invertebrate species of soft-bottomed benthic communities can live in the same environment, especially when belonging to the same trophic level. On the southern shore of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, the polychaetes Nereis virens (Nereidae) and Nephtys caeca (Nephtyidae) represent the main infaunal predators and are known to regulate (by predation) other populations within their community. For these animal populations, there is a high degree of spatial overlap in the horizontal dimension as well as vertically in the sediment column. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the feeding activity of N. virens and N. caeca in relation to several environmental factors. The feeding activity of N. caeca was further studied under natural and experimental conditions and a feeding experiment was carried out to evaluate how the food resource is subdivided in conditions of high spatial overlap. Finally, the prospecting activity of N. virens was described under natural conditions. N. virens and N. caeca exhibited a high degree of dietary overlap, particularly at the adult stage. This food resource overlap can easily influence the regulation of these species, even though they display different feeding responses to environmental stimuli. Tides and storm events can also influence the feeding behaviour. The purpose of this study was to quantify the agreement between perceived and objective measures of the natural environment and to assess their associations with physical activity. Perception of the natural environment was obtained through survey data. Objective measures of weather and hills were created using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). When objective measures were compared to respondent's perceptions little agreement was found. Objective measures were not associated with any physical activity outcomes; however, several associations were seen between perceived measures and physical activity. "Sacred Earth" is a collection of essays that facilitates the examination of the intersection between ecocritical theories and religious texts and ideas. A great range of subjects, approaches, ad texts are considered. Very worth the consideration of any one new to the field of ecocritical studies. Even long time scholars in the area will find much that is useful.

great reference book
I wanted a good reference manual for understanding the 'old religion'and it's roots. This book seemed perfect.

An excellent reader, worth reading and rereading.
The advantage of readers is twofold. First, they allow one to cover a lot of ground with relatively little reading, allowing a fairly quick overview of the subject. Second, they can act as an introduction to writers whosework can be discovered in depth elsewhere. 'This Sacred Earth' offers bothadvantages. Those interested in what has been written and thoughtconcerning the links between religion, nature and the environment could doa lot worse than to start here. In addition, Roger Gottlieb's introductionsto the seven sections of readings presented provide a commentary on the keyissues and a guide through the diversity of the religious traditionsrepresented. In fact, diversity is one of the strengths of this book.Gottlieb is able to make links among the major world religions and otherworldviews, showing how environmental sensitivity and ecologicalspirituality transcend any one faith and are essential parts of what it isto be human. True, the book has an American bias (all the 'nature writers'in the first section are American, if you count John Muir as such), but thereadings in other sections are international enough to compensate for anyminor parochialism. ...
