Tahiti Travel Guide, Location Of French Polynesia GEOGRAPHY Location in the World Extended over a surface larger than Europe, the120 islands of French Polynesia barely represent 4000 km2 of land, ie less http://dream-islands.com/English/envrnmt1.html
Extractions: Extended over a surface larger than Europe, the 120 islands of French Polynesia barely represent 4000 km2 of land, i.e. less than one hundredth of the surface of France. Of this surface, Rangiroa occupies 1 600 km2 and Tahiti 1 000 km2. The distance, which separates the islands from each other and the fact that they are widely spread out, does not favor the development of internal relations. This geographical imbalance is accentuated by a demographic imbalance. Indeed, the islands of the Society constitute 85% of the 220.000 inhabitants of Polynesia. This archipelago thus forms a center of attraction, where most of the economic activity and relations with the outside world, i.e. primarily the USA, New Zealand and France, are concentrated. Activity, primarily agricultural, has been reinforced these past years by a pearl culture and tourism. 300 000 visitors per year coming from the USA, Japan and Europe, are expected during the next decade.
