Product Description
This book concerns two broad classes of Markov decision problems that fall within the family of restless bandits" an intractable class of decision processes introduced by P. Whittle. For the first class of problems we employ Gittins' index theory to establish the indexability of (inter-alia) general families of restless bandits that arise in problems of machine maintenance and stochastic scheduling with switching penalties. We also give formulae for the resulting indices. The second class of problems involves two families of Markov decision problems that can be identified as "bi-directional" restless bandits. The "spinning plates" problem concerns the optimal management of a portfolio of reward-generating assets whose yields grow with investment but otherwise tend to decline. In the model of asset exploitation called the "squad system" the yield from an asset tends to decline when it is used but will recover when the asset is at rest. In both cases simply stated conditions are given which guarantee indexability of the problem. In all cases numerical investigations testify the outstandingly good performance of the index heuristics concerned. " ... Read more

Chapters: Wolf Totem, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Soul Mountain, Waiting, Rice, Family Catastrophe. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Wolf Totem is a semi-autobiographical novel about the experiences of a young student from Beijing who finds himself sent down to the countryside of Inner Mongolia in 1967, at the height of China's Cultural Revolution. The author, Lü Jiamin, wrote the book under the pseudonym Jiang Rong; his true identity did not become publicly known until several years after the book's publication. Wolf Totem is narrated by protagonist Chen Zhen, a young man in his 20s who, like the author, left his native Beijing to work in Inner Mongolia during the cultural revolution. Through descriptions of folk traditions, rituals, and life on the steppe, Wolf Totem compares the culture of the ethnic Mongolian nomads and the Han Chinese farmers who settle in their territory, praising the "freedom, independence, respect, unyielding before hardship, teamwork and competition" of the former and criticising the "autocratic, sheeplike" nature of the latter. The book condemns the agricultural collectivisation imposed on the nomads by the settlers, and the ecological disasters it caused, and ends with a 60-page "call to action" disconnected from the main thread of the novel. The author states that he was inspired to begin writing Wolf Totem by an accident: he ignored the advice of the clan chief of the group of nomads with whom he was staying, and accidentally stumbled across a pack of wolves. Terrified, he watched as the wolves chased a herd of sheep off a cliff, then dragged their corpses into a cave. From then on, fascinated by the wolves, he began to study them and their relationship with the nomads more closely...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10786720 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars it was ok
You get what one would expect considering the size of the book.

It's good at giving detailed information about the effects of glucose on your health. The shortcoming is the section on the GI Diet.If I had not read other books and information, I would have been confused.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tiny & thin book
Decent info but not at all what I was expecting. There are many better PCOS books out there and the G.I. diet info was limited.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Diet Information
This book is excellent for diet management of PCOS, the seven steps are so useful and have helped me lose over 19 pounds in 3 months. The sample grocery list is very helpful as are the recipes. Very much recommend!

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.
I've had PCOS for 23 years and have fought weight gain for most of them. The only time my body responded positively to any diet was on the Carbohydrate Addict's diet for Life. The only thing is, it's really hard to stay on it.I was at a healthy weight when I quit smoking, and figured I would try the Low G.I. for PCOS book for a new way of eating.I gained 20 lbs. in 6 months.I couldn't control the carb intake.Low G.I. or not, this diet made me crave more carbs, which in turn makes my hormones go crazy and makes me gain weight, esp. in my abdomen.I hope it works for other women with PCOS, but sadly, I did not get my money's worth from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative.Easy to understand.
I don't know a lot of medical terms, nor do I want to, but this book helped me to understand what my body is doing. If you are diagnosed with PCOS, this is a MUST read!! ... Read more
