From the author: This article examines parents in the youth justice system, based on a conceptual analysis and a phenomenological inquiry of parents with a son convicted of crimes in the youth justice system of a district in Western Canada. The difficult task of parenting a young offender is made more onerous by the societal tendency to blame parents or ignore their need for support; yet policies and practices expect parents to be the primary sources of supervision, care, and rehabilitation of youth in difficulty. The findings chronicle parental experiences of stress and loss and the hard work parents do to respond to the difficult and contradictory expectations of the youth justice system. Even when they did "all the right things" parents encountered systemic injustices and exclusion from meaningful participation in important decisions that affected their sons and themselves. The discussion explores implications, taking parental experiences into account, and proposes systemic changes, based on a community change approach to youth justice, to facilitate enhanced parental support and empowerment.

Book Description

¡n we get some reality in here?ߡsks Judy Sheindlin, former supervising judge for Manhattan Family Court. For twenty–four years she has laid down the law as she understands it:

● If you want to eat, you have to work.

● If you have children, you'd better support them.

  • If you break the law, you have to pay.

  • If you tap the public purse, you'd better be accountable.

Now she abandons all judicial restraint in a scathing critique of the system – filled with realistic hard–nosed alternatives to our bloated welfare bureaucracy and our soft–on–crime laws.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read.....
First offI love Judge Judy, I think she is brilliant, funny, and right on the money with her quips and viewpoints.....secondly, i found this book absolutely tortuous to read, and gave up after about 70 pages of it, for some reason I just could not go on with it anymore....Judy's ideas on how to solve what ails our society are insightful, and worth taking note of. However, the book is so poorly written, i couldn't continue to finish it. maybe its just the way it was put togther, but this was not at all what i was hoping it would be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not court cases as I thought
I got this book at the libary and I was so disapointed. From the title I thought it was a book of funny cases. Its not.Its a book on how she became a Judge. there may have been cases ,but I don't remember any.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as cool as she thinks she is.
All I know is that watching her shows and reading bits of this book it is clear why she is no longer a sitting judge. She would not be allowed in court anymore. Her attitude and behavior are totally unprofessional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
This is a very insightful book about her life experiences as a family court judge in the New York City Area. She has stories from her life, which she ties into some social changes she thinks would make the US a better place to live. It was a very interesting book and I would recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars required reading
this book should be required reading for all kids in jr. high school. Judge Judy has an uncanny ability to glean the truth out of a pile of b.s.! ... Read more

Product Description
From Wagga Wagga, Australia, to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a revolution is taking place in how police, courts, schools and workplaces respond to wrongdoing. Instead of just doling out punishment to offenders, we are changing our criminal justice and disciplinary systems to address the harm done to victims and the community. Based in ancient tribal practices, REAL JUSTICE involves victims, offenders and their families and friends in a face-to-face process called "restorative justice conferencing."In his book, REAL JUSTICE, Ted Wachtel offers a moving and powerful account of the growth and development of restorative justice conferencing in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States through true stories of victims and offenders in real life encounters. In vivid testimony, we see victims confront shoplifters and vandals, bullies and arsonists with their emotions. Offenders usually shed their "tough guy" images and come away with empathy and understanding for those they have harmed -- not only their victims, but their own families as well.Restorative justice conferencing holds offenders accountable and satisfies victims more effectively than our courts and school disciplinary processes. REAL JUSTICE brings us hope for a better future. "During Terry O'Connell's presentation I was seized by an epiphany, a sudden intuitive realization that I had just encountered an essential universal truth. Restorative justice conferencing was so simple that it was elegant, so basic that it was complete.Nothing in my experience with young offenders could match the positive outcomes being described by this Australian police officer. I wanted to bring restorative justice conferencing to North America, where we lead the world in escalating juvenile crime and school misconduct."-- Ted Wachtel, founder of Real Justice and president of the International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP) Graduate School ... From the author: Previous meta-analyses of the correctional treatment literature have demonstrated that family intervention programs for delinquents represent some of the strongest treatment modalities available for this population. However, a recent meta-analysis by Latimer (2001) argued that, although family intervention appears to be effective at first glance, when controls are introduced for the methodological quality of the evaluation, the sizes of the effects decrease substantially, and under the strictest methodological conditions, they ultimately disappear. The present meta-analysis explored the impact of methodological rigour on the findings of evaluations of family intervention programs for young offenders, but attention was paid to the appropriateness of the programs (e.g., whether they adhered to the principles of risk, need, and general responsivity). Although the effects of the program decreased mildly under the strictest methodological conditions, appropriate treatment continued to yield significant mean reductions in reoffending. The implications of these findings for the broader literature are discussed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Troubled Youth Loved This Book
As a volunteer working with boys in the juvenile justice system, I was able to read this book to some troubled youths at a residential treatment center. They thought the book was terrific--not only did they identify with the cases described, but the legal afternotes provoked much discussion about the consequences of their own actions. It is written at a level that even the boys with limited verbal skills could understand it.
