A few other species (tomato frogs, leaf frogs, etc.) are occasionally available. Larger and more active frogs (bullfrogs and kin) require more space than most hobbyists have available, but they can make interesting inhabitants for greenhouses and the like. Toads are also available, though only a few species are colorful enough to attract most hobbyist's attention. Fire-belly toads are probably the most common. Dichotomous means two-branched, and these keys are a useful way to break down an identification process into a number of simple steps . There are paired descriptions of different traits, each numbered. For each pair (beginning at no. 1), pick the option (a) or (b) that best fits your animal, and go to the numbered characteristic given by that option. Choose the best option again, and so on until you come to a species. Click on the name to see the species description, and see whether the description fits what you saw. If it doesn't, try the key again, especially if you were not sure of one or more of your choices. For example, suppose I have seen a small frog in the Lower Mainland. I look at its eyes and see that it has horizontal pupils, so I choose 1(b). This directs me to no. 3; I choose (b) again because my frog has smooth skin. In no. 4 I choose (a) because my frog has a dark eye stripe and sticky pads on its toes. I discover that I have seen a Pacific Treefrog (and a cute little creature it was, too). Key:

The name Anura means "without tail" and that is a characteristic of the amphibians that make up this order. They have four legs, the front being shorter than the back. And, while they can walk on land, their primary means of locomotion is hopping. Male Anurans chirp to attract females and define territory. Eggs are laid either in water or in a moist spot on land and the larvae grows up in water. As larvae, they are primarily herbiverous. After metamorphosing into adults they are carnivorous and can eat pretty much anything they can get in their mouth.

The Anurans (Frogs and Toads) are the most ubiquitous order of amphibians, being found in virtually every continent of the world except the poles, and Europe has its fair share of these versatile creatures, although their numbers here pale in comparison with the tropics. Of the dozen or so families belonging to the Order Anura, only the Families Discoglossidae, Pelobatidae, Bufonidae, Hylidae and Ranidae are represented on the continent. Most of the European anurans belong to this last family. As with newts and salamanders, frogs and toads are a useful barometer of environmental conditions, since many will shun or die in polluted water, despite the hardiness of some species. Some also perform valuable service in preying on mosquito larvae, while others such as the Common Toad are the gardener's friend inasmuch as they prey on slugs. They are only problematic to humans if handled, when their skin toxins can cause discomfort to human mucous membranes. It therefore makes sense to encourage frogs and toads without pestering them unduly. This page is not as lengthy as those for lizards and snakes, but I have included as much information as possible. I hope that this page will raise the level of interest in our European anurans.

The "Amazonia" building had all of these tanks of poison-arrow frogs in a lab area, visible from the public area but off-limits to visitors. There weren't any staff people around at the time I visited, or I would have asked if I could get a closer look. It does appear that their breeding program has been pretty successful! Nice froggy poster. You can read more about International Amphibian Days at the official web site for the event. The frog tanks that were on public display in the "Amazonia" building had so much condensation on the glass that it was difficult to take photos of the frogs inside. Here's looking at you, kid. They had several species of frogs mixed up in the same big tank. This black and yellow frog was the smallest frog in the big tank. Another shot of the small yellow frog.

We read many frog books; for example, Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel and Green Wilma by Tedd Arnold. Logical/Mathematical We played many frog probability games, we measured and graphed frog jumps, and did many experiments. We wrote down many observations and followed through the steps of the scientific process. We compared and contrasted frogs and toads and wrote down all of our findings. Visual/Spatial We observed frogs in and out of their natural habitat, made frog masks to wear for our Morning Meeting, we watched videos (Magic School Bus Hops Home), and drew many pictures of frogs. Interpersonal We worked in small groups often. Groups were able to choose names for their own frog that we took care of in our classroom. Groups were responsible for making sure that their frog had all of the things it needed to survive until we were done studying our unit. Musical/Rhythmical We sang a frog song for Morning Meeting!

    Extractions: There are more than 3400 species of frogs and toads worldwide, with the majority living in the humid tropics. Michigan can boast only 13 species, but they are an important part of the State's wildlife heritage. Classification Frogs and toads, along with the salamanders, are members of the class Amphibia. Amphibians are characterized by a life cycle which begins with an unshelled egg laid in water, the egg hatches into a fish like, gill breathing larva (called a tadpole or polliwog in frogs and toads), followed by the transformation of the larva into an adult. During this transformation, the larva gradually develops legs, lungs, and other modifications for life as an air breathing adult capable of living on land. Sometimes this transformation occurs inside the egg, with the animal hatching out as an “adult,” but all of Michigan's frogs and toads, have a typical aquatic (water living) tadpole stage. Most amphibians have rather thin skins through which they can "breathe" and absorb or lose water. Because of this, they prefer to live in moist or wet habitats.
