Product Description
This book is devoted to the surgical treatment of epilepsy and its consequences, and provides an extraordinary perspective on the fascinating question of the relationship between brain and mind.Contrary to the current emphasis on statistics and objectivity, this book is dedicated to understanding the whole person, the life and experiences of the individual. It reports on cutting-edge technical skills provided with a human touch. This book reflects the understanding that the temporolimbic seizure originates in tissue providing the substrate for the emotional life and memory. Finally, it emphasizes the value of clinical research - here, conducted in the course of the diagnosis and surgical treatment of epilepsy - in helping to elucidate the relationship between brain and mind. ... Product Description
The techniques in Live, Learn, and Be Happy with Epilepsy, will help the reader build the inner power to do anything or become anything they want in life. The approaches in this book for dealing with epilepsy will enable the reader to reform a better direction in their everyday life of living and dealing with their disorder. Most important, this book shows the reader that they they can live a happy, healthy life with epilepsy. There are people here that understand what they go through and support them. This program will help you build confidence in yourself. Once they establish self-assurance, the reader will start to see their inner strength boost. When one quality improves, all their other attributes will enhance also. This book will give them the tools to learn how to incorporate epilepsy into their life so the reader can live with the disorder on a positive note. The reader can make life anything they want if they have positive goals to focus on and if they have a good understanding of how to approach them. This book gives the reader the materials they need to gain encouragement and strength to overcome having epilepsy and being able to live life to its fullest. In this book, we will focus on certain topics related to epilepsy that not many have discussed. One of the main goals in this book is to help the reader recognize that life has much to offer. Life does not have to stop just because you have epilepsy. As mentioned earlier, in this book we will be discussing what people go through emotionally when they have epilepsy. We will be going over different ways to help the reader emotionally, physically and spiritually. The aim in this book is to show readers how to live with epilepsy, empowering them to take responsibility for their life and well-being. Although, I acknowledge how other people with epilepsy feel living with epilepsy-there is a deeper level of human experience that is necessary in order to live with epilepsy. Unlike other books on epilepsy, Live, Learn and Be Happy with Epilepsy, does not focus on the same subject matter. Instead, it tries to motivate epileptics, urging readers to create their own unique journal by employing psychological and spiritual practices in combination with a variety of more traditional diet and exercise regiments. While seemingly revolutionary, the message is simple: It is important that epileptics learn how to live with epilepsy and endure it. Everything you do and say affects the people around you. Eventually if people with epilepsy do not learn how to deal with all these issues, they could end up really destroying themselves emotionally, physically and spiritually. One way to prevent this from happening is to develop a lifestyle that is suitable for your own needs. The reader needs to make sure that they create a lifestyle that is going to make them happy over time. They need to be their own designer, creating pathways to a fulfilling future. There is a whole world in front of you. This world has millions of opportunities just waiting for you to encounter. It does not matter what age you are. You can achieve anything you put your mind too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good review
This book "Live, Learn, and Be Happy With Epilepsy" is a good reminder of some simple, yet effective methods of coping with epilepsy. It obviously isn't a cure, but a helpful guide in giving some overlooked strategies in dealing with some of the non-physical aspects of the disease such as stress, anxiety, etc. This book is a good tool in the toolbox in dealing with epilepsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
This book has ben a life saver for my mother who has epilepsy. There are really good recommendations for every day control of the disorder and how to live a happier life. The book is easy to read and has a wealth of information you won't find anywhere else. Kudos to the author.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, potentially dangerous
The author of "How to Get Wealthy Writing Informational Books for the Internet", also the author of this book, should be stopped. The information presented was only minimally specfic for epilepsy and included recommendations for relaxation, self-improvement, diet, exercise, etc. that one suspects will come out from the same author for a multitude of other diagnoses. One of the first recommendations for relaxation was to take a warm bath. Most neurologists warn against taking a bath alone because of the risk of drowning if a seizure occurs. The many grammar and spelling mistakes leads me to believe no editors or spellcheckers ever got near this manuscript. There are many books on the topic that are better than this one. ... Read more

Product Description
Advances in epilepsy research are occurring at a rapid rate, resulting in a bewildering wealth of data. The implications of this new knowledge for future research and clinical practice can be confusing. This volume concentrates on the concepts and models of epilepsy that have been developed as a result of this research. Written by prominent researchers in the field, it describes and discusses the relevant models used to address critical questions, and reviews the most up-to-date issues. Chapters focus on the pathways and mechanisms through which seizure activity is initiated and spread, in both normal and abnormal brain tissues, and discuss the special properties of epileptogenesis in the immature brain. In a field in which rapid advances lead to constant update of empirical data, this book takes a conceptual approach to the subject and provides a solid framework within which to understand the emerging issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Epilepsy: A Question of Models & Hyperexcitability
Schwartzkroin's edited book is the best experimental monograph available for the novice and seasoned epilepsy research scientist. It compares and contrasts the different genetic models of epilepsy in addition to many other facets of the field. It discusses the GABA ion channel model, aberrant synaptic neurobiology, rodent and primate models, pharmacology of agents inducing and treating the various syndromes.I used this as helpful background to a Grant I wrote on the Strasbourg rat and absence epilepsy. For 2005, the book still remains relevant and useful as a tool even though it was written several years ago.Additional areas of exploration included kindling (chemical and electrical), neurotransmitter chemistry, the differences in the developing and immature brain. It goes into c-fos, c-myb, c-jun and transcriptional regulation of the epileptic state. ... Product Description
Missing Michael A Mother's Story of Love, Epilepsy, and Perseverance is the author's moving account of her son's struggle with epilepsy, its complications, and the effects of the drugs used to treat it. The story covers a time period of over fifteen years as the family attempts to maintain normalcy even as Michael's condition and treatment often envelop him in a haze-like state. Michael's parents are faced with the unenviable task of determining how many seizures are "acceptable" and how much drug is simply "too much." Michael's condition over the years is wildly variable. There are moments, days, and weeks when he bears little resemblance to his gregarious, mischievous pre-seizure self. And while the family is grateful for Michael's presence however he is, there are moments of pure joy when his true personality manages to break through the drug-and-seizure-induced fog. Occasional comments from friends and family such as, "Michael seems more like himself," or "Michael seems so much more alert," are indicative that others in his life miss facets of Michael as well. In Missing Michael..., a mother lays bare her thoughts about school and health care systems, societal indifference, and the harm that results from lack of compassion and tolerance. She acknowledges the dedicated professionals who have helped Michael medically and academically. She applauds Michael's strength of spirit and his courage and ability to overcome substantial obstacles. And throughout its pages, this mother's story celebrates the bond of family and the power of love and hope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story!!!
This book was excellent.I have epilepsy myself and when I read it, it brought back memories of what happend to me when I was younger.I applaud the parents for showing the support they did for their children!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book!I am NOT the only one going through this!
This book was so helpful to me, as I care for my own epileptic daughter. It is a real look into our lives.I think that this book can help others understand what we go through when we cannot get the seizures under control.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Families
Missing Michael is a wonderful and compelling book.As gripping as their parents' love for their son is the unyielding love and support from Michael's big sister Meaghan.Families will be faced with challenging times and can learn from this Family that has truly persevered. This is an excellent work from author Mary Lou Connolly and should be shared with those you care for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facing Uncertainties
As a parent and psychiatrist treating people with physical disabilities, I found this book a gripping and compelling account of the trials and tribulations of the Connolly family. I was impressed by the author's candid description of how she dealt with frustration, helplessness, and powerlessness of the life-and-death uncertainties of her son's seizure condition. I applaud her self-disclosure in the service of helping others who face similar challenges, and I recommend this book highly to any parent dealing with their child's illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are never alone...the village is always there
Last night, I sat down and read Missing Michael. The book did not leave my hands until I read the last page. For those that were a part of the Mary Lou and Michael's village, this book is a testament that it takes a lot of people to be a safety net for those that we love and respect.I applaud Mary Lou, Michael,Meaghan and Barry for not shutting out the village. For allowing those near and afar to help when and where needed. For taking the chance to allow others see the vulnerablity, yet the dignity that Micheal possessed (even when He did not always realize it). For me, the best part of the book shares that there are people within our village that do understand and care outnumber by far those that don't.This sharing is a primer to those who are friends, family, co-workers, andcare professionals of those with Seizure Disorders. Mary Lou thank you - I have a better understanding because of your words.
I look forward to the sequel where we get to see what Michael's mark on this world is realized. ... Read more

Product Description
Unlike many other diagnostic procedures, EEG, now over 80 years old, and epilepsy monitoring, now over 40 years old, have demonstrated their usefulness and stood the test of time. Although the benefits of these diagnostic procedures are clear, monitoring is currently not available to the majority of patients in need. One of the factors limiting broader implementation is the lack of practitioners with special expertise.

Epilepsy and Intensive Care Monitoring was developed to address this concern. This practical volume contains detailed chapters covering all areas of clinical epilepsy monitoring. Featuring expert authors from major epilepsy centers, this seminal work reviews all current procedures and applications for monitoring adults and children with epilepsy in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and the ICU.

Opening sections are devoted to indications, procedures, administrative considerations, and technical aspects of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU monitoring, followed by dedicated sections on EEG diagnosis and localization and monitoring of neurological disorders in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU. The book concludes with special procedures and an Appendix with guidelines for organizing epilepsy monitoring centers and technical aspects of EEG monitoring.

Key Features include

  • Covers both adult and pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU monitoring
  • Contains over 235 high-quality EEGs and other illustrations, including an 8-page color section
  • Comprehensive coverage; no other book in this area has comparable breadth and depth
  • Clinical Focus Expert authors tell you when and how to perform the procedures they discuss

Epilepsy and Intensive Care Monitoring: Principles and Practice is the essential reference for clinical neurophysiologists and neurologists at all levels seeking to improve their monitoring skills or understand and implement the latest innovations. This text is also a useful one-volume resource for all others involved in the field including trainees, ICU physicians, EEG technologists, and more. ... Read more

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, and original observations in the field are often the key to diagnosis and successful treatment. Physicians new to the field as well as seasoned practitioners will benefit from more than one hundred case vignettes that explore the universe of epilepsy as it presents in daily practice. Some of these cases challenge long-held views about epilepsy and others bring the reader to the limits of our understanding of epilepsy, both in clinical and basic science. To improve the interface of clinical and basic science in epilepsy, basic scientists comment on the potential mechanisms underlying clinical observations, and clinicians assess the potential impact of recent results of experiments in the laboratory. This book highlights the importance that original observations have in inspiring both new treatments and continued research.

* Presents unique and challenging case vignettes in epilepsy contributed by eminent physicians in the field
* Provides practicing physicians with examples of how baffling cases were handled and solved

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Poor and Precious Little At That
I waited some eight months to obtain a copy of this book -- eight months of my first pregnancy. It wasn't worth the wait. There is so little substantive information in this book tailored to pregnant women with epilepsy that I could have written the book myself. For example, except for the single statement that women should check with their doctors about whether their anti-epilepsy drugs are contraindicated, the chapter on breastfeeding features only general information on how to breastfeed an infant and offers nothing specifically about the breastfeeding problems of women with epilepsy. The chapter entitled "After Delivery" provides safety tips such as "Store medications in childproof containers" and "Use guards on stoves and cookers."For this we need a guide for women with epilepsy?Specific information for women with epilepsy throughout the rest of the book is largely common sense as well and offered in most pregnancy or epilepsy books. This is a complete waste of money. ... Written for people with epilepsy, their families, doctors and teachers, UNDERSTANDING EPILEPSY casts light on a rather mysterious condition, and in the process helps people to come to terms with it. This new edition of UNDERSTANDING EPILEPSY answers all the vital medical questions, including: What is epilepsy? What causes it? What are the different types of epilepsy? What are the different types of seizures? How is epilepsy diagnosed? How can it be managed? How does it affect older people, children and disabled people? What sorts of activities should a person with epilepsy avoid? But this book goes beyond the medical facts to discuss the social implications of epilepsy. UNDERSTANDING EPILEPSY takes a frank and sympathetic look at the condition that can often make people feel discriminated against, or stigmatised. Most importantly, it discusses the advantages of openly acknowledging the condition - how this leads to acceptance on the part of the affected individual and possibly more tolerance from the general public. ... The clinical management of patients with epilepsy and the associated medical literature are rapidly evolving. This book differs from other epilepsy textbooks by focusing specifically on topics where the available evidence is sufficiently well developed to be synthesised into straightforward summaries of proven therapies. When evidence is missing or there is doubt, controversy or ambiguity, the distinguished authors offer treatment recommendations based on practice guidelines or consensus statements that span the gaps in evidence while pointing to those areas where further research is needed. The initial chapters cover critically important aspects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and surgical treatment such as when to start and stop AEDs, how to monitor their effectiveness, special considerations in women who become pregnant, and when to consider surgery to alleviate seizures. The following chapters cover the therapy of seizures when they develop after traumatic brain injury or stroke, and the treatment of concomitant depression and anxiety in patients with epilepsy. The final chapters discuss emerging topics in epilepsy: the treatment of the post-ictal state, technologies to predict and detect seizures, strategies for closing the treatment gap and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. The contributors are renowned experts in their fields who successfully and succinctly present state-of-the-art reviews based on the medical evidence designed to help the clinician be as best informed as possible in the care of patients with epilepsy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If your child has a seizure, you MUST have this book!!!
I can't begin to describe the grief and fear and utter isolation I felt when my daughter had her second seizure.I remembered that knowledge is power, and I needed to feel powerful. This book gave that to me and so much more!Suddenly terms made sense and I wasn't alone anymore. The section on family coping is amazing: it's as though the authors have reached inside your mind and put down every emotion you've gone through and some that are yet to come. There are case examples throughout that are uplifting, and yes, sometimes a little frightening, but very helpful to read and very enlightening. Most importantly, the book is positive throughout without minimizing what you're dealing with.My only complaint(and this goes for all books, websites, etc) is the use of percentages to illustrate how uncommon different seizure types are, or how many kids outgrow, etc.We already know our kids beat the odds, we don't need to be reminded, and frankly those numbers that in the beginning were a comfort, now are depressing.Again, if a child in your family has seizures, YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book, very informative, comforting, a must read!
This book contains the answers to most, if not all, of your questions regarding how seizures and epilepsy will affect your child and family. It will also help you know which questions to ask your child's physicians. It is a most complete work. In five sections it describes why seizures occur, diagnosing, treating, coping, and living with epilepsy. Please do yourself a great favor and purchase this book. It is written in language a parent will understand without previous medical knowledge and also it is written with compassion and optimism. I have recommended this book to my family and friends who wish to understand more of how epilepsy is affecting my son's life. You won't be disappointed, buy it today!

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Book after Diagnosis
Excellent first book after you have received the diagnosis on your child.Good overview. After absorbing this information, you will want to move on to books that deal with the specific type of epilepsy with which your child has been diagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great comfort
When my 13 year old son had his first seizure, I completely freaked out. When he had a second seizure, I completely lost it and became full of anxiety, fear, and anger. But after reading this book, I found great comfort knowing that all the emotions I had were "normal".The book is also easy to understand, and covers a lot of information which has helped me to become more informed regarding seizures and epilepsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend for parents of a newly diagnosed child
After hours of internet searching and bookstore browsing with not a whole lot of usable results, finding this book was great. It is clearly written, easy to understand, and covers all of the different causes for seizures, as well as medications and some discussion of the physiology of seizures.I am ordering another copy for my daughter's preschool teachers, who want to be as educated as they can be so that they are prepared for potential seizures at school. ...
