5-0 out of 5 stars All the colors, flavors and and visions of our world
This resource contains annotated bibliographies for books of fiction, oral tradition and poetry for these major groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native-Americans.

As stated in thepreface, the resources are limited to those published 1985 through 1993 forindividuals of preschool age through high school. Resources focus on theAmerican experience, and do not include content or stories that occur inother locations. A total of 570 resources are listed in this title.

Resources were reviewed by an Advisory Board for suitability. Advisorsare clearly identified and include librarians, professors and a teacher ofvarious ethnic backgrounds. Resource annotations are listed by type(fiction, oral tradition, poetry) and ethnic group. Also, resources areindexed by title, writer, illustrator, grade level and subject.

Annotated citations are substantial and provide appropriate detail onthe resource's content, quality, format, illustrations, interpretation ofsubject and suitability for intended audience. Through a quick reading ofthe citation, a teacher, librarian, parent or other user can easilydetermine whether the book might interest the reader, be topical for alesson or plan, and serve well for individual reading, storytelling orother uses.

At first glance, I would include this item in my collectionof multi-ethnic resources as it provides a relatively recent, comprehensivelist of print materials with quality, objective and complete annotatedcitations. This book is limited only by its scope of ethnic groups. Forexample, I could not answer patron questions or provide resources abouttheir European ethnic background.

Before making a final decision to buythis book, I would select and read a representative sampling of severallisted resources. I could then compare and contrast the accuracy, completeness and objectivity of the resource's citation with my ownindependent read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid multi-ethnic reference with abundant resource
This resource includes annotated citations for a wide variety of resources focused on international ethnic and national groups. These ethnic groups in the United States are covered: African Americans, Asian Americans, HispanicAmericans, Native Americans. Also includes other areas and nations of theworld, such as Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, Central and South America,as well as Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Approximately 1038 resources are listed. Resources are grouped first byethnic group, then by grades: preschool through grade 3, grades 4-6, grades7-9 and grades 10-12. Full citation information is included.

Annotatedcitations are detailed and provide substantial information about theresource. Content scope, organization and format are described. When theresource is fiction, the story and characters are summarized, yet provideenough detail so I could glean an understanding of the style and relevanceof the resource.

This work also contains background and explanatorymaterial that is useful for understanding the use and evaluation ofmulti-ethnic resources. For example, the Introduction section describescriteria for evaluation and the major concerns of evaluation (specifically, general accuracy, stereotypes, language, author's perspective, currency offacts and interpretation, audience, integration of cultural information, balance and multidimensionality, and illustrations). This material servesas a solid introduction to the need for and issues related to multi-ethnicbibliography.

Additional context and background is provided for theethnic or national group covered in this work. For example, the openingpiece to the chapter on United States Native Americans describes thehistory, type and availability of resources for children and teenagers.

I would include this resource in my collection. Its scope allowsflexible use to answer questions about both ethnic groups located in theUnited States and other countries. The list of contributors indicates asolid diversity of individuals and professional backgrounds. However, Icannot directly ascertain the ethnicity or ethnic experiences of thecontributors.

The overall quality, completeness, breadth and depth ofthe citations is impressive. Given that Bowker is the publisher, I view thecontents with hopes of more accuracy and correctness than resources fromother publishers. However, I would still care to "spot check"several citations by a careful read of the original works. ... Read more

Book Description
At long last, here is the definitive practical guide to sexuality materials in libraries and an annotated bibliography of nearly 600 recommended books for school and public libraries. Cornog and Perper, the preeminent experts on sexuality materials for libraries, provide guidelines for materials selection, reference, processing, access, programming, and dealing with problems of vandalism and censorship. The bibliography, organized into 5 topics and 48 subtopics, annotates a collection of recommended books and nonprint materials on sexuality information for children and adults, most published since 1985. Recommended works represent a wide variety of views, including Christian and conservative. Part I offers detailed guidance for selecting and processing sexuality materials, including vertical files, audiovisuals, and periodicals, and for doing reference on sexuality topics; lists a full range of topics and viewpoints that libraries should collect; addresses a variety of processing and access issues such as cataloging, programming, and vandalism; discusses how to deal with censorship issues relating to sexuality materials in the library; and reviews the history of libraries and sexuality materials. Part II, the annotated bibliography, is organized into 5 broad topics--sexuality and behavior, homosexuality and gender issues, life cycle issues, sex and society, and sexual problems--which are then divided into 48 subtopics. Each title is compared and contrasted with similar titles. Titles for young people include grade level appropriateness. Specialized acquisition sources are also listed for each of the 48 subtopics. Cornog and Perper point out that the key to selection of materials is balance and representativeness of a wide range of viewpoints. They have gone to great lengths to provide a wide variety of materials and viewpoints and to seek out interesting and valuable materials from large and small publishers and organizations. This is the definitive guide on sexuality information for public and school libraries. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed, but useful overall
Girl-specific lists are always up for extra criticism, and this is no different. The authors do a great job of discussing their criteria, and for me there's a gap between theirs and mine. I want great books, that also are positive for girls. Theirs seems to possibly be books that are positive for girls, but except for that aren't that great. I'd rather a smaller, more selective list.

My problems with this specific book include:

The age groupings - they have 8yrs - 11yrs old, and then 12 & up. I like the middle school grouping better - 11 is much more similar to 12 than 8 is to 10, in my perspective.

Also I dislike that each book stands alone in their descriptions - there may be two books listed my an author, but neither listing will give a clue about that. I prefer where other books by that author are within a listing.

Different genre's are thrown together within each age group, and genre is not identified in the heading info. So it is not possible to skim for fiction only for instance (although that is what most selections are).

The basic info: author, illustrator, year, edition is laid-out in a way that takes 4 lines per book, which is a waste of space.

The descriptions are full, but again it often felt like I was being sold or encouraged to read it. I don't want encouragement, I want assessment/criticism.

Finally, there are the barest of indexes: one has title, author and contributor; the other has subject.

I do like the contributor items: in which a famous woman comments on her favorite books.

So it is certainly useful, and could also be even better in later editions!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for your book shelf
This is a carefully constructed resource of books about and for girls. While it includes recommendations on the well known..."Little Women", "Anne of Green Gables" and "Harriet the Spy", it also includes recommendations on unusual, clever and hard to find books such as Jan Andrews' "Very Last First Time" amd Jacqueline Dembar Greene's "Out of Many Waters".

In addition to the typical one paragraph summaries of the books, the authors have interviewed dozens of prominent accomplished American women about their favorite childhood books.Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor particularly enjoyed the "Book of Knowledge",and author, Paula Danziger, read Nancy Drew books and "Little Women".

This is the most thoughtful book of its kind.It reviews 450 books by age and reading level. My daughter and I have discovered wonderful books we would never have found on our own.Be prepared to use your library, well as used book sales and services to find some of the great books.

The authors have clearly put a great deal of thought and effort into best guide of books about and for girls. If you are the sharing the adventure of reading with a girl, this is a must for your book shelf.

Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Heroine: 400 Books for Girls to Love
I can't tell you how excited I am to have found this book.As a mother of a 2 1/2 year old little girl, I am thrilled that I will have found a tool in which to seek out books that will help build her self esteem, selfconfidence and self assurance. It'll accompany me on our many trips to thelibrary. The books listed within, are phenomenal. And best of all, it'llcarry her from toddler to teenage! It's a must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential guide for thoughtful readers
As the mother of three daughters, I was delighted to discover this meaningful guide to good books for girls.Literature that empowers and inspires a young girl is one more way to launch confident, successfulchildren into an increasingly challenging world. This book makes thatconcern much more effective and the choices more clearly directed.Iespecially like the sidebars of high-profile women who reveal theirfavorite titles from girlhood. It's amazing to see how a simple picturebook as a child can have such a radical and lasting effect on anindividual. There is guidance andinspiration aplenty in here...and lotsto think and talk about at the dinner table, too. ...
