3-0 out of 5 stars An o.k. book
I read Illusions & Lies, and after I read the very last page, I was disappointed. I was disappointed about a couple things: About how Elyon treated Will, and Will's mother's attitude toward Will (also in Out of the Dark #8),AND now Ellie's mean!(if you don't know, Ellie means Elyon)Well, anyway,Illusions & Lies is not so bad, BUT its not so good either.

3-0 out of 5 stars W.I.T.C.H. Chapter Book: Illusions and Lies
I read the search inside thing, and was wondering "so WHAT is her mission on the lawn?" it was just about to tell me so i clicked to go to the next page and got the back cover. it is SO frustrating to what to know one simple thing and get the back cover. it would have been so much better if i could just have seen what her "mission" was and got the back cover THEN. but nooooooooooooo...but anyway it was ok. pretty much told you who Taranee was and her current (general) life goal. i would recommend giving the next page, or no search inside which is less frustrating. but the books are good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of W.I.T.C.H. #6by Julia, a 9 year old girl
This has so much action, you won't believe it!One of my favorite parts happens when Will has a big fight with her Mom.She won't let Will go to swimming championships until she gets her math grade up.Will goes to the pool to be alone and sees her coach, Vera (who's actually Elyon.)Elyon makes a snake out of water, and it attacks Will.Irma gets there just in time, commanding it to stop.It does, dropping Will into the pool.In my opinion, if you like W.I.T.C.H., you have to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
This W.I.T.C.H. is probably the best one out of all the series. It is about how Will is tricked by the Metamoorian dudes to turn against her friends and fellow Guardians. The cliffhanger was Taranee opening a box with her name on it and a beautiful butterfly comes flying out.The box was from Taranee's crush Nigel. This cliffhanger was O.K.It made you wonder whether Taranee and Nigel were going to get together. All in all a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Beyond illuions and Lies

5-0 out of 5 stars Taranee's Trapped!
I've always loved this series of books. :)

In Finding Meridian, the g irls go to Meridian for the first time, but Taranee ends up trapped. What could happen?

This whole W.I.T.C.H. series teaches the readers that friendship is so powerful it can conquer anything. Highly recommended! :D

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good! A reveiw by Dominique, sooo close to being 10
I remember at the beginning, Will & her friends were practicing their new powers, and Cornelia lifted a chunk a rock, & she put it on another rock...(or something like that). And then,Irma wanted to see what Earth & Water mixed together was like...& made a huge mess!!!!!!!!1111 And the next day,Will was having an awful day at school, in Mrs.Rudolph's 5 hour-end-of-the-day Math class. But right after school,Will,Taranee,&Cornie were walking down the street,& then,Cornelia spotted Will's Mom & Mr.Collins (Will's History teacher) dating! Will was running away cryin' her eyes out! In the next chapter,Irma & Hay-Lin found out Ms.Rudolph was a creature from Metamoor! But, at the very end, Taranee gets captured by Elyon, and Taranee tells Will:"No! Go away! Plase go! Do you hear me Will?!? GO AWAY!" And at the very end, they make an Astral Drop of Taranee. Then I think it had a rockin' awsome cliffhanger! Here's how it goes/ends: Cornelia says: "We DID have a chance to get her....." And Will is like:"She told me to go away,Cornelia! But we'll go back....if it's the last thing we do.....WE'LL RESCUE HER!!!!" And that's pretty much it!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, Not the Best
I bought this book(and the first five) because I have seen the series, which I thought quite entertaining. However, when I read the books, I was dissapointed.

I think the publisher's main problem was its' editor. I could find a couple grammer and spelling mistakes in the book(and trust me, I'm not the best at finding this time of thing). Another thing was that they thought the book would be better if they actully put it in book format.

I would have enjoyed the book much more if it was in comic style, for the drawings are entertaining.

W.i.t.c.h. has its magic though, it draws you in, besides the unorganized writing and the mistakes. It is a breath of air for fantasy, for it is so hard to find original fantasy these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of W.I.T.C.H. #3 by Julia, a 9 year old girl
I liked this book because the Guardians go to Meridian to see Elyon, who has disappeared. When they're battling Frost the Hunter, the evil bad guys lock Taranee in a bubble. She says to them "Go, Will!Get out!"Later they create an Astral Drop of her so her parents don't worry. It was pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Treatment
Do you know what a Capped grope is? If so, this is the book for you! This is a really readable, though understandably advanced, book. It seems to contain everything a person could possibly want to know about embedding a disk in a 4-manifold. I'm far from an expert on 4-manifolds, but I haven't seen much of this material presented anywhere else. If you want to become a master of 4-manifolds, you need this book like Luke Skywalker needed Yoda.

My copy doesn't have the cool orange cover so I feel a little sad. Hopefully you won't get the brown one like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The weirdness of four-manifolds
Lee Carlson's review can hardly be improved upon, but I have one addendum, responding to his lament at the end of the review:

A concrete construction of a fake 4-space can be found in the last section of Chapter 1 of Dan Freed and Karen Uhlenbeck's (1984, revised 1991) book, "Instantons and Four-Manifolds", a great compliment to Freedman and Quinn's book. Unfortunately, it's just as hard to find and about three times as costly as the reviewed book. Unless you really can't live without seeing how this is done, take it on faith (not much consolation to a physicist who wants to know if black holes behave differently in fake spacetime). A cheaper alternative: If you visit a major university math library and take a bunch of quarters for their copier, the relevant Ch.1, "Fake R^4", is fourteen pages long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant overview of topology in 4 dimensions
It is too bad this book is out of print, for it introduces the reader to a fascinating branch of topology and has the clearest proof of the 4-dimensional Poincare conjecture. In addition, the authors do not hesitate to employ diagrams as needed to illustrate the main points and to assist the reader in visualizing 4-dimensional objects. The authors give a fine discussion as to the reasons why four dimensions is harder to deal with topologically than dimensions five or greater, this being essentially due to the behavior of 2-dimensional disks: mapping 2-disks into 3-manifolds results (generically) with 1-dimensional self-intersections; in 4-dimensions the intersections are isolated points, and in 5 dimensions or more the 2-disks can be embedded.

Interestingly, the authors choose not to employ the famous "Kirby calculus" in the proofs of the main results, despite the fact that it was used extensively in their earlier works. They break the book into two parts, the first one emphasizing embedding theorems and the second one the structure of manifolds. Those readers interested in the proof of the 4-dimensional Poincare conjecture will find it in chapter 7, as a consequence of the authors proof of the h-cobordism theorem, the latter being nontrivial. It is the absence of a smooth structure on the h-cobordism that makes it so difficult in dimension four.

The existence of exotic structures on 4-manifolds is discussed in detail in chapter 8 and the authors endeavor to show why dimension 4 is unique compared to higher dimensions. The existence of exotic structures on 4-manifolds is definitely interesting, and has recently been shown to have importance in physics. But physicists who need an explicit example of one of these structures will not find one here, and I know of no such examples in the literature. Such an example would be interesting from the standpoint of the behavior of quantum field theories on such 4-manifolds, as one would like to know if this behavior would indeed be different than that on the manifold with the "standard structure". ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good book bad service
I ordered and read this book after taking a 5 day raft trip through the Canyon lands on the Colorado river near Moab Utah. Hiking up the banks through the sandstone cliffs was amazing- walking into history -literally. This book, along with others I read about the " Ancient Ones" was so interesting. I am sorry to report Amazon continues to send double orders of 50 % of the books I have ordered including this book.Of course I donate these books to charity, but I advise caution using Amazon for ordering books regularly. I would recommend Barnes and Noble Online. Thom Shcneeder.

5-0 out of 5 stars review
this is a great book that will help you in ur relationship with any one it sure did with mine. It also teaches you things that you wouldn't have learned in sex ed class back in High School. This is a great book for any couple or single person looking for a way to help them in there relationship.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a good series but getting old
I've been a fan of "Futari H" since the first volume and for good reasons. The artwork is great, the informational tid-bits are interesting and relavent, and all in all it's a fun series.

However, I have to agree with another review from an Amazon reader. The book's title "Orgasm" is exceedingly deceptive. Yura, the female lead, still has yet to experience one by the book's end. I thought she was overdue for one at the end of the second book. Lo'n'behold book three has a similar let down and now book four has me questioning the writer's intelligence. Hopefully book five will deliver where the last four have irritated some readers.
Another issue I've heard raised is the hokey dialogue. C'mon people...it's manga, what do you expect? Yes, Yura's constant "I'm so embarrassed." quotes are annoying and often undue but it's Manga. Near as I can guess some male readers probably get off on that sort of thing. Whatever.

Also this edition skipped out on the protective sleeve as well. Volumes one and two came in protective sleeves bearing the cover-art but three and four did not. Sloppy judgement call on the part of the packaging department at Tokyopop. Still, this is NOT a reason to discontinue reading the series. Still worth the buy but mainly for continuity in the series.

2-0 out of 5 stars Major letdown
I waited to review this series until I had received and read Manga Sutra 4.I have to say that I've never been so disappointed in a series in my life. The illustrations were excellent but the stories were so dull and repetitive .I truly hope Makoto is not a true representation of the Japanese male during sex because, if so, the women are doomed to spend an eternity frustrated and dissatisfied.I can understand the first two volumes showing the couple getting to know each other but we're on volume 4 here. The title was "Orgasm" and Yura, the main female character, never had one! Each book teased and tantalized with this possibility ("Will Yura ever have an orgasm? Will Makoto ever get his act together?") but it never happened. Also, I was so tired of Yura thinking or saying "I'm so embarrassed!"How can two people be married and continue in such an unpardonable situation?I can't believe the author deems this to be a sex instruction manual for the Manga lover. If you want to laugh or just groan at the lameness of the dialogue, you only need to read one book in the series; they're all, more or less, the same.If you truly need a sex manual, don't bother.Oh, and having lived in Japan, I know that the Japanese, both male and female, are much more sophisticated than these books portray. On the bright side, there were several educational moments, such as the explanation of Shijuhatte (Japanese Sex Manual); that's why I gave it two stars instead of one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sad but good.
This book is so sad!!!!!!!11 But it still is pretty good. Yan-Lin (Hay-Lin's grandma) dies!!!! The cliffhanger was pretty good. It makes you think where Elyon went. I think it's good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great continuation from the first book!
Will, Hay-Lin, Taranee, Cornelia and Irma magical bond continued into the second book- where all five friends search for Elyon who has mysteriously disappeared. While they go on with their search, Will has a meeting with Matt, and Irma tells everyone the ghastly truth behind a boy from their school's sudden disappearance. The book ended once again with a cute comic from the actual comic book and I found the whole book totally cute and interesting. I recomend this book to witch fans and anyone who has read the comic or watched the T.V show!

3-0 out of 5 stars W.I.T.C.H.book #2 : The dissapearence
This book was not to exciting but I liked it anyways.Elyon has gone missing. Will discovers that she can talk to appliances and electronics. At school the next day Haylin saddly discovers that her Grandmother has died.At the chinese funeral while Haylin is hugging Will she sees Elyon in a ghost like form. The next day at school Will,Irma,Taranee,Cornelia and Haylin see the ghost like Elyon again only this time she is asking them to come with her. When Mrs. Knickerbocker is not looking they follow her through buildings with the help of Cornelia. They follow her to her basement where she was waiting with Vathek and Prince Phobos. The girls closed the portal but afterwards they found a mysteries book that they could not open. For more about that read book #3.Plus I forgot to mention that Elyon got away with the others. For more detail, excitement and adventure read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's cool.
In it's own way it's sad, in another way it's cool, but all together it's pretty awsome.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Bad...
Hey, remember me? I'm the twelve year old one who gave the first book two stars.

Shortly after reading that (the first book, that is), I moved on to the next feeling disappointed but eager to move on to the next. First things first: the electrical-appliances-talking thing bugs me to no end. I can understand being able to turn them on with no electricity, as the parts once came from nature; but talking? That's just too much. Then, shortly after that and a bunch of "magical schoolgirl" nonsense, we learn Hay Lin's grandma dies. This was immensely satisfying to me, as it's just a cliché that old Chinese people have or once had magic powers, and I hate cliché. From then on, more "magical schoolgirl" nonsense. The subplot of ol' what's-his-name turning into a frog has no end, and you have to read the comic excerpt to find out what happened to him. Eh? What? Don't you have to tie up loose ends- at least for subplots- at the end of the book? And it isn't brought up in the next book, either.

Well, that's my rant. Sorry for fans of the book! I love to critique :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book
Professional PHP4 Multimedia Programming is an extremely handy book to have on your bookshelf, even if (and possibly especially if) you don't design and implement multimedia applications with PHP all the time.Within hours of getting the book, I realized that I could use PHP as a commandline scripting language to solve several problems.I've used it as a reference several times since, even though I do NOT consider myself a PHP Multimedia Applications developer.

The book is organized nicely. As a "Professional" book, it assumes a decent understanding of PHP.This assumption saves you lots of time and unnecessary hand holding. There is a brief PHP refresher chapter for those who aren't quite as familiar with PHP as necessary, but after that refresher chapter, you're expected to understand things. You bought this book (or will, anyway) because you already know how to program in PHP but are not familiar with the various multimedia extensions.

The next several chapters each dedicate themselves to a specific extension concept: Ming, Ming with ActionScript, GD, ImageMagick, PDFLib, and FDF.

Each chapter gives an overview of the library, it's uses and limitations, and gives lots of example source code giving examples of all the functions in an extension and how they are used together.

The next few chapters are full-fledged application case studies.Though you may not agree with the authors' coding styles, these case studies walk you through (from start to finish) several different applications to show you how the libraries can be used within the scope of a larger PHP application, not just example toy scripts.

Following the case studies are several appendices. Each appendix is a language reference for a multimedia extension. Most of the information in the appendices is found online in the PHP manual, and I, for one, find it more convenient to look it up there, but having it in the book is a nice bonus.

Another wonderful addition is a full-color screenshots gallery index, which shows you what various scripts from within the chapters should look like when run. This is great for two reasons:1)You can "check your work" as you write the applications and sample code in the book, and 2) You can see the results of functions in the book while reading it away from the computer.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about writing even just ONE application in PHP that will manipulate any supported multimedia (Shockwave, images, PDF/FDF, etc.)The time you save by having this book as a companion will more than pay for the cost of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended to all serious PHP developers
Unlike most open souce projects, PHP has been blessed with many good books. Professional PHP4 is another fine book aimed for the serious PHP developer venturing to add multimedia.

There is a short refresher on PHP followed by PHP Multimedia installation. Then it gets into the nitty-gritty stuff of making it work.

I found the case studies towards the end of the book particularly helpful in mapping out a solution action plan.

Please let me know if you find this review helpful. Thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book stands out in the crowd
Professional PHP4 Multimedia Programming is a unique book in the midst of all other PHP books. No other book aims to cover the topics that this one does. If you are a PHP developer looking to expand you knowledge and integrate the multimedia capabilities of PHP into your applications, then this is the book for you.

The goal of this book is to introduce the concepts and techniques needed to produce dynamic multimedia content. The extensions covered are Ming, GD, ImageMagick, PDF, and FDF. Each technology is thoroughly explained from installation through example use. A case study is then given to go into further detail on the use of each extension.

I especially enjoyed the fact that they provided installation instructions for these extensions. One of the biggest hurdles people have with using Ming, GD, and the others is the installation process. Once someone gets past that stage they can at least experiment with how the extension works. It can be very frustrating when you can't even get something installed. Hopefully this book will help ease some of that frustration.

The case studies used by the authors are superb. These are real would applications that people want to create every day! They include a headline grabber with Ming, a mobile web coffee shop finder with GD, an image gallery using ImageMagick, and a PDF template system. Each one of these case studies is designed to get you thinking. Sure, they you the code needed for the application, but they also show you how the design process works and detail possible enhancements.

The one thing I found lacking in this text was some type of common problems section. Invariably, people are going to have difficulties when it comes to installation or use of these extensions. A simple google search will show the abundance of problems related to these technologies. A small chapter, or a section in each chapter, detailing some of the most common problems encountered, with their fixes, would have been great.

Overall, this book is great. If you are looking to develop multimedia applications in PHP, it is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Covers all aspects of PHP multimedia programming
This book is a great tutorial/reference for programming with PHP's multimedia libraries. It covers topics such as GD(image manipulation) ming (dynamic flash generation) and pdflib(dynamic PDF generation).

The book was written very well and I only noticed one small type error. There is lots of information and a function reference in the appendix.

5-0 out of 5 stars Case studies that worked!!!
I bought this book a fortnight back and i have
amazingly learned more than i expected. The 4 case
studies in the book are amazing - I esp enjoyed working
on the coffee shop finder app and got everything working
in a zap.I recommend this book to the developer
fraternity that wants to realise the true power
behind PHPs extension libraries (multimedia).
And oh! yeah this is my first WROX read that had
color pages in it:) ... Read more
