Product Description
Tekeste Fekadu's The Tenacity and Resilience of Eritrea chronicles his country's armed struggle for independence from 1979 -1983 from the standpoint of an Eritrean war surgeon, continuing the story he began in his previous, much acclaimed account of the war from 1976 - 1979, Journey from Nakfa to Nakfa.Offering frontline, graphic eyewitness testimony of the massive and unrelenting sacrifice of human lives that the war demanded, Tekeste Fekadu also tells a compelling story of a physician's war to save them.He and his colleagues battled their terrible injuries, diseases and psychological suffering as tenaciously as the vastly outnumbered Eritrean armed forces fought six, large-scale Ethiopian military offensives - yet with as few precious resources. He established what was unprecedented on any previous African battlefield: effective, comprehensive and compassionate medical care - whether it required the setting up or tearing down of hospitals on the frontlines or the most delicate surgery and intensive care in trenches and underground wards under bombardment. Also dedicating himself to combating the array of problems suffered by Eritrea's equally unprecedented dependence on a female fighting force, Tekeste Fekadu fought for the recognition of women's unique health issues, ranging from the reproductive cycle to the challenge of negative sexual stereotypes. In a world in which the annals of war are many and often remarkable, Tekeste Fakudu's personal story of Eritrea's armed struggle is inimitable. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Distorted information is transmitted to young adults
Is the purpose of this book to teach young adults about Eritrea or to put Haile Selassie I in a bad light? There is, I believe deliberately, an unattractive picture of Haile Selassie with a caption underneath it which states that he was power hungry. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have read his autobiography and a couple of biopgraphies on him and it is obvious that although he had a mission to improve Ethiopia's situation, his compassion was for the people of the world. He did NOT do the same thing to Eritrea as the Europeans did to Africans or Native Americans; Eritrea was, in fact, a state.Eritrea broke international law by invading Ethiopia and triggering war. There is a whole section in this book about how horrible and destructive Haile Selassie supposedly was toward Eritrea, which is false. Both parties spent too much money on something that could have been achieved through peaceful means and Haile Selassie did NOT instigate the violence.Incorrect and misleading information is being given to young adults. This book does not deserve any stars. ... Read more

Product Description
The "Historical Dictionary of Eritrea" offers a uniquely comprehensive account of the history, culture, and leading personalities of Africa's newest independent nation. Due to the isolation and danger imposed by Eritrea's 30-year war for national independence, and the necessarily secretive operations of its guerrilla leaders, there has been a dearth of scholarship on most aspects of the new nation's history, and no comprehensive accounts of its people's long struggle for independence from Ethiopia. This book provides an in-depth review of Eritrean history from ancient times to the present, drawing on the author's wide scholarship in the field, including access to unpublished Eritrean sources, interviews with leading Eritrean political figures, field research conducted over more than fifteen years, and the perusal of early European, Egyptian, Turkish and Italian colonial sources. Of particular interest are the detailed biographies of Eritrea's current leaders and the leading figures in the long struggle for national liberation, most of which are unavailable in other publications. Further biographies of prominent historical figures and events provide equally scarce information. The histories of Eritrean towns and regions, economic developments, accounts of cultural practices, and the histories of Eritrea's diverse religious and ethnic groups add richness and depth to our knowledge of Eritrea. The "Historical Dictionary of Eritrea" provides a comprehensive account of the Eritrean nationalist struggle unequaled by the many specialized and frequently biased and inaccurate publications. The chronology, introduction and exhaustive bibliography add further resources for the student, scholar, aid worker, and diplomat, who will find this an indispensable resource for understanding contemporary Eritrea. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Dictionary of Eritrea
This book is the most comprehensive dictionary of Eritrea dealing with its history, politics and historical figures among others. Not a single book such as this has been written for the last sixty years. Particularly, it is very useful for students of Eritrea in preparing their term papers or in seeking the introductory information onthis newly independent state of the Horn of Africa. I am glad to save it as a collectible book in my home library. Please see it, this comment is based on my experience in research and written works about thirty books in all coveringmainlyevery aspect of Eritrea libre'.

Product Description
The Archaeology of Ancient Eritrea unlocks the ancient mysteries of the northern Horn long obscured by a dominant focus on other regions and a long liberation struggle that prevented archaeological inquiry for nearly four decades. This volume examines for the first time the early history of Eritrea from approximately 100,000 years ago up to 400 years before colonialism. A sweeping treatment of some of the most important archaeological remains in the ancient African world, this volume draws on groundbreaking research by young Eritrean scholars as well as American, British, and German investigators. Starting in 1996 with the development of archaeological training in Eritrea and the first archaeological surveys around Asmara, Qohaito, and the Red Sea zone, these post-liberation investigations have led to major, significant discoveries. The studies encompass diverse topics ranging from early humans along the Red Sea to the development of an endogenous civilization around Asmara that marks the pathway to urbanism in the Horn. The Archaeology of Ancient Eritrea discusses important unpublished findings that reveal how animals and crops were raised and consumed, how ritual life and belief systems played out over more than 2000 years, and how cultural complexity developed in the Eritrean highlands before, during, and after the rise and fall of Aksum. Classical era sites such as Qohaito, Matara, Keskese, and Adulis are discussed within the broader setting of other ancient places in Eritrea and the Horn, with the conclusion that local developments far outweighed foreign influences from places such as the kingdom of Saba in today s Yemen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Archaeology of Ancient Eritrea
An excellent Book. A must to have in any collection of information related to the ancient world and early civilizations. Very little is known about ancient Eritrea and the early cultures that existed in the horn of Africa until the recent work by the authors of this book. It covers in great detail the wealth of important ancient sites Eritrea as well as an interesting lookinto the scientific processes involved in their study. The book contains much thorough technical detail but is engaging and easy to read. I give this book my highest recommendation. ... Read more

Product Description

Revolution, civil wars, and guerilla warfare wracked Ethiopia during three turbulent decades at the end of the twentieth century. This book is a pioneering study of the military history and political significance of this crucial Horn of Africa region during that period. Drawing on new archival materials and interviews, Gebru Tareke illuminates the conflicts, comparing them to the Russian and Iranian revolutions in terms of regional impact.

Writing in vigorous and accessible prose, Tareke brings to life the leading personalities in the domestic political struggles, strategies of the warring parties, international actors, and key battles. He demonstrates how the brutal dictatorship of Mengistu Haile Mariam lacked imagination in responding to crises and alienated the peasantry by destroying human and material resources. And he describes the delicate balance of persuasion and force with which northern insurgents mobilized the peasantry and triumphed. The book sheds invaluable light not only on modern Ethiopia but also on post-colonial state formation and insurrectionary politics worldwide.

Product Description
This timely and unique book is an analytical study of post-liberation Eritrea. The work offers an extraordinary account of the events and developments that have taken place in the country’s politics, economy and foreign relations and of the things that have gone wrong since independence. By focusing on the economy, constitutional development or lack thereof, and foreign relations, the book illuminates objectively the internal and external difficulties and constraints the country faced in building a democratic society, viable economy, and sustainable foreign policy after liberation.Mengisteab and Yohannes insightfully demonstrate the structural and historical conditions and leadership patterns that account for the striking similarities between post-colonial Eritrea and post-colonial African states. The book makes an enormous contribution not only to the study of contemporary Eritrea but also to the comparative study of African politics and government.Since there is no work to date that treats the economy, politics and diplomacy of Eritrea from a comparative perspective, this timely book will go a long way in closing the gap in our understanding of post-liberation Eritrea, and the post-colonial African state as well. ... Product Description
Eritrean independence under the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (now the People's Front for Democracy and Justice) became an international cause celebre during the 1980s. Eritrea was the first African nation to gain independence in the post-colonial period and appeared to be opening a new and progressive path in African politics. But the promise of the revolution was soon betrayed by the outbreak of war with Ethiopia, the PFDJ's increasingly repressive domestic policies, its mismanagement of the country's economy, and its hostile relations with its neighbours. The PFDJ government dismantled existing formal and informal institutions, crippled the private sector, banned private newspapers, civil and political society organisations, expelled international NGOs and aid agencies when over two-thirds of the population were dependent on food aid, detained without trial journalists, thousands of dissidents, and former leaders of the liberation struggle, and turned national service from an instrument of nation building and national integration into an instrument of open-ended forced labour. In this well-researched first account of post-independence Eritrea, Gaim Kibreab gives a detailed and critical analysis of how things went woefully wrong and how the former 'liberators' turned into oppressors with no respect for the rule of law, human rights and religious freedom. Gaim Kibreab is Professor of Research & Director of Refugee Studies, Department of Social & Policy Studies, London South Bank University ... Read more

Product Description
Bringing together original, contemporary ethnographic research on the Northeast African state of Eritrea, this book shows how biopolitics - the state-led deployment of disciplinary technologies on individuals and population groups - is assuming particular forms in the twenty-first century. Once hailed as theAfrican country that works,A" Eritrea's apparently successful post-independence development has since lapsed into economic crisis and severe human rights violations. This is due not only to the border war with Ethiopia that began in 1998, but is also the result of discernible tendencies in thehigh modernistA" style of social mobilization for development first adopted by the Eritrean government during the liberation struggle (1961-1991) and later carried into the post-independence era. The contributions to this volume reveal and interpret the links between development and developmentalist ideologies, intensifying militarism, and the controlling and disciplining of human lives and bodies by state institutions, policies, and discourses. Also assessed are the multiple consequences of these policies for the Eritrean people and the ways in which such policies are resisted or subverted. This insightful, comparative volume places the Eritrean case in a broader global and transnational context. ... Read more

Product Description
When the government ofMengistu Hailemariam was overthrown and replaced by a new government headed by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in 1991, Eritreans had hoped that there was finally a government in Ethiopia that had foresworn hegemonic ambitions towards Eritrea. The war (1998-2001) shattered this illusion. Eritreans had also hoped that with the conclusion of the war of independence and a presumably friendly new government in Ethiopia, Eritrea would focus on rebuilding political, social, and economic institutions. The war derailed such hopes.

By carefully documenting the events of the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the author unravels the complexity of the dispute and places it in the context of both a regional and international political dynamic. ... Read more

Product Description

In Eritrea, state, traditional, and religious laws equally prevail, but any of these legal systems may be put into play depending upon the individual or individuals involved in a legal dispute. Because of conflicting laws, it has been difficult for Eritreans to come to a consensus on what constitutes their legal system. In Blood, Land, and Sex, Lyda Favali and Roy Pateman examine the roles of the state, ethnic groups, religious groups, and the international community in several key areas of Eritrean law -- blood feud or murder, land tenure, gender relations (marriage, prostitution, rape), and female genital surgery. Favali and Pateman explore the intersections of the various laws and discuss how change can be brought to communities where legal ambiguity prevails, often to the grave harm of women and other powerless individuals. This significant book focuses on how Eritrea and other newly emerging democracies might build pluralist legal systems that will be acceptable to an ethnically and religiously diverse population.

Product Description
Ethiopia and Eritrea have a fascinating and unique avifauna. Poorly known in comparison to many parts of Africa, knowledge on bird distribution in the two countries is scattered throughout the literature. For more than 35 years, the authors have been painstakingly collecting bird records in the region and plotting them on half-degree maps, including published records, data from museum specimens, sightings from their own extensive travels and, more recently, records from the many birdwatchers that now visit Ethiopia. The resulting atlas provides, for the first time, an accurate assessment of the distribution of each of the 870 species known from the two countries, including valuable information on breeding. The succinct text summarises the results and discusses distribution to subspecies level. Extensive introductory chapters cover topics such as topography, geology, vegetation, climate, habitats, conservation, migration, breeding seasons, bird ringing, and the history of ornithology in the region. This groundbreaking book fills a large hole in the literature for one of the most diverse and least known areas of Africa. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, useful resource of distribution and status
Basics: 2009, hardcover, 463 pages, 29 of 32 endemics with color photos, 872 species with a breeding/status atlas map, text of distribution and habitat, many lists

This is a thorough reference book to the distribution and status of all species found in both Ethiopia and Eritrea. The heart of the book is its 872 atlas style maps.Using a grid of 528 squares over the region, the presence of each bird in a square is represented by four distinct symbols. These represent either a confirmed sighting/specimen, an uncertain record, confirmed breeding, or uncertain breeding.

The paragraph accompanying each map consists of the bird's status in the country, migration pattern, distribution notes, breeding behavior and dates, and favored sites. This information is about one paragraph in length.

Other than a dozen or so black-and-white photos of various habitats, the only other photos in this book are 29 excellent, nice-sized color images. These represent all but 3 of the region's 32 endemic birds. Not illustrated are the Red-billed Pytilia, the uncertain Ethiopian Cliff Swallow, and the never seen Nechisar Nightjar (known from only a single wing).

For the data oriented birder, this book offers a great deal of additional information. The 70 pages at the beginning cover a wide range of information from ornithological history to topography and geology to vegetation to breeding seasons. There are also 14 good quality color maps of the region showing a variety of geologic, climate, and vegetative aspects.

The last 78 pages of the book offer many lists that cover hybrids, endemics, hypotheticals, important bird areas, bird ringing/banding, a gazetteer, and references.

This book will appeal to the more ardent ornithologist, the traveling birder, and the Abyssian enthusiast; however, its emphasis on maps and data with few photos and no identification may be a little dry for many other birders.

1-0 out of 5 stars Alphascript books are reprints of wikipedia articles & a scam
see this article from wikipedia itself:

Alphascript Publishing sells free articles as expensive books

An Amazon.com book search on June 9, 2009 gives 1009 "books" from Alphascript Publishing.[1] 1003 of the books are described as "by John McBrewster, Frederic P. Miller, and Agnes F. Vandome". They are called editors in the book listings. It seems the only content of the many books is free Wikipedia articles with no sign that these three people have contributed to them.

The articles are often poorly printed with features like missing characters from foreign languages, and numerous images of arrows where Wikipedia had links. It appears much better to read the original articles for free at the Wikipedia website than paying a lot of money for what has been described as a scam or hoax. Advertising for the books at Amazon and elsewhere does not reveal the free source of all the content. It is only revealed inside the books which maybe satisfy the license requirements for republishing of Wikipedia articles.

As an example of the "care" given to the books, the book "History of Georgia (country)" is about the European country Georgia but has a cover image of Atlanta in the American state Georgia.[2] The Wikipedia article History of Georgia (country) does not make such a comical blunder. ... Read more
