Product Description
Epilepsy is like no other medical condition. It hits about one person in 100, and it can start at any age, sometimes for no apparent reason. Seizures may strike often, or almost never. Attacks take many different forms, from violent convulsions and unconsciousness, to flickers of "absence" as brief as a passing thought. What, then, is epilepsy? What does it do to your life, and what options do you have?

This authoritative new addition to the Your Personal Health series explains what we know today about this unpredictable disorder and gives detailed, practical advice on living with it, in yourself or a loved one. Topics include:
- how to recognize different kinds of epilepsy
- how and why the brain produces these various patterns
- what tests and procedures are used to diagnose epilepsy
- how drugs can help-or harm
- when surgery makes sense
- epilepsy in pregnancy, childhood and old age

The author includes frank discussions of lifestyle issues such as family relationships, school and work, sports, driving, drinking and drug use, and hands-on advice for managing a seizure.

Comprehensive and up-to-date, complete with illustrations, case studies and a resource list, Epilepsy and Seizures is your guide to managing a complex and often frustrating disorder. ... Read more

Product Description
Epilepsy is neither an illness nor a disease, but a brain disorder, frequently associated with neurological and psychosocial difficulties. It is not a purely 'neurological phenomenon' and it requires a juxtaposition of both the neurological and sociological components to elucidate the 'unexplored' dimensions of this disorder. Although clinical, neurological, biological, psychiatric and even therapeutic aspects of epilepsy have been fairly consistently reviewed, relatively little is known about psychosocial aspects of this condition. Social research into epilepsy has been a 'shadow-dweller' for too long and a publication on these lines is long overdue. This book fills a gap in the literature in social context of epilepsy. The main objective of this book is to advance our understanding of social aspects of epilepsy; to encourage further research that draws on reported studies in epilepsy; to introduce the targeted audiences to applied social research into epilepsy; and, to illustrate the benefits of such research for health policy change & practice. This book demonstrates the significance of social aspects of epilepsy by presenting a series of articles on topics that have not largely been discussed in 'neurological circles'. Thematically, this volume focuses on 'psychosocial' context of epilepsy with particular emphasis on 'social' context of the disorder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Epilepsy: Dynamic Models & Multicellular Processes
Milton and Jung's book is geared to the epileptologist, mathematical modelers, EEG personnel, the research scientist, and the neural engineer. This is not easily digested and understood. You have to read the book in sections to obtain the greatest insights. The book is better on theory and the physics of synchronization processes. The end of the book discusses the chance for a electrical defibrillator. We are presently at a very preliminary stage of development even though a vagal nerve stimulator has been found effective in certain refractory cases of uncontrolled seizures. This book firmly places Epilepsy as a dynamic illness with chaotic, often unpredictable characteristics and sets in motion ideas for a cortical integrated defibrillatory device.Let's hope we innovate and obtain one soon for clinical trials. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Frightening, sad and depressing
My son was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, so I bought many books on the topic. I was especially interested in this one as I was hoping to understand epilepsy from his perspective since he's not quite old enough to verbalize his experience. We are at the very beginning of our journey with epilepsy, and this book really made me afraid of what is ahead of us medically and socially. I thought this was a grim read. If you're looking for information about epilepsy, I would recommend "Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood: A Guide."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read aloud
This was a good book to read aloud although if you were reading it to the age group that it is meant to be read to, then your students are not going to understand all the technical terms used throughout the book. It was good however to start off with this book for a presentation to adults because it gave them a good idea of what epilepsy is before the actual lesson began.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for my son
I bought this book for my 4 year old son who has epilepsy. It was helpful in explaining what's happening to him, why he has to take medicine every day, and why he has to go see the doctor. Also, it was really helpful when he had to have an MRI because it explains the test and has an illustration of the machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad I found this!
My 3 yr. old daughter had a seizure suddenly last year and our family was thrust quickly into a world with tests and appointments that we didn't understand and a diagnosis that was bewildering to say the least.I was so excited to find this book as it explained to my daughter from a child's perspective what had happened to her and the tests and appointments that we continued to undergo. It was also a great reminder to me of how confusing this whole situation must have seemed to her as well!Would recommend this book to anyone with a child that has experienced seizures or has been diagnosed with epilepsy. Also, to doctors and educators to teach other children and family members about the diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle Story about Seizures in Kid's
This is a beautifully illustrated book for children, parents and families of those dealing with seizures and epilepsy. The story is a simple one of friendship between a boy and a girl when Teddy starts having seizures. The book is well written and helps kids understand what seizures are and what do they have to go through with test and treatment.
I found the explanation of the EEG quiet genial....It is like a phone and your brain is talking through the EEG.....very easy for a child to capture.

Product Description
The third edition of a benchmark reference, Epilepsy in Childhood and Adolescence has been completely updated to include information on the latest pharmacological, alternative, and surgical treatments for epilepsy in children and adolescents. Presenting the information in a convenient tabular format, the book reviews the impact of epilepsy that develops in childhood. After defining what is and what is not a seizure, the authors guide you through the classification of seizures encountered at different stages of maturation.

The book provides several chapters on seizures in the neonatal period, febrile seizures, and the management of status epilepticus. It covers the pharmacology of antiepileptic drugs and their rational selection for use in specific epileptic syndromes and medically intractable epilepsy and guidelines for evaluating patients who would benefit from other forms of therapy including epilepsy surgery. The authors highlight the transition from childhood to adulthood and the impact this has on the management of the disease. Drawing on personal experience, they explore a practical approach to the diagnosis of the various causes of epilepsy, medical and surgical management, and when to refer the patient to an epilepsy specialist or clinic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for the Non-Neurologist
I bought this book thinking I was getting a textbook on pediatric neurology. It is a paperback of less than 200 pages. In spite of its brevity, it is loaded with information, much in tabular form.

For someone with a broader understanding of epilepsy it could be an adequate ready reference in the clinic.

The authors point out ongoing controversies regarding treatment and give reasonable recommendations. A good example is on page 100 where they describe the "kindling" phenomenon and cast doubt on the concept if the patient has had less than 10 seizures.

There is much solid science to be found in the tables. A good example is the chapter on drug treatment of epilepsy. The information table on each drug has a section that lists possible mechanisms of action. This allows the physician to chose based on target of action rather than just seizure type. The text is backed up with 225 references, some as recent as 2003.

I recommend this book for the non-neurologist physician that wants a concise reference that does not take up too much shelf space.

Product Description
Hardbound. As we look further into both the clinical and the basic sciences, it is found that sleep–epilepsy interactions are becoming better defined and yet more complex.

It is known that epilepsy influences sleep, and that sleep influences epilepsy. In addition, the treatment of epilepsy can have favorable effects on sleep, and the sleep disorders that occur concomitantly with epilepsy have profound effects on seizure frequency and severity, primarily through the sleep deprivation process.

With recent advances in epilepsy research, the availability of more modern techniques (particularly digital sleep and EEG recordings), and the acceptance of this specialty as a significant area for both clinicians and for basic research scientists, this is the appropriate time for a comprehensive textbook. The full impact of the sleep–epilepsy field, for both clinicians and basic research scientists, is given in this book.

Danielle,
You have given me hope that all of this will be in the past someday. Your book [Mommy, I Feel Funny!] has told me "No, you're not the only one with seizures." I can honestly say if I didn't write you that first letter, I don't know where I would be with this. You taught me how to be strong. You encouraged me to never give up. You are an amazing person and your book will go far! You are one of the few people I can completely relate to when it comes to having epilepsy and it will be great for young children experiencing the challenge to read your book.
