Product Description

Produced in association with the Royal Geographical Society, Polar Explorations looks back at a heroic age, when explorers ventured forth to conquer nature's last bastions. It follows the most incredible voyages in history, from the initial navigation of the Northwest Passage to first flights over the Antarctic. There are impressive accounts of Shackleton's famed open-boat journey, Mawson's solo trek across the Polar Plateau, Ellsworth's transatlantic flight, and more. Lesser-known stories of cannibalism, madness, sabotage, and mutiny capture the thrill and danger of these amazing missions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for what it is
I recomend this atlas for the people who only want easy to read political maps of the world in an easily managable book.If you are looking for anything else, such as more detail or maps of physical features look elsewhere, but for what it is this atlas is great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Usability is low
This atlas tries to cram as much information as possible without any consideration for how the information will be used.Particularly distressing is the type of binding which makes it impossible to see some areas of a given country when spread across two facing pages.Sometimes a large map of a country is provided with missing areas and one has to go to a smaller, less detailed map of a country if one is interested in that area.

I cannot recommend this atlas to anyone.I would rather have an older but more usable atlas than this supposedly very modern and detailed atlas that is unusable. ... Read more

Product Description

From the Ancient Egyptians to the travelers along the silk and spice routes to the scientists still uncovering nearly 200 species a day, Plant Hunters tells the story of our obsession with all things that grow-both for their beauty and their economic potential. Accompanied by hundreds of beautiful illustrations, this intriguing tale moves from East to West and back again, introducing the botanists, explorers, and empire builders who gathered plants such as the coconut tree, roses, and numerous fruits and vegetables and brought them to foreign lands. These are the stories behind the plants we now take for granted in our gardens, as well as those that have enriched and impoverished nations.

5-0 out of 5 stars plants . . . where they came from and howthey were moved across the world
The Plant Hunters
Author - Carolyn Fry
Favorite Features -
*includes more than 100 images from the archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as well as drawings/sketches of plants from across time and around the world
*enclosures throughout with facsimiles of documents, books and more really add a nice and special touch to this book
*fascinating information on Tulipomania
*covers first known transfer of plants from one place to another and follows it through the centuries
*explains how plants were perused for pharmacies and profit and documents the exploitation of people for plants like sugar cane, rubber and tea
*encourages conservation of plants
*warns of invasive plant species

As the author says, this book, "tells how plants were moved across the world". Before reading this book I never realized the power, wealth and control that came with owning and transporting plants. Not only is The Plant Hunters a genuinely lovely book with all the drawings, photos and sketches of incredible plants, but it is also fascinating to read and get a glimpse into where plants originated, how they were moved around the world and the history associated with it all - both positive and sadly, negative. This is a wonderful gift for the person on your list who loves plants and history and makes a lovely and interesting coffee table book. Tremendously well done!

3-0 out of 5 stars Continents, countries and states much smaller than appear in picture
This world map was purchased for a school project in which various locations needed to be noted with a pin. The picture on the website is a bit deceiving, as I had the impression that the continents, countries, states, etc. would be bigger and would be easier to differentiate than what I found upon receiving the map.

While the map is of good size, the continents and all therein seem small - it was hard to find where one state, province, or country began and another ended, as many city, state, province, and country names run over into adjoining states, provinces and countries and boundaries are not always clearly marked. For example, Kentucky is about the size of the tip of my little finger on the map. New Mexico smaller than the size of a dime (if it were squared off), California 1 1/2 inches long and as wide as a pencil, and so on.

We have another world map of a similar size but that seems to better size and differentiate between these areas. However, it is a kids map and has pictures of local dress, foods, exports, etc. all over the map so we could not use it for the project. We had expected this map to be sized similarly.

All said I'm sure it is a good map that is to scale (and likely why everything is so small compared to our other world map which may not be to scale), however, if you have a project that requires a more clear delineation between states, provinces, countries, etc. you may want to consider an alternate. ... Product Description
The ancient Greek philosopher Plato said that the Greeks lived around the Mediterranean Sea "like frogs around a pond." We must not think of the Ancient Greeks as living just in Greece. They traveled and settled all over the Mediterranean and Black Sea, had contacts with the great civilizations of Egypt and Phoenicia and traded with peoples even further afield in northern Europe and Asia. This book will introduce you to the wider world of the ancient Greeks.

Explore the world of the ancient Greeks, from Greece itself to the borders of Pakistan, the deserts of Ethiopia and the plains of southern Russia. This book shows how the history and culture of the ancient Greeks have always been closely linked with those of their neighbors. Greek culture was very influential, but in turn the Greeks themselves were influenced by their contacts with other great civilizations such as Egypt and Persia.

Discover how the ancient Greeks traded with peoples all around the Mediterranean Sea and beyond, and founded new cities which became great centers of culture in the ancient world.

Visit the Mycenaean and Minoan sites where the heroes of the Bronze Age had their citadels and palaces. Explore two contrasting city-states of Classical Greece-Athens (the birthplace of theater, philosophy and democracy) and Sparta (the ultimate military super state). Look inside the temples, theaters, schools, sports stadia and gymnasia, houses and palaces. Examine the objects that the Greeks left behind, and what they have to tell us about life in those ancient times. ... Read more
